Violinist Gidon Kremer and his ensemble, Kremerata Baltica, have tackled repertoire that ranges from Baroque to contemporary, but they seem to shine on the newer stuff. The group has an obvious ear for the music of the Baltic region, and Kremer's icy precision and passionate playing are tailor-made for the modern masters. On Silencio, Kremer delivers another stunning recording, this one featuring meditative music by a trio of composing mavericks: Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, and Vladimir Martynov. Martynov may be the least-known of the three, but his work marks the disc's highlight composition, "Come In!" The moving piece for violin and orchestra--which features plenty of Romantic, lyrical playing (and the occasional sound of a door knocking)--is mystical but also tender and sweet. A string orchestra arrangement of Glass's String Quartet No. 2 ("Company") is almost as intense as the original played by Kronos. A short Pärt world premiere rounds out this disc: "Darf Ich" is a glorious piece for violin and orchestra reminiscent of Pärt's sublime "Summa". This is a gorgeous disc you'll get lost in; another gem from Kremer. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars "Come In" -- Must Listening.......2005-01-26

I'm a fan of Glass and Part, but I have to confess that their music on this CD more or less went in one ear and out the other. That's not a bad thing, because I like their work and listen to plenty of it. I just, wasn't bowled over, is all.

(I was using the CD as background music; their works here may grow on me in time.)

I had to rush here to recommend this CD, though, because I was so moved by Vladimir Martynov's "Come In."

At first I was put off by it, because I had purchased the CD exactly because I am fans of Glass and Part, and I expected the CD to consist of music in their minimalist style.

Martynov's "Come In" struck me, at first, as being more Romantic, and I just wasn't sure what to make of it.

Soon, though, I completely forgot about style, and about the (annoying) work-related task I was attempting to perform while listening to this CD. "Come In" seduced me like I haven't been seduced by a piece of new music in a long time. I was close to tears in parts.

I lack a sophisticated vocabulary to discuss classical music, but I can tell you that "Come In" struck me as sweet and beautiful, but also complex, deep, and never cloying. I did feel that I was being invited into a numinous experience.

Later, when I read the liner notes, I was even more moved. What Martynov said about his piece and his goals, the ideas and sensations he wished to convey and evoke, worked perfectly for me.

Needless to say with Kremer, the musicianship is first rate.

5 out of 5 stars Easy & not-easy, but all profound, moving & rewarding.......2001-07-02

A fascinating combination of "modern" works to appreciate on this disc. All quite different, powerful juxtaposition of styles and moods. Tabula Rasa, the "lead-off" composition by Arvo Part, packs stunning intensity of a dark, melancholy sort in Part's minimalist, yet melodic vein. Next is Glass's "Company" for string orchestra. Pardon my simple mind, but I really do enjoy the regular/irregular pulsing, throbbing undercurrent of his works. The style is highly characteristic, yet, within that signature framework, he pulls in just enough complexity and variation in my opinion to make this highly worthwhile fare. Then, "Come In" by Martynov. What can I say, this is easy listening, but a real deep "easy" at that. Positively brought a lump to my throat and then some! Tell you the truth, I was so drained after these first three pieces, that I had to take a break before the final item, Darf Ich by Part. Listen again & again when you're in a bit of a heavy mood that deserves musical concordance. The performance/performers work these treasures to the hilt. I'd pare my CD collection from 1200 down to 12, and "Silencio" would remain.

5 out of 5 stars A minimalist delight........2001-02-17

First of all, why silence? And how?

After all, one has to agree with John Cage when he points out that "There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot."

What then does it mean to call an album "Silencio"?

I think what it means is that the music in this album tries not to communicate something to its listener, but rather aims at helping one communicate with one's Self. This lack of intentional outward interaction, and the parallel promotion of introspection, I think, is intended to be thought of as a silence. Indeed, the emotional landscape it allows us to observe is, perhaps, the closest thing to silence, for it is a still and timeless picture, void of any matter, absorbed in a heartbeat alone.

Technically this album is superb, with Gidon Kremer and his disciples proving to be, as always, up to the highest of expectations. The prepared piano in Arvo Pärt's Tabula Rasa deserves praise as well - I have never heard the piano sound so beautiful, evocative and majestic at once. As for Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass and Vladimir Martynov, they are, of course, a handsome lot to be found combined in one CD, with 68 minutes of music at a reasonable price by Nonesuch's standards. The nature of these composers, however, is what makes this album a product that not everyone is likely to care for. I feel quite certain that anyone who likes minimalist music - in the style of Gorecki or Kancheli, for instance - will find this album enticing. On the contrary, I recommend those who believe simplicity to be a symptom of stupidity to spend their money in a different way, for the music in this album is indeed a minimalist delight.

2 out of 5 stars If You Can't Say Anything Nice, Silencio.......2000-12-19

Musically the Twentieth Century is like the month of March. It came in like a lion, with monumental orchestral masterpieces like the Mahler Symphonies, the Strauss Tone Poems, and Stravinsky's ballet scores. But as the artistic, political, and economic climate changed, the monumental became increasingly rare. Most living composers today will never have a performance of one of their works by a major professional symphony orchestra. And so, for the most part, the Twentieth Century goes out like a lamb, with the intimate replacing the enormous. And Gidon Kremer, with his string ensemble the Kremerata Baltica, reflects this aesthetic change in his new CD Silencio. Certainly one wouldn't expect heart-on-your-sleeve emotion and drama from a CD with this title, and there is none to be had here. I have to totally disagree with the writer who says this recording is full of drama--I found scarcely any at all. This CD contains four pieces; of them, only the first, Arvo Part's Tabula Rasa even attempts an aesthetic involving drama, and that only in the first movement. The title of this piece comes from the term for the pure, naive and innocent mind before it receives the impressions gained from experience, and this idea pervades the entire CD. In place of traditional liner notes with information about the composers and their works, we are given obtuse and somewhat ominous quotations by the performers and composers, such as the following from Kremer himself: "Our despair: a drop in an ocean. Death--the final bill, in which the challenge turns into a phantom. Ambitions, hopes, enchantment. All this finds its peace there in the world beyond. Words irritate. Gestures mislead. Emotions dissolve. Only sounds speak a language that might be understood. If one opens the heart, would there be someone receptive enough? But who is listening? Who is able to feel it? Often I do ask myself, where does a heartbeat identical to mine exist? And the attempt of an answer is: out there, on the other end of my own sound."

In addition to "Tabula Rasa", there is another work by the Estonian composer Part, "Darf Ich" (or "May I"), "Company" by Philip Glass in an arrangement for string orchestra, and "Come In" a piece commissioned by Kremer from the little known Russian composer Vladimir Martynov. But aside from the opening Part work, I find that the intimate tone of the CD is too consistently bland for my taste. There are better quiet works out there, that reach into a deeper place beyond the mere superficiality of Martynov's lengthy but unengaging "Come In". Although he began his career in an interesting way, moving from early efforts involving serialism, to electronics, to the composition of a religious Russian rock-opera, at some point he embraced the ideas of "holy minimalism" and from my perspective seems to have eliminated all traces of interest in his work. It is difficult to appreciate a composer who comes out of the soviet oppression with the attitude Martynov expressed when discussing another of his works, "I was once told that man touches the truth twice. The first time is the first cry from a newborn baby's lips and the last is the death rattle. Everytthing between is untruth to a greater or lesser extent. So why not try to go all the way from the death rattle to the first cry, from the last opus to the first? But that might lead us to see Stalin standing on the Mausoleum as innocent and lofty as a swallow, and a swallow gulping a mosquito in flight would seem no less nightmarish and monstrous than Stalin, who destroyed millions of lives. All this is terribly confusing and it is much better to forget all the conundrums and sink into sweet melancholy. And let this melancholy last as long as possible; I suppose that's the only answer to the question of reality." In the work presented here, Martynov sinks into sweet melancholy again, which is pretty enough, but to my ear as bland as wallpaper. For the three or four minutes any single movement lasts it is fine, but the entire 6 movement work lasting 27 minutes is all exactly the same, without any contrast. Why would a composer in this century be composing music like this? Where is the artistry, the vision, the craftsmanship? All of the great Romantic composers, from Beethoven to Mahler, did this same thing long ago and so very much better. And of the Glass piece presented here, the less said the better. Even the fabulous performance by the Kremerata Baltica, surely one of the finest string orchestras around, cannot raise my interest in a piece (written as incidental music to a Beckett play) which simply rehashes the same Glass harmonic and rhythmic formulas he has been working on for 40 years now. As I listen to this, I can't help but think that Glass forgot to write the melody. To be honest, I find the piece so lacking in any artistic merit that I will not even play an excerpt for you. I hate to be a Grinch about this, but this is a CD that I hope I don't find in my stocking this Christmas. I know it is not popular here at Amazon to be critical of the CDs one reviews, but there is so much better music out there, even with this same introspective aesthetic, that I cannot recommend this at all except as a superb performance of the Part Tabula Rasa, which has in fact been recorded by Kremer before. It's not that I dislike contemporary music, or minimalism, or intimate introspective music; quite the opposite--it's that I find these pieces very poorly done, and extremely disappointing examples of their ilk.

5 out of 5 stars Silencio is Superb!.......2000-11-06

Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica deliver another excellent recording in "Silencio", on the Nonesuch label. Featuring music of three twentieth century composers, this CD contains performances which are moving and dramatic.

Arvo Part's "Tabula Rasa" gets its most spacious recording yet on disc. The first movement, "Ludus", is performed with long pauses of silence between the dramatic utterances of strings and prepared piano. At 10:21, this is longer than any of the other three performances I own of this piece. The second movement, "Silentium", times at 18:24, including about a half-minute of recorded silence at the end of the movement. This is over five minutes longer than Neeme Jarvi's fine recording for Deutsche Grammophon. But length alone is not the measure of the caliber of this performance - orchestra and soloists give wonderful, broad performances, letting this great work breathe calmly and fully.

The four short movements of "Company" by Philip Glass are rich with color and rhythmic energy. Fans of Richard Einhorn's "Voices of Light" will enjoy this brief work.

"Come In" by Vladimir Martynov was a revelation. I found a single reference to this composer on the web - it mentioned stylistic similarities with Arvo Part and an output of predominantly sacred vocal music. "Come In" is a meditation on a hymn-like tune; the tune is restated in each of the six movements with slight changes in structure. Each restatement is followed by a variation for two violin soloists. The music is sweet, romantic without becoming sickening, and gives the effect of joyful anticipation frozen in sound. You will not want this piece to end, and when it does you will have to supply the closure. Whether or not the door is opened will be for you to decide.

The program concludes with a premiere recording of "Darf ich..." by Arvo Part. It shares harmonic similarities with "Kanon Pokajanen" and is once again superbly performed by Kremer and the Kremerata.

This disc goes on my short list of favorite recordings. You won't be disappointed!

Director David Lynch's affection for kitschy lounge music and emotionally overwrought mid-century pop has long since proven to be more than trend or irony; indeed, it's often the uneasy spiritual axis of his films. The soundtrack of Mulholland Dr. turns on the usual Lynchian motifs (the brooding atmosphere of Angelo Badalamenti's ominous synth-and-orchestra cues tossed with a dash of Lynch's own off-center compositions), yet manages to evoke a sense of foreboding that's distinctly its own. Badalamenti leads off with a curve, the nervous orchestra swing-romp "Jitterbug," before descending into a dark soundscape that becomes murkier and more avant-goth at every turn. Bubbling through that morass are pop nuggets variously cheesy (Dave Cavanaugh's lounge-ready "The Beast"), lugubriously bluesy (Sonny Boy Williamson's take on Willie Dixon's "Bring It On Home"), and alternately innocent ("I've Told Every Little Star") and liturgical ("Llorando"). Three tracks of the director's own (cowritten with John Neff) skulking Lounge Music from Hell ratchet up the tension even further; it's the perfect garnish for this darkly delicious film-music cocktail. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars In this dream, you are Betty Elms.......2007-01-13

The reviews here simply don't do justice to the soundtrack. It's very hypnotizing and elevates you to this reality that you indeed have the same mental energy displayed by the first character of Betty Elms, who Diane Selwyn identifies with as herself in a dream she is having. The dark scenery conveyed by this music puts you in her place, where through darkness you hold to your innocence. The movie and music interplay in this way to the effect of putting you in that darkness where you are the same girl that Diane is seeing in her dream, the girl she knows herself to be without the hellish reality she is in as a sort of resolve to the hell she's in. This Naomi Watts specifically conveyed what I thought is a part of me that may also be a part of you, and you will notice it in the way you look at things and how your face expresses your innocence to a dark world. Then there is the music for Rita. I also reviewed the movie, which I also recommend. My favorite track is the 9th one in this respect. Secondly, which you may find suitable for your funeral, is the last song. The rest I almost prefer watching the movie and appreciating it all while viewing, but it's music you must have after you've seen it.

4 out of 5 stars Badalamenti does it again........2006-11-17

If you're a fan of Angelo Badalamenti's scores for David Lynch, you'll want to add this to your collection as well. Haunting synth pieces lull you into the dreamlike world Lynch created with this film, and there are some other types of music to jazz it up a little. Particularly striking is Rebekah Del Rio's cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying."

5 out of 5 stars Take a drive through David Lynch's musical hell and deluding darkness..........2006-06-26

To start of, I regard "Mulholland Dr." as David Lynch magnum opus, his most masterfully created cinema of deceit, lust and darkness. Compelling, totally deranged, original, sometimes hilarious funny, and three minutes later scary as hell.

David Lynch's movies are always heavy set on atmosphere, and this is partly caused by the director's long time musical collaborator Angelo Badalamenti. From the jazzy, loungy tunes for the t.v. series "Twin Peaks" to the dark overtones of "Blue Velvet", Badalamenti knows wich buttons to push to make an eerie composition, a few notes of estrangeness and give the audience an unsetteling feeling.

"Mulholland Dr." is filled with music. Most of it is purely on the soundrack with Badalamenti's score coming very close to high quality dark ambient acts like Lustmord, Raison d'Etre or Hazard, others are sung "live" in the movie, like Linda Scott's sweet bubblegumish "I've told every little star", two very hip tunes ("The beast" by Milt Buckner and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bring it on home") and of course Rebekah Del Rio's acapella performance of "llorando", the Spanish version of Roy Orbison's evergreen.

But the greatest surprise to me were three tracks by David Lynch himself in collaboration with one John Neff. And these three pieces are to be find on a solo cd by David Lynch called "Blue Bob".
I never knew before seeing "Mulholland Dr." that David Lynch is also a guiter player and singer. Now I know and I must say that his song "Mountains falling" is the most brooding, creeping, swirling and erotic sounding piece of electric guitar music I have ever heard.

So play this album and hit the road, Jack. And pray that indeed you will come back...

4 out of 5 stars dark and (often) beautiful.......2005-11-25

anyone who has seen mulholland drive knows that the soundtrack lent a very important hand to the overall vibe of the movie. so you would think that it would be hard to enjoy one without the other, but this soundtrack suceeds very well on its own. alot of film scores are fine and enhance the movie while yr watching it, but are trash when taken alone and this sndtrk is kind of above that. i'm not really big on any of the lynch/neff tracks, but they work fine in the movie. the other songs that weren't written by badalamenti are pretty good and are a nice change of pace. my favorite tracks are dwarfland/love theme (especially the latter half), mulholland drive/love theme, llorando, and diane and camilla. i dont believe that diane and camilla was in the movie, but its a very beautiful piece that i think sums up the diane/camilla relationship quite well. anyway, i really like this cd and anyone who enjoyed the film would do well to pick this up

5 out of 5 stars A dark journey through the sphere of horror........2005-10-26

It may not be a horror movie, but the score for Mulholland Drive could be a journey through the ultimate graveyard or haunted house on a stormy Halloween night. I have never even seen the movie, though I love David Lynch's movies for the most part. This score is a dark and haunting musical journey that might work well for a score to a creepy vampire movie or something. Some of it, including the heavy jazzy and dark rock pieces, might be better suited for a suspense thriller, which it is. But the more ambient dark themes could work in any supernatural thriller much as Mark Snow's music could. Enjoy the tour! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Being a pop icon is nothing new to the Grammy-winning, Puerto Rican singer/actor Ricky Martin. He was a child star with the '80s kid group Menudo. And he was a regular on the soap opera General Hospital. But he hit the big time in 1999 with his smash Anglo hit Livin' la Vida Loca. On his new CD, Martin returns to his Hispanic roots with this zesty Spanish language release, which translates as Souls of Silence. Backed by poetic and pulsating string/synth/horn production from Tommy Torres, George Noriega, Emilo Estefan and Stefano, this effort comes with all of Martin's grand moods and grooves. The fiery, flamenco-flavored "Jaleo" is rendered in Latin pop and hip-hop, Spanglish versions. Both takes, along with the equally danceable numbers like "Besos de Fuego," are designed to move your bon bon. But Martin's bolero ballads "Tal Vez," the title track, penned by the other Latin star Alejandro Sanz, and Ricardo Arjona's "Assignatura Pendiente" show that Martin can sing for the heart and the hips. With this effort, Ricky Martin moves into Celine Dion territory and may be able to keep his loyal Latino dance/ pop fans while making new ones in the adult contemporary market. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars I had almost lost hope till I heard this CD!.......2005-10-18

I've been a Ricky Martin fan for over a decade now but after "Living La Vida Loca" (and the few years after)I started to question my sanity for still hoping better times would come. So for the past few years I've just bearly kept tabs on what his new projects were, etc. wondering whatever happened to the Ricky I "knew" before he decided to crossover into the English Market. And then I heard about "Almas del Silencio". It took me many months before I risked buying the CD. And boy! Did I wish I had bought it earlier! It was amazing hearing him sing in his native language again! Like someone mentioned before, he does a MUCH better job in conveying emotions in Spanish. He really gets back to his roots in "Almas del Silencio". Even though I realize this CD is more an apologetic than anything else (If you were in Puerto Rico when his English CD came out you'll understand what I'm talking about!) I couldn't help but love it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente álbum. Excellent album!.......2005-10-18

Altamente recomendado.

For non-Spanish speaking persons, you should enjoy this production. If Hispanics that didn't understand much English were able to enjoy The Beatles and many great artists, the same could happen with Americans enjoying music in Spanish.

well, well it is hard for me to find words to describe what i feel for this singer especially for his music!!!, this album is great, i know is a bit late to write about this album when the next one which is "life" is about to come out but though, i would say that all the songs on the album are in my langauge spanish!,all the songs were perfectly done in all aspects eh!, there is nothin' bad i can find!, just another great production of the best singer ever, the singer who has the neatest appearance, the most attractive, it is not that i am in love with ricky martin, the thing is that i gotta say what is obvious is to be said, to be admired. thus, i am his biggest fan in peru i guess!, ricky if u happen to read this, write to me as soon as possible please1, i consider u the best person in the world, u are kinda the older brother i never had, i am calling every single day all the cd stores here in lima to find out if they have your newest cd "life" to fly there and get it!, maybe i can find it before the official date!, ricky i love as i have already explained before (to avoid bein' misunderstood) bye ricky martin!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!!!.......2005-08-11

I don't understand much Spanish, but Martin's voice is absolutely wonderful here! The ballads are VERY romantic and the "pop" style songs are very upbeat without being clubby.
I've listened to more than a few Latin artists (Sin Bandera included), and a lot of them are good at 1 or 2 styles of songs, but there's something about how Martin comes across on both ballads and the "pop" style songs. You can hear the feeling in his voice! I seriously can't say there's a bad song here!
Interestingly enough, when I heard the Spanish/English version of Jaleo it really sounds awkward. The words don't seem to mesh as well as when he sings it all in Spanish.
I have Martin's english albums and I like some of the songs on them, but he seems to put more feeling into his Spanish songs, and it comes across.
I've ordered the rest of his Spanish albums, and can only guess how good they'll be! Ok, now I've got to learn more Spanish!

4 out of 5 stars Imperfect compilation for one of the greatest rock in spanish bands.......2007-03-30

There is no doubt that Heroes del Silencio is one of the best bands in the short history of Rock in Spanish, probably only second to Soda Stereo. I have a problem with this compilation, altough it does have its wealth of great songs, they decided to throw in a lot of live songs, which is a mistake, that's why there are live albums, but they fell on this trap too. Second, the songs are out of chronological order which is forgivable but it does no let you appreciate the growth or progression of a band through the years. The biggest problem I have with this compilation is what they did with the songs from their first album "El Mar No Cesa - 1988" (The Sea Doesn't Stop), they remixed all these songs drowning all the synthesizers, and Enrique Bunbury re-recorded all the vocals, which shows that the band is embarrased of its 80s sound. I love this album and its sound, it's only my second favorite after "El Espiritu del Vino", it's a shame that they couldn't keep it as it was recorded originally. Heroes de Silencio only recorded 4 albums and they are all excellent, if you have the cash I would recomend you to start with their second album "Senderos de Traicion - 1990" (Paths of Treason) and/or their third album "El Espiritu Del Vino - 1993" (The Spirit of Wine), if you love them buy the other two. I still have my 4 cassette tapes, I bought this compilation with hope of not having to upgrade to CDs but it somewhat let me down, still if you are the kind who are into compilations this is a good way to discover a one of the greatest Rock in Spanish Bands. I've heard rumours that they are getting back together, hopefully they're true.
Lastly about the review of that "eclectic" guy, he's obviously obsessed with Morrissey and The Smiths, so probably he compares everything with them, I know everyone has the right to write an opinion, but if you don't know about what you're writing about, don't make a fool out of yourself. Heroes del Silencio is a totally different band than the Smiths, Juan Valdivia (Guitar) has a different style than Johnny Marr and Enrique Bunbury sounds nothing like Morrissey.

3 out of 5 stars Derivative.......2006-06-17

The guitarrist is derivative from johny marr, from the smiths, and the lead singer is derivative from morrison (and a little bit from morrisey).
Lyrics are sometimes a little bit pretentious, not much variation from song to song... the formula sticks with that 80's new wave only with a differente language.

5 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2004-01-07

I have liked El Gran Silencio's music on and off before and after this album. All I can say is that this is their very best up to date.
It's innovative how this album is presented as a radio broadcast. Plus the music with different cumbia variations makes it even more interesting.
Highlights are many on this one.
Worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars un disco increible.......2003-05-22

One of the most phenomonal disks I have heard. A smooth blend of spanish rock, cumbia and rap. Its a fearless album that takes its music to another, shaking off labels and letting the music speak for itself. El Gran Silencio combines great music with an incredible voice and words. There`s not a single song that I didn`t like.

5 out of 5 stars "La voz tambien es una arma".......2002-08-11

5 out of 5 stars Ozomatli has met their match!!.......2002-03-03

I checked out this CD after being blown away by Celso Pina's "Barrio Bravo" on which they appeared. Fortunately I discovered another gem out of Mexico. Being a product of my father's conjunto music as well as American rock, alternative, and hip-hop, I related to this CD immediately. Horns and electronic sounds fall nicely between catchy vocal hooks and a smooth rock/hip-hop style of rap. Even more refreshing is the accordian at the forefront of a ground breaking, cutting edge music. All of this sits nicely with Latin rythms (primarily cumbia) and a few rock beats as well. With unique song arrangements, a variety of scales, and great vocals, these boys are on to something big for the generation of latinos that fall between worlds of traditional and new. Weird, interesting, and dynamic, a must buy for those who appreciate artistic innovation along with good energetic fun.

5 out of 5 stars The pinnacle of Caifanes.......2006-12-30

This is undoubtedly one of the best Spanish rock albums released in th 90s, if not in history. Saul Hernandez's lyrics and Alejandro Markovich's guitar work is masterful. It's a shame that only four albums were produced under the name Caifanes.

Probably I'm sounding a bit biased but anyone who likes good music should buy this CD. All of their tracks are worth listening to. There's not a lot of LP's who can claim that.

Let's start top to bottom: 1-"Metamorfeame" catches the Grunge spirit that was going on in the early 90s. 2-"Nubes" is the best track of the album; you never get tired of listening to it; Markovich's guitar can sing as well. 3-"Piedra" is very cool to listen to, especially with the Norteno loop at the end. 4-"Tortuga" slows things down but it's worth listening to as well. 5-"Nos vamos juntos" is an epic five-minute plus song that will surely make you replay it. 6-"No dejes que" is the other really really great song here; Markovich's solo guitar here is as good as the one in Nubes. 7-"Hasta morir" is a slow song and it's still considered one of the best tracks.

8-"Debajo de tu piel" slowly brings things back to speed. 9-"Estas dormida" is an easy-to-listen song whereas 10-"Miercoles de ceniza" is harder and darker. The last part of the album gets more eclectic with 11-"El comunicador", 12-"Para que no digas" which is highlighted by Sabo's bass and 13-"Vamos a hacer un silencio" which is beautifully composed by Diego's sinthesizers The finale of a wonderful album is a bonus track "Mariquita", an old Mexican folk song.

5 out of 5 stars El Silencio de los Caifanes.......2004-12-05

5 out of 5 stars Caifanes' Best.......2004-05-12

Excellent CD. The super group, Caifanes, reached a zenith with this album. Undoubtedly the very best they produced. It is like a greatest hits CD. The lineup of Saul, Sabo, Diego, Alfonso, and Marcovich is great.

5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE.......2003-10-16

SAUL HERNANDEZ IS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED MUSICIAN/SONGWRITER THATS OUT THERE AND HE PROVED IT WITH THIS CD. I RECOMMENED THIS CD TO ALL THOSE WHO LOVE ROCK! ALL THE SONGS ARE GREAT ESPECIALLY "NOS VAMOS JUNTOS" AND "MERICOLES DE CENIZA" ITS A MUST BUY CD. I LOVE THIS ALBUM.

5 out of 5 stars Caifanes, El Silencio.......2003-06-26

5 out of 5 stars Heroes de Leyenda.......2006-06-24

This is probably the album that has meant more than a lot to me since the very first spin. My devotion to Heroes del Silencio grew from this album, and there are a few reasons. Heroes del Silencio was a band that had a few phases during their active life. Their first albums were more Post Punk oriented, bands like U2 or The Mission UK comes to mind. After "El Espíritu del Vino", they went on a harder wave, probably influenced by all the Grunge/Alternative fad from early/mid 90's. In "Parasiempre", they were able to seize their best songs from both periods and make them sound flawlessly even. Besides, Bunbury never sounded better, for his voice is so powerful that studio recordings sometimes makes it no justice. If you're a fan and don't have this: shame on you! If you're still to discover one of the greatest Latin Rock bands ever, "Parasiempre" is in my opinion the best way to begin. Don't forget this words when "Maradentro" gets you all misty and goosebump-y.

5 out of 5 stars Sort of like Pearl Jam and U2 together.......2004-07-05

My cousins from Spain gave me this CD! I'm glad they did because this record is very good. Once you get used to the lead singer's voice, you'll find that los Heroes can write some excellent songs. "Deshacer el Mundo", "Dias de Borrasca", "Para Siempre", "Hechizo", "Entre Dos Tierras".... the list of good songs go on and on.....
You know los Heroes have talent because they perform many acoustic songs that rock unbelievably good. "Mar Adentro" comes to mind....
This is a live album if you didn't know. I think the fact that the record is live also makes it more exciting, especially when the crowd is chanting "heroes" over and over.

Get this record! Even if you don't know Spanish! If you like u2 and Pearl Jam, get this record!

5 out of 5 stars sencillamente excelente.......2002-10-14

I love collecting live concert recordings and this has got to be the best ever...Heroes del Silencio is unbelievably amazing! I don't have the proper words to describe what an awesome album this is. This was the first cd I bought from Heroes Del Silencio and I just can't ever stop listening to it. They sound incredible live and just listening to songs like "Deshacer el mundo" and "Entre dos Tierras", "Maldito Duende", and "Oracion" WOW...it's awesome...just listen to it...you'll love it...and if you are not an HdS fan this certainly will make you one...and don't forget to catch Bunbury in concert this fall...he performs songs from Heroes and it's an unforgetable experience....Heroes para siempre!

This is a must have. If you haven't already done so, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing band........2005-07-18

I dicovered this band back in 1990, and all I can say is I haven't find any other band with the same feeling and dedication as this band. This band is not your average Spanish Rock band because other bands are just filled with mediocrity and no sense of melody.
As a professional guitar player I can tell you that the guitar work in the band is one of the finest and unique sounds that you can get in the whole Rock En Español scene. The lyrics and vocals are profound and obscure; Enrique Bunbury demonstrates his vocal abilities, showing that he's not an ordinary/average singer. You can truly feel the anger and power of the vocalist, and the lyrics clearly demosntrate Bunbury's fury and sense of imagination. Both the music and the lyrics create a very unique atmosphere which leaves me wanting to hear this album over and over again.

If you're looking for pure art expression manifested through music, I really recommend this album along with their other masterpiece "El Espíritu Del Vino".

5 out of 5 stars Best cd of Heroes !.......2005-05-24

This album is a typicially rock album starting with "Entre dos tierras" which was the first big hit of the band, "Maldito Duende" is a nice ballad, but "La Carta"is one of my favourite here on this cd.

The real winner here though is "Hechizo" which is my fave HDS song EVER !(along with iberia Sumergida and La Herida). Great rock n roll the way it should be, and the singer has the most uniqe voice Ive ever heard !! its just something about his voice that is so special, I think he sings uptempo songs much better then ballads but thats just me. Oracion is a terrific song which is probably on the more spiritual side while "Decadencia" is more hard rocking !

Get this if you are serious about Rock en espanol! its one of the first true rock n espanol classics

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATES AND FINEST SPANISH ROCK ALBUMS.......2005-04-05

I'm a big Heroes Del Silencio FAN, and of course I have all their records, My favourites album is "El Espiritu Del Vino" and this one "Senderos De Traicion".

Senderos de Traicion is very different with the other ones, really each album has it's own sound and spirit! The guitar arrangements are so unique, I have't heard anything like that before by anybody except by the hand of Juan Valdivia, it's just one of the best guitar players in the spanish rock scene, maybe the best!! They have all the spirit and passion in their music as well as the Flamenco music. But don't get wrong! they don't play flamenco. It's just pure rock n roll but at it's finest.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best album of the best rock group in Español.......2004-12-31

I have had the chance to rediscover Heroes del Silencio this Christmas. I grew up in a small town very close to the province of Zaragoza and I had heard a lot about Heroes well before "Senderos de Traicion" was released. At that time I didn't like the group much.
But then "Senderos de Traicion" came to my hands and I became a hard core fan of the group overnight.
I didn't like much the songs from CD's "El Espíritu del Vino" and "Avalancha" at the time of their release so I thought I didn't like the group anymore. But! This Christmas I have had the chance to listen to their songs again, including those I didn't quite like from "El Espíritu del Vino" and "Avalancha". What can I say? This group is just great! And although at this time I appreciate very much also the songs from the latter albums, "Senderos de Traición" is still my favourite. Heroes del Silencio is the exception to the mediocity that has been ruling the Spanish pop music arena for the past three or four decades. Their songs are timeless and their contribution to rock music are of immense value.

5 out of 5 stars El Espirito.......2006-04-08

I'm a Gringo. I don't even speak Spanish. I have a bunch of German friends that made me listen to these guys when I was visiting in 1993. I have to admit, I was hooked by the Heroes.

Any fan of real rock music--you know, with driving guitars; a throbbing, heartfelt vocalist; and that beat that makes you shake your ass--will completely appreciate this album.

People may label it Spanish Rock. I'm here to tell you it transcends nationality and language. It is Rock N Roll and you shouldn't miss out on the experience. Get it.

Viva Los Heroes del Silencio!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album and Great Combination of Multiple Rock Styles.......2005-11-07

I think this album is the soul of HS where they combined multiple musical styles and confirmed they are one of the most important bands in the history of Rock in Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars POWERFUL SPANISH ROCK FROM THE GREATEST HEROES.......2005-04-05

I am a big Heroes del SIlencio Fan, I have all their albums and each one of them have their own unique sound, they're all great! But this one, El Espiritu Del Vino, is the most powerful and rocking album of the band, each song is a masterpiece, the lyrics are poetry full of wrath, love, dispair, obssesion, sensuality, beautiness, passion...they simple blow your mind.

Bendecida (oh my god!!!!!! my favorite!!), El camino del exceso and La apariencia no es sincera are my favorites ones, I just can't explain you the energy they gives to me each time I sing them! Enrique Bunbury's voice simply gets you high and Juan Valdivia's guitar work is just amazing, also Pedro Andreu (drums) and Joaquin Cardiel (bass).

I can say this album is a great contribution to the spanish rock, maybe more than other albums from other bands, leaving without doubt tha Heroes Del Silencio really rocks hard in this one.

You have to buy this CD to know what I'm talking about, the finest spanish rock!! are you ready to blow your mind??

QUE VIVA SIEMPRE HEROES!!

5 out of 5 stars you should buy this even if you don't speak spanish!.......2004-09-28

sometimes I even fell sorry for the people who don't speak
spanish because they are really missing this band.

I discovered this band like 10 years ago back in my country
because I cousin told me about them and believe me I haven't
heard anything better since then (in spanish rock).
the singer is just amazing, the guitar player WOW!! he's my
third favorite guitar player ever, he is awesome and belive me
because I play guitar too.
This band a great melody in thir music so if you like melodic stuff believe me this is great, really amazing solos on guitar.

there is also a copilation out with their best material and it's good if you wan't to know the band but you know what?
they only have 4 albums and 1 of unrelease material called
RAREZEAS which is great also, so my point is: all their albums
are f**king amazing so I don't think you'll need that copilation.

so again I highly recomment this band you can't start with any album, I'll write them down for you:

EL MAR NO CESA
EL ESPIRITU DEL VINO
SENDEROS DE TRAICION
AVALANCHA
RAREZAS(UNREALEASE MATERIAL)

SO THERE YOU GO!!
