In fact, these works trace the evolution of the New York Philharmonic into a world-class orchestra in the late 1950s under Bernstein's hand. At this remove in time, we can almost hear New York in these works. One of the problems Bernstein's music has faced both on disc and in public performance arises from the simple fact that no one played it better than he did. Anyone who loves Bernstein's theater music has probably owned this CD or its LP equivalent for decades. The sonics are still great--the huge, lush sound that Cloumbia favored for the NY Phil. in Manhattan Center. David Hurwitz is silly to say that Bernstein's music has had "a problem" because he conducted it so well. There's no problem, but it's undeniable that LB was his own ideal conductor. Recently Carl Davis, an experienced film conductor, has led the Royal Phil. of London in the same program we have here. The sound is updated somewhat, and the price is ultra-bargain. So for the first time in forty years one can say that LB has a close rival in the West Side Story suite.

A composer/conductor at the peak of his energy level in some of his own most vibrant music, working with an orchestra that (in these recordings anyway) was an extension of his personality--what more could you possibly want? In later years Bernstein re-recorded most of this music for DG (including the WSS "Symphonic Dances"), and while those readings are technically fine, they miss a lot of the verve and New York atmosphere that this CD exudes. The version I'm writing about is a 2004 reissue with remastered sound and a bonus in the form of Three Dance Episodes from "On the Town."

I am not a hard fan of Leonard Bernstein , but there are exceptional cases like this in which you simply have yo say : Bravo Maestro !
The Candide overture is terrific . Based on the Voltaire work , the overture of almost five minutes is a tribute to the life . played with dyonisiac enthusiasm and overpassing passion .
The West Side Story Suite is extraordinary played . Personally I do not know about any other performance which can match with this one .
On the waterfront is simply brilliant . This is the soundtrack of that brave film of Elia Kazan of the early fifties .
And Fancy free performing only matches with another version of the same director with the Columbia Symphony of 1950 . I hace it in vynil , because believe or not ; this recording has not transfered to CD .
But this set is simply fundamental for you . Be or not a fan of Bernstein , because that inspired music represents the golden years of Bernstein as composer and conductor .
The New York Philarmonic members played as real Greek Gods .
Supreme majesty and overwhelming passion .

I bought this CD a few years ago just to for the "Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront," which is one of my all-time favorite classic film scores. The NYPO's performance is very robust and energetic, and easily the best version available of the piece. Bernstein recorded this same piece again many years later with the Israel Philharmonic, but I found it lacking the same drive and passion as the earlier one. The NYPO really captures the mood of New York and the struggle of the dockworkers, as Bernstein envisioned for the film. And they also splendidly perform the love theme, too.

The rest of the album is also very good, but they're largely his standards that you've probably once too often. "On the Waterfront" is certainly a treat for any fan of film music from Hollywood's Golden Age. One can only imagine what it would have been like had Bernstein scored more films, but apparently the experience he had (music was cut or removed around in the film) made him think twice. But this CD is a winner.

If I had to choose five recordings to represent Leonard Bernstein at his absolute best, this would be one of them. Made in the mid-1960's, these recordings have been reissued a number of times, but never sounding as natural as they do here. They show off some of Bernstein's best work as a composer, as well as his inimitable conducting talent and legendary rapport with the New York Philharmonic during that time.

The disc opens with the rollicking overture to "Candide" - totally infectious - and although some other versions (including Bernstein's later one for Deutsche Grammophon) may be its equal, I can think of none that surpass this one in sheer excitement and precision. Ditto for the sizzling suite from "West Side Story," which will probably remain definitive for many years.

The sweeping music from the film "On the Waterfront" is stirringly conducted, and the addition of the sparkling ballet "Fancy Free" makes this disc a serious contender for many "Desert Island" lists. As for the recording itself, the 1960's sound is excellent and quite listenable. Obviously great care has been taken to preserve the original source material after all these years.

If you want to experience the Bernstein legend, this is probably an essential recording.

    These performances, dating from the early '60s, are Bernstein being Bernstein - emotional and flashy. While it's good to have the master conducting his own works for posterity, some of the performances are, truthfully, far from his best. The "Candide" Overture is far more satisfying on the original cast album - here it seems forced, rushed and fussy. The "Waterfront" music has always struck me as bombastic and treachly - I guess Lenny thought he needed to hit moviegoers over the head (this was his sole effort as a film composer), and as lovely as passages of the dance music from "West Side Story" are in this suite, the whole business seems an after-thought to a great show. That leaves "Fancy Free," and there are far better recordings, including the one (probably out of print) Lenny did a few years after the premiere in 1943. That version, with the original recorded vocal prologue by Billie Holiday, was far livelier and rang with the big-band sensiblities of the era. Also better are the old Ballet Theater Orchestra recordings of the score. As for the sound on SACD, it's pretty miserable: Columbia was doing a lot of multiple miking by the early '60s but these recordings (all from different sessions with different producers and engineers) sound weirdly distance and unfocused, as though the mikes were in the upper balcony of a vast, empty opera house. I'd suggest you skip this and get the Royal Edition Sony CD which has the same recordings of "Fancy Free" and "Waterfront" and a big bonus - a short suite of Lenny's dance music for "On The Town."

    Seeing that the reviewer who inexplicably gave these great performances three stars got posted twice, I thought I'd add another five-star review to balance that error. Unbeatable recordings, and the sound is excellent for its era--big, broad, brassy stereo from the sixties.

    Bernstein leads these performances with snap, drama and excitement. The SACD remastering improves the original sound considerably.

Nevertheless, the DSD transfer of this SACD is superb and it allows you to hear clearly the difference of the tonal character from different recording sessions. Buy it if you're Bernstein's fan but if it's for sonic alone, you won't be satisfied with this album.

        For anyone who loves Bernstein (or even for those who don't), this is the CD to purchase. Includes excerpts from some of his most famous stage and serious works.

        It has performances with some of worlds top names, original casts, and later revisions.

        Once he departed for Europe, Bernstein rarely recorded again in the U.S. These recordings demonstrate his loyalty to the Israel Phil., with whom he duplicated many things he had already recorded in New York. This set is equally a testimonry to his love affair with the Vienna Phil, which sounds a little out of touch in American music. The original recordings from NY on Sony surpass the remakes in vigor and freshness. Even so, it's nice to get the Kaddish Sym. with revised narration, and to hear Gidon Kremer in the Serenade for violin and orchestra.

        This 7-disc set also includes later Bernstein compositions that never appeared on Sony, in particular Songest and Jubilee Games. But the singers aren't particularly good in the former recording and the piece isn't very good in the latter. All in all, I think only a Bernstein completist would seek out this collection. Better to stick with the wonderful recordings originally made in New York in Bernstein's heyday.

          This is a very good bargain version of some of Bernstein's most popular works. Although the performances here are not as distinguished as other conductors' renditions, it is very enjoyable. The orchestral playing is fantastic and so is the digital recording. I've heard Lenny's own versions of some of these works and in comparison this recording sounds more "orderly" and a bit less expressive. I really like it, though.
