Chopin: Waltzes Nos. 1-14
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Still regarded by many as the greatest set of Chopin waltzes ever recorded, Dinu Lipatti's performances continue to astonish. He strokes the keyboard with such delicacy, finesse, and, where required, unobtrusive strength that the music simply seems to play itself. All of Chopin's music is, of course, exceptionally well written for the keyboard, but the sense of rhythmic lift, the inevitability--these are the hallmarks of a great artist. It's terrible to think that when he made this stunning recording, Lipatti was already in pain and dying of leukemia; there's certainly no hint of it in his playing. EMI's transfer has been accomplished with considerable skill, and we can only be grateful that Lipatti was with us long enough to finish this affecting tribute to all that's most beautiful in life. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking.......2006-12-28
These extraordinary recordings by Dinu Lipatti are widely regarded as the benchmark against which all other performances of Chopin's waltzes should be measured. Frankly, Lipatti is in a category all his own and these performances render any comparisons pointless.
Lipatti had such a supreme gift as a musician that listening to him play is a unique revelation every time. Even if Chopin is not your cup of tea, hearing this is like stumbling upon a box of priceless, shimmering jewels that never seem to fade. It is not far off the mark to assert, as Karajan did, that when hearing Lipatti play the piano, you do not hear the piano but you hear something close to music in its purest form.
The Barcorolle, Nocturne and Mazurka are played just as exquisitely.
If you are only going to buy one recording of Chopin's Waltzes, this is the one to go for by a million miles.
Beautifully organized structure.......2006-09-13
I am a latecomer to the works of Chopin, unqualified to comment on Dinu Lipatti's technique and interpretation, but this recording gives an interesting framework to explore the waltzes. They are numbered 1 through 14 in order of opus publication, but on this disc Lipatti shuffles them to form a cycle of his own devising. There are four waltzes in the key of A flat and it seems one challenge was to space them across the recital. Contrast this to Alexandre Thaurad's CD where he clumps like-key waltzes into groups. (He also adds five more posthumous works.)
Most of Chopin's waltzes start on the dominant, meaning either the fifth note of the home key (the tonic, the I), or a dominant seventh chord (V7) which leads to the tonic. Lipatti uses this feature to string together his cycle. If, for instance, there were a waltz that ended on a C natural it could easily bring us to Waltz No 4, which starts on an insistent C7 chord before rising to the home key of F major. I will use this as the starting point for tracing the harmonic relationships of the tracks on this CD.
Track 1: Waltz No 4 in F, "Grande Valse brillante" - as noted starts on the V7 and finishes on F in octaves.
Track 2: No 5 in A flat - begins on a trilling dominant Eb, but the note it trills up to is an F (which ended the previous track). Finishes with a parting shot, a turn in the bass ending on Ab.
Track 3: No 6 in D flat, "Minute Waltz" - starts on Ab; the contour of the opening phrase echoes the gesture of the previous parting shot as well. Ends in Db.
Track 4: No 9 in A flat - has two pick up notes then hits a Db on the downbeat of the first measure. The right hand ends on the Ab above middle C.
Track 5: No 7 in C sharp minor - starts on a G sharp above middle C, which is the same black key (enharmonic equivalent) of the previous Ab. Ends in C# minor.
Track 6: No 11 in G flat - starts with a pick-up turn then hits the downbeat with a Db (enharmonic C#). Ends on a Gb in the treble clef.
Track 7: No 10 in B minor - starts quietly on the same note, an F# (enharmonic Gb). Ends with a soft B in the bass clef.
Track 8: No 14 in E minor - first note is the exact same B in the bass. Ends in E minor.
Track 9: No 3 in A minor - starts on an E in the bass melody. Ends in A minor; keep in mind that the minor third of this key is a C natural -- you can hear it in the melody of the third to last measure.
Track 10: No 8 in A flat - this is a side-stepping change of keys, but there is an harmonic link to the previous waltz. Instead of starting on the dominant, this one begins on the major third -- C natural.
Track 11: No 12 in F minor - starts on the dominant -- C again. Toggle back and forth between tracks 10 and 11 and you will hear that these two waltzes start on the exact same pitch. Instead of ending in F minor this waltz closes in the relative major of Ab. The last three notes are a rise and fall, Bb-C-Ab.
Track 12: No 13 in D flat - there is a leading note before the dominant. The first three notes (Bb-Ab-F) fall and rise in a mirroring gesture to the final phrase of the previous. Ends quietly in Db.
Track 13: No 1 in E flat, "Valse brillante" - another side-stepping key change but there is a connection. If you toggle between tracks 12 and 13 you will hear the same initial note, a Bb -- quietly in the former, boldly here. Finishes resoundingly in the tonic Eb.
Track 14: No 2 in A flat, "Grande Valse brillante" - introduction in the dominant chord, Eb7. Closes in Ab. From here you could loop around to the beginning of the cycle again, linking the major third (C natural) to the V7 that starts the F major waltz.
Tragedy, Rediscovery, and Harmonized Proportion.......2006-04-20
Having heard fawning comments about the Rumanian's perfection, as well as nasty ones about his reputation being "overblown" by an early death (as if it weren't the other way around), I decided to listen to the man himself.
After considering so many interpretations of Chopin's Waltzes, including that of Rubinstein and Ashkenazy, Lipatti's still remains in a class of its own. His interpretations are the most integrated, logical, and impressionistic, framed by swirls of pianistic colour (no wonder he was hailed by Poulenc in his French debut for "divine spirituality"!) that convey a breathtaking virtuosity. But his pieces are never "pious" or weighty -- nothing is overstated, and there is an element of charm and flamboyance (witness Waltz No. 13) in which he communicates refined emotion from a rich, tonal palette. A beautifully balanced and proportioned sense of structure permeates every piece.
It is difficult to categorize Lipatti. Overall, his style represents a perfect balance between the Classical restraint (Fischer, Schnabel) and Romantic sentiment (Moiseiwitsch, Horowitz) of his time.
...and I don't even really LIKE Chopin that much!.......2005-12-08
This is, note-for-note, about the greatest piano CD I've ever heard. He plays with so much freedom and groove, it's unbelievable.
Sometimes the only CD that can follow it is some Best of Art Tatum compilation. My favorite pianist is Thelonious Monk. My favorite piano composition is Beethoven Op.111. But this CD is outrageous.
Thanks to all you other reviewers for your much more Chopin-literate comments. I'll just say that anyone who loves the piano should own this.
Luminous.......2003-12-29
Yes, luminous is the word that describes Lipatti's recording of the Fourteen Waltzes best: "bright or shining, especially in the dark."
I bought this CD fourteen years ago, and since then I have not found an interpretation that even comes close to Lipatti's. His recording of Chopin's waltzes is worlds apart from those of all other pianists. No one else captured the terrifying and exhilarating coexistence of darkness and light in these ostensibly innocent pieces as convincingly as Lipatti.
Waltzes are dances of joy, very easy to learn and perform. Once very popular among all classes, their emotional range covered everything from the exuberant to the sentimental. Today, they have a reputation for either rustic fun or plain kitsch.
What Lipatti found in Chopin's waltzes goes far beyond the conventional. Played by him, these dances are testament to the pleasure to live in the face of suffering. Lipatti is the one pianist who can genuinely express both the joy of living and the awareness of mortality in as simple a piece of music as a waltz.
Playful, wise, sublime. Luminous. Listen!

Great Collection.......2006-04-09
This set of CDs is perfect for beginners to classical music since it takes you through the years of classical music from earliest to the most recent so you can hear how the music gradually changes over time. They go in order by the eras Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern so you can get a feel for what all of them were like, and style of each of them. They have some of the greatest hits of classical music by the greatest composers of classical music on this set. I got this set when I first got into classical music but I still listen to these CDs now because the performances are very enjoyable and the sound quality is great. This set of CDs is a must have for any classical collection.
Gotta have it!.......2001-05-21
This set of CD's is a must have.
You don't know what you're missing if you don't have these CDs in your collection. I'm a hip hop and R & B guy myself, but this collection gives me balance. You don't know music or really understand its power unless you hear and absorb the classics.

Customer Reviews:
A great first set to explore the poetry of Chopin.......2006-02-20
Here's a nice little inexpensive find that I have greatly enjoyed. Both American Garrick Ohlsson and France's Agustin Anievas are respected (but less known) interpreters of Chopin. Ohlsson's Complete Chopin Recordings are superb (Arabesque) while Anievas exudes a clean, uncomplicated Chopin style. First the concertos ... Chopin's two piano concertos are among the most popular in the repertoire. Their sparkling piano writing, endless streams of melody and rich, graceful harmonies make them perennial favorites. Somewhat unique is the understated orchestration that takes a backseat to the prominent solo-piano writing. Most other concertos are an equal give-n-take between the soloist and full orchestra and are thus more "symphonic" in the end result (Mozart's concertos are like this). Personally, I really like such a low-key orchestra compliment and rank these among my favorite in the genre.
Ohlsson recorded these concertos at least twice, this one being remastered in the 80's to excellent effect. Particularly gogeous are the famous slow movements which Ohlsson plays most mesmerizingly. His piano comes across bright, bold and with beautiful nuances of timbre while the orchestra recorded with perfect balance and life-like sound. EMI did a great job on this one. If you are looking around, there are scores of superb recordings around - Rubinstein, Perahia and Argerich being among the top choices.
Equally inspiring and enjoyable are the lovely Waltzes performed by Agustin Anievas. Chopin's Waltzes are among the most universally well-loved music around and for a good reason - they are ever-so elegant, full of life and reveal a special, joyous aspect of this composer known as "the poet of the piano." Equally evocative are the more melancholy waltes in minor keys. Famous performances of Chopin's Waltzes include Dinu Lupatti and Artur Rubinstein among others. But, Anievas gets some strong cudos for his relaxed, effervescent readings here that sparkle with life and radiate elegant simplicity of interpretation. Last, the Impromptus are some of Chopin's more understated but easy-to-enjoy works that are rendered admirably here. So, togther, these Chopin pieces are some of the finest in his ouevre and these recordings honor the Chopin as he wrote the music without excessive indulgance. If you don't have many or any Chopin recordings, you will probably enjoy this low-cost set and get the bug for more of Chopin's music. Compositions - 5 stars; Performance - 5 stars; Sound - 4.5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Pires plays Chopin.......2005-10-05
Maria Joao Pires is a Chopin interpreter par excellence. Her performances of these works always leaves me with a satisfied feeling within. Highly recommended.
Interesting, idiosyncratic, imperfect.......2001-07-14
Maria-Joao Pires is my favorite pianist. Chopin is my favorite composer. For sentimental reasons connected with my first years in Paris, the waltzes are my favorite compositions. All of that having been said, I must admit to some indecision about these two disks.
The waltzes are so crammed onto the second disk that there is scarcely a beat between any two of them. The result is almost one long waltz in 14 or more segments. I say 14 "or more" because Pires plays almost no two segments of any one waltz in identical fashion. Her diverse approaches to repetitions within a given waltz are fascinating: differences in tempo, in tonality, in use of pedal, in mood. In my many listenings, I have been tempted frequently to stop and replay in an effort to catch the nuances of this studio recording. Why the publishers of the waltzes have packed the disk so tightly is an annoying mystery. Justice is not done to the remarkable interpretations of the pianist. (The otherwise useless liner-notes remind us that "for this recording, Maria-Joao Pires has chosen the same order as Dinu Lipatti." While the respect for the late Lipatti is touching, Lipatti's placing of the "grande" and "brilliante" waltzes at the beginning and the end makes them something like bookends that obscure the more modest waltzes at which Pires excels.)
Although I am not as familiar with the concertos, I find this recording satisfying -- except in the upper octaves, in which the solo instrument sounds pathetically tinny, almost like the "plinking" of a toy piano. (I should speak, rather, of "one" of the solo instruments. The disk contains the almost unacknowledged solo work of Michel Garcin, one of the most respected horn-players of our day, performing here with the Monte Carlo Orchestra under the baton of Armin Jordon.) It is deplorable that the sound-engineers or producers (or someone) has failed to give Maria-Joao Pires the tonal reproduction that her extraordinary performance deserves.
Finally, it is a mystery to me why the line drawing of a naked woman graces -- or disgraces -- the packaging of these disks. The artist is an obscure Frenchman named Charlemont, whose only known relationship to Chopin was a sharing of some of the years of the 19th Century.
I would not willingly part with these disks -- but, technically, they do not come even close to the magnificent Pires recordings of the Chopin Nocturnes.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful set.......2004-10-24
This set is for serious piano fans, not for the ones who just start building up a CD library. I sort of agree with one of the reviewers, that there are many repetitions. But if you love piano, you wish to hear the same piece in different interpretations. Indeed, I really like this feature of this set: I can compare the style of various performers.
If you are into piano music, I encourage you to grab this set, if you can find it used (not available anymore at Amazon). I also hope, that there will be a continuation, in which other great pianists, who were left out because of the space limitation, will be included (Prokofiev, Bartok, Dohnanyi, etc).
Don't buy the whole thing.......2001-07-08
I've put a lot of thought into constructing my own piano library, and unless you can easily afford the present set, I would recommend a different approach to collecting piano music. This set emphasizes the piano player rather than the piano composer. Of course both are important. For example, the "Barcarolle" appears in this set EIGHT times. I'm sorry, although I love the piece, if I am going to spend [the money], I would prefer more variety. Where are the Alkan, Medtner, and Szymanawski compositions represented in this set? I appreciate having so many interpretations of the same pieces, but I would also appreciate more exposure to pieces not so popular. The selection by Philips which I consider a somewhat popular selection suggests to me that when Philips constructed this set, they realized most people would be buying the disks separately, and this affected the selection. And it's not just that obscure composers are left out, but also if one spends so much money on piano recordings, you'd think you'd want to buy pieces from a composer in completeness. For example, an alternative way to construct a library would be to combine purchases of complete cycles, e.g. complete Beethoven sonatas, complete Scriabin preludes, etc., along with outstanding recordings of more particular pieces. I'm not sure why someone would want to concentrate so much on so many famous artists, instead of acquiring complete sets of compositions. For me the composer is more important, or at least, if I am going to spend [the money]on piano recordings, I'd prefer more complete, rather than snapshot, exposure to the composers.
Not Insane.......2001-01-02
I had to write this review, as I am enthralled with this set. I have been going through it in order having already purchased a few individual units from the collection earlier. I am not sure what `insane' was talking about as there is NO repetition. Sure some pianists perform the same pieces, isn't that what they did in reality? The idea is to appreciate the different nuances and approaches taken by these artists. You will then enjoy these pieces from a better vantage.
It is a large ambitious contribution to the art of great piano playing. It is a labor of love and represents a tremendous amount of research and cooperation between many record companies. Rather then representing insanity, it is a resource to treasure.
Yes experts can quibble over who was left out, and what performances were inserted. I do not think such a massive undertaking could have been accomplished without someone being able to find faults. Overall however, unless you already have a monumental collection, (it would have to be almost legendary), this incredible set will give you a rewarding look into 74 of the greatest pianist of all time. You will come away with a honed sense of appreciation for your likes and dislikes. You will undoubtedly become someone who will search out recordings and be able to enjoy them for the rest of your life with a refined ear.
The only negative is this price. I would shop around, as it is daunting to spend 2 thousand dollars on such a collection. Of course you do get 200 CD's. However, the used collections might be good to consider.
Enjoy these masterpieces. I am not ashamed of owning this music as `insane' implies. I am proud to have enriched my life.
insane.......2000-10-12
This is not a good library of piano music. The reason is, there is too much repetition. I'm not saying the series is bad. The series is wonderful. But this collection as a whole is a bad libary. For the same money you could collect together (with more effort) an incredible libary of piano music. There are so many wonderful cd's out there, this is just a waste of money. If you can actually afford to spend 2 grand on piano music, then either (1) spend the time and do some research to get a good library of piano music, which will probably include some selections from this collection, or (2) hire someone to do that for you. Personally I would be embarrassed to own this whole collection, since that shows I have put little thought into my purchases of piano music.
For the real music lover.......2000-03-12
This series attempts to present important and representative performances by most of the major pianists of the 20th century. One might quibble a bit with the choices, but the works presented are of consistently high quality, and often do represent what may be the best works of a performer. Since this covers most of the time that recorded music existed, some of the recordings are technically challenged, as there is only so much one can do to enhance an old recording. Still, these appear to have been treated with love and respect in their restorations. Since this series is so large (and expensive!) one is tempted to "cherry pick" through the series, yet by doing so one can easily overlook gems by artists one is less familiar with. This large a set must inevitably have many versions of the same pieces, and takes many hours to listen to. The true enthusiast will appreciate the differences in interpretation, whereas the less experienced listener may find the set repetitive and overwhelming. If one has the time to really dig into this set, it can provide years of exploration and discovery. It would make a wonderful gift for some special music lover in your life ... or for yourself!

Customer Reviews:
Educational. Not entertaining........2001-01-11
Thinking the 100 tracks this four volume set has to offer would be a relaxing in the car, or underscored during work time, I found the compilation of various composers to be rather jarring. Each CD contains 25 tracks of different movements from 6 to 8 artists, which don't follow any pleasing through line. If you are interested in learning just who composed which famous piece, or if you need to have on hand the top 100 classical pieces (according to whom? I don't know), then this may be right for you. If you are looking for leisure then I suggest you find something that actually completes a symphony.
