Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, and recently re-released.......2007-04-18

This CD has been re-released by Hannssler Classic. The ensemble is now called the Chamber Choir of Europe rather than the Nordic Chamber Choir, but the recording is the same one, made in 2000. The CD is fantastic, absolutely first-rate -- please see other reviews here, and my review under the new listing.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, full, thoughtful... occasionally slow........2006-04-29

I own several CDs featuring Lauridsen's music (Los Angeles Master Chorale, Polyphony, Robert Shaw, and this one) and I think I would rate this one as my overall favorite (although very close to the Polyphony/Stephen Layton recording). The Nordic Chamber Choir's tone is simply wonderful and they take every piece thoughtfully and carefully. At times this leads to slightly slower tempos than I would have liked, but it's entirely possible I'm being too picky.

I definitely prefer the tone quality of this recorded-for-CD chamber choir performance over the Los Angeles Master Chorale's live, dramatic, reverberating one. That has it's place, but I definitely prefer the intimacy of this. Polyphony's recording also reproduces a beautiful, intimate tone on their CD (and they feature the orchestra instead of the organ, which is a HUGE plus) but they lose some of the pathos and fullness by rushing in some spots. I guess I'd prefer performances that keep the phrasing but slow it down enough to really let you hear what's going on in the music. The Nordic Chamber Choir definitely tends more toward the latter, which is good.

All in all, it's a wonderful CD and Lauridsen's music is simply captivating. If I were to recommend only one Morten Lauridsen CD, although it would be a tough choice (no orchestra! no Ubi caritas!), this one would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Deep Stuff .......2004-11-04

If you've never heard the music of Morton Lauridsen, please know that I envy you. I envy you because you possess a gift which I can never again claim as my own, and that is the opportunity to experience this marvelous CD for the very first time.

Lauridsen, a phenomenon of American music and a legend in world choral writing circles, composes deeply profound, heartfelt music which is at the same time uplifting, always radiating with hope. Even those who are not classical or choral music fans will be strongly drawn to it.

Please take note of the 2nd of Lauridsen's Chansons des Roses, entitled 'Contre Qui, Rose', which I believe contains one of the single most perfect moments in all of music. This alone is reason enough to buy the CD, but its the Lux Aeterna, written in 1997, which is the real highlight of the disk.

Also recommended is Arvo Part's 'Te Deum', Henryk Gorecki's 3rd symphony of sorrowful songs, John Rutters requiem and John Tavener's 'Tears of the Angels' and 'Song of the Angel. If you like Lauridsen, these are guaranteed to please, big time.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A THOUSAND STARS.......2004-08-25

This is definatly some of the best choral music written in the 20th Century. The Nordic Choir does an AMAZING JOB performing these choral cycles and also Lauridsens very popular masterwork, O Magnum Mysterium. This music will whick you away into a world of excruciating beauty. This is very meditative and peaceful. I reccomend this recording HIGHLY. This is a much better performance than the LA Master Chorale.
Also reccomended - Eric Whitacre Complete A Capella Works

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful.......2003-01-18

I was not familiar with Mr. Lauridsen but purchased this CD as I like to collect various interpretations of O Magnum. This is quite simply some of the most beautiful choral music I have ever heard. This is a must for any serious collector of choral music.
