Seven: A Suite for Orchestra
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Famous for his role as keyboard player in the progressive rock band Genesis, Tony Banks has always been fascinated by the idea of writing orchestral music. Five of the seven pieces in this orchestral suite were written specifically for the Seven project; the remaining two were older pieces. Throughout the seven movements Banks creates intense orchestral sound pictures. The calm serenity which characterizes the main themes of the separate movements is often contrasted with uncomfortable stormy turbulence, the overall result being a scenic overview of orchestral colours and timbres.

Customer Reviews:
Classic.......2007-07-14
Very interaning, you can tell his's classic training. It flows from one peice to the next. I really enjoy it.
Thank you, Mr. Banks!.......2006-11-12
There is a tendency with classical music fans to confine the definition of that style of music to the eras before they were born. I think that is a mistake with modern composers, one of whom as shown great skill and potential for more: Mr. Tony Banks.
Mr. Banks' unusual chord structure in use with an orchestra creates great emotion and wonderful sense of energy. Tony Banks' style in Genesis, so unusual and adored in the progressive rock world, is shown with all grandure in the classical stylings presented in this music.
I look forward to any orchestral music Mr. Banks wishes to write.
I may not know classical, but I know what I like -- and I like this........2006-04-24
Keyboardist Tony Banks always tried to keep some elements of classical/progressive in the music of Genesis, even as his bandmates Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford led him further down the pop path. It's really pleasing that he finally let his classical training have full rein on "Seven".
I don't pretend to be an expert on the history or structure of classical music. However, I think Tony did an excellent job in producing interesting orchestral work here. As the liner notes describe, the pieces provide a lot of variety and contrast. My favorites are "The Ram", the most dynamic and forceful piece, (perhaps most distantly related to his rock work) and the gentler "Earth Light" at the other end of the spectrum. Still, the whole CD is really nice from start to finish and is hardly boring or bland.
The only drawback is that you don't get to hear much piano from Tony, this being a suite for the orchestra. Maybe next time, he'll be able to write a piano concerto or solo pieces for piano in the same mold. Until then, "Seven" is a good debut for Tony as a classical composer, the best thing to come out of the breakup of Genesis.

I concur with the other positive, masterfully written reviews I've read here, and won't bother addressing the detractors, so I'll be brief. I'm trying not to wear this album out by repeat-listening (especially 1st thing in the morning)... so please, Tony, write more symphonic music! If you composed 12 more suites, I'd order them all sound-unheard. If that sounds like I'm not picky or lack dynamic tastes, you'd be mistaken. I listen to music that ranges from light to dark - baroque to 20th Century - fusion to prog - serene to bombastic. After a few listens, it became apparent that Seven would become a staple in my collection - something I'll listen to for the rest of my life. Tony Banks is truly gifted, and someone I've followed since '77.
Tony does not apply his talent on Seven.......2005-02-06
Seven is a complete disappointment to me. I am one of Tony's hugest fans, I own every conceivable studio album that Tony has been a part of.... I know that he is capable of spine-chilling chord changes and time signatures.... but I must say... Tony, where are you on this album?? I can't hear you anywhere! Maybe I am not listening hard enough, but should it be so difficult?
If you want to hear some decent classical music, pseudo-composed by Mr. Banks, then might I suggest The Wicked Lady soundtrack, which is a hundred times better than Seven. I must admit, there are moments, very brief moments, on Seven where Tony shows his true colors, but they are few and far between. If you are looking for an album to put you to sleep at night, then Seven might be perfect for you. But if you want to hear anything exciting by this artist, then I would certainly not put this album on the list... not even at the bottom of the list.
Sorry, Tony... I still have the utmost respect for you, and I know there's some good music left in you... but I just wasn't hearing it on Seven. That is all. Believe it or not, I consider myself an optimist, and I still very much look forward to Tony's next album. (There is going to be a next album... isn't there, Tony? Please?)

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Customer Reviews:
Dull Epics.......2006-09-27
EPICS is plagued by the muddled sound of TELARC's recordings. I noticed this trend beginning with TELARC's Hollywood's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. The recoding seems flat. Also, this recording is a bit bombastic and just not representative of the original scores. The Suite from Gladiator is a good case in point. It glosses right over the basic themes presented in the film with an annoying nonce lance.
Very Disappointing .......2006-09-27
EPICS is very disappointing. It is nowhere up to the usual standards of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The recordings are harsh and just too showy. There is no heart, only might and if these are supposed to be epics, what is MINORITY REPORT doing there?
Chilling versions of the best scores ever written.......2004-04-24
This cd is an essential for any person that particularly enjoys the score in films. Epics is a full length cd containing 14 songs performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under Erich Kunzel.
Usually, I am weary of cds that come out with songs from movies that aren't the original recordings, but I have to say there should be no worries with this cd. The songs remain exactly the same in tempo and sound as you hear them in the movies.
The choices for this cd was amazing. Every song that you hear are the songs that make the movie it is in, most often giving you chills and goosebumps as the music encompasses you into the movie (like what happened to me when I saw Lord of the Rings). From the Theme from 2001: a Space Oddysey to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones to Lord of the Rings, these songs are performed beautifully with a clear and crisp sound.
I am hoping for an Epics II to be released someday, but in the meantime, check this out, you will NOT be dissappointed!

Customer Reviews:
Totally infectious.......2003-01-07
Shostakovich is mostly known for his serious works, his symphonies and string quartets, however he wrote a large number of film, incidental, and ballet music. This CD compiles many of his waltzes and some other pieces from these. While this is mainly what could be considered "light" music, many of the pieces have wonderful melodies and coloful orchestrations.
Some of my favorite waltzes include the one from Return of Maxim, the one from Golden Hills, and the one from The First Echelon (aka Waltz #2 from the 2nd Jazz Suite). Beyond the waltzes there are some other pieces, including the famous Polka from The Age of Gold and Folk Festival (Spanish Dance) from The Gadfly.
The only caveat is that some of the pieces don't reference their original source (rather they are listed as being from various ballet suites, when they in fact come from The Limpid Stream and other sources), but this is a very minor complaint. The performance and sound is wonderful, and unless you are one who can't stand this sort of compilation, it gets my highest recommendation.
Surprisingingly enjoyable stuff.......1999-10-04
After years of my hearing and not thinking very much of Shastakovich's symphonies, this Delos delight came as a total surprise. Containing just under an hour of mostly waltzes mixed with some polkas, a galop, and even setting of "Tahiti Trot" (inspired by "Tea for Two" of all things), this concert gives us a rare chance to hear a good deal of music this composer wrote for films seldom if ever seen outside of Russia as well as some more familiar stuff from his ballets. Not one really great piece, nor not really boring one. Just a boxful of what Thomas Beecham used to call "Bonbons" from a very unexpected source. Lots of fun from Delos.

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Wolcum Yule.......2006-01-17
The recording is fine . . . it just didn't appeal to me personally
lovely and unusual Yule album.......2004-01-06
Anonymous 4 has brought us a beautiful selection of 19 traditional songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These include a lesser known work by Henry VIII as well as more contemporary songs by John Tavener, Richard Bennett, Geoffrey Burgon and Benjamin Britten, and a piece commissioned for the group from Peter Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King accompanies on Irish harp, Baroque harp and psaltery. There is a short essay on the traditions and legacy of the concept of Yule, a Cetic midwinter celebration, and this and the informative liner notes are given in English, French and German, accompanied by Celtic drawings.
The songs are pure, simple and very beautiful -- a welcome addition to your holiday listening.
Goose Flesh!.......2003-12-09
This is a remarkable quartet, singing with purity and style, from the haunting to the merry, medieval chant to modern settings of Celtic religious texts. Where there are arrangements, they are lovely and the instrumental pieces are simple and beautiful. This is the first time I have heard this group of women, and I am enchanted. It's a cappella at its very best: look to your laurels, King's Singers and Chanticleer, here come the ladies!

Remember Earl Wild...?.......2005-08-02
Sometimes it takes a while before a man becomes a legend. With the rebirth of appreciation for the "Romantic pianists" (pianists who took great liberties with scores when the composer was in the tradition of such changes in his lifetime - like Liszt, etc) comes a renewed appreciation for the piano mastery of Earl Wild. Somehow always under the shadow of his contemporaries such as Rubinstein, Horowitz, Serkin, et al, Wild had a strong following among a few orchestras and devoted recital attendees. But in his lifetime his popularity waned when he began emphasizing his own 'transcriptions'.
Well, now with the release of this never less than interesting CD the artistry of Earl Wild is bound to gain a new applauding audience. These pieces are his own transcriptions of well known works by composers such as Saint-Saens, Handel, Rachmaninov, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Kreisler, and some of his own 'homages' to Faure and Poulenc. The playing is incandescently romantic: for sheer exhilaration of excitement these transcriptions are inimitable. The only other album to some close to this is Wild playing Liszt's transcriptions of operas!
This is a well-produced and very fun album for any mood. And it just may well be the kind of entry to the big works that young people need! Grady Harp, August 05
AMAZING!!!!!.......2000-09-06
As a pianist myself, I truly appreciated this cd. Wild is a genius! I especially loved "Reminiscenes of Snow White". I'm positively dying to get my hands on the score of it!!!! Very well done!!

Album Description
In 2006, Deutsche Grammophon and Decca jointly presented a visionary initiative for recording and releasing orchestral concert performances: DG Concerts. This series combines digital downloads with traditional CD releases to create a new model for symphonic recordings. Through partnerships with orchestras from music capitals around the world, the two labels will release an average of four live concert recordings per orchestra each year for digital downloading only. In addition, one concert per year--the highlight of that season--will be released on CD.
DG Concerts: Strauss is the first CD release from this innovative new series and the first recording from the New York Philharmonic on a major label in many years. The Philharmonic boasts an enormous tradition, having been led by legendary music directors including Bernstein, Boulez, Mehta, and Masur. Composers such as Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Mahler, Strauss, Stravinsky, Copland and Walter have all also presided over the NYP. Lorin Maazel, the current conductor, who has led more than 150 orchestras in more than 5,000 opera and concert performances, became Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in September 2002. He has also led the Orchestra on tours to Asia, three southern U.S. states, the American Midwest, and in residencies in Cagliari, Sardinia, and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado.
Customer Reviews:
Maazel is efficient, but the NY Phil. is glorious in this live concert.......2007-03-18
The classical world has caught the download bug, as witness DG's live recordings with various American orchestras. This 2006 Strauss program with the NY Phil. marks their return, however brief, to a major label. Maazel has recorded a lot of Strauss, most recently for RCA with the Bavarian State Radio Orch., and he can exhibit his dreaded quirkiness and oddball phrasing. Here he doesn't, fortunatley, so we can sit back to relish the wonderful sound of the NY Phil. at its best.
One forgets what a supreme ensemble this one is, despite a decline in reputation that began the day Leonard Bernstein stepped down nearly four decades ago. They deserve better than Maazel, whose technical abilities are unparalleled but who seems to have nothing personal to say in Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration, Salome's dance, or the Rosenkavalier Suite. These readings are straightforward and effective without being memorable. That's too bad, but the pleasure of having the orhcestra back on center stage rates four stars anyway.

Haydn was not a pianist of any distinction, nor a very successful composer of instrumental concertos, but his piano sonatas--and there are more than 60 of them--are much finer than those of Mozart, who was one of his era's greatest keyboard virtuosos. The reason for this is simple. Mozart wrote his keyboard concertos for himself and his sonatas for students. Haydn, on the other hand, was constantly stimulated to write piano music for gifted amateurs, though in those days amateurs were often as good as the professionals, particularly women for whom a concert career was out of the question. This is great music then, charming but never trivial, and John McCabe plays it with impressive style and vigor. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Nice Set...not a great performance.......2005-05-08
As a pianist myself, I was very interested to listen to Mr. McCabe when preparing my M.M. degree recital, in which I performed Haydn's Sonata in E minor, Hob:XVI/34 (I will refer to the sonata by the Landon number rather than the older Hoboken number).
Mr. McCabe certainly plays quite cleanly, as one would expect in this day and age. In addition, he provides extensive program notes (Mr. McCabe is a respected musicologist)
Unfortunately, Mr. McCabe isn't quite the performer one would expect to produce the entire output of Haydn's Sonatas. First of all, his tempos are usually not well suited to the music's style (whether in the Allegros or Adagios). Though this has somewhat to due with his lesser technical ability, it also has to do with his idea of interpretation, which to say the least, is quite boring. In the Sonata No. 34, the opening movement has a very particular character. Though it is one of Haydn's few sonatas in a minor key, the opening motive returns in many forms throughout the first movement. Mr. McCabe seems to miss the point of this, along with the importance of articulation (which is of utmost importance in the music of Haydn).
Mr. McCabe uses far too much pedal throughout (especially in the first movement). In the second movement, his imprecise pedaling detracts from the recitative quality (this movement being influenced from Haydn's knowledge of vocal writing and operatic traditions). The third movement is quite slow and the lively character is missing.
I don't believe that one can put Mr. McCabe's recordings on a level with great Haydn interpreters such as Ax or even Richter (with far more color and more adherence to the musical style). This is unfortunate as it comes from such a respected musicologist.
As a final note, it is nice to own this collection to have all Haydn's Sonatas and his output for piano at your fingertips, but I would recommend Ax (or Andsnes in the future...his Haydn Concertos are fantastic).
Much unknown music to assimilate.......2005-04-19
I can partially share one reviewer's opinion that much of this music seems repetitive and certainly that is somewhat the case, but I only listen to one disc at a sitting. It takes time to get to know these sonatas. The Mozart sonatas are more widely performed, and therefore known to the music listening public. At this point in my experience, I must admit that I prefer the Mozart sonatas, but I am gaining an appreciation for those of Haydn.
The quality of the recording is good with very little background noise or noticeable distortion. The piano seem OK for the type of music and if one reviewer thinks these are twangy, listen to these sonatas on an eighteenth century pianoforte.
Mr. McCabe is a competent player without any idiosyncracies which seems in keeping with these sonatas.
I received a boxed set that had two disc sixes and no disc three. Ah, German precision.
the greatest penny a note composer.......2005-04-02
I have listened to all 62 sonatas for keyboard and perhaps 3 of them rise to the level of wonderful composition. If you listen to them you hear he doesn't really "get started " until about sonata 32, compared with say Beethoven who except for 3 or 4 composed 32 of the greatest piano sonatas the world will ever hear. I have attempted to give Haydn a fair hearing for symphonic ( boring ) and keyboard works but for the most part he must get the award for not really being able to put 2 consecutive asthetic notes together. The Nelson Mass is very nice. And I know in his last years, Europe just adored him. He was earning upward in todays dollars of $85,000, which just galled Mozart. Finally the sonatas are performed and recorded well. Before purchasing these sonatas listen to the clips and see if you dont want to run screaming into the night, but if you are a boring person with absolutely no musical asthetic, these sonatas cant be beat!
The best complete set of Haydn Sonatas at any price.......2004-05-22
Other individual performances may "grab" you more than these, but as a whole I could not find fault with these performances. They are particularly satisfying if you follow with a score - you get to see the choices in ornamentation, dynamics, etc. that McCabe makes compared with what is on the printed page. I did several comparisons with other performers (I own 4 complete sets of these sonatas and several smaller compilations), and McCabe consistently comes out on top overall, in my opinion. Haydn's best sonatas are consistently more inventive, witty, and daring than Mozart's and are definitely worth your attention.
Excellent performances of rarely heard works.......2004-05-16
Rich & delicious entertainment. Delighted that one can enjoy this beautiful music of pieces which are rarely publicly performed.
