Tango: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
While director Carlos Saura employs the eponymous, erotically tinged ballroom dance form both as vehicle and metaphor for his film's storytelling, Argentine composer and film and TV scorer Lalo Schifrin in turn uses the film's score as framework for a rich musical tapestry that stretches from the traditionally familiar ("El Choclo") to the dark, rhythmic fury of his own classical-dance fusion ("La Represion"). Schifrin, a six-time Oscar nominee and winner of four Grammy Awards, spent his early career as pianist for tango composing legend Astor Piazzolla; that experience, along with his accomplished classical, film, and jazz work, has informed a score that may both surprise traditionalists with its adventurous diversity and give the rest of us a thrilling introduction to a vibrant musical form that continues to evolve. Interspersed with Schifrin's marvelous original compositions is a generous sampling of traditional tango music from composers such as Piazzolla, Canario, Salgan, and Filiberto. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars A+ music but the CD case is cracked........2006-05-20

I should have saved $4 by buying it used. Then I would have expected a cracked CD case. Why is there no quality control for CD cases. It is a shame because the music is fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-09-29

This is the first Tango CD I have purchased. The movie is great and the soundtrack is great! Everyone that has listened to it has bought it! We use it regularly at our Argentine Tango lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2005-04-11

If you haven't watched the movie...watch it you will be mesmerized....much of which is the responsibility of Lalo Schifrin's music. I watched the movie last night...and I can still feel the haunting measures marrauding through my brain. Damn, there is so much great music in the world & so little time & money to absorb it all in....this is a great purchase.

5 out of 5 stars very few voice pieces.......2002-12-24

The music on this CD is fantastic, but mostly instrumental. Not all songs from the film were included. The most notable omission is Quién hubiera dicho ('¡Qué cosas, hermano, que tiene la vida!'), which in the movie came right after the opening credits. Nevertheless, it's a wonderful selection of tangos, and I recommend it.

Yes, it's true that 90% of the time Broadway fans will want the original Broadway cast recording over any other version, and 95% of the time the full recording will beat any set of "highlights." But this collection of songs from the Rent movie may defy both trends. Rentheads surely have the two-disc Broadway version already, and this well-selected 65 minutes may satisfy their desire to have performances from the movie as well (and the movie has less music than the show anyway). On the other end of the spectrum, people who enjoyed the movie but don't feel the compulsion to own every note of what they heard might well be pleased with a single disc of highlights. Pick it up and live La Vie Boheme all over again. --David Horiuchi

Album Description

One of the longest-running shows in the history of Broadway, and one of its most beloved, Rent was the winner of the Pulizer Price for Drama and four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Based on Puccini's classic opera "La Boheme," Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic in New York's gritty East Village. Now the powerful musical marks its tenth year on stage by coming to the big screen, acompanied by RENT Highlights From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

This is the perfect CD for those who love the music from the film, or even the Broadway show. I just bought this CD because I am new to "RENT". I first saw the movie 2 weeks ago and I am completely hooked!! I am also addicted to this CD, I listen to it atleast once a day (if not more)!! This is perfect for any "RENT" fans out there!!

I loved Rent, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money for the full version of the soundtrack. Highlights from Rent was PERFECT! It has all the main songs from the movie I was looking for, and that was important to me. I play this soundtrack constantly, from beginning to end, singing along the whole way. Every song on her deserves to be on here - it's amazing.

This is truly a highlights cd, with the only dissapointment, to me, being that the song "Another Day," is not included. But the rest of my favorites Without You, Rent, Tango Maureen, and, of course, La Vie Boheme, make this a great cd for any Broadway lover.

5 out of 5 stars Was very very impressed with special features.......2006-03-24

An original "Rent Head", I saw this movie at the cinemas and was less than impressed with the finished product. I found that on watching the DVD I have since completely changed my opinion. The CD is fantabubulous - I love IT!. It is all the wonderful music from the movie and if I gush anymore it will come across as very very ridiculous! Just buy it - its great!

It is an absolute must for anybody who fell in love with the musical!

4 out of 5 stars Vivacious.......2006-12-20

I do think that possessing a fondness for the film helps (of which so many here have expressed), but by no means is it necessary. If anything, I find the seldom, more reflective, somber moments ("Mi Otra Mitad de Naranja") to capture the film's oft-haunting imagery to beautiful effect. The rest of the score, in my case, doesn't work as an album because of what it guts out of the film; it works because it's fabulous music.

Very distinct, too; I've never heard a film's score sound quite like 'Waking Life'. Really, that's where most my admiration comes from; it's not only an enthusiastically charming score, but it's uncommonly unique. That always earns points, whether or not the music is appealing; 'Waking Life' is effortlessly both.

4 out of 5 stars dreamy but refreshing.......2006-03-09

I bought this because I loved the movie, both visually and philosophically. The soundtrack goes very well with the movie and is responsible for much of the surreal feel of it. But even listened to independently it's great.
The recording is kind of raw, there is little processing, and it may even be considered careless, but that's part of its charm.
The sound itself is pretty original (to me anyway). It's strings (one violin, one cello and one double bass, I think), piano and accordeon. The result is refreshing. That's probably the best word to describe this: refreshing, and of course, dreamy.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky, Fun, Fantastic.......2004-01-14

I know nothing about tango; I got this soundtrack because I like the movie so much, and the music is such an important part of the movie's wandering, convoluted and dreamy feeling. I don't think I'll probably buy other Glover Gill albums, but this one is wonderful -- I often put it on while I'm working; it's great background music but it somehow manages to stay in the front of your mind.

Some reviewers have lamented the inclusion of Chopin's Nocturne on the album, but this CD was my first experience of the piece, and I love it. It has a totally different flavor from the rest of the tracks, so it provides a nice break.

The only bad thing about this album is that it gets a little repetitive. That's part of the nature of the music, which makes sense in the movie, but because many of the tracks have these climbing melodies that repeat and spiral ever upward, I find that after one listen to the whole thing I've had enough, and I'll stay away from the CD for a while. But that doesn't diminish its value in my opinion -- certainly one of the more interesting soundtracks I own, and I recommend it especially to people who've seen the movie, but also to the more adventurous of those who haven't.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!!!.......2003-09-12

Recently, an Austin friend turned me on to a Glover Gill CD called Solo Tango. I liked it a lot and so looked him up on this site to see what else of his I could find. After reading the reviews of this one, I sort of half-heartedly ordered it.
Mistake!!! This is a fascinating piece of work. No, its not warmed-over Piazzolla as some have insinuated. The mere fact that it displays the characteristics of "new tango" doesn't automatically mean that the music will be a Piazzolla clone.
I've listened to and enjoyed lots of tango in my life, from the Guardia Vieja all the way through El Troesma to the present, and I can hear plainly that Glover Gill knows tango. The brooding melancholy jumps out and if you close your eyes, you can imagine being in the arrabal. Guess I'll have to see the movie, too!
Those familiar with tango of the 20s-40s will recognize snippets of some of the most famous tangos expertly worked into Gill's compositions. This is a great CD to kick back to and just enjoy. I've had it on all day soaking up its many pleasures. If I had to chose a favorite piece, Nocturna and Super Sport would vie for that honor.
If you have an open mind about tango and the possibilities of the genre, you should find as much to enjoy here as I do. I look ahead with eager anticipation to the next offering of Glover Gill and his Tosca Tango Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous entertainment in itself.......2003-01-01

This soundtrack is actually quite incredible, an excellent achievement despite what some others say. The music has a distinctive quality that makes it entertainment all on its own; it hardly needs a film to go along with it (although the film was fantastic).

One of my favorite aspects of the music is that it doesn't remind me of certain parts of the film-- I do like being reminded of parts of films in some soundtracks, but this is great.
An exception is track 8, El Cholulo, which brought to my head images of the group of people just tangoeing, and it was actually a good thing to have a familiar image for part of the film. I also love the opening and finishing tracks, which are quite haunting and beautiful.
Simply listening to the samples in the record store, my face broke into an involuntary smile as I listened to it...
Enough said. This is great music. Get it.

4 out of 5 stars If you want to discover the Argentine Tango world.......2007-01-04

If you want to discover the Argentine Tango world, the tango lesson is a good movie ... Based on the experience of Sally Potter who met the tanguero Pablo Veron ... Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Paris (France) are the two main cities of tango.

3 out of 5 stars Tango Great/ New Age Music No/ Strange Mix.......2006-01-01

If you love tango music, you will love the classic pieces here, but be prepared to have the interspersed New Age musical tracks jar you out of your tango mood. About every other track is insipid modern background music of no distinctive interest. Keep your finger on the skip button. Enjoy the tango numbers of Hugo Diaz, Anibal Troilo, Juan D'Arienzo, Osvaldo Pugliese, and the nuevo tango composer and performer, the famous Astor Piazzolla....The liner notes are excellent....I have not seen the movie so I am judging the soundtrack on its own merits as I see them, independent of the film itself.

3 out of 5 stars The Tango Lesson.......2005-09-08

My wife loved the movie hence the purchase of the soundtrack. Every other cut is an actual tango but the other stuff is some kind of new wave John Tesh-like dreck.

5 out of 5 stars The Tango Lesson.......2005-07-28

Although I have not seen the picture, the sound track is exellent, as a tango music lover.

Looking forward to see the film.

5 out of 5 stars Rivals the Movie.......2003-08-16

I enjoyed the movie, "The Tango Lesson". (If you have not seen it, rush to the video store NOW!!!) Somehow, the soundtrack seems to surpass the movie. Perhaps it's music sans dialogue. The tango collection presented here is NOT the lush classical arrangements currently popular and popularized. They are quirky, many include voice (the idea of a voiceless Tango is relatively new), some incorporate the "dance" sounds of the movie, some are classics - all are outstanding works of art. Additionally, the CD notes are outstanding - almost a novel. This is a real winner!!

Steeped in controversy upon its release in 1973, director Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris has since been called everything from nonutilitarian pornography to a cinematic masterpiece. Two key elements that Bertolucci utilized to breath life into Tango's nihilistic themes and the dark, obsessive relationship at its core were Marlon Brando's harrowing, largely improvised performance and the erotically charged jazz score of self-taught Latin sax virtuoso Gato Barbieri. While the musician's main theme has become a much-covered jazz standard, it's but a tantalizingly sexy sample of the cross-cultural stylings at work in this masterful score. While Barbieri rerecorded the core of his Tango music in lush, fleshier arrangements for the soundtrack album's initial release, this Ryko edition (nearly twice the length of the original) augments those tracks with a compelling half-hour suite of cues culled directly from the film's scoring sessions. By turns stark and sentimental, erotic and experimental, these previously unreleased cues form a revelatory new "second movement" to Barbieri's hauntingly familiar score. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A rare and great jazz soundtrack.......2003-10-19

The movie was shocking enough, but the music from the soundtrack blew me away, just listening to the music can recall every graphic and tragic image of the film. Its the frist time I every appreatiated that gerne of music its as classic as any music score every created, Brennie Herman would be proud or was if he had the chance to hear this wonderful movie score.

5 out of 5 stars Here you can listen to your favorite scenes........2002-03-04

I first felt in love in Last Tango In Paris by listening to Marlena Shaw singing "Last Tango In Paris," just the tunes captured me. Later I bought the film, and one step further I bought this CD. Here I can listen to my favorite scene, i.e., the dancing scene from the "The Last Tango in Paris Suite 2-4", and other extra songs, e.g., "Why Did She Choose You?," "Goodbye." And it does not stop here, the CD inlay gives you memorable photos from behind the scenes, the motion picture itself, and two ca. A 4 posters (not separated, one on each side).

Strongly recommended for Last Tango fans.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Reminder Of My #1 Film.......2000-12-04

If you don't love the movie as much as I do, this might not be a 5 star album for you. Since it recalls the film perfectly for me, it makes that grade. Normally, I do not listen to tango music but again, it fits with the film. It is a very lush and beautiful score and, like all soundtracks, it has many repetitive elements. It is all instrumental. It can be very bold and strident at some points so be ready for that facet if you are trying it out over a candlelit dinner! If you are not a fan of the film, I would advise you to listen to selections from it first.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC REPACKAGED...FINALLY!.......2000-11-07

Well, it's about time! This wonderful soundtrack has been out-of-print for about 15 years since UA folded, so imagine my elation when I glimpsed that it not only included all the standard cuts from the 72 release, but the long-awaited original cues from the film itself (Gato and Oliver Nelson re-recorded the themes for the 72 soundtrack)!

Granted, I've listened to these songs so many times in the passing decades that at moments they teeter into parodies of tango, but that's not Gato's fault; it's just cognitive dissonance. Aside from the great "Ballad" treatment of the raw main theme, there's the rapturous "La Vuelta", "Return" and, best of all, "Why Did She Choose You?", which will knock over anyone who spent a rainy day in Europe loving or lamenting love with a cigarette and a cup of espresso.

Special mention must be made of the original sound cues included herein for the first time on disc. I was always peeved they were missing from the 72 release. The killer cut is the first of the suite of 28 cues which was used over the Francis Bacon paintings for the Main Title sequence. Oh, this is so low and raw and beautiful, and Bacon's paintings of distorted men and women are forever wedded in my mind with these mournful strains.

Jazz Maestro Oliver Nelson has done an excellent job of draping Gato's gutter-cry sax with lush strings, and the orchestrations get even more interesting on the "Suite" of cues to follow. In the decades since this film arrived, I've yet to hear another score with these peculiar colors, which for lack of a more appropriate word, can only be described as "uterine" in the best sense.

Praise to Rykodisc for going the extra mile here. I do wish the cover art was a booklet instead of a fold out, and an enhanced trailer clip would have been swell, but, nah, small complaint.

5 out of 5 stars erotic, passionate, intoxicating, enveloping.......1999-07-10

I have searched for close to 25 years for "Last Tango" CD. The music is absolutely breathtaking and haunting. It's one of those albums that will stay a rare classic for years to come...
