Brahms: Clarinet Sonata In E Flat/Clarinet Sonata In F/Schumann: Fantasiestücke,Op.73
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The account of the sonatas from David Shifrin and Carol Rosenberger brings unalloyed pleasure. Shifrin's limpid tone and unforced lyricism, together with his appealing gentleness, hints at the fragility that must have caused Brahms to describe Richard Mühlfeld's instrument as "fräulein Klarinette." The two allow the music to make its own points: the wistful lyricism of the E-flat Major Sonata, which has much in common with the piano pieces of Opus 119, is contrasted nicely with the almost operatic expression at times of the F Minor work. Delos provides an intimate, close-up recording with a lovely salon ambience--in keeping with the disc's thematic re-creation of a musical soirée of November 13, 1894, at the home of Clara Schumann. --Ted Libbey

Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Wonderful chamber music by Brahms and Schumann for clarinet and piano.......2005-12-26
I got this CD for the Schumann: Fantasiestucke, Op.73, after hearing a wonderful performance of it, and the Brahms Clarinet Sonata no.2 in Eb Major, performed by two Curtis Institute of Music students. As beautiful as the Schumann Fantasiestucke, Op.73 is, it doesn't seem to be recorded that much by clarinetists.
Note: I am writing as a non-clarinetist.
David Shifrin has a very beautiful, liquid tone throughout. Carol Rosenberger seems a very fine pianist, and a very able musical partner. Technically, he seems assured and very polished, though I wish he and she had been a bit more involved and varied their dynamics more.
The performances here are not as ardent or gripping as the Curtis Institute of Music students I heard, nor as fine I think as those performed by Kalman Berkes and Jeno Jando on the Naxos label ( the latter recording with the Brahms Two Songs, Op.91 for contralto, clarinet and piano) - hence the four stars. They are solid performances of wonderful chamber music I'd jump at the chance to hear in concert.
I'm glad to have this recording.
Good, clear sound.
Fantastic Recording!.......2005-10-01
This recording of the Brahms is excellent. Shifrin has a beautiful, clear tone. However, he also has enough tonal flexibility to create dynamic, well-shaped phrases that are never boring, but always tasteful. The piano player is also very good. My only complaint is that the more aggressive movements (I'm thinking the 4th movement of the Fm sonata in particular) are sometimes a little too tame for my tastes. They're still beautiful and well played, the Brahms Sonatas to me are largely about contrast. The first sonata seems to exhibit this more than the second (although the final movement of the 2nd sonata clearly demonstrates the contrast that Brahms can bring to the same theme!). The first movement can be explosively passionate at times, and seconds later is restrained and introspective. The entire second movement provides a drastic contrast to the first in terms of style. I think that the contrasts of the piece are best exhibited if BOTH ends of the spectrum are fully explored. Shifrin is a master of the delicate, but his powerful and aggressive is a little lacking for me at times. While I personally would list Stoltzman as my favorite Brahms, I think Shifrin's is a more polished and tasteful rendition that definitely deserves to be heard.
Where I feel Shifrin REALLY shines is in fantasy pieces. For a piece that is so highly regarded within the clarinet repertoire, this piece seems to me to be under-recorded. I've had a difficult time finding a recording that I enjoy. I've played the piece on a few occassions and it is deceptively difficult. When played right, it sounds quite easy, however it is a very difficult piece to pull off. The piece requires many things that are difficult to play well on an A clarinet (which is notoriously resistant compared to the more common Bb clarinet), and in some spots, the balance between the piano and clarinet can be difficult to voice clearly. To top that all off, the piece has relatively few rests which makes pacing one's breathing and phrasing a major concern. Perhaps as a clarinetist I'm drawn in more by Shifrin's technical mastery than the music itself (although the music is brilliant), but when I hear him play this piece (along with the pianist how handles the piece very well) I'm just blown away. If you love this piece, you have to hear this version. It is, from what I've heard, by far the best.
superlative.......2005-08-16
The compositions here are fantastic and the playing is as well. The sound quality is excellent. Recommended without reservations.
The Benchmark Brahms Sonatas Recording.......2004-01-23
Towards the end of his life, Johannes Brahms met the clarinet virutoso Richard Muhlfield, and out of this friendship came several beautifully personal chamber pieces: the two sonatas, the trio with piano and cello, and the quintet. These are some of the most intimate pieces in the clarinet repertoire and are frequently performed by students and professionals everywhere.
David Shifrin is one great clarinetist who truly loves to play the Brahms sonatas. The sonatas are a test of tone and musicianship, and Shifrin does this every so irresitably. This disc is a classic and surely would please all who listen to it.
A Romantic Journey.......2002-02-28
Romantic in the style of course... Two of the greatest friends and composers of the romantic era on one c.d. This is so wonderful, three of the most beautiful sonatas written for the clarinet (sorry viola players!!!) together as they were playes back in the late 1800's. You can almost see Brahms sitting in the living room of the Baron's house while Muhlfeld played clarinet and Clara Schumann played piano. Mr. Shifrin plays these so beautifully. His sound is so rich and his interpretations are lovely. There is a real understanding of all three pieces. I believe the F minor sonata is the most understood by Mr. Shifrin. He doesn't over ornament or exaggerate things that are commonly done by other players. He stays close to the interpretations that the composers wrote. Worth a listen!!

Customer Reviews:
A great compilation.......2004-04-25
Ever since I got a disc of Alfred Brendel playing Beethoven's favourite piano sonatas, I've had a special attention for his recordings and his view on music. To me, he is one of the best examples of a perfectionist. Lazy listeners call his way of playing pedantic but that is completely untrue. Listen more closely to any of is recordings and you'll hear an endless variety of colours, the most shimmering nuances and above all, tremendous warmth. But he is certainly not a perfectionist in the negative sense that is sometimes attached to the word: aside from being imposingly musical, his performances always have a great feeling of 'humanity'. There are many other great performers of the German repertoire (from Haydn to Brahms) but Brendel's recordings have a special familiarity to me, and he gives more than anyone else the feeling to me that the composer's genuine thoughts are present in the performance.
Brendel has a very special tone that accustoms itself very well to many different kinds of pieces. One of the essays in this great set deals with the many different sounds Brendel can create at the piano, something that intrigues me very much too. It is fascinating to hear how he touches the keys in his Mozart and Haydn recordings: here, he gets a sound out of the grand piano that sounds almost like the ancient fortepiano. Combined with his sharp and almost biting playing, he preserves some of the spirit of the time in which the works were composed, but combines this with the much richer and detailed sound of a modern instrument. Haydn's sonatas sparkle and so do Mozart's concertos.
In his Beethoven recordings, which are very well represented in this set, Brendel uses a somewhat similar style, but adapts more to the Beethovenian sound world: his tone is still aggressive but a little mellower and greater. He focuses a lot on small details and plays with a rather gentle sound in the variations, while his Hammerklavier doesn't avoid the grand gesture. The Piano concertos with Levine are full of joy and superbly crisp. Beethoven's works can be performed in a more massive or sweeter way, but that's what other recordings are for.
Brendel's Schubert is very notable for its total avoidance of the sweet and precious image of the composer that has settled somehow. Here, Schubert is presented as an ultimately dark and despairing composer, an image that is very appropriate regarding his general output. While Brendel sometimes tends to calm a bit of the hysteria in pieces like Beethoven's Appassionata, in Schubert he mainly emphasizes it. Hear how he attacks the Wanderer Fantasy, especially in the last minutes. Or how severely he gets the A minor sonata D784 to its throat. This is essentially the way I think Schubert should always sound.
It will be surprising for some to notice how much of Liszt has been recorded by Brendel, and also to hear how they sound. The Liszt recordings in this set show the composer from his most intellectual and imposing side. Brendel may generate an enormous sound that not everyone will associate with him from "Orage" in the Années de Pelerinage, but it is impressive rather than showy. Similarly, the Sonata receives the most detailed and complete performance I've heard, the Piano Concertos are simply stunning on all accounts and the variations on a Bach cantata show both the composer and the performer at their very best. It may be surprising to hear but I think you won't hear any better Liszt than this.
Finally there's a box dedicated to Brahms and Schumann. Brahms is another surprise. Brendel's D minor Concerto is one of the most impressive readings I've heard, close to Serkin/Szell, and his B flat is fine too, if a bit less impressive. His playing style here somewhat resembles that of his Liszt: it is rich, grand and always commanding. Few performers are as well able as Brendel is to match the endlessly complex musical thread of these two concertos. The fourth Ballade op.10 settles among the best readings - Kempff, Arrau, you name them. The Schumann pieces are performed in a way resembling Beethoven's smaller works: they create the same familiar living-room image, and it gets even more beautiful when oboist Heinz Holliger joins him to play a few folksong-like pieces. The set closes with a wonderful Schumann fantasy.
The track listing say that there's a bonus disc included as well, containing Brendel's first recording of Liszt's Christmas Tree suite, but my own set did actually not contain this bonus disc. With or without that disc, this is a set any piano aficionado should not miss. The only drawback can be the price, which is pretty high (not surprising with such a huge set)--if you can find it at all, now that the set seems to be OOP. At any cost, this is one the best box sets I own. If contains a thorough look at one of the most profound and intellectual artists of recent time and gives endless enjoyment.
Liszt.......2001-05-11
I recently purchased the boxed set of just the Liszt items from The Art of Alfred Brendel. I learned to love Schubert piano music by listening to Brendel, but Liszt was something of an exploration. And what a guide to take you on the journey! If you get the opportunity to get the Liszt set don't turn it up in preference to the more respected composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert etc.
Incomparable Brendel.......2000-12-29
I wish to focus on the works of Liszt included in this gargantuan package. Brendel is held in universal esteem, regarded by many as the greatest living pianist. His reputation is of unimpeachable musicality and seriousness of purpose (which does not contradict his ability to find musical humor wherever it lurks). He shows unparalleled ability to get to the musical core of the "Great Repertory" (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms); his performances leave mere pianism far behind. His championing of Liszt's music is especially important for just this reason. Liszt is too often accused of flashy superficiality. Nobody can accuse Brendel of this fault. And his Liszt recordings are among the most intellectual and probing, yet most moving, of any. He reveals Liszt as a daring and supremely important master. The pyrotechnics of the piano concerti are invested with real meaning, and the utterly spare, laconic late pieces become profound meditations on the human condition. His readings of Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude and of the Variations on Bach's "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" make one grateful for the very existence of music -- and for the capacity to capture it for posterity in recordings.
Beutiful.......2000-04-05
This is beutiful music. I have played some of his pieces on my flute and they are absoultly gorgeous. If you are a true classical music lover then you must buy this and have many nights by the fire with this wonderful music in the backround.
