Brigadoon (1991 London Studio Cast) [Cast Recording] [Cast Recording]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Lerner and Loewe's classic Brigadoon shines in this 1991 studio recording led by celebrated conductor John McGlinn three years after his stunning reconstruction of Show Boat. Broadway stars Brent Barrett (Chicago) and Rebecca Luker (revivals of The Music Man and The Sound of Music) star in this fairy tale about the Scottish village that appears for one day each century. Favorite songs include "I'll Go Home with Bonnie Jean," the gently lilting "Heather on the Hill," "Come to Me, Bend to Me," the standard "Almost Like Being in Love," the comic "Love of My Life," and the yearning "There But for You Go I," and the 79-minute running time allows for plenty of dance music and underscored dialogue. The booklet includes an essay on the show, an interview with the original director, a detailed synopsis, and lyrics, dialogue, and even stage directions from the original 1947 production. Brigadoon doesn't get much better than this. --David Horiuchi

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Lerner and Loewe's classic Brigadoon shines in this 1991 studio recording led by celebrated conductor John McGlinn three years after his stunning reconstruction of Show Boat. 5 out of 5 stars Brigadoon, the London cast.......2007-02-21

This album is beautiful. The arrangements and the singing are beyond compare. As a director, it gives some fresh ideas for musicality and arrangement. I appreciate another venue from which to enjoy this wonderful musical!

5 out of 5 stars Brigadoon - the audio recording.......2007-02-14

Far better to listen to the music than see the movie! The voices were beautiful, especially on "There But For You Go I."

5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic!.......2006-08-02

How wonderful to have a complete, beautifully performed recording of this great (and somewhat forgotten) show. When it opened it was slightly overshadowed by Rodgers and Hammerstein (who around this period had South Pacific and The King and I running simultaneously), but what a gem of a musical. Don't go by the truncated film, except for the breathtaking dancing of Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, it's whittled down to 5 songs from the broadway score and hugely disappointing. You can even tell all the sets are painted backdrops.
But this recording is a charmer and couldn't be cast better. Rebecca Luker and Brent Barret are perfect as Tommy and Fiona. And Judy Kaye runs away with the recording with her comic turns.

Turn up the volume, sit back and get lost in Brigadoon!!

2 out of 5 stars Brigadoon 1991 Studio Cast.......2005-08-14

I am no theatre critic, and I have never seen Brigadoon on the stage, nor have I heard the original Broadway cast recording. The MGM musical was my only reference point, until I bought the London revival CD.

In the MGM musical, one hears the prelude and the title song in full, at least in the beginning. In the 1991 revival, they talk all through the title song, beginning and end. It happens to be a sublime piece of music and lyric, beautifully suited to the story, and I would rather hear it in its entirety.

The sound quality of the 1991 revival CD is poor. The dialogue, though not a major part of any musical recording, is muted in comparison to the volume used in the songs. In the original cast recordings of, say, Man of La Mancha, Annie, and 1776, the sound is studio quality and there is no trouble hearing the spoken word.

The website where I located this CD described it as a "concert recording," and presumably they wanted to preserve the sound of a live stage production. I did not realize the sound quality was not going to be equal to any of the original cast Broadway recordings I have ever heard. Purchasers should be aware of this.

Once I got over the difference in the production sound, the numbers were done well. The MGM musical, of course, had to omit quite a bit of song and story, but people may be better off with the original Broadway cast recording to obtain the numbers not found in the MGM version. Gene Kelly didn't have much of a voice, but it seems he sung "The Heather On The Hill" with more sincerity and feeling than did Brent Barrett. Kelly seemed to be less concerned with the number as a vocal performance, which was not his forte in any case, and this rendered his performance less of a musical abstraction. Mr. Barrett, however, sung with more feeling in "Come to Me," a song omitted from the MGM production.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Recording of a Beautiful Musical Score.......2004-09-27

A wonderful, relatively new cast recording of this classic American musical. The songs are, of course, simply lovely. Some of the orchestrations sound a little hokey (for some reason, "Heather on the Hill" sounds more like a square dance than the gorgeous tune I remember Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse dancing to in the film version of "Brigadoon"), but the songs certainly stand the test of time, and manage to reflect the show's "adult fairy-tale" charm. Isn't it about time someone brought this warhorse back to Broadway? Guess we'll have to be patient. In the meantime, this album is a more-than-sufficient substitute. (For the sake of comparison, pick up a copy of the MGM movie soundtrack of "Brigadoon" starring Gene Kelly. While Mr. Kelly's vocal limitations are pretty obvious, the orchestrations are beautiful and, in my personal opinion, far outshine the understandably "stagey" orchestrations on this and other live cast recordings.)

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful: Can't get these songs out of my mind, June 20, 2000I picked up this recording on a whim, and now I can't put it down! The songs are simply beautiful. Whether they were arranged to overcome Gene Kelly's vocal limitations, to accomodate the movie's emphasis on dance -- versus singing -- or simply to compliment the gorgeous melodies, the orchestrations are sublime and have a surprisingly contemporary sound, especially considering the recording dates back to 1954. "Heather on the Hill" has never sounded better. I'm not crazy about "Almost Like Being in Love" (I think I overdosed on this one about thirty years ago), but even it's quite tolerable on this recording. Among the most pleasant surprises are songs such as "There But for You Go I" and "From this Day On" that were cut prior to the movie's release: What on earth were the powers-that-be at M-G-M thinking? Guess we'll never know but thank goodness someone had enough sense to save these precious recordings.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2006-09-09

This is the best version of Brigadoon. The story and music are so romantic and charming, and the original cast always delivers the most heartfelt performance. The voices of David Brooks and Lee Sullivan are sincerely warm, and the ladies hold their own when it comes to the vocals. A lot of other reviewers complain about the poor sound, but quite frankly, it didn't bother me at all. I didn't even think about the sound quality....I was so delighted by the enchanting music. Skip the movie version....many of the best songs are omitted (including my favorite, "Come to Me, Bend to Me".)

5 out of 5 stars Brigadoon - the original cast recording.......2005-07-14

Granted, most of all of the reviews written here pertaining to this original BDWY cast recording just isn't fair. Remember, in 1947, all we had was 78rpm phonographs (the LP wasn't invented until the next year by Columbia, and RCA didn't go to LP until 1950), and who ever heard of "High Fidelity" sound back then? Granted, there was "Orthophonic Recordings" (electrical recordings), but this process was still limited to the quality of the electronics in the control room (one microphone usage, and of limited quality being a condensor mic) and of the pressings of using the shellac material-not vinyl as we know of today. The "LP" release of this recording (the LOC-1001) was made transferring the audio from the 78RPM metal masters-why of the 5 cuts per each side on the LP(or a 5 record set for the 78rpm release). Also, back then, the recording sessions were not recorded on tape, but was actually cut directly on the wax masters, then processed to metal masters for stamper manufacturing. Recording technology was still using the direct cut method from the early days of accoustical phonograph recording. We have to give the bygone eras a chance of being proven innocent with the technology that they had back then. We must realize that what we have now wasn't back then and cannot make sound judgements on what is with us now and expect that to be the same of yesteryear. This recording is quite a tribute of such a production and written piece and it deems the rightful place in the history books as such.

5 out of 5 stars The best vocal performances of the show.......2005-02-17

Although I am only familiar with BRIGADOON from its MGM film version and its several cast recordings (have never seen the stage show), it is one of my favorite musicals. The Lerner and Loewe score is one of the most enchanting and beautiful ever written for the stage. The monaural sound on this original cast album is not great, but is also not as bad as some would like us to believe. Several of the numbers had to be truncated to fit the limited playing time of a 78-RPM side, and much of the dance music was a casualty of this. BRIGADOON was originally recorded in March 1947 on 5 78-RPM records (10 sides) but has been nicely remastered for this CD release. This was one of the first original cast albums by RCA--sound quality on early RCA cast albums can't compare with the superior recording technology used by Columbia at the time, which itself had only been doing cast recordings since the previous year or two.

Most of the cast has long been forgotten (as has happened with too many musicals of this time period) but the best performances are still had on the original cast album. "Waitin' for my Dearie" and "Almost like Being in Love" have never been sung better. When Brigadoon went to Hollywood and MGM in 1954, a good chunk of the score was scrapped in favor of more dance music to highlight Gene Kelly's and Cyd Charisse's dancing talent (the soundtrack album does feature the outtakes, though). There are obviously holes in the score as heard here, but all the important songs are there. I usually believe that a show sounds its best when sung by its original stars. No exception here. This is the one to start with.

FLASH: Out of print for years, the glorious 1950s Columbia studio cast album starring Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy, arguably the best recorded and best sung BRIGADOON recording, is finally slated for CD release on March 22. Stay tuned! Have the LP, but I'll be first in line to get a copy of the CD!

3 out of 5 stars The first Original cast album from RCA Victor.......2004-02-20

One of the other reviewers has stated that BRIGADOON was a failure. It most certainly was not! It ran well over a year, turned a healthy profit and toured for several seasons. The movie version, though not a success with critics, was an audience favourite and was profitable for M-g-M. There were successful revivals at City Centre throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The 1980 Broadway revival was not well recieved but many regional and community theatres continue to revive the show and the New York City Opera had a good production in the 1980s. It's fine if you don't like the show, but don't try to rewrite history to prove your point!

This Cd offers a short selection, due to the time limits of the original 78s. The cast s good but not sensational. The score, however, is one of Lerner and Loewe's best and every song is a gem.

A 1954 Columbia album with Shirley Jones, Jack Cassidy and the wonderful Susan Johnson sounds much more theatrical and is more complete. It is now out on CD from DRG and I suggest getting in instead of this edition.

This was RCA's first original Broadway cast album. Six months later they recorded ALLEGRO and HIGH BUTTON SHOES. They also recorded BONANZA BOUND during its pre-Broadway try-out but when that show folded on the road the records were never released.
The label was obviously struggling to master the techniques of translating shows from stage to records and they did not really succeed until the late 1950s.

4 out of 5 stars An Early but Memorable Lerner-Loewe Score.......2003-04-25

BRIGADOON failed in its 1947 Broadway debut. The 1954 screen version died a slow death at the box office. Significant revivals in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s lost money. And it is easy to see why: even by 1940s standards, the show is incredibly simpering in its tale of two hunters who happen across a village that appears only day every century. Even so, producers have been drawn to it again and again and again--and again it is easy to see why: the story may be distastefully sweet, but the music is wonderful.

The 1947 recording is very much of its era. Broadway musical recordings were then a very small niche market, and record companies were not interested in knocking themselves out to produce an album that would appeal only to the few; moreover, technology limitations forced significant cuts in the material that it might be released as a single album. The result is a murky-sounding recording of a truncated score. But still--

The music shines through the quality issues just as it shines through the syrupy show itself, a charming collection of Scottish-tinged ballads and bouncy ensemble pieces. And the vocals are quite as charming as the Lerner-Loewe music and lyrics, with Marion Bell's "Waitin' for My Dearie," Lee Sullivan's "Come to Me, Bend to Me," and Pamela Britton's "My Mother's Wedding Day" particularly well done. And although the score is truncated, it includes such classics and near classics as "Go Home With Bonnie Jean," "Heather on the Hill," "There But For You Go I," and the famous "Almost Like Being In Love."

This is a "must own" recording for Learner and Lowe fans who long to hear the original performers of the original production. Still, the content and quality issues will limit the recording's appeal to hardcore fans and theatre buffs. Recommended nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad...not bad at all.......2003-05-28

On this CD, the main disadvantage are the voices. The girl who dubbed the singing voice of Cyd Charisse is shockingly talented, but Gene Kelly's voice is, as always, flat and gray and incredibly boring to listen to, and while Gustafson has a very pleasant voice, he falls far short in his attempt to sound like an old-fashioned Gaelic tenor.

However, some music is so good that it can salvage any voice that sings it. Such is the music of Brigadoon. Musical highlights include...

The hymn-like, extraordinarily beautiful "In thy valley there'll be love"...

The rowdy, rousing "bachelor party" number, "Go home with bonnie Jean"...

"There but for you go I", a song so beautiful that even Gene Kelly's voice sounds lovely singing it...

The grim, sharp-edged "Harry Beaton" (which is, incidentally, the trademark number of my favorite character)...

"From this day on", which, I'm not ashamed to admit, made me sob uncontrollably the first time I heard it, and still makes me misty-eyed to this day...

"Brigadoon", I have always maintained, has the finest musical score Frederick Loewe ever came up with (though I also argue that "Camelot" far outstrips it lyrically). It is beautiful after the fashion of the old Presbyterian hymns of Scotland, and its emotional power in phenomenal, especially in its stunning opening chorus--

"Let the world grow cold around us,
Let the heavens cry above,
Brigadoon, Brigadoon,
In thy valley there'll be love!"

5 out of 5 stars Lerner and Loewe at their best!.......2002-10-24

BRIGADOON is one of the more important musicals by the legendary team of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe (whose more popular works are PAINT YOUR WAGON, MY FAIR LADY, GIGI, and CAMELOT and of course, BRIGADOON). It is a musical fantasy about two Americans who stumble across a Scottish town that appears for only one day every hundred years (for the rest, you'll just have to see the play or the movie). It opened on Broadway in 1947 (the other hit musical that season was the longer-running but more quickly dated FINIAN'S RAINBOW, which was also a fantasy). In 1954 BRIGADOON went to Hollywood and M-G-M. It starred Gene Kelly, Van Johnson, and Cyd Charisse. The movie version is different from the Broadway play in that quite a bit of music from the score was discarded to add more focus on the dancing abilities of the film's stars. On the plus side, though, this soundtrack album features most of the music that was cut, all in stereo. All of the important songs are included on this CD, as well as much underscoring and dance music. The stereophonic sound quality is great. And along with the Original Broadway Cast recording, this is the best Brigadoon out there!

5 out of 5 stars A great CD full of Beautiful music!.......2001-09-15

If you like the movie "Brigadoon", then your really like the soundtrack as well. There are some songs included in it that aren't in the movie, and well as a little booklet about the film.
I'd give it more stars if I could. The songs are all very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A great look into what could have been.......2000-12-13

This soundtrack restores many numbers which never made it into the final film version. Listening to it makes me long for a new version of the film with the cut scenes restored. That'll never happen, but I can dream. Fortunately I did get the visual elements of "From This Day On" following a broadcast of this film on Turner Classic Movies. What should have been a great song and dance film is instead a nice dance film with songs. The orchestrations are lush and provide a very soothing listening experience and the CDs sound quality is flawless. We'll never see the full film, but we are fortunate enough to have this wonderful soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get these songs out of my mind.......2000-06-20

I picked up this recording on a whim, and now I can't put it down! Among the most pleasant surprises are songs such as "There But for You Go I" (which I'm rather surprised didn't ever become a wedding "favorite" as its lyrics would be very appropriate -- and a nice change from "Sunrise/Sunset!") and "From this Day On" that were cut prior to the movie's release: What on earth were the powers-that-be at M-G-M thinking? Guess we'll never know but thank goodness someone had enough sense to save these precious recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Showtime!.......2007-05-27

Terfel has an outstanding voice & the talent to use it to good advantage. Being 'show buffs' we thoughly enjoyed the selection of numbers also.

4 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-25

A quote from the accompanying booklet: "Some people might claim that there is no difference between classical and popular music, only between good and bad. Maybe so, but how many singers can put over and all-Schubert recital and a CD of show tunes like 'If Ever I Would Leave You' with equal authority and ease? At this point, probably none but Bryn Terfel." OH, WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!! Many classical singers have accomplished that very task with just as much skill as Terfel. Don't get me wrong here;he has a great voice, but just as I do not want to hear Frank Sinatra sing Monteverdi, I would rather hear Robert Goulet sing Lerner & Loewe. And permit me to cite at least one example of a cross-over: Ian Bostridge, classical British tenor did an album of Noel Coward Songs(Coward , the British Broadway equivalent), which are excellent, but I want to hear him singing Schubert, just as I might prefer Terfel singing Mozart. Having said all of this, it's a well-done disc; song selection is good, and I bought it, but truthfully I don't play it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel in musical theatre-mode.......2006-10-20

It is very hard for an opera singer to suddenly shift their singing talents in another direction (remember the Kiri Te Kanawa "South Pacific" album?), but Bryn Terfel gamely rises to the challenge with an album of songs from the musical theatre team of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe ("My Fair Lady", "Camelot").

On the whole, the album is quite enjoyable, and Terfel performs the usual standards like "If Ever I Would Leave You" and "On the Street Where You Live". Happily, the album also features two numbers from the underrated "Little Prince" score ("I Never Met a Rose" and the Title Song); as well as "There's Always One You Can't Forget" (from the big flop "Dance a Little Closer").

Terfel also gets to perform some of the ladies' numbers like "Hurry! It's Lovely Up Here" (from "On a Clear Day..."). Terfel is the closest thing we have to the old-fashioned matinee idol, and the selections on this album are well-suited to his lush voice. Quite a surprise.

4 out of 5 stars For crossover, very good.......2001-02-25

I usually hate the crossover genre, because the material almost always ends up overdone and not at all true to the idiom and mood of the original. That said, Terfel on this disc is about as good as crossover can get, using his fine voice to render pretty convincing and powerful versions of a number of Broadway classics. While he occasionally goes over the top, he is pretty faithful to the songs, and on those numbers that call for a rousing rendition (They Call the Wind Maria, for example), he really is splendid. Great sound quality and fine orchestral accompaniments.

5 out of 5 stars Terfel's interpretation of showtunes quite appropriate!.......2000-08-22

Terfel's interpretations of Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musicals is a nice alternative to the partiality that an opera singer has to their own genre of music. Terfel, I feel, knew that he could justify his decision to make a recording of show tunes, especially after the completion of G.&S. light opera pieces. I have always held clasically trained singers with esteem and have always apreciated there interpretations of various types of music. Show tunes are an easy bridge for the clasically trained such as Terfel. Yet, as Terfel proves, his voice tends to be a little to strident(in a good way)or strong, in many cases, for a particular passage. For example, the whole song "They Call the Wind Maria" from Paint Your Wagon is way to strong and quite formidable for the ears to stand, yet the opening note from like a fiddle is very light and nastalgic (on- the-range style) motif, yet once Terfel belts out the note, one feels he is a rough and way too tough cowboy who is supposed to be "on the lone prairy." Also, in the song "On the Street Where You Live," one of my all-time favorites, Terfel is enclined to approach the song with a rather strong dose of enthusiasm and playfulness, whereas I feel that the song should be approached with an inner light of emotions that luminate from within the singer that is interpreted as a warmth and passionate inner secret that the lister will agree with, and appreciate as if they are also sharing the secret of a lover who is smitten/infatuated with this "someone" "On The Street Where You Live." NOW...WITH GETTING ALL OF THE COMMENTS OUT...I can reflect on the nature of Terfel and his voice and how this recording is an incredible piece. First of all, I love to hear songs sung in a full voice with a tone with a forward resonance and brilliance that only a artist clasically trained like an opera singer can achieve. Their voices are unmatched in sound and technique, thus furthering the richness of a song otherwise song by a standard singer who might show all the emotions yet the inability to convey their music without a micropone. I wish not to be to brash, for I love broadway singers like Anthony Warlow, for his voice, I believe is exceptional, yet even more like Audra MacDonald. Why? for she has proven to cross over and sing operatic pieces with alacrity. For Bryn Terfel, these songs are easy and playful to execute, yet this does not mean he slacks on the energy needed to support a sound that he is familiar with in operatic arenas. Yet the possible taxing tones need for opera can be exempt here as they are, yet the good habits of a classically trained singer such as word elucution/diction and constant support add a hightened relief to rather standard showtunes, that can be heard half hummed and then easily dismissed by the lister on most occasions to such songs. Yet, if You buy this recording you will not be so enclined to dissmiss these songs that you thought you heard too much, for you will marvel at how an opera singer can transcend the mundane interpretations of musical theater's usual acts, and let a truly mastered voice soar over and orchestra without a sign of straining, producing beatuful full sounds exploding with emotions in a unique, truly intensifying way. these songs will leave an indelibe mark in your mind...yet only if you buy it!

Unless you have a sentimental attachment to the familiar voices of the original Broadway cast or movie soundtrack, the 1957 studio recording of Brigadoon might just become your favorite. It's exceptionally well cast, for starters, especially the great Jack Cassidy as the romantic lead Tommy and the woefully underrecorded powerhouse Susan Johnson as the brassy Meg. Singing sweetly opposite Cassidy is his then-wife Shirley Jones (their children included Shaun Cassidy; David was from Jack's previous marriage), fresh off her lead ingenue roles in the Oklahoma! and Carousel films, and sometimes-opera-singer Frank Poretta covers the high-tenor songs "I'll Go Home with Bonnie Jean" and "Come to Me, Bend to Me." Producer Goddard Lieberson also included choral and dance numbers to showcase more of the Lerner & Loewe score (45 minutes) than had been recorded before. Modern collectors have choices, however, and the best overall option might be John McGlinn's 1991 recording, which has even more music and is also very well sung, by Rebecca Luker and Brent Barrett. But if one has the shelf space for more than one Brigadoon, the 1957 cast is so good that it's worth picking up. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars The Best Performance for Brigadoon.......2007-03-08

I played the role of Meg Brockie in college so am very familiar with this show. This is much much much better than the movie version cd.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE FOR MUSICAL THEATER FANS . . . . . .......2006-09-27

There's little to add to the already fine comments made about this recording. It's been one of my favorites for years, and I shamelessly tried to model my singing after Frank Porretta's when I played Charlie Dalrymple back in 1958 at Kearney State College. Loads of appreciation to DRG for this CD release and a masterful remastering job. Shirley Jones is a perfect Fiona and Jack Cassidy is in excellent voice as Tommy. However, it is in the two supporting roles that this recording rises above all others: Frank Porretta's "Come to Me, Bend to Me" and "I'll Go Home to Bonnie Jean" have never been bettered, and Susan Johnson is far and away the best Meg Brockie ever recorded. In fact, her versions of "The Love of My Life" and "My Mother's Wedding Day" alone are enough reason to purchase this recording.

This said, I also want to recommend highly the 1992 Broadway Angel studio recording. It has the advantage of excellent stereo sound and a very fine Tommy Albright in Brent Barrett. Clocking in at 79 minutes & 10 seconds, it contains considerably more dialogue than the DRG recording, and all the incidental & dance music, including a truly moving "Funeral Dance" for bagpipes and drums. The Angel album is so good that it belongs in every musical theater fan's collection, along with DRG's reissue of Columbia's Goddard Lieberson-produced, Lehman Engel-conducted studio recording.

Highly recommended

PS. Miss Johnson also appeared in 1958's OH, CAPTAIN! - available as a DRG CD - as well as DONNYBROOK (1961) & WHOOP-UP (1958), both missing from the DECCA Broadway catalogue. A shanda! Frank Porretta can be heard on the DRG release of THE GREAT WALTZ (1965), and hopefully DECCA Broadway will see fit to issue a CD version of THE SONG OF NORWAY soundtrack (1970) starring Mr. Porretta and Florence Henderson.

Keep sending those e-mails!

5 out of 5 stars A BETTER BRIGDOON COULDN'T EXIST.......2006-05-14

At 17 having just seen OKLAHOMA!, I was in love with Shirley Jones. I purchased this recording because of her and became familiar with the Brigadoon score for the first time. It will always be my favorite. I hadn't listened to it for years, but with the new CD release, just listened again. I had forgotten, or not realized what amazing performances were there. Jones and Cassidy have never been in better voice, both artistically and dramatically, and the rest of the cast just excellent. Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars almost near-perfect BRIGADOON.......2005-06-26

Columbia's 1957 studio cast album of BRIGADOON remains to this day one of the best (if not THE best) recordings of the dreamy Lerner-Loewe score.

This was originally one in a series of Broadway studio cast albums, produced by Goddard Lieberson, many of which have been released on CD (including GIRL CRAZY (Mary Martin, Louise Carlyle); OH KAY! (Barbara Ruick, Jack Cassidy); and BABES IN ARMS (Mary Martin, Jack Cassidy).

Shirley Jones is a revelation as Fiona with Jack Cassidy as Tommy. The performances are enlivened no end by their real-life chemistry as husband and wife, and they used that kinship to great effect in their recordings together. Jones' rendition of "Waitin' for My Dearie" includes the right combination of melancholy and hope. Jack Cassidy has a ball with "There But for You Go I".

Susan Johnson replaced Pamela Britton on Broadway during the run of the original production, and she beautifully recreates the role of soubrette Meg Brockie. A spirited reading of "The Love of My Life" is a highlight of the entire recording.

There are many delightful BRIGADOON's around (I own a copy of the Armstrong television cast recording on LP, which features the once-in-a-lifetime casting of Sally Ann Howes and Robert Goulet in the roles of Fiona and Tommy), nevertheless, the Shirley Jones/Jack Cassidy BRIGADOON will always be my favourite rendition of the score.

4 out of 5 stars This Studio Cast Recording is in MONO?-What's up with that?.......2005-04-13

For many years this recording of BRIGADOON (1957) was the definitive version out there, but in 1991 Angel/emi released what has now become the complete version to have. After 1956 columbia records started recording everything in STEREO ( this doesn't mean that everything was released after that however at that time). It's amazing to me that this wonderful recording was not done in stereo but in MONO. A few years later this recording would be electronically re-channled for stereo but still sounded mono. This new DRG remaster is wonderful in terms of it's sound and I'm so thrilled it's finally available at long last. Thank you DRG and Dan O'leary for your dedication and hard work in bringing these recordings back into print again. Michael Sherman

5 out of 5 stars Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

5 out of 5 stars A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful album.......2005-04-23

Ron Raines does a fabulous job singing broadway songs. His voice is truly fantastic. He has a perfect voice for broadway songs and ballads. I think the song selection he chose is really wonderful and a great variety from different musicals. His first album was fantastic and so is this one. I'd highly recommend both albums. His voice is truly wonderful and a beautiful experience to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Ron Raines Continues His Beautiful singing.......2005-04-01

This is the second in Ron Raines series of Broadway Classics. It is just as beautiful as his first one. Close your eyes when you listen to him and you will believe that you are in a theater. You won't be disappointed if you like Broadway! The more I listen to Ron Raines sing, the better I like him. I hope he will make a new CD soon. He sings the songs that men sing in the original Broadway shows. It is great! This singer should be in everyone who likes music's collection
