Grieg: Lyric Pieces / Emil Gilels
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Emil Gilels' personal selection of favorite lyric pieces is one of his most praised and best recordings. The pianist obviously selected the pieces with which he felt the strongest identification, and he plays them lovingly, with sprightly rhythms and a rich, singing tone. Gilels was the one who identified himself as second to Sviatoslav Richter--"If you think I'm something, wait until you hear Richter," he supposedly said. But this collection is just as beautiful in its way as Richter's lyric collections. Along with some of his Chopin playing, this Grieg set reminds us that Gilels was a major Romantic pianist. --Leslie Gerber

Superb historical achievement!.......2006-04-27
Emil Gilels temperament has always been at least to my mind extremely cold and even analytical. His powerful phrasing is first rate, who can deny it? .
However, he recorded for the posterity two emblematic works; this album and Brahms Piano Quartet Op. 25 with Amadeus Quartet(see my review).
Gilels was at top form that historical evening with these Grieg pieces. This miniaurist composer deads from the player a sensitive imagination as well as a warm approach to win. Gilels made it and so he achieved one of his three best recordings in his life.
So please do not miss this album.
Restoration .......2005-07-26
It is so good to hear this recording again! Many years ago, I owned this recording, on vinyl, of Emil Gilels playing selections from Grieg's Lyric Pieces. I've recently just got around to restoring it to my collection. It is a most beautiful recording of some of the most beautiful compositions for piano. Gilel's playing is gorgeous. What a pleasure it is to hear again!
If you want to hear some beautiful music played by a legend of the piano, buy this disc

Grieg's Lyric pieces are miniature jewels and they are well played by Gilels.I wish to recommend the complete set of Grieg's piano works on the Naxos label by Einar Stein Nokleberg which outclasses Gilels both in recording quality as well as in performance.Nokleberg is excellent and consistent throughout playing with incredible sensitivity.Especially the Lyric pieces (Vol 8 -vol 10)is played with poetic flair and rock steady rhythm.Great Piano Playing.A must Buy for all Grieg Lovers.
musicianship defined.......2005-04-17
The surpassing piano art of Emil Gilels keeps these Grieg miniatures free of sentimentality. Relying on lustrous tone, humor and breathtaking musical intelligence, Gilels sets an imcomparable standard wisely highlighted by chronological programming of his choices. The quizzical beauty of small music requires urgent musicianship of both composer and performer, something that defines this CD. I play it every chance I get. Gilels' playing is one of the wonders of the world; I'll always wish he'd recorded more repertory than he did. Thankfully we have this, his Mozart and especially his Ravel. Hard to be disappointed with a CD this fine.
Pure musical indulgence.......2004-11-10
Gilels brings richness to Grieg's short, but texturally satisfying lyric pieces that will not disappoint accomplished musicians or lovers of romantic piano music. Right at the start, he reaches out and caresses your emotions with his delicate but confident artistry in the Arietta, leaving you with a sense of peaceful longing when the ending ritardando comes too soon. My only disappointment in the overall CD quality was that the dynamic range seems slightly, and possibly artificially high, requiring periodic volume adjustment in order to preserve the optimum quality and enjoyment of the sound.

Just say no to AMSI (AMbient Sound Imaging).......2007-03-23
Not sure what led Deutsche Grammophon/Universal to use AMSI (AMbient Sound Imaging), a kind of simulated "surround". To use an analogy, it's like colorizing a good B/W film. The use of AMSI was one of the WORST mistakes DG/Universal has ever made in terms of sound engineering. The stereo image completely loses focus via this "technology". This is especially bad news for EARLY DIGITAL RECORDINGS, which lack "focus" and imaging to begin with. AMSI does not make the recording sound better. Too bad -- the track selection chosen for Fur Elise is quite good.
Sorry I don't agree..........2004-10-17
This is a good collection of pieces - would've been great had better Chopin been selected, like "Heroic". The perfomances are all well executed. However, the BIG problem, as with many piano recordings, is the recording level. On three different stereos, to hear the softest parts, the volume has to be turned up to such a level that A) hissing is an issue and B) the crescendoes BLAST and crack the speakers. The price is right, though...
Lovely.......2002-06-23
I am enjoying this album tremendously. My mother used to practice the piano while I was drifting off to sleep on occasional summer nights. I am looking for something to recreate that peace for my own children (failing to have mastered the instrument myself). Listening to this album just fills me with those same warm fuzzies; I love this music. The choice of pieces is wonderful and the playing lovely. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I!
The title should have been "The Best Ofý".......2001-08-25
You have heard them all before. Well, not maybe all on the piano. I am not usually fond of other people's selections as they always leave out something (Ex. Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto.) However I will have to make this the exception. This is a superior collection of similar "Romantic Piano Pieces." I also cringe at "et al"; once again the "et al" was a good selection. Even if you have the originals this will make an addition.
For a great time.......2001-06-18
Put you right in to the great mood of relaxation. I recommend this piece of art to anyone who knows what classical music is because this is what they have been looking for. A must have CD.

Gilels is one of the best.......2005-03-06
Back in the good old days, when pianists (from Godowsky, Rachmaninoff, Moisewitsch, Hofmann, and Lhevinne to Horowitz, Richter, and Rubinstein) worshipped in the temples of musicality, pianoplaying was in its golden age. And with the deaths of the Three Great Masters (Horowitz, Arrau, and Serkin), things fell apart. That was primarily because teachers and scholars began to urge pupils to play like robots; practicing until the student could play in their sleep, trying not to hit a single wrong note, and spending hours on mere technical exercises. And surely enough, pianism was reprsented by a mob of robots. With two great exceptions in Pollini and Kissin (they are the only ones managing to keep the legacies of Schnabel and Gilels alive), pianists soon forgot the meaning of emotion and sentiment in their interpretations, choosing to focus on pure technique instead. And yet not a single pianist has even come close to compare with the technique of a Backhaus, Cziffra, Horowitz, or even a Cortot. One may listen to some recordings by Kapell (such as the Chopin Nocturne, op.9, no.1) Gilels (among many, the recording of the two Chopin Sonatas found in this compilation), Arrau (Liszt's Vallee d'Obermann), Rachmaninoff (the Man Lebt nur Einmal transcription by Tausig), and find themselves swept-over by these pianists' stupendous performances, performances that have largely vanished from the face of the Earth. Will there be a pianist, someday, who will lead the piano like a Franz Liszt into a new age of glory? I sincerely hope so.
Genius in the Act of Creation.......2002-01-16
The selections on the final volumes of Emil Gilels' entries in the Great Pianists of the 20th Century series are justifiedly famous. My impression, after my first listening, was that these performances: the Brahms 2d, the two Chopin sonatas-didn't sound like other recordings of the pieces I had in my collection (Rubenstein; Szell/Serkin). After subsequent listenings, however, I realized that Gilels' rendition of all of these works are simply acts of interpretive genius.
There is a dispute among the other reviewers of this set as to whether occasional wrong notes diminish the value of these performances. My vote is a resounding "No! Listening to Gilels here (oftentimes in "live" recording) is to hear Genius in the act of creation. Sometimes creation can be messy and rarely is it note perfect. However, this is playing to inspire awe and Gilels is part mad chemist and part thoroughbred, striding through performance with strength, speed and grace. It just doesn't get better than this.
Music- not Notes.......2001-12-23
This complete misconception that missed notes is a sign of nerves or lack of practice is entirely false. Modern preformers are expected to be note perfect without fail, and quite frankly, it's completely amusical. Because there's no way at all to hit every last note right AND play an extremely expressive preformance- it's on or the other I think. It simply takes too much effort to devote that kind of attention to the notes. All the old school musicians, Horowitz, Richter, Fitz-Kriesler, Menuhin, Rachmoninov all made mistakes on recordings! Big ones too! But it didn't matter, and THEY didn't care. Because they'd rather make music than play notes. And there wasn't this inhuman expectation that all the notes be %100 with out a single fault while preforming in front of thousands of people putting your whole career on the line.
The best recording I have is Menuhin playing the bach sonatas and partitas. And he misses shifts! Flat out misses them and is distinctly out of tune. But it doesn't matter, because it's a small price to pay because he, instead of jsut placing the NOTE where it should be, he went for it and made music and just blindly jumped for the note. 9 times out 10 he hits it, but since hes human he misses sometimes. Oh well.
Besides, the point of music is to connect, and to have a human to human experiance. With all this perfection note perfect bull, the audience is completely removed from the preformer. They look up to him or her and the preformer looks down on the audience. "I'm listening to you only because I can't do it myself" is the modern attitude of music, and it is quite disconcerting. Music should be "He has something to say, he has a message that I can relate to, he's just like me"
Of course a sloppy preformance can be horrible- but sloppyness of understanding is different than sloppyness of a few cracks here and there.
You call it risk-taking; I call it sloppy playing.......2001-03-16
Why is it that whenever an Amazon.com reviewer wants to excuse a pianist's clunkers, he or she insists that the player misses notes because he (or she) is "taking risks"? (Of course he's taking risks--the first one being to step out onto that stage in front of a huge audience! Rather nervous-making, I'd guess.) Yes, Gilels is a wonderful pianist; you'd have to be deaf not to believe that; and I strongly recommend the Brahms and the Grieg, but the guy does miss notes, especially in live concert recordings, and it's most disconcerting. Please prove to me that these slips are the result of risk-taking! I've heard any number of great pianists in concert--Rubinstein, Glenn Gould, Krystian Zimerman, Argerich and Kissin, just for example--and I didn't hear missed notes from them. So, may I gently suggest that Mr. Gilels just needed to practice a bit more, or perhaps needed a little something to calm his nerves? And may I urge other reviewers to stop using this silly bit of special pleading for their favorites? Thank you.

Anything that starts off with Shura Cherkassky's delicious account of a Tango by Albéniz has got to have something going for it, and this set seems to score over and over again. It's an interesting piece of programming, since having got off to a Spanish start, we are led through Bach (traditionally the starter), Balakirev (his famously unplayable Islamey thrown off coolly by Julius Katchen), Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Gershwin, Gottschalk, Granados, Grieg, and Handel. One thing they certainly all have in common is the passion of the title, and they are well served by our guides, who include Tureck, Kempff, Kocsis, Lill, Barenboim, Argerich, Michelangeli, De Larrocha, Gilels, and Gavrilov. It is worth mentioning so many, since these are top names in their respective fields and it gives an indication of what you can expect from this set. And while you would rightly expect veteran Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha to give us the full treatment in Albéniz and Granados, listen to her delightful piece of Handel, which concludes the set. Recordings range in time from 1955 to 1998, and the freshness of the playing transcends changes in recording technology during those years. --Keith Clarke
Customer Reviews:
Great Classical Piano.......2005-08-04
I picked up this CD because it had some of my favorite piano pieces of Bach, Brahms and Bartok on it.
The renditions on these discs are terrific. And every single selection is really worth listening to- this is some of the best classical piano out there. If you're like me and aren't really concerned about owning the complete Bach, Brahms, Chopin, etc, this is the disc to pick up for a good sampling of it all.
And it's a good value too. Two discs for the price of one!
