A New Brain (1998 Original Cast) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
William Finn is an acquired taste. Not only is this lyricist-composer one of the few proponents of the (mostly) sung-through musical, but he favors unlikely subjects. His 1992 musical Falsettos was about love, a bar mitzvah, AIDS, and mortality; A New Brain deals with a brain tumor and art and, yes, mortality and love. Both witty and touching, the show displays Finn's melodic gift and his talent for suggesting sentiment without sentimentality. The supporting cast, including Chip Zien, Kristin Chenoweth, and Penny Fuller, is a collection of New York's finest stage actors, each of whom gets at least one splendid song. In the lead, Malcolm Gets allows the listener direct access into Gordon Schwinn's innermost emotions. An acquired taste, yes, but one that will linger in your memory and heart. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
USA Today
It contains some of Finn's best, wittiest and most darkly comic work--aside from some lapses in the lyrics department that are more glaringly apparent on disc. Performances are almost consistently knockouts ... especially Malcolm Gets, who gives a charismatic, diction-perfect, dryly witty account of the brain-afflicted main character.

Hundreds of compilation recordings have been thrust on the market in recent years on the theory that classical music makes a nice, non-threatening accompaniment to everything from working out to making love. And here we have one compilation promising to make your baby smarter. It's offensive enough that the music featured on these compilations is spliced up so that the most you hear of any work is a single movement; what's really annoying is the poor quality of so many of the featured performances. So it is some consolation that the artists here include such 20th-century legends as the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell and the Budapest String Quartet with Mieczyslaw Horszowski. Of course if these folks were alive, one can imagine their violent objection to this presentation of their work. --Gwendolyn Freed

Build Baby's Brain through Classics Vol 1.......2006-07-25
I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though, and purchased a used set for my Grandson.
Wonderful stimulating music for baby.......2006-06-23
I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start.
Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational stimulation of a young mind is a powerful indicator that the child will be more advanced than the average child.
Music is not just notes played. Music--real music--is everything. Though the music of today will fade, classical music will always be around because it is classic. It fits no matter what era you place it in. There is always a home for it. The artists are timeless just as the beautiful melodies are.
I certainly believe that babies who listen to music will become more familiar with and more easily understand music and instruments. Therefore, they will be quicker of mind. It is just a fact that people who play instruments are usually of higher intelligence.
I don't think that people are destined to be stupid or geniuses. I believe it is a question of environment. I feel I'm a great mother but I haven't done everything I could have been doing to help my son's mind expand as an infant. Now that he is a toddler (18 months) I am teaching him to read and exposing him to the magic of classical music in hopes that it will help mold him and set him apart from the rest.
Minds are trainable. You just have to work at it. This CD compiled of beautiful pieces composed by instrumental geniuses will help you do just that.
The greatest CD!!.......2006-01-17
I received this CD free when I had my first baby and it instantly became my fav cd of all time. I have it on my computer and I had another copy made because I just can not imagine not having it.
And as for the comment that the music has nothing to do with intellingence, you stand alone on that front. Besides, what does it hurt? It's great, soothing music and the babies enjoy it.
Forget baby, it's mine?.......2005-09-01
I love my child, but the first time I heard this CD, It immediately went from her recorder to mine. I take it practically everywhere I go. I know it's technically "Her" CD, but the selections are so soothing; and you need that type of comfort when stuck in traffic. Honestly, we both enjoy it - and I'm glad someone thought enough to give it as a gift.
Love this CD--why all the complaints?.......2004-08-30
I'm not sure what people were expecting when they purchased this. For one thing it tells you exactly what is on the CD. Its not a mystery!! If you buy it on amazon it has listed every title on it so I"m not sure about the people who said they were dissapointed because they already own those titles. Obviously you should glance at the list of titles on this CD if you have a large classical collection already. However if you don't already have a classical collection this is by far excellent .I'll be honest and admit I listen to one of the volumes daily regardless of who is in the room. It's marketed for babies but it is really for anyone. There are SO many classical pieces out there. What they have done is to take the best of the best and also the ones that are known to appeal to babies. For some reason many reviewers thing they just took a random sampling of classical music. In reality they have put together those that appeal most to children. I can tell you that my 1 year old daughter actually dances to these. She really likes them a lot. I consider the whole collection a must have for any household.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing........2007-04-08
A New Brain is amazing. If you like only musicals of the Oklahoma! or Phantom of the Opera varities, this show may not be for you. But it literally saved my sanity.
I'm a Broadway nerd who had a year-long health crisis, and I bought this soundtrack because I'd heard it was set in the middle of someone else's crisis. It's brilliant. First, "And They're Off," has to be one of the best Broadway songs I've ever heard--it's this amazing combination of Menken (from Little Shop...) and lyrics that would make Sondheim proud...or even a little jealous. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think I can hear the beat of the MRI machine behind "Sitting Becalmed in the Lee of Cuttyhunk,"...that's so different and cool.
I can hear a little bit of formula in the show--"Heart and Music" reminds me of "Welcome to Falsettoland," "Brain Dead" is reminscent of "The Chess Game," from March. There are other similarities too--you'll hear strains of "Anytime" from Elegies near the end (which, I believe, was originally cut from this show). But this show is far from formulaic--"Gordo's Law of Genetics," "Poor, Unsuccessful and Fat" and "Yes," are laugh-out-loud funny. "Sailing" is a gorgeous ballad that I'd like to hear more men sing in auditions...and then there's "Eating Myself Up Alive," which is, simply put, amazing.
Finn fans will love it--Sondheim purists might, too. I know I do.
Buy this cd........2007-01-19
I loved this show when I saw it - and I was reminded of just how much when I pulled out the cd again recently. This is an incredibly strong score, beautifully performed.
Norm Lewis breaks my heart. Penny Fuller is a goddess. Mary Testa is a gift from heaven.
This show is a joy.
Haunting melodies, great cast.......2005-09-09
I really love this piece! My only complaint is Kristen Chenowyth is underutilized, but other than that, some really great songs. "Heart and Music," "I Feel So Much Spring Within Me," and "Gordon's Law of Genetics" (really fun) are all great. My favorite, however, is "And They're Off." Amazing!
I wake up with a song from this musical in my head almost every morning. I haven't listened to it since last weekend, but today (5 days later), I awoke with Kristen singing "I love Mr. Bungee" in my head. It makes waking up early a lot easier!
Thank you, William Finn, for another wonderful musical that makes being a theatre fan so worth it!! I hope I'm able to see a production of this piece one day...
You may need a new Brain after listening to this.......2005-05-27
While listening to this, you'll be a little (okay, a LOT) hesitant at first. BUT! It is great. Once you've heard Will Finn's music, you will be changed. Creative, darkly humerous, just corny enough to not scare you off. Think of music from a basic book musical mixed lyrics from something like Avanue Q. It's a great combination and a HIT!
"Poor, unsuccessful and fat... and getting older..".......2004-07-29
I had the very great honor of being cast as Richard, the Nice Nurse in my university's production of this show. Not only was I in love with this show's soundtrack, I was given the honor of singing my favorite song, "Eating Myself Up Alive". The show is beautiful and awe-inspiring, with a dash of Broadway star-power and wicked humor.
William Finn has crafted the surreal yet very realistic world surrounding him during a life-threatening brain condition. After miraculously surviving, he claims that he just couldn't stop writing.
Malcom Gets heads this show off as the main character, a sarcastic jerk named Gordon Schwinn. His performance is strong, and leaves nothing to be desired. In fact, the entire cast is sharp and create memorable, fun characters. Penny Fuller, Chip Zien, Michael Mandell and the lovely Kristen Chenoweth make this a musical filled with gorgeous songs that will have you humming for weeks on end. If you get an opportunity to see this show, don't pass it up. This is a sharp, fantastic musical. Don't miss "Sailing", "Gordo's Law of Genetics", "An Invitation to Sleep In My Arms", "Eating Myself Up Alive" or "Time and Music". Perhaps the only hang up in the album is the overrated theme of the show, "Heart and Music" which is a bit corny, and definitely feels a little hollow. Otherwise, you're in for a treat.

The healing vibrations of this harp music will make you feel as though you've had a brain massage! The cells of your body as well as your ears respond to music. The invisible energy of the harp, which is one of the oldest known musical instruments used for healing, can change the electrical activity of the brain. The selections on this album are a mixture of classical, popular, new age, religious and improvisation, all weaving together to achieve the positive vibrations for achieving peace and healing.
Customer Reviews:
Tranquility.......2006-05-30
These well known pieces take my mind to a place of tranquility and relaxation. The healing resonance of the harp eliminates the stress of the day.
Simple tunes warrant a different title.......2005-05-15
The title of this CD is quite misleading. The collection of simple tunes played by Ms. Fletcher is not by far as interesting as "Healing..." implies. For some people this music may very well be a source of relaxation, I find it a far cry from what reviews and synposis suggest.
STRESS RELIEF.......2004-10-30
THIS IS A GREAT PIECE TO LISTEN TO WHEN OVER-STRESSED. HELPS TO CALM ME DOWN AND GETS ME BACK ON TRACK WITH MY LIFE. MAKES ME FEEL AS IF I HAVE HAD A ONE HOUR MASSAGE.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

Album Description
More marches, waltzes, and fox trots in this recording of the New Verbeeck Band Organ at Seabreeze Park in Upstate New York. On a hill above scenic Lake Ontario, the music of the band organ can be heard on the breezes drifting over the blue water. Twenty-three tunes bring back the sounds of summer from Seabreeze Park - the whirling carousel and prancing horses spin around to the music of childhood, and this fabulous recording captures the wonderful memories. Grab the popcorn, and come for a ride! This completely digital recording is crystal clear and an oversized insert includes pictures and fond memories of Merrick Price - to whom the album is dedicated. The last song was recorded on the carousel while it was moving - an innovative idea that captures the sensation of really being on the ride is enhanced by wearing headphones. This piece of Americana in music - a must for the audio collector, carousel enthusiast, or fan of mechanical music, is a one-of-a-kind gift item.

carousel.......2007-01-03
Carousel Memories does not have the luster that I had expected. The music is not as clear as I would have liked, however, it does have some good qualities that make it worth while to listen.
The Ideal Merry-Go-Round.......2005-07-18
This is a recording by and for merry-go-round lovers. It assembles 23 tracks of mostly characteristic carousel music, played upon a newly constructed band organ handmade by Belgian Johnny Verbeeck to replicate the old Wurlitzer 165 destroyed by a fire around 1995. The fire also claimed most of the carousel itself, which was rebuilt using some restored parts from the original (PTC#36). The recording site is Seabreeze Park on Lake Ontario in upper New York.
In another review I mentioned that that CD offered a partial and rather idealized carousel experience, for it could only provide the sound, and that sound was much more refined and free of ambient noise than would be encountered during an actual carousel ride. That comment applies as well to this recording, and perhaps more so, for the band organ in a typical operating carousel never sounded so good as the one here. This instrument has a remarkably lovely, sweet tone and, being brand new, is in perfect condition. The rolls used were obtained from no less a source than the Library of Congress, and represent a very choice selection.
The music itself includes mostly waltzes, marches, polkas, and one-time popular songs, such as Beer Barrel Polka, Sweet Rosie O'Grady, Liberty Bell, and Scatter-Brain. Less to be expected, but supremely apt, is the fine waltz from Richard Rodger's overture to the musical show Carousel. This last was experimentally recorded on the moving carousel, and thus provides an especially realistic auditory image.
For merry-go-round and band organ enthusiasts this recording might well occupy a place of honor in their CD collection. For those who desire a more realistic, though less ideal, recording I would recommend the old 1973 Takoma Records release "Last Chance on the Merry-Go-Round" (# A 1038), which I believe is no longer in the catalog. (Takoma Records was acquired in 1995 by Fantasy Records.) My personal copy of A 1038 is an LP, and I suspect no CD version was ever released. That recording was made at the carousel on the pier at Santa Monica, California, shortly before the pier was to be demolished. (Thus the title of the recording.) Since it was made while the carousel was actually in operation, the sounds of bystanders and children, along with the carousel drive motor are included. I don't know what ever became of that carousel or its band organ, but would guess they were moved to some collection somewhere. In any case, I have fond memories of wandering along the pier on a fine Saturday afternoon and watching and listening to the carousel and its excited young customers.

The thesis that a child's brain can grow from listening to music is inarguable. The science is somewhat simple: for kids hearing music, the real meal of the sound is its connections and structures, both of which teach the brain how to organize phenomena. Johann Sebastian Bach's music is a stunning study in this regard, thanks at certain points to his keenly built, pristinely laid out musical architecture and at other times to the mix of intricate detail and delicate gloss. With this collection, drawn from Columbia Records' vast vaults, you get the best of the gentle scenarios, beginning with "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and extending to E. Powers Biggs's breathy organ on "Be Thou Art Near." Firecrackers pop a little more cracklingly as Lutz Kirchhof performs a pair of lute suites and Anthony Newman takes on a pair of the famed Goldberg Variations on harpsichord. At its most upbeat, this collection is still reserved and cautious, exciting enough to grab attention but not so much that the music takes over as its own isolated activity. It's strong but still fits nicely into one's routine. And even if a segment on this 78-minute disc isn't to your child's liking, it's easy to move on, as most episodes last less than 3 minutes. --Andrew Bartlett

...WE SLAM DANCED TO A ROCKIN' BAND!!!!!!.......2006-01-16
Definately in MY top five RAMONE picks. BRAIN DRAIN was the last album to officially include member DEE DEE RAMONE on bass, and perhaps has some of his best licks. This bit was released in 1989 and was the first album on the Chrysalis label.
During the eighties THE RAMONES became more of a rock and roll outfit when it came to studio recordings. You get louder guitars, and a richer sound than you will hear on the classic seventies punk recordings of the band. The best songs on this disc are DEE DEE compositions, the opening I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES is a very cool rocker. PET SEMETARY also a rockin' song. DEE DEE had a hell of a lot of problems, but the man could pen a great song. Hell, he even wrote most of the songs for the band AFTER he left for the next few albums. However, BRAIN DRAIN is his swan song. The same year he would also release a solo album of rap songs- I have never found that piece, but I would really like to! HA HA!
BRAIN DRAIN also features lots of other great songs like DONT BUST MY CHOPS and JOEY RAMONE favorites CAN'T GET YOU OUTTA MY MIND and MERRY CHRISTMAS (I DONT WANNA FIGHT TONIGHT). Then the icing on the cake is a sweet sweet cover of Gong Show ChucK Barris' PALISADES PARK which really cooks. Take a ride on the Shoop-de-shoop! DIG THIS ALBUM! One of THE RAMONES best for sure!
Utter Brilliance.......2005-08-16
Any Ramones song, album, book or movie is good no matter what. The Ramones were the best band of all time, this is a fact not an opinion. The dead members of the Ramones will be resurrected by me and play a one month non-stop show for the world to enjoy, and it'll be FREE!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
Great movie and album!.......2005-04-05
The Ramones did a great job on this album. Two of my favorite songs are on this album, "Pet Semetary", and "Zero Zero UFO". Truly one of the best The Ramones have come up with.
Finally, a GOOD post 70's Ramones album.......2004-12-29
The guy who produced this album also produces Motorhead's classic "Orgasmatron", and man, can you here it! This is by far the heaviest Ramones album. From the bump-and-run of "I Believe in Miracles", to the churning grind of "Don't Bust My Chops", to the almost thrash/metal "Zero Zero UFO", this album just rocks. It also has a "classic" style Ramones song (the video was "dedicated to the fans") called "Merry Christams (I don't want to Fight Tonight)".
If you feel like you must get an album after "Too Tough To Die", then get this little ditty...you'll be glad you did!
AWESOME.......2004-10-28
As i understand why people don't like this album it is among one of my favorites: Can't Get you outta my mind, I Believe In Miracles and the best one Pet Sematary are all great songs.

Leopold Stokowski's own orchestration of "Pictures at an Exhibition" is not as accomplished as Ravel's more famous one, but he conducts it like the music has no business sounding any other way, and it's an extraordinary sonic experience in any event. In fact, Stokowski's arrangement have turned out to be so effective that they're actually being played and recorded by other conductors now. So there! As for the remainder of the program, the "Poem of Ecstasy" already sounds like a Stokowski transcription anyway--he simply owned the piece- -while the "Firebird" has a lot more Romantic sheen than it usually does. A great memento of one of music's true originals. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:
Lucid dreaming? .......2007-02-13
Oh, please! I guess it depends on your idea of dreaming.
If you enjoy dozing off with the electric blender on high, then you've gotta place this in your bedroom.
Seriously -- the musicianship is highly competent, and there is an obvious commitment to the entire production. But this CD is not dreamy.
The album title nails it: "Rhythmic FISSION -- digital revisions of classic trax."
A Dreamy Listening Experience.......2004-06-01
This music is ideal accompaniment for lucid dreaming...Some of the tracks are loud, fast, and flashy ("Chasing Bartok" track #1, "Machines" track #10 come to mind) while others are fragile and soothing ("Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito"). Any one of these songs would be a superb compliment to a movie soundtrack--they all have this movie-dream-type quality to them, whether the movie/dream is creepy, beautiful, sad, or just plain experimental electronic music. Tracks 12-14 are heavy on vocals: Track 12 is very similar to the enigma song "Beyond the Invisible", while "I would Kiss You" makes me think of Loreena McKennitt with a dash of techno-renaissance flair, and finally "New World" has its good moments, but sounds a bit Disney-esque. "Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito" are the best tracks on the whole album; they sound like the ideal Anne Rice movie soundtrack selections, with "Addio" serving for any goth-vampire-opera-or-nightclub scenes, and "Espirito" for any childhood flashback scenes (hey, that's just what it sounds like!)...
If you've heard the "Verve Remixed" CDs, then I highly recommend buying this CD as well to help balance out your jazz with some classical. Plus the music is brand-spankin' new. So give this CD a chance.

Customer Reviews:
Really Neat!.......2007-04-10
This is my first Gordon purchase, and I really liked it. It is very relaxing music - good for meditation, yoga or just chilling. I like to listen to it when I'm relaxing in a nice, bubble bath. What makes this different from other CD's is that the music itself is interesting enough to make it more than just relaxing background music. I don't know how else to describe it, but I really enjoy this CD!!
Wonderful music to relax to!.......2006-11-03
As a Massage Therapist, I really enjoy working with this music in my office. It not only helps my client to relax, it helps me to focus on the work at hand. It's very soothing with the water sounds and wind instruments.
Oneness Brings Inner Peace into Perspective.......2002-10-03
With the overwhelming popularity of their more recent "native-influenced" titles, such as the critically acclaimed Sacred Earth Drums, Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine, the older classic ambient titles from the Gordon's early Inner Music Series, tend to get overlooked. This is unfortunate in that these titles, and specifically Oneness, create an incredibly rich soundscape tapestry perfect for relaxation and meditation. The Gordon's masterfully weave these synthesizer laden tracks with Tibetian temple bells, Chinese wind chimes, tamboura and silver flute which effectively guides the listener into the deepest realms of blissful inner peace ! This is a great piece of work that shouldn't be overlooked !
