It's a Shame that Conductor Carlo Maria Giulini Turned to Bruckner Relatively Late in Life If this Stunning Performance of the Ninth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic is Indicative of his Affinity for the Composer. This is a Remarkably Noble, Spiritually Alluring Performance with Giulini Favoring Often Extremely Broad Tempos and a Wide Dynamic Range. Rarely Has the Finale of the First Movement Been So Stark and Devastating Or the Scherzo Rendered with Such Mesmerizing Clarity of Vision. Although this is a Live Recording, Deutsche Grammophon's Astonishing Audiophile Sound Fully Compliments this Outstanding Symphonic Triumph. Just Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Superlative - 1000%.......2007-06-09

This is probably the pinnacle of Giulini's great career, and an achievement that can not be enough praised. An interpretation and performance of Bruckner's magnificent 9th symphony that is simply without peers. A deeply moving performance of an utterly beautiful, terrifying, lonely, and majestic piece of music that can't fail to shake you to your core--while taking you somewhere beyond.

5 out of 5 stars CANNOT BE EXPRESSED IN WORDS......THE GREATEST....!!!.......2006-05-15

I am writing this review immediately after having listened to this immense work. I have realized much about this symphony after this hearing even though I have heard the symphony many times, and I will leave out many things that came to me while listening to this symphony but here goes. Bruckner's 9th is by far one of the most intense and personal symphonies ever written. It is his most advanced and modernistic work, however like all his other symphonies one can hear archaic and bygone sounds; for Bruckner and his music sometimes seem to be anachronistic. In his counterpoint the listener can hear pre-Romantic music and this is one of the reasons why I love his symphonies. The adagio of Mahler's 9th was clearly influenced by Bruckner's last adagio. Just compare the opening phrases and the last few bars of each adagio. Of all his symphonies Bruckner's 9th displays the man...the human being most clearly. It is a testament to the human condition, but particularly Bruckners'. The first movement contains much despair and anguish, and we must immediately recall that Bruckner was writing this symphony during the most troubling part of his life. His 8th had been rejected and his health was failing him- I encourage all who would listen to Bruckner's 9th to pick up some books and become familiar with his life. Death, doubt, despair permeate this work. The work embodies subjectivity. Then comes the scherzo. The originality of this movement is amazing and its content can be terrifying. I interpreted this movement as the "demons" or psychological plagues which Bruckner endured throughout his life and particularly during this time. The incessantly repetitive rhythms and notes portray this most vividly. Lastly we have the adagio and again comes the anguish, fear, and sadness. But then after the first few minutes we hear a most unexpected fortissimo major chord, which banishes all darkness-perhaps Bruckner's faith in God is displayed here. When I first heard this part I thought It might be the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. Finally we get the ever pressing feeling at the closing notes of the adagio that there is no resolution, only acceptance and perhaps some hope. Bear in mind Mahler's closing notes as they seem to indicate the same feeling.

Bruckner left a some parts of the finale and its coda unfinished, therefore the finale can never be exactly what Bruckner would have written, despite noble attempts at a reconstruction. However I believe what music we do have(in the finale) should be used in recordings and concerts. For Bruckner would most likely never have approved of performances with just three movements. That being said this is still my favorite Bruckner 9th performance, until I hear one with the reconstructed finale and with the first 3 movements played with equal or surpassing beauty and power. There is so much that can be said about this symphony in fact I'd love to write a book on it. Bruckner's 8th and 9th are in my opinion the most profound, intense, and beautiful symphonies ever written. I have left out any mention of the objective values of this symphony since I am merely a layman, however I am sure they are many. Truly this symphony is Bruckner's soul bared before us, and like all great art it affects us so greatly because we can relate to it- and furthermore It speaks directly of the human condition.

Now for a review of the album. When I first heard this version of the Ninth I immediately felt that it was the superlative reading. However I have not heard many other recordings. Guilini and his orchestra play absolutely magnificently. Again words do not describe the performance. I recommend this recording to anyone who wishes to experience Bruckner and great art. So stop reading and go listen, for music like this can truly only be heard and felt! 5 Stars in the sky do not equal the grandeur, breadth and power of Bruckner's 9th symphony.

5 out of 5 stars BRUCKNER THE ANGEL.......2006-01-31

ONE MUST BEAR IN MIND THAT ANTON BRUCKNER WAS AN OLD FASHIONED, DEVOUT ROMAN CATHOLIC, WHO NEVER REALLY SEARCHED FOR GOD, UNLIKE MAHLER, FOR INSTANCE. ANTON WAS HEAVEN INTOXICATED. DESPITE THE SOARING DRAMA AND MAJESTY OF HIS SYMPHONIES, BRUCKNER WAS NEVER AWARE OF HIMSELF--HE COULD NO SOONER STRIKE A POSE, THAN RESEMBLE THE BIBLICAL PUBLICAN CONTORTING HIS FACE, FOR ALL TO SEE, WHILE FASTING. PERHAPS GOD SENT AN ANGEL TO EARTH IN 1824, AND EVEN THOUGH THE CRITIC HANSLICK WOULD NOT HAVE AGREED, THIS WINGED MESSANGER COMPOSED NOT SO MUCH FOR HIS CONTEMPORARIES, BUT FOR THE AGES. I THINK GIULINI, NOW WITH BRUCKNER AND THE
"OTHER" ANGELS, UNDERSTOOD. ONE OF THE FINEST OF ALL RECORDINGS OF ANY BRUCKNER SYMPHONY. GOD BLESS YOU ANTON AND CARLO.

5 out of 5 stars Giulini's shattering Bruckner 9.......2005-10-04

I bought this disc during a trip in Innsbruck. First I was reluctant because of the high price. But the instinctive attraction toward Giulini's art had woned at last. I discover probably one of the greatest interpretation of the mighty Bruckner's symphony no.9 . In my opinion the only true rival of this version is the mystical Celibidache with Munich Philharhomic - 1995 on EMI. Listen to the huge crescendo built from second theme just before the serene finale of the Adagio. It is a moment of awesome true terror. Giulini reaches here a tension that's unrivalled on disc. It's truly shattering. This happens only when music is regarded as "wahrheit" and not just a simple sonorous pleasure.
Five stars and my highest recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST TO HAVE FOR EVERY BRUCKNERIAN.......2005-08-31

I don't remember a bad, poor or ordinary performance from Giulini's catalogue. This performance is also truly great:Powerful, glorious and spectacular..Tragic crescandos, exciting coda of first movement and firm in structure. This is a live recording(1988-DDD) but better than many studio recordings. There are only two great interpretations among digital accounts and both are live performings:Giulini 1988 and Celibidache 1995 with MP(on different-way)... As a great Bruckner fan I bought or listened all important performings (from B.Walter, Schuricht and Van Beinum to Solti, Wand-BP-live, Haitink, C.Davis, Tate etc.) and according to me there are ''a few'' great Brucknerian conductor on the ''great performing'' of the Ninth: Kabasta (1942-MP,live,historical recording, for collectors), Jochum(1964-BP and 1978-SD), Celibidache(1995-MP,live), Wand(1978-Koln), Karajan(1966-BP) and 'undoubtly' Giulini(1976-CSO, this 1988-WP-live and 1996-SWR Stuttgart-live)...Do not miss.

The recordings that Giulini made with the Chicago Symphony between 1969 and 1976 document an extraordinary partnership and remain among the finest of the conductor's career. Giulini's Mahler First is more lyric than most, yet with enough energy to satisfy Mahlerians; the last movement a tribute to the conductor's unerring sense of orchestral balances even in crushing climaxes. His rendition of the orchestral movements of Berlioz's "dramatic symphony" Romeo and Juliet excels in its poetry, the warmly caressing Chicago strings in the Love Scene irresistible. The Beethoven Seventh is an eloquent blend of the Dionysian and Apollonian approaches to this "dance symphony," with glowing horns, driving rhythms and lovely solo turns. Giulini's later remakes of the Beethoven and other works in the set often were soporific; here, he's on target. This Bruckner Ninth, for example, is grandly rhetorical but full of passion. The Brahms Fourth is a highly personal account, with a ravishing slow movement, while the Stravinsky ballet suites reveal the Chicagoans at their most refined; the Firebird exquisitely colored, Petrushka, amazingly precise. Classic recordings, well transferred; a bargain that shouldn't be missed. --Dan Davis

4 out of 5 stars A mixed bag from Giulini.......2006-12-14

I have always been a fan of Giulini's conducting since I began listening to Classical. In this case, I bought this disk for four reasons 1. You can never have too many recordings of Bruckner or Mahler. 2. It's Giulini for God's Sake. 3. I was curious to hear a remastering of his sensational Brahms 4. 4. I could finally get his fantastic Firebird Suite on CD. Mission accomplished...however the Brahms and Stravinsky are the highlights on this disk and I already had those recordings (although it was nice to get an upgrade to CD). The Mahler is clearly outclassed by competition from Kubelik and Horenstein. The Bruckner bested by Jochum or Tintner on Naxos. I don't regret buying the disk, however, while I have multiple recordings of the Brahms and Stravinskky...Giulini's readings will always have a special place for me.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks to EMI ; Thanks to Amazon. .......2005-10-14

Giulini is always among my favorite conductors and this set includes some of his great recordings with CSO(1969-1976,studio,stereo) that you can not find their another editions: Beethoven 7 and Bruckner 9 ( + Mahler 1, Brahms 4, Berlioz-Romeo&Juliet, Stravinsky-Petroushka&Firebird Suites.)
CSO on its top form under the baton of Giulini...Very well recorded sounds by EMI...Wonderfull edition(not cardboard!)...Incredible price for 4 CD... Highly, highly, highly recommended...

4 out of 5 stars A nostalgic return to an outstanding period for Giulini.......2005-10-09

The reviewer who says that these are among the most celebrated of classical recordings is exaggerating. Giulini's Chicago recordings for EMI were mostly commercial failures and quickly vanished from sight after a brief life on LP. After a spectacular early stretch with Don Giovanni, the Marriage of Figaro, and the Verdi Requiem, Giulini should have shot to the top tier of recording artists.

But as one hears on this excellent but not great collection, Giulini's Mahler is not as exciting as Bernstein's, his Berlioz not as gripping as Colin Davis's, his Brahms not as full of integrity as Klemperer's or Karajan's. He stood well below those great condcutors for much of his career, and yet Giulini was undoubtedly special. He just continued throughout his career to be spotty. His Bruckner Seventh on a live BBC recording is spectacular, even better than his inward, mystical recordings of the Burckner Eighth and Ninth for DG. I greatly admire his DG Schumann Rhenish Sym., his Erocia and Beethoven Fifth, and a live War Requiem and Schubert Ninth, both on BBC--while also acknowledging that he made many other recordings that didn't touch greatness.

I think Giulini had greatness in him, but there was some inner chemistry that had to fire, and even he didn't know when that would happen. In this regard he was like Klaus Tennstedt, who was even more erratic.

Giulini should have given us a great Mahelr Ninth and Das Lied von der Erde, but he didn't. HIs Missa Solemnis and Beethoven Ninth should have been towering spiritual achievements, but they are actually almost routine by great conductor standards. Sadly, he had no sublime autumn to his career; the late recordings on Sony and DG are distressingly slack and ponderous, often parodying his famous spirituality on the podium.

I think eveyrthing in this bargain set is of a high standard, not Giulini at his very peak but close.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid EMI Commemorative of Giulini and CSO.......2005-02-22

During the period from 1969 to 1976, distinguished conductor Carlo Maria Giulini made magnificient recordings for both EMI and Deutsche Grammophon with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, while serving as the orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor. These recordings remain among the most celebrated classical music recordings ever made, most notably his Mahler symphony recordings. In honor of the retired conductor's 90th birthday, EMI has issued most of his finest Chicago Symphony Orchestra recordings; most notably a very intensely lyrical Mahler 1st Symphony that earned a 1971 Grammy Award for best orchestral recording and a fine Brahms 4th Symphony. Often underrated as among the 20th Century's greatest conductors, I am delighted that EMI has recognized Giulini's legacy by issuing this fine 4 CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Genius Well Served.......2004-10-07

Carlo Maria Giulini's long collaboration with the musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra yielded some of the most magnificent performances of the twentieth century. But while the CSO's brilliance was widely known, Giulini's success in focusing attention on the music rather than himself kept his own prodigious talents hidden from portions of the art-music world. This remarkable four-CD set helps to correct that oversight. Included in the collection is the long-overdue reissue of the Giulini-CSO Mahler Symphony #1, which won a Grammy for best orchestral LP in 1971, and a ravishing account of the Brahms Symphony #4, which Giulini first conducted at a concert celebrating the liberation of Rome in 1944.

Giulini performances mesmerized listeners from the opening downbeat, and the spell was rarely broken. Every phrase was shaped, yet sounded entirely natural. The music breathed as if driven by the human soul, rather than by the inanimate metronome. No detail was too small, yet the whole was not lost. The sound had an inner glow, with the viola and cello parts bathing the top and bottom lines with color and warmth. Lyrical passages flowed with a transcendent beauty; fiery sections cut the air with knife-edged precision and power. Climaxes accomplished their purpose without skewing orchestral balances. Through it all, players eagerly and lovingly responded to Giulini's overarching request: "Touch the heart."

Because of his sensitivity to the music's architecture, Giulini preferred to record entire movements in a single take. As such, his performances should be experienced in context, i.e., from beginning to end. Also, Giulini's extraordinary attention to detail is best appreciated in a suitably quiet setting, and on excellent sound equipment.

Giulini sought to make every moment of every performance meaningful and memorable. He loathed the mundane in music-making, and saw his role as "serving genius." Giulini interpretations often left listeners with the sense that they had just heard a great masterpiece for the first time.

"There was never any show about him," longtime Philharmonia Orchestra violinist Gillian Eastwood told WFMT Radio and EMI Classics as part of a four-hour documentary celebrating the now-retired conductor's ninetieth birthday in May 2004. "He was genuine, he was sincere in his music, he worried about everyone individually. The likes of him we shall never, ever see again."

Which is all the more reason to treasure these performances for the ages.

This latest compilation release from Deutsche Grammophon, hot on the heels of The Yellow Guide to Opera, consists of not only three CDs, but also a 144-page booklet that provides biographies of 100 composers, a glossary explaining 100 musical terms, and notes on each of the 42 tracks on the discs. Aimed, clearly, at newcomers to classical music, the three discs cover almost five centuries of music, arranged chronologically from the Kyrie of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli to Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Orchestral, chamber, and vocal are all represented, performed by a roster of celebrated names: the Amadeus Quartet, Martha Argerich, the Vienna Philharmonic, and Herbert von Karajan, to name but a few. All in all, a value-for-your-money way to either become more familiar with classical music or glimpse some of the treasures of the DG archive. --Rebecca Agnew

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ten CDs of Magical "Musik".......2005-12-23

This ten CD boxed set contains the first batch of releases in DG's "Musik...Sprache der Welt" series. Aside from a flimsy paperboard box/container and a booklet featuring an essay on DG's post-WWII recording activities, the packaging is identical to the single disc releases. I have reviewed eight of the ten individual titles included in this collection:

        Bohm - Beethoven Syms 5 & 7
        Bohm - Brahms Sym 2 / Reger
        Furtwangler - Schumann / Haydn
        Jochum - Bruckner Sym 9
        Jochum - Mozart Syms 33, 36 & 39
        Markevitch - Berlioz / Bizet
        Markevitch - Schubert Syms 3 & 4
Sanderling - Beethoven Sym 2, Piano Cto 3

Instead of repeating those reviews, please consult the individual Amazon listings. No matter which way you purchase these value-priced classic mono and stereo performances, this is great music not to be missed.
