Happy Birthday
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
To celebrate its sixth anniversary as an ensemble, Kremerata Baltica presents a light, loving, and musically interesting confection. After an opening polka by Schnittke (who knew he could be so frothy?), we get 11 variations on the song "Happy Birthday" by Peter Heidrich, à la Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and some dance movements. Delightful. Elsewhere, Franz Waxman's Variations on "Auld lang syne" are as clever as they are unexpected and charming. More variations--this time on "God save the King" by the 19th century composers Ghys and Servais--afford Kremer and cellist Marta Sudraba a fine time, and Teddy Bor's brief riff on Mozart's omnipresent "Eine kleine nachtmusik" is a hoot. There's more, but the point is made: Classical music can be fun and sophisticated, and Kremer and his group remain virtuosi, one and all. --Robert Levine

Would you like ketchup with your bug?.......2007-05-05
The person who sang O Mio Babbino Caro is Carmen Monarcha. Do a search for her on YouTube; she's really fantastic!
Anyway, I saw Andre Rieu on a PBS special on television and it looked like such an awesome, high-energy concert! The CD is not so exciting, but it is worth buying just for that beautiful aria.
he makes you get up and dance.......2007-04-10
my 3 yr old enjoys this as much as us
Live in Dublin.......2007-02-17
The music is really toe tapping and excellent. Andre Rieu is a master of music.
Live in Dublin.......2006-07-05
This concert is magnificent in its energy and in the great performances by Andre Rieu and the Johann Stauss orchestra. I watch it when I need lifting up. I love the audience interaction which makes me feel as if I'm there in person.
Live audience is great........2006-05-03
This has to be one of Andre's best. The live audience adds much to the music being played. I wish I had been there for the performance.

Customer Reviews:
A well chosen album title.......2007-01-10
I was desperately looking through the internet for a tango "happy birthday" and the tune was there, in this album. After I purchased the cd, I read the booklet included and there I found mentioned that "the album's title is not merely a reference to the popular tune, but a celebration of the ensemble's anniversary". So, I was happy to have finally found a tango "happy birthday" but I was also disappointed because this was not the playful album I was looking forward to listen to.
But this is a bit unfair for this excellent orchestra.
If what you are looking for is innovations on the romantic classicals... well this could be it. The point is that this is an album for listeners who know their way into classical music.
Other than that I should suggest that innovation regarding any classical music "playful" album would be to capture the listener's interest with more daring ways than that.
Happy Birthday by Gidon Kremer.......2007-01-09
This is a nice "classic" touch for any birthday celebration--great musical treatment of a most familiar tune!
A perfect birthday gift.......2006-01-26
I bought it out of my own devotion to Gidon Kremer and another one for a food friend's birthday. Kremer never let me down. This is another outstanding CD and a perfect birthday gift, even for non-classical lovers. However, to be very honest, I am not totally satisfied with all the tracks but still it's highly recommended. I would say it is an almost-must-have for your CD shelf. The variation of the traditional 'Happy Birthday' is fantastic if not too commercial.
Jest with Zest.......2005-11-26
If you enjoy parodies, this will be the perfect album for you. The jokes played on the various composers are amusing and refreshing, especially for music students who bore their brains out analysing these composers. Take a fresh view and enjoy! Even though they may seem meaningless initially, they grow onto you soon enough; and you will start asking - why not?
I want to play the variations myself!.......2004-07-22
My God...I will be too grateful to anyone who can show me where I can get the printed music of the "Happy Birthday" variation ....

An encouraging sign for Sesame Street collectors.......2005-01-22
Leaving aside the music on this album for one moment, let me first thank the good folks at Sony Wonder and Children's Television Workshop for finally getting it (almost) right with the Sesame Street Records reissue program. For years, Sesame Street collectors have waited in vain for straight CD reissues of the original records; this is about as close as we've come, and surprisingly so. The reason for my surprise is that HAPPY BIRTHDAY features Northern "David" Calloway on a pair of tracks (the album's two best, incidentally), and Sony Wonder has had a policy of removing cast members who have departed (literally, in the case of Calloway, who died in 1990), replacing them with inferior re-recordings of the vocals (by minor characters such as Hoots the Owl or major pains like Elmo and Zoe) over the original backing tracks. (For a well-considered editorial describing the problems with the Sesame Street reissue program, Amazon/Borders.com customers should check out the review by Michael J. Chrush of the horribly botched MERRY CHRISTMAS "reissue," though to call it that is stretching the term considerably.)
Perhaps in response to just criticism from Mr. Chrush and others, perhaps after seeing the success of the SONGS FROM THE STREET box set with nostalgic adults, Sony Wonder/CTW has righted the ship with HAPPY BIRTHDAY. The entire original album (almost) is included, complete with lyrics. Also, since Wonder/CTW still insists on using covers other than the original album covers (an inexplicable policy), at least it is good to see a cover that is well-thought-out and nicely presented, rather than the cheap, cheesy covers that adorned earlier packages like "Numbers" or "Oscar's Trashy Songs." I was sorry that some lunkhead decided to omit the second chorus of "Happy Birthday To You" that appears later in the album (in fact, its lyrics are printed in the corresponding slot in the booklet, which makes the decision more puzzling). But progress has been a long time in coming here, and we'll take what we can get.
The music? Well, they don't make 'em like this any more, and with good reason, since the two prime songwriters, Joe Raposo and Jeff Moss, have passed away far too soon. This is a Moss album, and though it contains some of his more formulaic fare like "Musical Chairs" (which at least gives the distinctive session players room to stretch out a bit), it also features fine numbers like Oscar's "A Very Unhappy Birthday To You," Bob McGrath's showpiece "Blow Out The Candles," Calloway's funky "A Cat Had A Birthday," and the title track, one of the best tunes Moss ever wrote, which picks up where his still-astounding (and criminally unavailable) "My Name Is David" left off. All in all, a fine album, and a welcome return to the catalog.
Is this the start of the comprehensive reissue campaign that Sesame Street collectors have desired for years. Will SIGNS, LET YOUR FEELINGS SHOW!, AREN'T YOU GLAD YOU'RE YOU?, or even the Holy Grail of Sesame Street records, ON THE STREET WHERE WE LIVE, follow? Or is this just a happy accident, a one-time-only lucky strike? Time alone will tell. But one thing's for sure: collectors who want more straight reissues as opposed to endless (and careless) repackagings should pull out the credit card now. Even with something as pure and delightful as Sesame Street music, money talks. So consider this an investment, and one you can make without fear. What we have here, my friends, is the real deal, and it's about time!

Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein ... and if they could hear this collection, they would love her right back. The curly-haired, honey-voiced Tony-winning star has been more closely associated throughout her career with Stephen Sondheim and Jerry Herman, but she's perfectly suited to the grand waltzes and introspective moments of the R&H canon. "If I Loved You," "It Might As Well Be Spring," and "Something Wonderful" would probably make anyone's wish list for this combination of star and songs (a list that would also last much longer than 46 minutes). Other welcome selections include "Some Enchanted Evening," "Out of My Dreams," the little-known "I Haven't Got a Worry in the World" (from the play Happy Birthday), and the inside joke of "There Is Nothing Like a Dame," all supported by the baton and orchestrations of Sondheim favorite Jonathan Tunick. This is a warm valentine to the beloved songwriting team. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
A Great Recording by A Great Artist........2004-10-14
I totally disagree with the previous negative reviews of this cd. What were they listening to anyway? Certainly not this recording. First,Bernadette Peters is THE greatest Broadway musical performer of our time. I rate her right up there with Merman,Martin,Verdon, and Channing. She has a beautiful and distinctive voice, and her acting ability shines through every song. One reviewer said that these songs were originally written for large, operatic voices. What??? With the exception of Pinza, this is simply not true. When I have heard opera singers perform R&H songs,it just doesn't work. Too big. Actually,Bernadette suits these songs perfectly. Her somewhat softer voice gives a new dimension and insight to the grand old standards. I will give special praise for her performance of the songs: IF I LOVED YOU, OUT OF MY DREAMS, SOMETHING WONDERFUL, and SOME ENCHANTED EVENING. And extra special praise for SOMETHING GOOD. She brings life and passion to this song;I have never heard it performed better. I was greatly moved by it. If you love Rodgers & Hammerstein and if you love Bernadette Peters, BUY THIS ALBUM! You will love it.
To the critics of "BP Loves RH"..........2004-04-17
I would ask detractors of this CD to consider the dates and location when and where this album was recorded: Sept 19, 21 and 24, 2001 at the Record Plant(sic)in NYC. Get it yet?
What if you were BP and Tunick, professionals as you are, recording a RH album for Angel eight days after 9/11? Would you be at your best? And singing "well worn, sentimental" RH songs recalling a time when NYC was the Great Big Apple of the World. Wouldn't a lump be in your throat? Listen to "It Might as Well Be Spring" again. Does it sound cheerful and relaxed? Or a little sad?
My friends, this is BP's 9/11 tribute to a City that has treated her like royalty. With Dame and Dope being the only exceptions, perhaps Tunick's otherwise subdued orchestrations reflect the mood of the day and of the performers and engineers present at the studio. This is why I heartily recommend this recording to BP fans. I didn't get it either until I read the stats.
Not Totally Awful, but She is Much Better than This.......2003-11-21
Bernadette Peters is a legend; one of the few true Broadway musical legends still performing today; and that's why it pains me to say that her latest album is also her weakest work.
While her beautiful voice is still intact and capable of being as gorgeous as ever, she just doesn't seem to breath life into any of these songs. Even "Some Enchanted Evening" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" -- two songs that beg for emotion -- don't even get near the credit they deserve. And during some of the tunes, her voice seems to almost crack, although it never quite does.
I don't want to sound mean here. I love Bernadette Peters; but I also know she is much better than this album. Want proof? Purchase the cast recording of Gypsy :)
Her masterful concert for PBS was done just a couple years earlier. It's almost hard to believe this is the same energetic and spunky singer.
It's a grand night for singing? One wouldn't think so by listening to this.
Am I missing something?.......2002-12-31
I received my copy of this CD the day after watching an American Masters bio of Richard Rogers, and I was psyched. I love Bernadette Peters and I adore Rogers & Hammerstein - but I was sorely disappointed in this album. All the way through it I kept having the feeling they had to wake Ms. Peters up between cuts. Even songs like "It's a Grand Night for Singing" had about as much spark as a wet match. The arrangements just did not do justice to either Ms. Peters or Rogers and Hammerstein.
I feel like a traitor, but I just cannot recommend this CD.
The Fabulous Miss B Does It Again!!!.......2002-11-21
Not that I ever, EVER doubted it, but this album just reaffirms in my mind that Bernadette Peters can do ANYTHING! Every single song is gorgeous. Each note sung with extraordinary passion. And she has colored each lyric with layers and layers of meaning and subtext, a skill that has led to her being known as the foremost interpreter of the works of Stephen Sondehim.
Not that there's not some fun in there, too. "The Gentleman is a Dope" and her version of "There Is Nothin' Like a Dame" (she is the first female to record this, I might add!) are great examples of how she is able to bring her wonderful comic abilities into the music of perhaps the greatest team of composers ever.
Her renditions of songs like "Something Good", "Some Enchanted Evening" and "If I Loved You" are enough to make you believe in love all over again. Then, you have the playful "Mister Snow", which seems like it was written just for Bernadette, and "You'll Never Walk Alone", which still sends chills up my spine every time I hear it.
But let's not forget the fabulous opening tune "It's A Grand Night for Singing", her beautiful version of "It Might As Well Be Spring", the light and lovely "Out Of My Dreams", the extremely enjoyable "So Far", a terrific interpretation of the classic "Something Wonderful" and the carefree "I Haven't Got A Worry in the World".
Each and every one of these tunes is a treasure. This is a wonderful mixture of some well-known and some more obscure Rodgers and Hammerstein melodies... a mixture which is only made better by Bernadette's extraordinary ability to interpret a song- a skill that has helped to make her the Broadway legend she is. It is a must for not only musical theatre fans, not only R&H fans, not only fans of Bernadette, but anyone who is looking for something that's really worth listening to!

Classic Album!.......2007-07-13
If you leave it to the record industry to help you discover music, you might never find this gem. The Muffs is one of the greatest bands in history, so after you buy all their records you should be sending money to their homes. The overall failure of the record industry is quite apparent when listening to The Muffs. This a great album with great production. Kim hits another home run to the parking lot. If you want the true meaning of "evil" just look at which record label puts out these albums.
Kim Shattuck comes up with some fabulously goofy lyrics.......2001-04-25
"You and your parrot/Walk around like you're demi-gods"...great stuff, but how can we as fans keep The Muffs alive?(I mean besides trying to convert our non-believing friends?). This is a terrifically tuneful pop-punk CD that never made a ripple on the charts. Once you can get passed the gravel in Kim's vocals and just go with the flow, you might find it a marvelous doodle, a slippery pop joyride. I know people who cannot stand The Muffs, but it's priceless music, with happy/sad lyrics and grooves that last a lifetime. And what about that brilliant circus artwork? Queen Bee indeed!
I love the Muffs!.......1999-06-04
If you liked the Muffs from their self-titled CD, then you will like this CD. When I play the The Muffs (first CD), I listen to 12 of the 16 tracks. When I play Happy Birthday to Me, I listen to 14 of the 16 -- that is the highest percentage of any CD I own with the exception of Weezer (self titled). Blonder and Blonder is the worse with only 9 of 14 tracks. If you like the preview track then you will not be disappointed.
The best! Let's hear MORE!!!.......1999-05-07
Great guitar sounds, cool singing, great rhythm, blistering energy, sweet songs. Everything I like to hear in a cd! Let's have MORE!!!
Is It All OK? Hell yes!!!.......1999-03-04
Nothing like a band that can laugh at itself and crank on the power chords. Kim can play and Ronnie lays a nice background.
Happy Birthday is a better CD than Blonder, although the debut is still my choice for Muffiation.

Album Description
This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)-the culmination of his "spoken word" mannerto the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedyhence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.
Customer Reviews:
Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20
Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.
Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?

A very fine Dame Kiri .......2006-01-05
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was never between my favourite singers but I have to admit that she is really a respectable artist and this lovely cd proves how versatile she is and how she managed to keep a fresh and mellow tone even in her fifties. She is really at her best in the extracts from Citizen Kane and the operetta The Enchanteress. It's a pity that no Verdi music is included in the program, Kiri Te Kanawa was a great Amelia (Simon Boccanegra) and a moving Desdemona. A very fine Dame Kiri indeed.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!.......2005-04-15
OK. I'm going to go out on a limb here. This is, IMHO, Dame Kiri's finest recorded performance.
I know that's taking in a whole lot of territory, but there is something simply magical, and magisterial, about her singing here.
Yes, I know "perfection" is that illusive impossibility to be sought but never achieved. However, on this night I think Dame Kiri did achieve perfection.
Simply a glorious life affirming performance by one of the great singing artists of the last fifty years.
Dame Kiri, Happy Birthday, and thank you.
Listen to a real diva!.......2002-12-17
Kiri's exquisite voice and expansive repertoire make for an unbeatable combination which reaches its crescendo on this special evening. A full symphony orchestra, two choruses, a jazz trio, and even a tenor (!) help Kiri in celebrating her 50th birthday. (That's her chronological age, the voice is timeless.) The hall's accoustics are excellent and orchestra and audience support without intruding. One of the reasons why I love Kiri's singing is that I believe she sings the songs the way the composer wanted them to be sung without the sometimes annoying embellishments employed by others. Kiri includes songs sung in her ancestral Maori in a program that takes the listener from the opera house to Broadway and then to an intimate jazz club. I love live concerts because I feel most artists are at their best before a live audience and this cd is proof. I don't believe that there is another artist recording today that has covered such a wide range of song styles and done it with such beauty and skill. This disc is confirmation. If you only buy one Kiri cd, make it this one. But don't be surprised if you start buying many more!
She Is the Best.......2002-10-26
The first time I ever heard the voice of Kiri Te Kanawa was on a recording of Salaambo's aria from CITIZEN KANE for the RCA film classics series on vinyl. It was one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever composed by Bernard Herrmann. It was Kiri Te Kanawa performance of this piece that was so incredible. I had seen the film several times, but to hear a high fidelity recording of Kiri Te Kanawa on this particular piece really demonstrated not only the raw talent but also a depth of intuitive emotion that she brought to Herrmann's composition. Anyone that could interpret the inner struggle behind Herrmann's music so precisely demonstrated an uncommon ability to become one with the music. I still can't pronounce her name correctly but Kiri Te Kanawa is the epitome of a well-honed talent. She is a gift to us all. This CD is very welcome.
Brava Kiri!.......2002-08-26
What a truly breathtaking concert! Kiri is obviously one of the top three divas to surface over the past fifty years!
Her technique is spotless, her tonality marvelous, and her intonation superb! For those worried about Kiri's "maturing" sound; age has brought a "different" soprano, but one just as lovely as ever...
The selection of music was fabulous, such a variety brings about an interesting and lively effect...
Kiri's Greatest Hits Live!, was truly a wonderful addition to my collection...I would recommend it to any opera fan!

mediocrity rules.......2000-06-03
Unless you went to this concert and want a reason to remember the evening, I can't imagine why you'd want to own the CD. It has all the disadvantages of a live concert (acoustics are poor), and applause occurs on top of the performances. The interpretations of the music by the vocalists Tune and McGovern are poor. Save yourself the money....
