I love all the cd's in this series. They are inspiring and the tempos are perfect for any class. There are always different cd's out there if you need a change of pace after awhile,but you will always come back to these. I also find his videos to be very helpful . His exercises in the Russian method are a great learning and teaching tool.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Addition to Your Collection!.......2001-06-22

Dmitri Roudnev's CDs for ballet class are not only an excellent investment in your teacher's toolbox, but if you are a beginning, intermediate or professional dancer look no further - this is the CD you have been looking for! I know each volume well because I teach with them, dance to them three times a week in class with Dmitri, and use them at home to do barre work on the days I don't have class. I never tire of the tracks, and neither do my students. The music grows with your students, from their first plie to their best jumps, leaps and turns! You will not be disappointed with this CD, or any of the CDs in his five-volume collection.

Before meeting Dmitri and trying his CDs I was always disappointed with the music CDs I was able to find. They didn't inspire musicality or passion. Something was always wrong with one or many of the tracks - the tempo, length, selection etc. Dmitri's CDs are a pleasure - well thought out, easy to use and well received by my students. I find that my students no longer trudge along to the track, but are now far more expressive and engaged in their work. Roudnev constantly emphasizes musicality in class - one is not dancing if they are just doing the steps. His passion for this art form is easily "heard" in his CDs for ballet class.

Each track is certainly long enough to perform any exercise in ballet class en croix and often long enough to perform the exercise twice. There are many music CDs for ballet, but very few are geared specifically for teaching ballet class. Even fewer have been so carefully conceived as Dmitri Roudnev's CDs have. Full recordings of ballet works are fine for teaching variations or preparing students for performing with a live symphony, but they are rarely a good choice for technique training. The Russian schools of ballet have produced some of the best dancers ever known, including Dmitri Roudnev. Dmitri follows this rich tradition and provides music for class with a repertoire that is complex, musical, inspired, and excellent for students at any level.

Also, please be aware that these CDs are not just the quick collaboration of an instructor and an accompanist trying to make a few extra bucks. Instead each CD is created for the dancer with the interest of developing the best technique and highest level of musicality possible. Remember that Dmitri even uses these CDs in his classes when he teaches! He observes how the students work to the tracks, and asks for feedback. He recently asked for our feedback on the soon to be released Volume V.

In closing, Dmitri loves ballet, and should you get to meet him, you will love Dmitri. While a CD is never a substitute for a person, his CDs are the next best thing. Dmitri's heart and soul are in these CDs, and so too will Dmitri's heart and soul become a part of your students.

This is an exceptional CD for ballet classes. Tempos excellent and allow for flexibility in constructing exercises. Phrasing and melodies superb. The way the music is played helps students achieve coordination and good form in their work. All four of the Roudnev CDs are great. I cannot recommend them too highly.

This album is an absolute joy to experience! The recording proves to all who may doubt, that brass quintet is a medium capable of musical miracles! The pieces here are taken from the orchestral repetoire and have been arranged for five brass voices. Trumpeter Rolf Smedvig and his ensemble perform in a manner that is always immaculate, tasteful and above all, musical. The precision of the enemble playing here is in a word, astonishing. On track #1, 'Procession of the Nobles', for example, there is a moment where the 2nd trumpet begins an ascending line that is overtaken and completed by the 1st trumpet. The transition is so liquid and seemless that the casual listener will not even be aware that the line wasn't played by one person! Tubist Samuel Pilafian offers a lovely arrangement of Copland's 'Simple Gifts' that shows off a wide range of sound from soft and sweet to bold and grand. Another favorite is the joyous 'Slavonic Dance No. 8' with its rollicking, sunny feel and inspiring dynamic contrast. Brass enthusiasts, purchase this recording with confidence! It is amazing!

    This is one of the most inspirational CD's I have ever listened to. Not only is the playing perfect, the choice in music for the CD is perfect. It provides the listener with several different styles, and yet many similar styles. The group plays the traditional Russian pieces with flair and great musicianship, such as the Stravinsky and the Shostakovich. The main reason that I enjoy this CD is that each player is performing their best for this album. Each player sounds even more amazing than they usually do. I especially enjoy when Sam takes the tuba solo from Russian Sailors' Dance down an octave. Each performer from this group is one of the best in the world on their respective instruments. In conclusion, all I can say is that this CD is amazing.

    This was the first brass quintet cd I ever purchased, and it has been by far the best. This group's sound is seriously unparalleled by any other quintet, including Canadian Brass. The blend and unity of style is so perfect that one is encompassed by the music, hearing each part individually and as part of the whole at the same time. Playing arrangements of excellent orchestral music, the Empire Brass Quintet truly demonstrates its virtuosity.

    This miscellaneous disc of music allegedly for children makes a nice listen. It starts off with the highly amusing 'Carnival of the Animals' of Saint Saens, moves on to Ravel's 'Mother Goose Suite', Bizet's 'Children's Games', Dukas' 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' and closes with a bang-up Ravel 'Bolero'. The first several pieces are conducted by Sir Alexander Gibson, the last two by James Loughran. All were recorded in the mid to late 70's and the sound quality is consistently first rate throughout. All in all, this is a very satisfying collection of these short works, and the program works very nicely.

    I received this CD for Christmas and have been listening to it ever since. It is very relaxing music, therefore it can be used for just about everything--practicing ballet, soaking in the tub and, well, just listening to it! I highly recommend this to any ballet teacher, student or anyone who loves classical piano music. I will definitely be purchasing more of Lisa Harris' music!.

    This is a great CD for all levels of ballet class. The tempo selections and variations are wonderful. Students love the contemporary tunes and often try to guess the song while executing barre exercises.

    I have been using this series for the year now and they really are the best. The music is very beautiful and very artistic and my students always respond with emotion feeling. Also I like how they are long for both sides a barre and the group across the floor centre. Of interesting thing which teachers may find out as I did finding out is about when one ask of ones pianist to listen to these records and ask her to try play music like this series. Some of the pianists are insulted. Well I am sorry but standard is very high now just as in company. Very high standard now for ballet class music precisely as with accepted into company. I welcome this very much.

    *all the reviews i've read about these cd's pretty much cover all the bases: barre doesn't repeat exercises so you can work 2nd side without stopping, centre is long pieces of music that give you time for 4-5 groups twice thru on one side, but you have to use something from the barre for short combos with change-groups, all this is NEW, it's like having an accompanyist in your class where you dont have to stop, preps are 4 counts and the students can hear it on the first time
    *it's not vaganova, it's not dimitri, it's sure not david howard--it's pretty much SAB for barre tempos--i think petite allegros might be a little faster if it was balanchine--GREAT grand allegros, there's always 2 of them on all these cd's, 1 slow, 1 for HUGE tours!!
    *and the music is very very beautiful like everybody says, and there's some jazzy funny stuff which i wish there was more of that...like maybe rudy will do a cd of just that--!?!

    I would tell teachers that the bar pieces are long and don't repeat so you have to turn to the second side, and they are perfect for that, they come out even, but if you have to teach slow and give corrections before the second side you have to stop the music in the middle which I hate to do so mostly I don't use Rudy Apfell cds for bar. I love the old Lynn Stanford records for that and they are all on cd now. These Rudy cds center is the best music I have ever heard and the most beautiful music. This volume #5 is really beautiful for the center, there are the 2 adagios and the 2 big waltzs and the gipsy dance and the hungarian dance totaly GREAT. The students love it. And so do I!

    Thes record of Rudy Apfel of what to call independientes in english Independent, by this to signify thes ballet pianistes they make thes record with no of that famous teacher and that famous school so one must know music is so personal for them, music it speaks what he think of ballet class, what he think of very technic of ballet, what he think of very dancers whoso ever be, and he is not dancer, he is aficionado. Well ?el independiente worthy he present with no famous teacher famous school? One must able know "pretty quick" use record is such pianiste worthy, is such pianiste independiente possess idea of our art, possess reverence of our art. Is he aficianodo worthy.
    More of 40 yeares teach I am most pleasure by independientes Michael Roberts and Steven Mitchell and that one he is special to me estimable wonderful Josu Gallastegui. !Yes! there are los other independientes, M Phillipe Reverdy that one I know in Paris many years before now and the plump (!yes not bad!) Lisa Harris I know before in city Seattle of Washington state. Thes ones give fully good to the ballet class in before now. But we need now are change, some independientes not useful than that once.
    Time change how it is done in the class. Recall when pianiste execute two 1-2 plunk and plunk "prep" for combination because how it is done is that way, and perfect "okay" for teacher and for we a student, and the one day ther is pianiste execute charming four 1-2-3-4 "prep" in real music velocity and real music cadencioso and it was !confusion!, then it was !so pleasure!. We now say !Y! and pianiste today know we now todos demand four 1-2-3-4 "prep" which will be charming and apropos the combination. So about how time change how it is done.
    So of other change is I think now we demand the music to be beautiful. Since I find Josu record I demand the music on all ballet record it is beautiful. You must able to see write a review Josu's many so beautiful record so I needless to write again in english here in Rudy Apfel write a review.
    Now, for Rudy Apfel. Yes, thes many new record on the compact disc of Rudy Apfel are new change. Thes many new record are beautiful as we now demand. Thes record have the most beautiful anything pianiste play class for me as we now demand. Thes music pieces endure for the doble and reverso for the barre, excellent for the practicos. Thes music pieces for the milieu special beautiful excellent and endure.

    This cd and also #4 which I also have are really great for ballet class. I teach pretty much the sab type class for barre and my own type of combinations for center. I use the center tracks a lot because they are long and even counts and don't just repeat and also they are really very dancy. I teach adults and intermediate level dancers and my students love these cd's. The grand allegro selections are really great, I can do 2 times through the groups without having to stop which is really unusual in ballet cd's. Also cd #r has a lot of Gershwin music which my students really love.
