The Little Prince

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This may not be the most sophisticated opera undertaking of the decade, but it's one of the loveliest. There are precious few operas which really appeal to children--I've never seen a child sit through Hansel and Gretel without fidgeting--but this one is magical. Composer Rachel Portman is well-known and respected as a composer for film; she has among her credits The Cider House Rules, The Human Stain, Chocolat, not to mention Emma (1996), for which she won an Oscar. Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella Le Petit Prince is a sentimental favorite of millions, and it's easy to explain why: the combination of poignancy and perception, and the wistfully sad relationship between the Prince from another planet and the downed pilot, which ends in a transcendent acceptance of death, is exquisite once the refusal to believe is eliminated. If you meet the work half way, you're absorbed entirely. Portman's music, and this performance, will bring you right into the vividly colored dream in an entirely accessible idiom. It would be easy but fruitless to condescend to this work. It's just so pretty, and the performances so fine, that all criticism falls by the wayside. Treble Joseph McManners is an ideal Prince; he never makes you sick with cuteness. Baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes is always believable in the role of the Pilot--and this is not an easy, throwaway part. The familiar Leslie Garrett, Tom Randle, and Willard White are on hand as soloists too, and former boy soprano Aled Jones makes a cameo. This is beautiful, charming music that complements the words. The more one hears the music itself, the more unselfconsciously enchanting it becomes. Drop your pre-conceptions and enjoy. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28

These Disney tunes done in the style of classic composers are so much fun. Children and adults alike will enjoy these songs over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Walt would be quite honored!.......2006-12-20

For many a baby boomer, Walt Disney meant animation. But, besides that, music played an important part in the telling of the story. So interested in music was the animator that he fashioned one of his greatest triumphs ("Fantasia") on the works of the great masters.

Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.

Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04

Being a classical music connoisseur, I often listen to my local public classical radio station to hear the works of the great composers of old and of today. One day the station played "Colors of the Wind" and announced it was from this CD. I fell in love with it. I am a huge Disney fan who has over 350 Disney songs on my iPod. Pretty much the only music I listen to is either classical or Disney. And having them combined makes this CD euphoria for the ears.

Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.

I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?

4 out of 5 stars sleeping to Disney.......2006-07-30

I am really pleased that there is a classical music cd that has only Disney classics so that I can play them for my infant daughter while she sleeps. We are big Disney fans and it's fun to play these instead of the regular classical music. They sound just like the original songs. I would have given 5 stars but I wish they would have had all instrumental music, one of the songs has a choir singing, but it still sound good.

5 out of 5 stars this is a treasure.......2003-05-11

Disney music is always uplifting. Classical music is beautiful. Combine the two - and you get THIS! "Colors of the Wind" is glorious, followed by the enchanting title track. "Beauty and the Beast" is true to the romance of the original. "The Second Star to the Right" is magical. Everything is awesome - and flawless. I initially bought this because I love The Main Street Electrical Parade music, and that is definiely a highlight here - but so are ALL the other songs! This is GOOD STUFF! It is so excellent that it can be a very beneficial introduction to classical music - for kids AND adults.

4 out of 5 stars Showtime!.......2007-05-27

Terfel has an outstanding voice & the talent to use it to good advantage. Being 'show buffs' we thoughly enjoyed the selection of numbers also.

4 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-25

A quote from the accompanying booklet: "Some people might claim that there is no difference between classical and popular music, only between good and bad. Maybe so, but how many singers can put over and all-Schubert recital and a CD of show tunes like 'If Ever I Would Leave You' with equal authority and ease? At this point, probably none but Bryn Terfel." OH, WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!! Many classical singers have accomplished that very task with just as much skill as Terfel. Don't get me wrong here;he has a great voice, but just as I do not want to hear Frank Sinatra sing Monteverdi, I would rather hear Robert Goulet sing Lerner & Loewe. And permit me to cite at least one example of a cross-over: Ian Bostridge, classical British tenor did an album of Noel Coward Songs(Coward , the British Broadway equivalent), which are excellent, but I want to hear him singing Schubert, just as I might prefer Terfel singing Mozart. Having said all of this, it's a well-done disc; song selection is good, and I bought it, but truthfully I don't play it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel in musical theatre-mode.......2006-10-20

It is very hard for an opera singer to suddenly shift their singing talents in another direction (remember the Kiri Te Kanawa "South Pacific" album?), but Bryn Terfel gamely rises to the challenge with an album of songs from the musical theatre team of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe ("My Fair Lady", "Camelot").

On the whole, the album is quite enjoyable, and Terfel performs the usual standards like "If Ever I Would Leave You" and "On the Street Where You Live". Happily, the album also features two numbers from the underrated "Little Prince" score ("I Never Met a Rose" and the Title Song); as well as "There's Always One You Can't Forget" (from the big flop "Dance a Little Closer").

Terfel also gets to perform some of the ladies' numbers like "Hurry! It's Lovely Up Here" (from "On a Clear Day..."). Terfel is the closest thing we have to the old-fashioned matinee idol, and the selections on this album are well-suited to his lush voice. Quite a surprise.

4 out of 5 stars For crossover, very good.......2001-02-25

I usually hate the crossover genre, because the material almost always ends up overdone and not at all true to the idiom and mood of the original. That said, Terfel on this disc is about as good as crossover can get, using his fine voice to render pretty convincing and powerful versions of a number of Broadway classics. While he occasionally goes over the top, he is pretty faithful to the songs, and on those numbers that call for a rousing rendition (They Call the Wind Maria, for example), he really is splendid. Great sound quality and fine orchestral accompaniments.

5 out of 5 stars Terfel's interpretation of showtunes quite appropriate!.......2000-08-22

Terfel's interpretations of Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musicals is a nice alternative to the partiality that an opera singer has to their own genre of music. Terfel, I feel, knew that he could justify his decision to make a recording of show tunes, especially after the completion of G.&S. light opera pieces. I have always held clasically trained singers with esteem and have always apreciated there interpretations of various types of music. Show tunes are an easy bridge for the clasically trained such as Terfel. Yet, as Terfel proves, his voice tends to be a little to strident(in a good way)or strong, in many cases, for a particular passage. For example, the whole song "They Call the Wind Maria" from Paint Your Wagon is way to strong and quite formidable for the ears to stand, yet the opening note from like a fiddle is very light and nastalgic (on- the-range style) motif, yet once Terfel belts out the note, one feels he is a rough and way too tough cowboy who is supposed to be "on the lone prairy." Also, in the song "On the Street Where You Live," one of my all-time favorites, Terfel is enclined to approach the song with a rather strong dose of enthusiasm and playfulness, whereas I feel that the song should be approached with an inner light of emotions that luminate from within the singer that is interpreted as a warmth and passionate inner secret that the lister will agree with, and appreciate as if they are also sharing the secret of a lover who is smitten/infatuated with this "someone" "On The Street Where You Live." NOW...WITH GETTING ALL OF THE COMMENTS OUT...I can reflect on the nature of Terfel and his voice and how this recording is an incredible piece. First of all, I love to hear songs sung in a full voice with a tone with a forward resonance and brilliance that only a artist clasically trained like an opera singer can achieve. Their voices are unmatched in sound and technique, thus furthering the richness of a song otherwise song by a standard singer who might show all the emotions yet the inability to convey their music without a micropone. I wish not to be to brash, for I love broadway singers like Anthony Warlow, for his voice, I believe is exceptional, yet even more like Audra MacDonald. Why? for she has proven to cross over and sing operatic pieces with alacrity. For Bryn Terfel, these songs are easy and playful to execute, yet this does not mean he slacks on the energy needed to support a sound that he is familiar with in operatic arenas. Yet the possible taxing tones need for opera can be exempt here as they are, yet the good habits of a classically trained singer such as word elucution/diction and constant support add a hightened relief to rather standard showtunes, that can be heard half hummed and then easily dismissed by the lister on most occasions to such songs. Yet, if You buy this recording you will not be so enclined to dissmiss these songs that you thought you heard too much, for you will marvel at how an opera singer can transcend the mundane interpretations of musical theater's usual acts, and let a truly mastered voice soar over and orchestra without a sign of straining, producing beatuful full sounds exploding with emotions in a unique, truly intensifying way. these songs will leave an indelibe mark in your mind...yet only if you buy it!

Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

    5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars EXCITING PERFORMANCES VINTAGE STEREO SOUND BUT NOT SACD.......2005-09-27

Despite whar Mr Richman says in his review below this five disc box set does NOT consist of hybrid SACD discs. They are all CDs - generously filled but still basic 16 bit discs. It may be that Mercury's parent company plans to release these discs singly as three channel SACDs but here you get the two channel mixes that originally appeared on LP and on the 1990s CD releases. It would have been great to hear them in three channel - Dorati's "Firebird" sounds magnificent on SACD - but this box is still a bargain. There's some low level hiss and the occasional tape clunk but these are small blemishes on some exciting late 50s and early 60s recordings that make most of today's offerings sound sterile and cautious. Dorati's Tchaikovsky is never winsome or self-pitying. As a masterly ballet conductor Dorati never ignores the lilt and sway of the composer's waltz-inspired lighter moments - but he and the orchestra (London Symphony and Minneapolis) really let rip for the exciting brass perorations. Try the finale of the "Little Russian" symphony, or "Francesca di Rimini", for some real sock-blowing sound! Even if you own other recordings of these popular works try to find a space on your shelf for Dorati and the inimitable Mercury sound.

5 out of 5 stars Dorati's MLP Tchaikovsky Gems Are Back!.......2005-05-25

Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing as SACD hybrids. Unfortunately, they are now being sold at full-price, despite a competing hybrid series on RCA/BMG being available at midline. In spite of the added expense, I hope this MLP reissue trend will continue, and maybe we'll even see a few items getting their CD debut.

This Tchaikovsky Symphony Cycle by the great Antal Dorati has always been one of my favorite MLP offerings. While a two-disc set of Symphonies 1-3 and a single title of the 4th continue to be available in their original CD incarnations, the CDs of Symphonies 5 & 6 have gone out-of-print recently. However, with this box set they are now deservedly restored to the catalog. Even better is the fact that the four 5CD box sets being reissued have been so reasonably priced. This Tchaikovsky set, and the ones of Dorati conducting Bartok, Paray conducting French music, and Hanson conducting a variety of American music, including his own compositions, have a total cost cheaper than the original single issue CDs! Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

    4 out of 5 stars Disney.......2004-11-30

This cd is really good, i love all the songs. Ariel has always been my favourite disney classic. I only have one problem, the singers arn't the actual singers that were in the films, and thats abit of a dissapointment for me. I would recommend this cd but not to people who actually want to listen to the actual people.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Orchestrals.......2002-02-11

What's best about Disney's animated features, is that they contain amazing orchestral scores and songs. With this CD, one can hear the nuances of the full orchestral scores of 4 of Disney's most popular features, as played and by a full symphony and chorus.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Listening.......2007-01-23

The Kingston Symphony Orchestra (Kingston, Ontario) may not be the NY Philharmonic, but they do a very creditable job of providing wonderful music for easy listening. I was particularly delighted to find orchestral arrangements of these wonderful tunes. I am very glad that I purchased this album and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys this type of music.

    5 out of 5 stars Fun Disney.......2007-01-10

I enjoyed this album and found it useful to choreograph dances for my students.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat sub-standard production quality, but excellent tunes and arrangements.......2005-09-01

The Kingston Symphony Orchestra might not be the very best ensemble in the world (and it shows on this recording), but the lasting power and beauty of the songs on this album and some of the new and lovely arrangements of them are worth the listen. There are some definite technical and musical flaws as far as the recording and ensemble go, but the music and how it's arranged makes up for it.

Three stars for some soaring moments, due to classic tunes and arrangements.

My main beef: Where's The Little Mermaid?? Why discount one of the most beautiful Disney scores ever written?

    1 out of 5 stars Crap!.......2005-08-09

What a scam! Terrible arrangements played by a third rate ensemble, called the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, that sounds more like a bad high school orchestra playing in a gym. Don't waste your money on this dog.

When the BBC production of The Little Prince was playing on our local public TV station two years ago, I was sick on the couch--sick enough that I was there to see it 4 times as it was repeated over the week. I suspect I had West Nile, because in addition to various roving physical symptoms, I was in a slightly odd, emotionally reflective state of mind for days--during which this musical score of The Little Prince simply engraved itself into my head. Eventually recoverying from pining over the eventual demise of my '81 Subaru and again able to stand up and not pass out, I ordered this CD and the music to this day elicits a quiet wonder unique from any other favored music I enjoy. Something very special about this seemingly simple work.

Portman herself describes this as a "children's opera". It is full of children's voices, and, as one result of this, is so charming that one can easily underestimate its other qualities: its wit, its inventiveness (the duet between the adult soprano and the boy treble is especially unusual), and the sense it evokes of soaring, yearning flight. The libretto is beautifully judged, and the whole captures wonderfully the mirage quality of the book. A lovely, haunting, moving work.

An opera lover must be heartend when a major film composer decides to write an opera. It's doubtless less financially rewarding than writing film music, but still composers are drawn to this parallel form of musical story telling.

Unlike alpha-male symphonic film composers like John Williams or James Horner, Rachel Portman's scores have always maintained a certain delicacy--a certain distance from the writings of the old masters, and here she provides us with many charming and beautiful scenes. A smaller orchestra is employed, and much of the music has an impressionistic quality, with many plaintive solos for flute and oboe. Truly lovely melodies also emerge from the essentially through-composed work.

Yet Ms. Portman's unfamiliarity with operatic writing also shows through. First and foremost, I had a certain feeling of monotony. Each scene is beautifully scored, but how many times can one sing "Danny Boy" befoe one becomes sick of it? There was very little musical distinction between scnes. Secondly, the orchestral writing was much finer than the vocal writing, which often seemed repetitious and unimaginitive.

The fact that a boy soprano sings the lead shows a break with operatic tradion. In the end, this seems very much like a children's opera...though one that, like the beloved book upon which it is based, deals subtly with the meaning of love and death.
