Album Description
"The Music of Candyman" CD is the original music scores written by Philip Glass and produced by his production company, Euphorbia Productions for the films "Candyman" and its sequel "Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh". Subsequent to the first "Candyman" film release, Philip Glass’ fans have been requesting access to these recordings. At this time Orange Mountain Music, Philip Glass’ new record company, is very happy to make these recordings available. Newly re-mixed to facilitate home stereo playback from the original masters by Don Christensen, this CD will be an important addition to any serious Glass fan’s collection as well as a stimulating record for all listeners. The "Candyman" films started out as "The Forbidden", a short story written by the acclaimed horror/fantasy author Clive Barker. It is the story of a graduate student’s investigation into a grisly urban legend with distinct racial and social undertones. Director Bernard Rose’s ("Paperhouse", "Immortal Beloved") adaptation has given the narrative an underlying intelligence and believability. Unlike most horror films "Candyman" is low on special-effects but still delivers hair raising suspense and surprising shocks, primarily with its creative imagery. Bernard Rose’s innovative and realistic direction, the excellent cast (Virginia Madsen as Helen the graduate student and Tony Todd as Candyman) and the Cabrini Green location (a notorious Chicago housing project) made this film an original in its genre. Written for piano, pipe organ and chorus, Philip Glass’s score is perfectly suited for this modern gothic tale. Using some of his well established techniques of rhythmic intensity and switching between major and minor key harmonies, Glass’s score is as trance inducing and terrifyingly seductive as Candyman himself.

On his fifth release, eight-string guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter drops the horn section. Joined by long-standing drummer Scott Amendola, and new additions Stefon Harris on vibes and John Santos on percussion, Hunter unleashes a series of 13 groove-heavy numbers, including a cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle." The rhythm section is strong and Hunter's playing is masterful as always. Nevertheless, the individual tracks have a tendency to blur into one another due to the somewhat homogeneous sound of the vibraphone. It's a good effort, though not his best. --Percy Keegan

5 out of 5 stars Don't Be Scared..........2005-07-27

on this quartet release, it's hunter on 8-string guitar, his much hyped labelmate stefon harris on vibes, john santos playing percussion, and scott amendola on drums. charlie hunter went to a new level on return of the candyman. it's a strange combination of instruments for today's ears, and it is usually quite refreshing. plus, hunter's solos are much stronger than in the past, his playing is deeper, and his style is less restricted. it's every bit as funky as his previous albums, but the jazz licks he plays on this one are way better. the addition of a vibes makes the music sound much more spatial, even graceful at times, and, more importantly, gives hunter more of a chance to be a guitar player. check out that horrible album cover too. creepy!

3 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2004-01-17

This is a decent cd, but I was much more impressed by the albums Charlie Hunter and Duo.

As previous reviewers have noted, yes, there are a lot of vibes. If you don't like vibes, you might not dig this album. There is nothing wrong with the way they were recorded.

Some of the things I didn't like were the cover of Fly like an Eagle, which I find semi-tolerable as a pop song and annoying as a jazz tune. Also there are some really cool jams that meld together, one of which I think was based on a tribe called quest song, but they are too short! Charlie should have spent more time grooving on this album, and less time covering Steve Miller songs.

4 out of 5 stars Do Not Shake A Baby !!!.......2001-08-29

Excellent music. Too much vibraphone though.
When I ordered this CD, I was hesitant because
of the mistaken title of track 10,
"shake, shake a baby"
track 10 is "shake, shake it baby"
good CD,less vibraphone and it would of got 5 stars !

5 out of 5 stars Really "cool".......2000-04-26

This is one of those albums that defines the feeling of "cool", "where it's at, daddy". Pop on this CD and turn your living room into a jazz nightclub for 13 groovy songs.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......1999-10-17

Wow, this album is really cool. Charlie Hunter is an amazin player. I don't know why everybody's talking about the vibes; I think they're great!

4 out of 5 stars The guitarman !.......2005-07-09

Since you have come to this page and are reading this review, you probably are familiar with "Luke"'s work. For those who aren't, this is the guitarist of Toto, and one of the three leaders of the band, together with David Paich and Jeff Porcaro (gosh, it's already been thirteen years... We miss you Jeff). Besides playing with his band, he has also played on an infinite number of albums, as a guest artist. The list would be too long to draft here, but he played with Earth Wind and Fire, Boz Scaggs, Kenny Loggins, David Roberts, Los Lobotomys, etc, plus apparently odd collaborations such as a recent one with Larry Carlton.

Over the years, Steve Lukather has released four solo albums (including Santamental, which is a strange fruit), this one being the second. They all respond to a need to express his "harder" line solo (Toto oscillating between a "poppy-jazzy" edge and a rockier line when he took command, at least until Jeff's departure), and that is what he also does here. The album is rock and blues. It has lots of riffs, obviously, and he lets us see why Jeff Beck is his hero. But it also has a couple of surprises : a toto-like ballad ("Borrowed time"), an almost new age-jazz-rock track ("Froth") and a beautiful tribute to his buddy Jeff (the closer, simply called "Song for Jeff"), probably the deepest and more powerful track (over 7 minutes) on this cd, with long and sensitive riffs; it is one of those tracks that make me sit down, close my eyes, feel and go with the flow....Don't overlook the bluesy "you'll never walk alone" (don't know if it's a tribute to British soccer fans though).

The cast is also impressive : Simon Phillips, David Garfield, John Pena, Carlos Trujillo, Lenny Castro, with Fee Waybill (remember the Tubes?), Richard Page (remember Mr. Mister ?) and David Paich collaborating.

The album was recorded live, for the most part of it, but it doesn't really sound like a live album. The quality of the sound is in fact closer to a good studio recording than anything else. If you like Lukather's style and/or are a collector of Toto's works, in a broad sense, you MUST have this one. After all, Luke IS one of the three greats in this genre, with Jeff Beck and Michael Landau.

5 out of 5 stars Keep on pushing, straight ahead !!!!!!!.......2004-03-23

This album is a greatest hits in itself. It is not the first solo album from Luke like the amazon guy says in his brief presentation. It is the second actually. First came LUKATHER (I own three copies of that album), then came this one CANDYMAN and then followed LUKE, sure the worst among the three (but still nice, different I might judge it). I really really loved the first Luke solo album. It was perfect american hard rock from the eighties. When this one came out, a few years ago actually, I immediatly bought it. I liked it from the very beginning but I can say that each year that pass I love this album more. It is a greatest hits really, each track is phenomenal. The music is a sort of bluesed rock fusion with the Luke trademark guitar playing all around (do you know "Jake to the bone" from Toto's Kingdome of desire album? Well we're very close that kind of music here). It is not an instrumental album. Luke sings every song except the last touching and unforgettable Song for Jeff and Party's in Simon Pants which is a pure fusion-rama. Luke was in splendid shape here and the band is stellar, Phillips, Pena, Garfield, all the Los Lobotomys guys were involved in this album. Infact Candyman came out also under the name of the band, Los Lobotomys with the same track list, the very same artwork. If you want to enjoy this set visually buy the DVD from Steve (the only one under his name). It is a Los Lobotomys concert Luke played with this band playing this material. It is incredible!!! Keep on pushing, STRAIGHT AHEAD LUKE !!! Buy this cd. I mean it. I really mean it. BUY IT. It is fantastic music. Better than a lot of Toto stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Solid 2nd Solo CD from Toto Guitarist.......2004-03-11

This is a great rockin' cd from Steve Lukather. This is a solid follow up to his first solo cd 'Lukather' from 1989. This sounds similar to the music style on Toto's Kingdom of Desire cd from 1992 and Toto's 'Tambu' cd from 1995. Steve has a great backing band on this one including;Simon Phillips of Toto on drums,David Garfield on keyboards,John Pena on bass,Lenny Castro on percussion. Luke lays down some solid guitar rythyms and solos as only he can. There are 11 tracks on this cd,3 being instrumental tunes, and 8 tunes with Steve on lead vocals. A must have for Toto and Luke fans.

5 out of 5 stars CANDYMAN - STEVE LUKATHER.......2003-11-16

Following the tragic passing of his dear friend Jeff Porcaro in 1992, and having taken on Toto's lead vocal duties on the hard rocking Kingdom of Desire album and extensive world tour, Luke turned his considerable energies to his second solo album. His legendary mega session-guitarist status aside, most would recognise Lukather for his Toto ballads "I won't hold you back" and "I'll be over you" (both of which were subsequently sampled for summer anthem dance remixes). Candyman, the title a tribute to his iconic hero Sammy Davis Jnr, allows Lukather to stretch out beyond the more pop/rock orientated Toto material and display his outstanding talents in a completely different context. Demonstrating a new drive and energy in both his vocals and guitar playing, Candyman also features his Los Angeles club jam band Los Lobotomys, with Simon Phillips (who replaced Jeff Porcaro in both Toto and Los Lobotomys), David Garfield and John Pena. Lukather pays homage to Hendrix on a hard rocking cover of "Freedom" with backing vocal assistance from Paul Rodgers (Free/Bad Company). "Red House" is also available on an import release of Candyman, billed as Los Lobotomys. The album features the truly awesome 17/8 frenzy of "Party in Simon's Pants" and according to Lukather, a tribute to Steely Dan in "Born Yesterday". Naturally, Lukather's melancholic and reflective mood is captured in "Borrowed Time", "Never Let Them See You Cry", "Never Walk Alone", "Extinction Blues" and the Jeff Beck inspired emotional outpouring of "Song for Jeff". A ballsy cover of Stephen Stills "The Bomber". "Froth" is reminiscent of the original live all instrumental Los Lobotomys album of 1989. From the first riff of the heavy fusion track "Hero With a 1000 eyes" Candyman sets its stall: a brilliant collection of highly emotional material and the finest musicianship.

Album Description

In 1990 Philip Glass was approached to compose a score for the psychological horror film 'Candyman' and he provided additional cues for the sequel that followed. Since the release of these films, there has been much demand for a soundtrack album that until now has only been satisfied by bootlegs and cover albums. 2001.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Scary horror music at its finest.......2006-10-29

I saw the film "Candyman" several years ago and, being originally from Chicago, the film resonated with me more than if had been filmed in a different city. However, what stuck in my head for a very long time was Philip Glass' surreal, creepy musical score. When I learned there was a CD with the entire score years later I knew I had to have it.

The album actually draws from both the original "Candyman" film and its sequel "Candyman II: Farewell to the Flesh" (which I have not seen) and while there is some carryover musically there are really two separate musical suites on this CD. The first seven tracks are derived from the first film and center on a haunting melody that is the leitmotif for the film's protagonist, Helen Lyle. The tune is first heard most simply in "Music Box", before changing to a piano solo in "Helen's Theme" and finally culminating in the crescendo of a breathtaking choir with resonating basses and soaring sopranos. The remaining tracks build on the sense of horror in the film, particularly the staccato section of high notes in "Return to Cabrini."

The second half of the CD (tracks 8-13) begin with a brief reiteration of Helen's theme before changing over to Annie's theme, a beautiful melody sung by an anonymous artist. Whereas the first film made heavy use of piano in the score, the sequel replaces it with a magnificent pipe organ. "Annie's Theme" finds its own culmination with choir and organ in "The Demise of Candyman" which soars to unexpected heights.

While you might not listen to this CD every day, it is well written and arranged, and is perfect to enjoy as scary "mood music."

5 out of 5 stars Darkest Horror Soundtrack.......2006-09-30

Setting aside any other bad reviews this soundtrack got, the music that Philip Glass produced here is very authentic... I have not heard very many horror movies that actually have such a flawless music score besides Clive Barker's "Hellraiser" Parts 1 and 2. This soundtrack sets a morbid mood and can actually bring down a bright sunny day. For those who know how to appreciate something outside the box of the usual cliche, this is a must have for the dark-minded.

2 out of 5 stars There is a reason this music doesn't sound as good..........2006-07-22

It's evident from the very first notes that this is a re-recording, and not a very good one at that. If you absolutely must have this music in some form, get this CD. To be honest, you'd be better off just playing the tracks from the DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Geez, I don't remember the movie music being this bad!.......2006-06-06

Now I admit that I've never heard any other Philip Glass music prior to obtaining this CD. However, I was hooked on the "Candyman theme" song (actually titled "It Was Always You, Helen", track 6) from the first movie, so I figured there would probably be additional good tracks on the CD. Ok, made me look! To paraphrase Dr. Phil, I was "stupified" as to how awful this CD is, other than track 6 and a not-too-bad track 10 (Annie's Theme). Repetitious organ melodies and unrelenting, overbearing choral vocals (drowning out most of the music) comprise most of these songs. Maybe it can be blamed on the producer for a bad mix, I don't know. What I do know is, after getting about halfway through this CD while listening to it in my car, I was looking into my rearview mirror saying "Candyman, Candyman, Candyman", hoping he'd show up in my backseat and relieve me from listening any further. Sorry, but other than the "Helen" track so memorable from the first movie, this CD is probably just for hardcore Glass fans.

5 out of 5 stars Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman......can't do it........2005-03-02

Quite possibly the best horror soundtrack to the greatest slasher movie of all time. Candyman is one of my all time favorite movies you see, and the soundtrack is one of the main reasons why. It is truly one of a kind. Pick it up. Now.

5 out of 5 stars As with all the Candyman movies, a fantastic score.......2003-08-25

There is something unique about the Candyman movies, in that the music is as much of a part of the scare factor than the Candyman himself.

Being a huge fan of the Candyman movies (except No.2!) the music in this movie is fanatastic and is amost as good as that from the first movie.

Excellent to listen to at home recommended!
