This is perhaps the most famous recording ever made of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto, and probably the worst. Poor David Helfgott, who may have been a great virtuoso before his well-publicized mental breakdown, can barely hack his way through this concerto. Perhaps the cruel practice of issuing a live performance recording spares the expense of endless retakes, but it also exposes the pianist's severe deficiencies. The studio-recorded solo pieces are played accurately, perhaps due to endless retakes, but they are so devoid of musical impulse that Helfgott sounds as though he's on heavy tranquilizers. Try Alexis Weissenberg's version of the Rach 3 (RCA Victor Gold Seal 09026-61693-2), or anybody's. --Leslie Gerber

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Horowitz: A Digital Legacy.......2004-11-15

This set includes all of the recordings Vladimir Horowitz did for Deutsche Grammophon in the 1980s, including his historical concert in Moscow.

While the context of his return in Moscow is moving, the studio recordings are simply wonderful. The sound quality is impeccable. The Steinway piano sounds warm but yet crisp and sharp. Horowitz still has plenty of power, and if you don't have a good sound system, you will notice that your speakers will literally fail, due to the overwhelming wall of sound that Horowitz creates in the intense parts.

The tender moments are just as exciting, as they are enhanced by the very quiet and clear digital recording process. Liszt's Standchen and Mozart's Piano Concerto No 23 are only two of a myriad of highlights contained on this boxed set. Having these high quality digital recordings of this piano legend is a blessing that you can't afford to miss. And at this price, it's simply irresistible.

an interesting interpretation.......2007-04-21

This is the first recording of Rach 3 I had ever heard, and after listening to it a few times I knew something wasn't right. So I bought other recordings. The cadenza and the climaxes are all bad and confusing, but there are some interesting parts. It's nice to hear different interpretations of those passages where the pianist is given the freedom of rubatto or accelerando(sp?). It's not a very good recording, but it's worth listening to for different ideas.

onto the main review: i think people often miss the big picture, and like to argue with what they feel to be an established line of thoughts. david's erratic playing and lack of technical control diminishes only so much from the performance, but it does not at all detract from the emotional struggles embedded in the piece - that of which is central. the barrage of wrong notes and 'weird' dynamics only veils this, what's nonetheless present in his performance are the feelings of struggle, of forced acquiescence, of unabashed mourning, and of acceptance. please, while david's rendition doesn't rank above my wild, argerich or ashkenazy, it really isn't as terrible as its cracked out to be. his strangeness and erratic playing shouldn't be trashed as 'bad', but rather stylistically explorative. if he had gained back the technical finesse from his RCM days, or even perfected upon it, this recording will certainly have been something special (maybe even celibidache-ian, but without the zen).

all in all, its not a crime if this is your first rach 3 recording, but i really hope you'd look into other pianists playing the same thing - because the truth is, it is impossible to play this piece well unless you have experience the same sort of devastatingly affecting struggles that david has experienced. it's just that not all of them gets to be made into movies.

3 stars, cuz david is playing the 'hardest piece in the world', whoo! give him credit for where its due, and slam RCA and his wife for exploiting whats left of a former genius.

Let's be serious and face up to the facts: bad records come in hundreds every year. Helfgott's disastrous rendition of Rach 3 may be even worse than the usual clumsy products released by major labels, but it's in no way exceptional as a phenomenon - fraud and bad pianism abound in the market as much as wrong notes on this record. I'd love to see people saving some of their harsh criticism for plenty of supposed masters whose talent depend more on hype and lavish sound engineering than on technique, profoundity and understanding. At least Helfgott has his mental condition as an alibi. If we held many of the much acclaimed pianists who made into the big industry to the same standards we hold Helfgott here at Amazon, or even higher standards since some of them are, mentally speaking, perfectly healthy, the outcome would be deeply discouraging, I guess.

Helfgott plays like he is drunk. Many people favor the Horowitz recording...I have only heard his 1951 recording, and I found his third movement very painful, I didn't care for it at all. Believe it or not (I am going to get shot for this) I much prefer Lang Lang's Alla breve to Horowitz's.

My favorite version, however, is probably the Argerich...talk about insane.

This recording (the Helfgott, that is) is like a child banging on a piano. Oh, I don't deny that I liked the movie Shine, and that I do indeed pity David Helfgott, but...well it's ironic, but he could not play this concerto to save his life.

No one really talks about Lang Lang's recording of it, but I enjoyed it, though there are (as with every recording) some criticisms that I could make about it. At least sonically it is probably the best one out there (most recent, thus better quality).

Well, don't buy this, but listen to the samples and laugh at all those missed notes if you wish. Not to be cruel...o_O
