Road Movies

Here is a CD of chamber works by John Adams: Road Movies is for violin and piano, Hallelujah Junction is for two pianos, and the other three works are for solo piano. China Gates, the shortest piece, is simply beautiful: 4-and-a-half minutes of lyricism. American Berserk, the other miniature, is busy, jazzy and rhythmically rich. Hallelujah Junction, for two pianos, is named for a truck stop on the California-Nevada border, but Adams was thinking more of the area's past, filled with gold prospectors. Its 16 minutes are brawny and energetic; sometimes the pianos finish one-another's phrases, sometimes they form big-boned clusters. It goes through a section of plushness before a jagged last movement---it's as varied, Adams seems to be saying, as America's personality. Road Movies begins with a tempi and attitude evocative of driving down a highway, with billboards and dotted landscapes whizzing by; one might hear in the piano part the road and its turns and in the violin, the changing but much-the-same sights. The second movement is lonelier and more severe and the third is part pure minimalism sped up to a point of mania and part boogie-woogie. The CD's longest piece, Phrygian Gates, is peaceful and moody, with moments which alternately swell and ebb; the second movement goes nowhere and seems to be concerned with a tone cluster at time, and the finale is insistent minmalism, staying close enough to its original key at all times to be comfortable while rhythmically keeping us on out toes. The performances are beyond reproach, with Leila Josefowicz and John Novacek particularly splendid in their difficult Road Moves duos, but with very high praise going to the other pianists as well. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but Adams always catches the attention. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Silly reviewers! Historical Adams.......2006-06-14

What we have here is a hodgepodge of old and (one) new material for piano. "China Gates" and "Phrygian Gates" is actually considered to be Adam's Opus 1, so to find out that his very first mature work does not resound with the same punctuation and feeling that previously works have, like "Harmonielehre" or even the recently released "Naive and Sentimental Music," does not mean that Adams is in anyway losing his "touch" or is begin lose his creative spark. Instead, these two pieces should be listened to and enjoyed for what they represent in terms of John Adams' historical work, or the work which has gotten him to where he is today.

Similarly, "Road Movies" was composed in 1995, "Hallelujah Junction" was composed in 1996, and the newest work, "American Berzerk" was composed in 2003. "Road Movies" is actually a very soothing, contemplative work, but (true) does contain the same expressiveness felt in other works of art by Adams. "Hallelujah Junction" may be the most disappointing piece on the album, but I'm not sure that it's supposed to be taken as seriously as some Adams' fans would like to take it - such as on the level with "On The Transmigration of Souls" or "The Death of Klinghoffer." Adams himself acknowledged that "Hallelujah Junction" is the name of a truck stop on US 395 and that "it was a case of a good title needing a piece, so I obliged by composing this work for two pianos."

No, this isn't Adams' best work, but I definitely think that it surely lives up to his other greatest attempts. Plus, as an album containing solely works composed by Adams for the piano and not for orchestra, this is a nice breather and definitely an excellent addition to one's collection of piano music or for fans of Adams himself.

2 out of 5 stars With all due respect: boring.......2005-02-06

I respect John Adams as a composer. He has done wonderful things, which are ultimately moving. But this CD is boring. Once you leave the violin behind, and in spite of the cute titles, all sounds pretty much the same. For those who want it, nothing more than an intellectual exercise.

3 out of 5 stars Response to frisbee95:.......2004-07-09

I agree. His music is getting very stale (I actually found his violin concerto to be boring). Minimalism, which is a silly term anyway, is essentially gone. I've known the music of Reich, Glass, Adams, Riley, Young etc since the late 70's, and have interviewed and met all of them during my college years. A shame, since much of their earlier output is amazing. One of the best concerts I attended was the Chicago premiere of Harmonium, conducted by Felix Slatkin, at an outdoor Grant Park concert. Adams was there, and I had a great chat with him.

For alternatives, there is always the music of Morton Feldman (particularly the works from 1977 on, which is arguably his best), some decent work by Charlemagne Palestine (Strumming Music is still the best, in my opinion) and a few others. Not to be self-promoting, but just to show that there is recent music with repetitive structures that I think, are of value, you may want to look at http://homepage.mac.com/dtoub/dbtmusic.html for some examples. Not putting my works in the same class as any of the others, but I'd like to think there's something new and interesting about it.

5 out of 5 stars A great composer with all his influences showing.......2004-05-22

What I've come to love about John Adams is the way he borrows from everybody and everything. In many ways, he's the epitome of the Post-Modern composer, because he boldly appropriates other styles and idioms and finds a way to make them his own. This new CD is a prime example of how Adams uses the old to make new. "Road Movies" is clearly the work of John Adams, but the second movement resonates so close to the 2nd movement of the Copland violin sonata that it gives me the shakes. This isn't just a quote or rip-off, but a work that honors a powerful precedent: it's almost a love song to its predecessor. "American Berserk" evokes an array of composers that Adams clearly loves, especially Nancarrow and Ives. "Hallelujah Junction" is a genuinely great tune, with inflections of Gospel and Rock piano playing thrown in to make it tasty. And while this makes my third recording of "Phrygian Gates," I can't complain, as I think it's probably the best work for piano written in the last 25 years. None of these works are "easy" to play, and they're given dynamic performances and crisp recordings, making this CD a unique pleasure.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Adams CD.......2004-05-17

I am a big fan of John Adams, he is my favourite living composer, but I feel that in recent years his work has not been up to the standard of such masterpieces as Harmonielehre, Shaker Loops, El Dorado and Phrygian Gates, one of the works recorded here (again). Phrygian Gates is the main piece on this CD and it is a brilliant piece, one of Adam's best. Rolf Hind's performance is excellent, but do we really need another recording of it? There are many recordings already available for this work, as there are for its smaller companion piece - China Gates. Of the other works on the CD only Hallelujah Junction and American Berserk are premiere recordings. Road Movies was released on a CD a couple of years ago by the California Ear Unit. Again the performance of Road Movies is excellent and the piece is quite good, especially the first movement, but it is a shadow of Adams' great works. Hallelujah Junction is the standout piece of the newer works on the CD. Its sprawling arch recalls the best of Adam's orchestral output and it has a very exciting climax recalling Weill and Lizst. Still, there's something about it that just doesn't move me like his earlier work. American Berserk is the biggest disappointment on the disk, it sounds like a piece that Adams just threw off in a few minutes from a scale formula.
I am very worried about Adam's recent output, is he losing his genius I wonder? Having heard concert performances of some of his more recent, as yet unrecorded orchestral works, such as My Father Knew Charles Ives, Guide To Strange Places and On The Transmigration of Souls, I have been unmoved by them and felt they were only reasonably good at best. All these orchestral pieces and the newer chamber works have their moments, but a work like Harmonielehre is a full 40 minutes of brilliance, something Adam's hasn't achieved in a long time. Naive and Sentimental Music comes close though. I remain optimistic and eagerly await the UK premiere of his new electric violin concerto The Dharma at Big Sur at the Proms this year. Overall though, I'm disappointed with his recent output and disappointed by this CD. I don't think it was really necessary to rerecord the pieces already recorded and there are enough new orchestral pieces that could have merited inclusion on this CD. With Adam's seemingly running out of ideas, and Reich and Glass doing the same kind of music they have done since the 80's, I fear for the future of post-minimalist music. Who can take over from them now that they appear to be stuck in ruts? Michael Torke is interesting but a bit too bland most of the time, Michael Gordon can be very exciting but a bit too weird at times. Where pray is the next great composer in this tradition sprung from minimalism? I think we may have to look to the outskirts of Europe or Africa or Asia to find someone genuinely new and interesting working along the same lines. For now though we'll have to be content with Adam's pastiches, Glass' Hollywood film scores and Reich's uninspiring multimedia work, which although inventive from a multimedia point of view, doesn't actually do anything new or interesting musically. If anyone can point me in the direction of someone new and exciting out there I'd be grateful!

4 out of 5 stars Good music but the Nonesuch recording is better .......2006-02-21

This CD shows a side of Adams that we haven’t seen much. It shows Adams as a master of chamber music as well as large orchestral works like El Dorado. In Road Movies Adams makes use of more jazz here than he did in early works and the second movement is almost neo-romantic in style. I feel that his mature style is much more alive that his early works which were a much more traditional type of minimalism. I can’t help but feel that Adams is leading new area of composers. I definitely recommend you to listen to this music but I think that the Nonesuch recording is better done, and is a much better deal all round.

4 out of 5 stars Minibar: Road Movies.......2003-10-29

I saw Minibar in concert - they opened for Pete Yorn and I thought they were better that Pete (in terms of their performance)! I bought Road Movies soon after the concert and I have enjoyed listening to it. Their sound reminds me of Wilco and Goo Goo Dolls a bit. Lyrics are introspective and intelligent. In general, a great album.

I heard Minibar on the radio, so i went out and bought Road Movies. The album is great!!! I also listen to WHiskytown, Ryan Adams, Pearl jam, csny, all the good stuff! i recomend this album!

5 out of 5 stars They are going to be huge.......2002-09-06

I saw them play a little place in San Francisco last night. They are incredible. Their lyrics pierce you and their sound makes you want to cry. I got this CD, and it is amazing. I absolutely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars "Blown Away".......2001-11-16

As a mother of two pre-teen daughters, I am forced to listen to all types of "pop-music". I have always collected and listened to a large varity of music, so a good friend of mine, who is in a band, turned me on to this CD and wanted my feed back. I fell in love with this group! They could be considered the next best
LA local band since the Eagles. The first weekend I had it in my possession, I was sure I wore it out. Not only are the instrumentals so "wide range" and perfectly mixed, but the vocals were comfortable and true. The title song, Road Movies, will be my new favorite for the time being! As a California native, this song reminds me of a "summer day", driving with the
top down, from the valley to Hollywood. The guitar licks really
move the heart. Getting "Lost in the Details", somehow makes me
look at life now, after 18 years of marriage, it's easy to get in a rut! "Cool Waves" has the potential to ease the mind after any kind of crazy day. All I can say, is you have got to hear this CD. I think these guys are really going to make it, and I hope they make another one even better than this, although that will definately be a challenge. I will always be a fan! Thanks to a friend who let me 'borrow' this one! I have passed along the bands name to friends who I know will enjoy as much as me.

5 out of 5 stars Minibar: My New Favorite Group.......2001-09-06

I saw Minibar open for the Wallflowers, and thought they were amazing, so I got the CD. Haven't stopped listening to it since: the lyrics are insightful, the melodies catching, and these guys have great voices. Added bonus, it's good to play all the way through, so you can put it on repeat.

4 out of 5 stars BROADWAY: The formative years.......2004-09-30

An essential collection for libraries and archives. Many of these shows have never been recorded in any other format but these light opera company medleys of "vocal gems." These antique 78-RPM discs are the predecessors of today's original cast recordings.

The years covered in this set show how European style operettas wer slowly giving way to a more jazz-oriented American musical comedy style. Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, and Sigmund Romberg (among others) were setting the stage for the modern American musical.

Listeners should be aware that all the recordings in this set date from the "acoustic" period of recording and have limited range. The metal horns that collected the sound and cut it into wax discs were not ideal for soloists and worked best with brass and percussion. The shellac surfaces of the pressed records had a hissing sound and the steel needles often distorted the music. The few pressings that have survived in playable condition are gathered here, but be aware these are recordings nearly 100 years old!

Those I haven't daunted are in for a treat, for once you get past the antique sound you discover a wealth or musical material and a glimpse into a Broadway very different from what it would eventually become.

Album Description

Road Movies is a collection of nine compositions primarily recorded live in the studio. It is the first release featuring the powerful rhythm section of Bill Rieflin and Fred Chalenor who lend a more propulsive, focused, and dynamic element to the group. Hence, Road Movies is sometimes intense, other times playful, often beautiful, and always a fascinating listening experience.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Primal Complexity.......2004-01-14

"Road Movies" by the quintet (in this aggregation) fronted by soundscape explorer Jeff Greinke requires some effort on the listener's part. Each song morphs through various stages, sometimes delving into dissonance, before emerging again in a more or less similar frame of reference.

The musicians throw themselves into creating a frothy mix that swirls and pulsates, they use their instruments creatively, interjecting a snippet, a snarl, or a pulse that somehow holds the center together. A concave of equals, this quintet lays down some superb grooves and then wobbles away, almost as if seeing just what they can get away with. (This music sounds great through headphones and makes a great energizer while recreating budget tables in InDesign.)

Sometimes the eclecticism renders sections of a track nearly (for now) unlistenable, but an amazing rhythm section not only propels the action but keeps it all solid. The trumpet may be the most distinct part of this sound, sometimes muted, sometimes wailing, sometimes crying. Guitarist Dennis Rea, the only coconspirator held over from an earlier session released by Land, plies his trade with some rather unusual effects, not shoving his way to the front, but not easy to miss either. Mr. Greinke, the wizard in this enclave, conjures up various electronic samples, rhythms, effects, and voices (which sound a whole lot like Gollum), sort of like a caffeinated Brian Eno might.

An infectious primal complexity exists here, and if these songs were broken out into separate tracks, they would no doubt find a way to reassemble themselves and proceed to get things revved up once more.

4 out of 5 stars Still Growing.......2002-09-07

This is a CD that keeps growing. On the first few listens, my reaction was along the lines of, "OK, this is good; I like it." But as I kept on moving into the CD, I found more and more underneath the surface. More than a year later I find myself still listening intensely. What at first seemed like funky melodic jazz has revealed itself to be very complex and fascinating. Just a wonderful recording.

Being a lifelong Roy Orbison fan, I knew that Bill Dees was his co-writer on many of his greatest hits in the 1960's, and that Dees had even been in the Big O's traveling band at one time. So I was interested in hearing how he'd handle these songs, almost all of which are familiar to Orbison's fans. This is really a good album; Dees is more than credible on these songs, yet never tries to copy Orbison. I've been playing this album over and over again; it's one of those "left field" finds that occasionally comes along. I was not familiar with the songs "Saturday Night at the Movies" or "So This is Love" although they are said to be Orbison collaborations.

11-track CD from 2006.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Americana with Brit-pop roots.......2007-03-31

Minibar continues to straddle their UK origins and adopted California home. On this third CD the balance continues to tilt towards roots-rock, with the oft-mentioned Wallflowers and Wilco still being relevent comparisons; the Wallflowers' Rami Jaffee even turns up on Hammond organ for a pair of tracks. But even with their twangy guitars and rasp-and-whisper vocals providing a blend of rock, country, and soul, there's still an underpinning of Brit power-pop in the dense melodies and harmonies. The latter is highlighted on "Wide Open," thick with vocals and guitars reminiscent of Teenage Fanclub.

After a major label release for Universal and an indie on Foodchain, the band has issued this one on their own, distributing it through CD Baby and at their shows (including an upcoming tour backing Pete Yorn). The opening "Things I Left Behind" catalogs the abandoned jetsam of the indie experience in a travelogue of lost clothes, bandmates, LPs and experiences strewn through the years. On the flipside, "Can I Call You A Cab?" lingers over the physical and emotional remains of a relationship, pondering how to move on. The dissolute closer, "In the Strings," mulls the same quandary, but with a sense that 'goodbye' is the only answer.

The band's rhythm battery has the bouncy snap of a well-honed pop band, but with enough swing to give it soul. Simon Petty's voice defines the band's sound, with a rasp that sits perfectly among (rather than on top of) the band's mix of acoustic and electric guitars. Minibar may have missed the broad commercial window for their brand of rock (although Americana radio should eat this up), but those who love beautifully produced pop with twangy edges should check this one out. 3-3/4 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. 5 out of 5 stars Music from the movies and other romantic melodies.......2004-08-06

If you're a fan of easy listening music and like the Great American Songbook (Porter, Gershwin etc.) you'll love this cd. Tony Osborne is a very talented pianist whose cocktail piano style really comes through on many of the tracks here. My favorite is Kurt Weill's "Speak Low" with a beautiful arrangement by Tony which is perfect for dancing, closely followed by his versions of That Old Black Magic and Younger Than Springtime.
