Brain
Editorial Reviews
From ClassicsToday.com
Was Dennis Brain the greatest horn player ever? No argument from me. It's hard to imagine a more consummate master of any instrument or a more thoroughly developed musician, and his performances on this disc provide ample evidence of his prodigious artistry in something he especially loved--chamber music. Although he could have adopted and owned an exclusive role as virtuoso soloist, Brain chose to devote much of his time to performing in the more or less equal-partner settings offered by trios, quartets, and quintets, and in works composed for his particular skills, such as Britten's incomparable Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings. There's a special poignancy to the three selections that open the program: the Beethoven Quintet and the pieces for horn and piano by Dukas and Marais were recorded at the 1957 Edinburgh Festival concerts just one week before Brain's death while driving back to London. He was 36, and like tenor Fritz Wunderlich, who died of accidental causes at the same age (in 1966), the world was deprived of a great artist at the peak of his powers.Brain's performance of Dukas' ravishing little frolic, Villanelle, is nothing less than sensational. It's not just a stream of formidable leaps and flashy runs, but, responding to his very enthusiastic audience, Brain finds room for subtle refinements and delivers a clinic in breath control, phrasing, and articulation within the context of a piece that's already devilishly difficult. Similarly, in the horn entrance in the Andante of the Mozart quintet--this work and the Brahms Trio were recorded in BBC's London studios six months earlier--Brain spins a strand of pure gold out of Mozart's elegantly simple theme. It's a small gesture but it's borne of a rare and intense musicality. The Brahms, in which Brain is joined by partners Max Salpeter (violin) and Cyril Preedy (piano), shows three musicians in complete communicative harmony, as energetically, intently involved in the performance as we can imagine. The live concert sound really does give us a sense of being there that August evening--and not only because of coughs (politely kept to breaks at ends of movements) or clapping. The piano is a bit tinny on top and the balances aren't consistent, but these turn out to be very minor artifacts; the studio recordings are not balanced any better (the strings in the Mozart are a bit stifled), but again, your ear immediately adapts. Brain fans will need this.

"I've Been Here And I've Been There/ And I've Been In Between".......2007-07-20
One can only imagine what it was like to hear King Crimson's debut album back in 1969 (unless you're at least 38 years old, I guess. Okay, I probably I could have picked a better sentence to start this review. Moving on...). In the Court of the Crimson King was a bold, dramatic statement, an uncomprimising record that seamlessly combined hard rock (in the 60s sense of the word. Think Blue Cheer and Cream) with psychedelia and elements of jazz and high-minded poetic grandeur. The eye-popping cover art and suite-style song structures sealed the deal, and a new style of music was born: Progressive rock. Indeed, just about every act that has ever been labled "prog," from Pink Floyd to Yes to Jethro Tull and onward through the likes of Radiohead and the Mars Volta can trace the basis of their sound back to the 'Crim's first record. Robert Fripp's slashing guitar chords and nimble melodies bridged the gap between hevy metal and art rock (before either style was really a full-fledged genre, Black Sabbath and the Velvets notwithstanding), while multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald gave the music a jazzy, textured complexity, weather he was playing the flute, the vibes, or the mellotron, and Greg Lake's vocals were quintessential prog: Technically acomplished, dramatic, and high-minded. Michael Giles' drumming picked up where Fripp's guitar left off, spanning the (not all that wide) space between rock and jazz. Topping the whole shebang off were Peter Sinfield's lyrics, which were abstract and poetic in the extreme, a set of textures and images rather than coherent statements.
But you probably want to know if the music's good. Well, here's the deal: No matter how good a progressive rock band is (and believe me, King Crimson were very, very good), they (pretty much) inevitably succumb to a few pitfalls. The most common is pretention. On this particular record, the most obvious victim of that malady is "Epitaph." The song's eight minutes don't produce a single memorable melody, and Sinfield's lyrics are obtuse in the extreme. They amble through a series of references to men being "torn apart/ with nightmares and with dreames" and "the iron gates of fate" without producing a single good line. It doesn't help that Lake seems to think he's singing scripture, stuffing each sylable with forced drama and unreasonably present passion. The song does have a sort of lumbering majesty (created, pretty much, by sheer force of will), but it's far from a classic. And its typically bloated length insures that it'll overstay its welcome. And then there's the notorious "Moonchild," which features a ten-minute instrumental "freak-out" section, the only truly interesting aspect of which is its odd quietness. Otherwise, it's every bit as overblown and indulgent as the very worst of 60s sound "experiments."
Otheer than that, though, this is a really great listen. My personal favorite track is the achingly beautiful "I Talk To The Wind," a haunting dreamscape with some of Sinfield's most poignant lyrics. The chorus shows off the subtleties of Lake's considerable voice, as he twists his vocal chords over and around the words, enunciating them with an uncanny grace and power. Good stuff. In a similar vein, the first two minutes or so of "Moonchild" (pre freak-out) are a gorgeous accoustic rumination, full of imagery and joyous sound. Of course, there's also the eternal "21st Century Schizoid Man," which foreshadows Rush, only without the nerdiness. Fripp's brutal, slashing bar chords fuse with McDonald's white-hot trumpet and Giles' thundering drums to form the ideal bed for one of Lake's most uncharacteristic and awesome vocal performances ever. He spits pure venom, snarling the lyrics (a rush of fiery, apocalyptic imagery) with menace and boundless energy. The song then breaks off into an awesome intrumental section, which sees Fripp and McDonald spitting melodies at eachother. It's a lava-spewing jam that dazzles the listener with its polymelodic ferocity, its shape shifting intensity. Crank it up, dude. And then there's the title track, which closes the proceedings with a burst of endearing bombasm (that is almost certainly not a word, but I can't think of a noun form of "bombastic") and shape-shifting insanity.
So, the end result is one of the coolest debuts of the sixties, a fantastic rock album, an introduction to some really gifted musicians, and the Rosetta Stone of prog. Neat!
Whimsical Progresive Rock.......2007-07-17
The debut album of King Crimson is one of their finest (though not their best; see Red if you want their top recording). This is the only Crimson album that features Greg Lake (of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer fame) on lead vocals. Although there are only five tracks, each one is rather lengthy and showcases the hallmarks of progressive rock as a whole.
My favorite two tracks are 21st Century Schizoid Man and The Court of the Crimson King, the first and last tracks respectively. Both are epic progressive songs, and are essential for any progressive rock fan; well worth the price of admission for this album.
Back in the day.......2007-06-28
I had a fairly adequate stereo which was centered on a Thorens transcription turntable with an excellent stylus. It always cheered me up to hear this album played at moderate to somewhat loud volume levels. I won't get into the progressive rock chicken and egg debate, for I also appreciate many of the other groups mentioned but KC has a very special place in my hierarchy of rock bands. They made several other good recordings, again duly noted in several reviews but I always have liked this one the best.
For those who have not heard this I would suggest attempting to hear part of it at least prior to buying as I realize this particular genre of rock can be considered an acquired taste.
Sophisticated progressive rock!.......2007-06-24
I knew this album of course before buying it, but it really amazes you when you listen to the whole thing song by song in your home stereo.
Let me join in the chorus of praise for this album, one of the greatest prog rock albums ever...........2007-06-12
This is arguably one of the greatest debuts in rock history (alongside The Velvet Underground and Nico). It is an almost perfect album, a feat that doesn't happen very often. Every song is so beautifully written, crafted, sequenced, and performed by some of the greatest musicians the rock world has ever heard or seen. The starter, 21st Century Schizoid Man, is amazingly intricate. It's one of the best songs from Crimson's library, and the middle section is blistering in its intensity. The quieter songs (just about the rest of the album) are so mellow, moving, and haunting, with lyrics (courtesy of prog rock's greatest lyricist, Pete Sinfield) that still hold up today. There are only 5 songs on the album (all running epic length), but they're pretty much perfect. The only one that gives me a slight problem is Moonchild. The last 10 minutes of the song (after a beautiful introduction) are kind of aimless. But then, maybe a few more listens, and the song will finally kick in. This is one of my favorite albums ever.

Don't Confuse Him with His Dad!.......2007-07-18
Just saw Fictionplane open for the Police in Cleveland. They were amazing!! Had no idea lead was Sting's son until just before the show. He shouldn't be judged on that fact though. He is a talent all his own. He totally rocked out on the bass and his voice has tremendous range and tone. The drummer is just as awesome. (Stuart Copeland was obviously a huge influence) Two Sisters was great live. As was "My Daddy's Money". After seeing them open I look forward to their very own tour soon. I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a great new sound.
AMAZING sound!.......2007-07-11
Saw Fiction Plane in Denver, opening for The Police, and was completely impressed! Bought the CD; had no idea the lead singer was Sting's son. His music stands on its own merit -- good stuff! I can't wait to see what this group does next. I've been a Police/Sting fan for decades, but my teen sons prefer Fiction Plane. I can be happy with both! ;)
Saw them live last week!.......2007-07-10
Awesome band, nice to have another alternative sound CD to my collection. They opened for The Police last week in Chicago, all together an awesome concert, I even got their autographs on my ticket stub after they performed! I hope they stick around for awhile!
FICTION PLANE Launches Forward.......2007-06-29
Fiction Plane's third outing is an excellent snapshot offering a glimpse into the mind and soul of a struggling rock band in an unforgiving musical environment. The album is a jolting departure from the tortured serenity of Bitter Forces And Lame Race Horses, but not quite as hungry or vivacious as their debut Everything Will Never Be Okay. Unlike the majority of today's complacent rock artists, Fiction Plane is actively evolving, rather than resting comfortably in a self-imposed niche. Dropping down to a three-piece, the sobering atmosphere offered by former member Dan Brown is sparingly employed in the few songs written prior to his departure ("It's A Lie", "Drink", "Presuppose" and "Fake Light From The Sun"). This leaves ample room for the remaining troopers to tighten their sound, experiment with new sonic devices and create an album that reflects the members both as individuals and as a fierce artistic unit.
The album begins with an energetic rock track, "Anyone", that challenges the notion of traditional song structure; in that it doesn't end as much as it invites the listener in and almost too quickly ends without resolution. Joe Sumner's bass behavior taunts the listener by foreshadowing the song's chorus during the verse parts and follows the vocals during the actual chorus. Denying stereotypical closure allows the cynical anthem "Death Machine" to appropriately express itself; sneak up and slap you square in the face. Immediately, you get a sense that the band has musically progressed. Throughout the album, Seton Daunt's guitar versatility provides a wealth of sonic experiences. He ranges from extraterrestrial reverberations and guitar manipulations that wouldn't be out of place on a Yes, Porcupine Tree, Led Zeppelin or Dream Theater album to Edge-like rock guitar god prowess; all the while providing an energetic backdrop complementing Sumner's angst-laden croon-wails and Pete Wilhoit's dexterous, jazz-like percussive syncopation affectation.
It's true; it is decidedly difficult to nail down any one band with which to compare Fiction Plane as a point of reference. At times, they portray the heartrending ability of U2, and at others, they provoke the conventions of the archetypal alternative rock act. And in some instances, including the rousing "Death Machine" and near-belligerent "Presuppose", the band summons a bit of the pogo-instilling voracity of Red Hot Chili Peppers or Jane's Addiction. But it is through the somber `Everyman' outlook radiating from tracks like "Drink" and "Fake Light From The Sun" that I feel the true Fiction Plane emerges. These two songs, while ballad-like and slow-tempo, echo the sentiments of fear, isolation, rejection and guilt within us all. This is the charm of Fiction Plane; rather than being vapidly inconsistent, they continuously challenge the listener in a kaleidoscope of sound, not wholly unlike one of their longtime influences, Mr. Bungle. Ultimately, Left Side of the Brain is an album not to be taken at face value, for it is more than a collection of songs from yet-another-alt-rock-band. It is not 100% deadpan seriousness, nor is it completely tongue-in-cheek frivolity. It is an aural landscape riddled with multi-hued musical designs tempered by a lyrical illustration grounded in anxiety and possibility.
They deserve success.......2007-06-28
I am lucky enough to have friends who went out and found this CD for me b/c I enjoyed the "2 Sisters" song. I listened to the whole CD and I like the songs on the album MORE than the song they played on the radio. I especially like "It's a lie", "Cold Water Symmetry" and "Cross the line". This album is the first CD I've had in years b/c I have an iPod and use iTunes...even I have worn out the CD. It's everywhere- my iPod, my car, my cell phone as ringtones...I'm usually not like that! I've told everyone I know to buy this album and once I let them listen to my CD, they do. So let's get more people on board w/ Fiction Plane!

Hundreds of compilation recordings have been thrust on the market in recent years on the theory that classical music makes a nice, non-threatening accompaniment to everything from working out to making love. And here we have one compilation promising to make your baby smarter. It's offensive enough that the music featured on these compilations is spliced up so that the most you hear of any work is a single movement; what's really annoying is the poor quality of so many of the featured performances. So it is some consolation that the artists here include such 20th-century legends as the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell and the Budapest String Quartet with Mieczyslaw Horszowski. Of course if these folks were alive, one can imagine their violent objection to this presentation of their work. --Gwendolyn Freed

Build Baby's Brain through Classics Vol 1.......2006-07-25
I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though, and purchased a used set for my Grandson.
Wonderful stimulating music for baby.......2006-06-23
I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start.
Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational stimulation of a young mind is a powerful indicator that the child will be more advanced than the average child.
Music is not just notes played. Music--real music--is everything. Though the music of today will fade, classical music will always be around because it is classic. It fits no matter what era you place it in. There is always a home for it. The artists are timeless just as the beautiful melodies are.
I certainly believe that babies who listen to music will become more familiar with and more easily understand music and instruments. Therefore, they will be quicker of mind. It is just a fact that people who play instruments are usually of higher intelligence.
I don't think that people are destined to be stupid or geniuses. I believe it is a question of environment. I feel I'm a great mother but I haven't done everything I could have been doing to help my son's mind expand as an infant. Now that he is a toddler (18 months) I am teaching him to read and exposing him to the magic of classical music in hopes that it will help mold him and set him apart from the rest.
Minds are trainable. You just have to work at it. This CD compiled of beautiful pieces composed by instrumental geniuses will help you do just that.
The greatest CD!!.......2006-01-17
I received this CD free when I had my first baby and it instantly became my fav cd of all time. I have it on my computer and I had another copy made because I just can not imagine not having it.
And as for the comment that the music has nothing to do with intellingence, you stand alone on that front. Besides, what does it hurt? It's great, soothing music and the babies enjoy it.
Forget baby, it's mine?.......2005-09-01
I love my child, but the first time I heard this CD, It immediately went from her recorder to mine. I take it practically everywhere I go. I know it's technically "Her" CD, but the selections are so soothing; and you need that type of comfort when stuck in traffic. Honestly, we both enjoy it - and I'm glad someone thought enough to give it as a gift.
Love this CD--why all the complaints?.......2004-08-30
I'm not sure what people were expecting when they purchased this. For one thing it tells you exactly what is on the CD. Its not a mystery!! If you buy it on amazon it has listed every title on it so I"m not sure about the people who said they were dissapointed because they already own those titles. Obviously you should glance at the list of titles on this CD if you have a large classical collection already. However if you don't already have a classical collection this is by far excellent .I'll be honest and admit I listen to one of the volumes daily regardless of who is in the room. It's marketed for babies but it is really for anyone. There are SO many classical pieces out there. What they have done is to take the best of the best and also the ones that are known to appeal to babies. For some reason many reviewers thing they just took a random sampling of classical music. In reality they have put together those that appeal most to children. I can tell you that my 1 year old daughter actually dances to these. She really likes them a lot. I consider the whole collection a must have for any household.

Album Description
Funkadelic's ultimate early classic (from 1971) remastered from the original masters for the first time in 15 years. "Maggot Brain" is rated by, amongst others, Mojo Magazine as an all-time classic. Their critics voted it the fourth greatest guitar album ever, beaten only by Jimi Hendrix and the Who. Guitarist Eddie Hazel's playing on the title track is nothing short of stunning. This 2005 reissue includes the original seven track album plus a bonus alternate mix of the album's title track. It also includes "Whole Lot Of BS", the non album B-side of the album's third single, "Hit It And Quit It", and the 45 "I Miss My Baby" recorded by US Music with Funkadelic, a copy of which recently sold among collectors for $150. The booklet includes in-depth sleeve notes by funk expert Dean Rudland, with details of the history of the band and this recording. The package includes a full color reproduction of the original artwork, contemporary memorabilia and copies of advertisements. Westbound U.S.

Amazing Guitar Work.......2007-02-02
I didn't realy know what to expect when I first heard this album in the early 70's. What realy surprized me was the Guitar solos. The best lead riff on this album can be heard on a number called Super Stupid. It's a gem. I must have replayed this song a million times just to hear that lead riff. This album contains a lot of heart and a whole lotta soul. Eddie Hazel is amazing.
Funkadelics Maggot Brain is a CLASSIC.......2007-01-11

Interpsychestellar funk........2006-01-29
If Hawkwind had listened to nothing but Herbie Hancock's Blue Note records, then I have a hunch that they would've sounded like Funkadelic or like Miles Davis, ca. 1975. Either way, they would have been just as good -- only much, much different. But the differences between heavy Funkadelic and electric Miles are not that many or that great. The point is that Funkadelic cherry-picks elements from rock, funk, jazz, heavy metal, and space rock, and they do so very, very well. Unlike records that simply sample a diverse number of styles or genres, this record seemlessly combines, mixes, and matches those genres. The end result is a wonder to behold, and so this record should appeal to many people with different musical tastes. If the Jimi Hendrix Experience had covered CAN, then they would have sounded like this. Soul music meets Krautrock. While that may sound contrived, it's not so difficult to imagine how sensuous would be just such a sound.

What Hath God Wrought?.......2007-04-02
Well ...
If you're reading this, it's likely that you have already have already heard about Dennis Brain and in particular the famous passages where his rapid playing left a generation of listeners shaking their heads in astonishment.
This is how everyone first hears of him: a sort of circus act with lots of notes but without the great tone that distinguishes really good horn playing. This first impression is strengthened by stories about the strange, narrow-bore horn he played and by the sound of occasionally clipped staccato notes and a tight low range. As someone once said, "My faults, according to this calculation, are heavy indeed!"
But in Brain's case as well as in Fitzwilliam Darcy's, closer acquaintance reverses the impression altogether.
At odds with the idea of frenetic speed, Brain produces some of the most sensitive phrase shaping you'll find in any musical recordings. His effortless mastery gives many passages a relaxed feeling that suggests he is playing them a third lower than written. His recordings of hornists' two signature pieces -- Strauss's first horn concerto and Mozart's third -- are both gentler than any other recording in the catalogue. He plays the Mozart third at a surprisingly slow tempo and turns the first page of the Strauss, which most players muscle up on, into a lullaby.
In the middle and upper ranges, Brain's tone, while unobtrusive, is so full and pure that many people say they have a tendency to block out everything else and just listen to that sound. That may not seem an asset for ensemble playing, but his accompaniment playing was wonderful and his reliability a huge asset for his colleagues. The expectation of perfection became so other-worldly that, on the inevitable day when Brain finally flubbed a passage in rehearsal, the always mischievous Sir Thomas Beecham stopped the orchestra, put his baton down, and just said, "Thank God."
Brain's trills, lip trills in particular, are uniquely clear, and at the end of the day, yes, there is that fabulously rapid articulation that leaves listeners wondering whether they were dreaming what they just heard.
This playing all emanated from a personality that was apparently of the utmost simplicity and modesty. Alan Civil had the last word on this forty years ago in his remembrance of Brain on the jacket of "The Art of Dennis Brain" album (Seraphim 60040, if you can find it). Brain's early, accidental death strikes one the same way as Beethoven's deafness does: a hint that higher forces are at play.
No, this is not a review of Brain's Mozart. It is an invitation to begin an acquaintance. Dig in!
World class music.......2007-01-10
By far the best rendition of the Mozart Horn Concertos ever produced. David Brain must be the "El Supremo" of horn playing. An added bonus on this CD is the Quintet in E flat for piano and wind and with Colin Horsley as the pianist is an added treat for New Zealanders. A "MUST HAVE" for all lovers of Mozart.
I Wish Dennis Brain Had Been Born So That His Performing Powers Peaked in 1995.......2006-05-17
I purchased The LP in 1953 and proceeded to 'wear it out.' No, I have not yet thrown it out.
However, I have had the good fortune to find myself a resident of the San Francisco Peninsula since 1970 and, in time, have had the privilege to make the acquaintance of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, who perform one of each of their annual subscription concert series locally here in Palo Alto.
In 1992 they recorded the Horn Concertos with Lowell Greer performing them on the natural (valveless) horn, the instrument which was in use at the time Mozart composed them. Given the temperamental nature of the the instrument, the recording is doubtless a composite of many 'takes.' It is also a breathtaking performance and is now my 'standard.' See:

A Master Performs a Master.......2005-08-20
I'm not much of a classical music reviewer. I've been exposed to a lot of music, but I tend to stick to favorite performances, so I don't have the depth needed to really be authoritative. Except perhaps for oboe, and that's because I grew up listening to John De Lancie and Marcel Tabuteau - and once you hear really good, you know what's what. This album is a similar case. Dennis Brain wasn't a 'good' French horn player, he was probably the best that there ever was or will be.
I've heard a lot of performance horn players. All you have to do to see what I mean is to wander through this website and pick off performances of the first movement of Horn Concerto No. 2 in E flat and you will discover that Brain never blurbles a note, and every attack in the Allegro Maestoso is pinpoint. He is technically and tonally perfect and couples that with a superb musical sensibility. It was one of the great musical tragedies that he died at the age of 36.
Something to keep in mind is that when Mozart wrote these works for his good friend (and cheesemonger) Joseph Leutgeb, the French horn was a very limited instrument. Many of the notes were reached by stopping the bell to some degree, which affected volume and intonation. Mozart wrote to take advantage of Leutgeb's expertise at this, and Dennis Brain chooses to maintain this effect rather than just play his modern instrument with no thought to the past.
These compositions cover a fair range of time. Number 2(K.417) is really the earliest (1783). And the incomplete No. 1 (K.412) is really the last (1791). The best though, in both my mind and Mozart's is the Quintet in E flat for piano & wind. Mozart was a master in using instrument groupings in novel and powerful fashion and this is no exception.
EMI has remastered this CD over their previous release, which enhances clarity, and makes it easier to hear Dennis Brain's considerable finesse. I own their first release and the difference in clarity makes it worth finding this edition. But even the duller production of the 1997 is enjoyable. It you want a good selection of Dennis Brain's work on one CD this is an excellent buy.
Mozart: Horn Concert.......2005-08-14
Great recordings of the century, and that is what it is.
Herbart von Karajan conducting, and Dennis Brain on horn tells it all; a wonderful rich music experience are waiting for you.
In my ears its probably one of the best recordings ever made of the horn concert. And even though its from the mid 50`s it comes in a wonderful remastered CD.
The CD comes with a very good booklet in English; telling the story behind the record.
I highly recommend this album

The Funniest Ever.......2006-08-25
This is the funniest stand up performance of all time by the funniest man of all time. The subject matter is varried and clean. Check it out.
Clean Humor.......2003-01-21
It is unfortunate that this is Sinbad's only comedy CD, especially since he's done several HBO specials. Sinbad's brand of comedy is clean and many will find it extremely funny. This CD deals with things like Mike Tyson as a substitute teacher, spanking your kids, children in general, and more. The songs included didn't do anything for me, but that's just me.
Bottom line: a worthy addition to any comedy collection!
Keepin It Clean.......2002-06-27
I perfer the HBO special that he had and if it ever gets back out on video/dvd I will get it.
Sinbad:Funny As Ever.......2000-06-13
I have always been a fan of Sinbad's comedy and humor. I was a little bit worried purchasing this CD though. Sinbad was great in his concerts and movies, but I was afraid his humor would not transfer to audio means.
I was not disappointed! Hearing Sinbad is almost as good as seeing him. His humor is so great, because he does not have to be vulgar to be funny. The CD is full of original as well as concert material. Sinbad even performs a rap song on marriage called "Brain Damaged". If you love Sinbad, you will definitely love this CD...

Good for study.......2002-06-24
There are two ways that one can listen to this: one, mixed in at random with other stuff and two, by itself in a deliberate manner.
As a collection of "song length" compositions, this is a nice way to get some classical music into one's collection. It would be a good gift for a student. Mixed with other tracks, it's refreshing to listen to. I don't that you get the full effect of this CD when listening to it this way.
Ideally, this is a CD to listen to in a deliberate way. Listen to it when you first get to work in the morning, and are organizing your day. Put this is a study center for students. The power is this CD is in repeated listening and to create a "sense of space."
Gain focus and clarity.......2001-03-05
This CD had a tremendous effect on my ability to concentrate on my work and improved my ability to articulate both written and verbal communication. Listen to it on your way to work and you will have a renewed sense of clarity about many things.
When You Need to Focus, This Will Definitely Help!.......2000-03-17
I've been using this title for several months, and have found that it really helps me to focus in on the task at hand and get it taken care of easily. The fact that the music is wonderfully arranged and played is just an added bonus!

Tune your brain with Mozart.......2006-11-16
I put the cd music on my I-pod and listen to it while I study.
Great first time clasical experience.......2006-07-02
Wanted to try the "Mozart Effect" on my teenage niece who only listened to rap and teen-pop. She said the first time she heard this it was like electrical sparks lighting up her brain. She loved it.
I am already familiar with classical music. This compilation is very well chosen, edited and engineered. There are some less than common selections, so even if you already have many symphonies, there will be some different music on this CD. Nothing is too long. The tempo is both mildly relaxing and stimulating at the same time. Good for studying or thinking.
Excellent choice!.......2001-10-28
I bought this CD to play in my Kindergarten classroom. It is great for transition time - I turn it on to signal the children that it is time to clean up and meet me on the rug. They clean up, sit on the rug and close their eyes for a minute. This really works to calm them down and they seem to like the music. This CD is a must have!!!
Serendipitous Treasure.......2000-11-01
I bought this CD just to have some classical music to listen to while driving across the deserts of the western US (classical radio stations are, alas, not too plentiful in rurual areas). It was on sale and looked like it would be reasonably good (how could one go too wrong with Mozart anyhow?). It also featured several selections I did not have on other CD's, so it would be a good addition to the Mozart section, I figured.
I had no idea a 'budget' CD could be this good. Whether or not this actually tunes your brain as the producers claim, the music is just stellar. Mozart was one of history's great composers, but the selection of works here is just astonishing in scope, composition, and variety. The performances and recording quality match the quality of the music too. This CD works as a "Mozart conoisseur's" collection.
While these are not Mozart's best known or most popular selections (The Marriage of Figaro, Ein Klein Nachtmuzik, etc. have to be located elsewhere), every song on this CD is a masterpiece -- living up to the descriptive line from "Amadeus" ('..Displace one note and you would only mar perfection...').
Even if you already have a sizaeable classical collection, this CD is a very worthwhile addition. At a bargain price, it's a real deal--almost a steal.

Unknown Mott.......2006-08-16
Even most Mott the Hoople afficianados haven't heard this one. The high point is Sweet Angeline, which was a concert regular that Mott played for many years. A snarky, cynical rocker that has Ian Hunter comparing his girlfriend's mouth to a snake. Not sure that I get it, but it works. The lead song - Death May Be Your Santa Claus - gets kudos for the title alone. The rest of the songs are just so-so. All in all, not Mott's strongest work, but you can see glimpses of the genius that Ian Hunter would show on later work like All the Young Dudes.
Brain Capers roars with energy.......2006-05-10
The songwriting is incredible, and the performances are more passionate and explosive than 99% of what passed for rock and roll at the time.
Mott at their best!.......2004-11-05
I really miss this band, though since disbanding individual members do turn up from time to time. Brain Capers is their BEST album. This is pre-Dudes and just has a lot more power than their later work. And is sans Bowie's influence. "Death May Be Your Santa Claus" is one of the 100 all time best rock and roll songs. Ian Hunter is pure raw performer on Brain Capers. If I could only own one Mott album this would be it. This is the Mott the Hoople at their best!
One of the great rock'n'roll train wrecks..........2003-05-22
As influential as The Beatles, Stones or any other 60's band you care to mention, Mott the Hopple helped give birth to punk. And they did it without becoming too popular. Brain Capers sold so poorly that the band considered packing it in (in fact there were a number of demos for the next Bowie produced album recorded during this session available on the boxed set). Ian Hunter, Mick Ralphs, Verden Allen, Dale Griffin and Overend Watts bulldozed through the history of rock 'n' roll and decided to relieve themselves all over it.
From the kooky, inspired and creepy Death May Be Your Santa Claus to the soulful Sweet Angeline, Mott never got better than this (although they did come darn close with the slicker, more melodic All The Young Dudes and Mott). Both Dudes and Mott expanded on the band's sound and songwriting skills but this is where they really hit their stride.
Hunter's The Journey despite its pretensions works because of the soulful and heartfelt playing and singing. It would characterize both their best and worst (The Hopple anyone?)albums.
Before we was glam.......2003-03-29
Call it proto-punk or proto-metal or whatever you want, but Mott the Hoople's fourth album is all about intense rock'n'roll. They somehow managed to be both melodic and articulate while delivering a sonic pummeling that often bordered on sheer chaos. Why this band never broke out of obscurity is one of the great mysteries of the 70's. "Death May Be Your Santa Claus", apart from having one of the best titles of all time, is the sort of rocker that classic rock radio would be built on if it had any taste or sense of self-respect. "The Journey" is an 8 minute epic that, gasp, has a melodic hook AND builds to an electrifying, shiver-inducing climax. "The Moon Upstairs" will split your skull, and "Sweet Angeline" will have you singing along before it even gets to the chorus. Quite simply, one of the most undeservedly unheralded albums of the 70's.

Music in the Learning Environment - YES!.......2003-04-09
I recently used this CD as part of my master's degree research project and thesis. I used this music in a reading comprehension study and a hallway behavior study. I also used Halpern's Accelerated Learning music, and Creed's heavier rock music. To summarize: 75% of students who listened to these classical pieces before reading scored an average of 6.7% higher on reading comprehension tests than when they did not. Hallway behavior improved by 33% while this CD was played. In contrast, misbehavior nearly doubled with the rock music. The tempo, timbres and form of this music seemed most effective in the middle school environment I used for this study. I don't usually leave reviews, but thought this was noteworthy, especially for other educators.
Helps Me Learn Complex Information Almost Effortlessly........2000-04-07
I have a job which requires me to learn complex information to keep pace with technological changes. I've never had an easier time quickly learning and retaining the data now that I've started using this CD. The music is wonderful to listen to even when I'm not studying. The performances are a bit different from the way the music might ordinarily be recorded, an added bonus. I hope this label produces additional titles in the near future, I now own six and want more!
