If Copland's own recordings of his music have the warmth of a soft summer night, those by Leonard Bernstein convey the blazing heat of noon. In his later remakes of several of these scores for Deutsche Grammophon, Bernstein exhibited a tendency toward overly-nuanced readings. But his earlier accounts with the New York Philharmonic, recorded by CBS in the late 1950s and early 1960s, are still incomparable in their vitality and impetus. Bernstein's way with the Western ballets is exuberantly personal and persuasive. He has the ability to move between delicacy and brashness, always getting the gestures right, and he delivers magical characterizations of both scores. The Phiharmonic's playing, while sometimes a bit raw, is confident and rhythmically secure; there is certainly nothing to apologize for here. There is a wonderful sense of immediacy to Bernstein's account of the Appalachian Spring Suite, in which the New Yorkers give a virtuosic account of themselves, playing in a rhythmically incisive fashion that puts Copland's account with the London Symphony in the shadows. The couplings are a mixed bag, however. Bernstein always had the measure of El Salon Mexico, and gives a rousing account of it here. But the so-called Fanfare for the Common Man is lifted from his recording of the Third Symphony; its beginning is not the same as that of the real fanfare. Both recordings have been wonderfully remastered by their original producer, John McClure, and have excellent presence and a palpable sense of atmosphere in the quiet pages. --Ted Libbey

Leonard Bernstein was a friend of Aaron Copland's, and he approaches this music with rare flair and verve--as well as with sympathy and warmth--and, we can assume, with a good idea of the composer's intentions regarding it. This is a classic album, containing several of the works in the essential Copland oeuvre; the sound is not as good as you'll find in a more contemporary recording, but for most listeners the spirit will make up for that. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Customer Reviews:
Classic Bernstein recordings of American music, in best sound.......2006-06-16
Sony's reissue machine tries to entice us to buy some classic Bernstein performances by giving us mid-price, excellent sound, and a jam-packed CD. As Mr. Richman notes below, the main part of this disc appeared in the Bernstein Century series, but two items have been added, Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man and Ives' Unanswered Question, both performed with all of Bernstein's infectious energy and insight.
I also give Sony the benefit of the doubt that their current DSD (Direct Stream Digital) technology is a step ahead of the last improvement, 20-bit SBM (Super Bit Mapping) technology. Who knows for sure?
Anyway, Bernstein and Stern have never been bettered in their 1964 reading of the Barber Violin Concerto. Their secret is twofold: the superb orchestral playing by the NY Phil. at its height (Harold Gomberg's oboe solo that opens the slow movement couldn't be more tender), and Bernstein's unqiue ability to conduct American rhythms. He was both a jazz baby and a swing kid, and it shows even when he is handling the delicate tracery of the concerto's first movement. Stern keeps his tone relatively dry, which is also a good idea when the melody is this luscious.
Gomberg is back center stage for William Schuman's evocative 'To the Old Cause,' a combination of oboe concerto and brooding elegy for the deaths of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy. A cultural era was ending, and Schuman gives dark, painful testimony to it. The same is true for the even darker, jagged 'In Praise of Ben Shahn,' with its rough-hewn brass interjections and turbulent unease. Schuman's idiom dates from the Forties and here is getting its last stand in a moving way.
Once you throw in the Copland and Ives fillers, the net result is a terrific 74 min. memento of Bernstein at his very best and a high-water mark in Aerican music.
Same as "Bernstein Century" Title.......2003-10-02
This recent Sony reissue of the music of American composers Samuel Barber and William Schuman is exactly the same as a CD featured in the "Bernstein Century" series. Included here are Leonard Bernstein and the NYPO's 1971 account of the "Adagio for Strings," 1964 recording of Barber's Violin Concerto, 1968 performance of Schuman's "To Thee Old Cause," and "In Praise of Shahn" from 1970. The music is terrific, but my reason for rewarding only four stars (other than being annoyed at Sony for investing so much energy in a straight reissue with new packaging when so many other classic recordings remain unissued) is this release is obviously aimed at casual fans looking for a good performance of the "Adagio." And boy will they be surprised by the dissonance of the Schuman pieces! This is another Sony reissue that leaves me scratching my head.

Although it has come to be much better known in Copland's arrangement for full orchestra, Appalachian Spring was originally composed for a chamber-sized complement of 13 instruments, the maximum that would fit in front of the stage at the Coolidge Auditorium in the Library of Congress, where Martha Graham's company gave the premiere of the ballet in 1944. Many listeners prefer the more vibrant and homespun sound of this original version, with its intimate expressiveness, to the splashiness and color of Copland's rescoring, brilliant as it is. Here, Copland conducts a hand-picked group of New York freelancers in what must be counted a definitive performance. The playing is energetic and expressive, the sentiment deep but not too sweet. Copland's 1968 account of his Lincoln Portrait, with Henry Fonda as narrator, and 1969 reading of the suite from Billy the Kid round out the disc most satisfactorily. All three recordings are remarkably vivid. --Ted Libbey

Henry Fonda's Reading of Lincoln Portrait............2006-12-16
.....alone makes this cd worth the price. This may say more about me than I like, but I own several versions of Appalachian Spring. It was worth adding one more to the collection just so I could get my hands on Henry Fonda's reading of the Lincoln Portrait. I've listened to almost all of them but this one best captures Lincoln's decency and moral stature. Fonda reads it with great emotion and warmth. When you really want to understand the best of American values this is the place to start.
Wonderful!.......2006-08-10
This was my first exposure to Copland. Copland is the quintessential American composer. His compositions are some of my favorites. As for this verson, Henry Fonda is by far the best orator for The Lincoln Portrait. James Earl Jones comes a close second. If you enjoy good music, you will enjoy this album.
Portrait is closer to how Lincoln would have said it.......2006-07-14
I can appreciate the previous reviewer who felt that Henry Fonda's interpretation of the Lincoln Portrait was a bit bland. I respectfully disagree.
We know from research that Abraham Lincoln was a soft spoken man with a thin reedy voice. His delivery, it has been speculated, would have been firm but with a bit of a down home quality. I believe the late Henry Fonda has the best reading of this text. The versions by Charlton Heston, James Earl Jones and William Warfield are excellent but they all have a dramatic quality that is very unlike Lincoln the man.
I will agree that the mixing on the this recording could have been better, but I still prefer that restrained yet confident sound of Henry Fonda. To me it has the same quality as his "I'll be there" speech at the conclusion of The Grapes of Wrath.
Very moving.
Best versions of Appalachian Spring /Billy the Kid!.......2004-02-14
If I had to choose one Copland album over all others in my collection, this would be the one!
When I purchased this cd many years ago, I hadn't realized at the time that this was the original, longer version of "Appalachian Spring" for chamber orchestra until I first played it, and it totally took me by surprise - what a revelation! It's become both my favorite version and recording of this piece.
The orchestration in "A Lincoln Portrait" is superb, and although the late Henry Fonda's reading does have a certain, peculiar quality to it, it's a vast improvement over the sound of the vinyl.
The "Billy the Kid" suite is absolutely thunderous and intensely psychotic, the BEST version ever recorded, IMHO, with the opening tympani beats guaranteed to shake your speakers and sub-woofers and the house along with it.
Appalachian Spring, the simple version.......2003-08-25
This version of Appalachian Spring is truly the original version. If you are looking for the true American spirit in Copland's music, by all means, buy this cd. Appalachian Spring is already such a simply beautiful piece of music, but when Copland conducts, you can really hear how Copland feels about the piece. I find the simple elegance of this piece inspiring, and this cd has helped me form a good idea of the style Copland would want for when I perform this piece with an orchestra.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent transfer of an older ANALOG recording!.......2003-02-16
This is a tranfer to SACD of an older recording. Yes, it is only 2 channels- stereo. However, on any decent system it has a very natural sound with the ambient information conveyed as only SACD is able! Yes, there is some hiss- an artifact of the analog master. It is not a problem for me. The recording and the performance are great!
Something to note: I have the LP, CD, and SACD of this recording. The LP always had a more natural tonality. The CD was always cleaner (being a digital copy), had a harsher top end, and a limited soundstage. Instruments lost their "roundness" and harmonic flavor on the CD version. The SACD is the ultimate: it has the "roundness", smooth treble, spacial detail, of the LP, and the clean pop-free sound of the cd. Simply amazing!
2 channel SACD.......2002-12-20
I ordered this CD after listening to Appalchian Spring performed at the Symphony. This was the very first SACD I ordered after I got my Pioneer DV-45A. Now, the music is outstanding. It's amazing at how 3 dimensional and wide the music sounds. My dislikes are stronger, however. The CD, though it is an SACD, is only recorded in 2-channels! I ordered this CD expecting to get all 5.1 channels of music. My other major gripe is the amount of background hiss. Being an SACD, I would have expected there to be practically no white noise/hiss on the recording. WRONG! There is quite a bit of the noise that is plainly audible, and you can hear it at every quiet moment of the SACD. The music is outstanding, the performance was great, BUT there are only 2 channels to listen to, and there's way too much unwanted noise for being an SACD! If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased the regular CD version of this and saved 10 bucks.
Great performance, great recording........2001-06-25
This is one of the SACDs that can make anyone a believer in the new format. The performance is top notch to begin with, but it's the quality of the recording that caught my attention, even though I have other good recordings of these pieces. Instruments truly sounded live and spread across a 3 dimensional space. Hall sounds were distinct from the music - you could tell the hall was empty when the recording was made and you could easily time the primary reverbations. Every instrument and distinct sound seemed to exist in its own space. Only complaints are that overall sound is a bit bright, typical of the era of the recording, and the hall reverb was too strong, probably due to the empty space.

Minneapolis Symphony Shines Again.......2005-11-11
This box set of recordings by the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (known today as the Minnesota Orchestra) is a dream come true for anyone who grew up hearing this magnificent group either live or on LP. Listeners cannot help but be impressed by their remarkable clarity, rhythmic vitality, and artful precision (dare I call it the "Minneapolis Sound"?)- especially when you consider that these recordings were made in the 50s and 60s on the stage of Northrup Auditorium at the University of Minnesota.
Antal Dorati had a keen ear for orchestral color, and this collection is a lasting testament to his instincts. Anyone who reveres the old recordings by such conductors as Ormandy, Bernstein, Reiner, Szell, et al., are highly encouraged to check out this collection. The hauntingly exotic "Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee" by Gunther Schuller (commissioned by the Orchestra) is an all-too-rare gem that deserves to be heard - a modern-day "Pictures at an Exhibition".
Dorati carried his concepts of color over to his recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra, as the Stravinsky and Prokofiev selections will attest.
I encourage audiophiles to discover one of those "other" orchestras from "back then". I think it will be a "sound" investmment.
Dorati's MLP Gems Are Back!.......2005-10-03
Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know of my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing, and while the single disc SACD Hybrid titles are unfortunately listed at full-price, it is wonderful to see the various multi-disc sets basically being sold at budget line. With this 5CD reissue, some of Antal Dorati's legendary MLP recordings are restored to the catalog, as all of the original single issue CDs of these titles had all gone out-of-print over the last few years. To illustrate how prized these recordings are by collectors, if you wanted to buy these five titles just a few months ago in the Amazon Marketplace it would have cost you four times the price of this new set! Buying this collection for Dorati's accounts of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Petrouchka alone is worthwhile, as they are two of those works greatest performances. Of course getting memorable recordings of Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan, Death & Transfiguration and the conductor's own Suite from Der Rosenkavalier; Prokofiev's 5th Symphony and Suites from Scythian and Love for Three Oranges; Albeniz' Iberia Suite along with Falla, Moussorgsky and Smetana excerpts; and Gershwin's American in Paris, Copland's Rodeo Dances, and some wild Schuller and Bloch compositions (whew!) is just more to get excited about. Overall, it makes for quite an attractive package -- glorious golden age stereo recordings returned to the catalog at a very reasonable price. Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

"Copland-Again Pleasing to the Ear".......2002-01-29
This work of Copland created in me the what I believe to be the goal of good art: interest in the artist. I am now an Aaron Copland fan solely due to this CD and I now am searching music stores who might carry his work. Majestically melodious as well as quietly grand, Copland's particular style of composing American music is a joy to listen to. I enjoy listening to Copland's music because his music makes me want to listen to his music all the more. Highly recommended for those in love with the composition of music as well as listening to music.
can't top the composer as conductor.......2000-06-02
Although Bernstein may be thought of as the premier conductor of Copland's music, these performances under the baton of the conductor himself are far superior in my humble opinion. In Bernstein's hands, for example, the hoedown from Rodeo is much too fast, Copland draws the music out and instead of cowboy music you have a true masterpiece of classical music. Listen to them consecutively, it is night and day. Same with Fanfare. It's also tough to beat the magnificent William Warfield's version of the Old American Songs, next to a version such as Marilyn Horne's, these (no knock on Ms. Horne) have gravitas and beauty. The sound quality on this disc, especially the tracks played by the LSO recorded at Walthamstow, is nothing short of astonishing, sounding better than the vast majority of modern digital recordings. A must.
From the horse's mouth (so to speak).......2000-05-22
Because I love Bernstein's recordings of Rodeo and Appalachian Spring so much I hesitated to review Copland's own versions conducting his own music. While Bernstein's recordings are rightly legendary, in my opinion these should be too. Bersntein takes some tempos significantly faster (in some cases too fast for me) than Copland, and with Copland I was better able to hear the musical development and the rythmic pulse of the music(listen here to Hoe Down, then compare to Bernstein-the detail is much clearer with Copland). I also think the recorded sound has an edge over Bernstein, with really fine warmth and balance. Toss in what is in my opinion the definitive Old American Songs with William Warfield and it is really hard to find fault here. I once heard that Copland simply could not conduct his own music, but this disc blows that assertion out of the water. It speaks for itself.
Copeland vs. Bernstein versions.......2000-02-16
I have both this CD and Leonard Bernstein's Copeland CD, and much prefer this one. With Copeland conducting, the tempos are more fluid and the orchestration cleanly delineated.

Customer Reviews:
For the great Toscanini, a so-so collection.......2007-05-12
Revelations: the Dinorah Overture, Rustic Wedding Symphony excerpts, Mozart Divertimento and Copland's El Salon Mexico (which I didn't even know he had performed). Disappointments: The Kalinnikov Symphony, which is too fast and stiff in the first movement and, in the second, Toscanini rescores the viola "drone" effect of the opening of the movement for harp which ruins the desired effect. Downers: the inferior music of Bizet's "Jolie Fille du Perth" suite, and that dreadful, boxy Studio 8-H sound, and the Massenet. Delightful surprises: the Sousa marches, especially "Semper Fidelis" which he conducts like a tarantella, also the unidentified chorus on the Dinorah overture (most probably the Westminster Choir, which Toscanini used in those years for his Beethoven performances).
Overall, then, a nice collection that fills in some gaps, but primarily for "complete" collectors only. As an overall album, it's just OK.
