Filippa Giordano

This eponymous album from the Italian singer Filippa Giordano confounds expectations. Released on the classical label Erato, Giordano mixes arias with contemporary songs such as the Ennio Morricone-Roger Waters "Lost Boys Calling" from the 1999 Golden Globe-winning movie The Legend of 1900. Using a conventional orchestra sometimes supplemented by electronic keyboards and occasional drums, the production achieves a slick and glossy chart-friendly sound that will find favor with fans of Whitney Houston and Céline Dion. Key to the album are two versions of "Casta Diva" from Bellini's Norma, between which arias from Samson and Dalila, Tosca, Carmen, and La Traviata sit rather uncomfortably alongside several pop anthems. With the vocal flavor of Broadway and a hint of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the intention seems to be to add contemporary crossover appeal to opera in much the same way that Andrea Bocelli has done with such conspicuous success. It's doubtful that serious opera aficionados will care much for Filippa Giordano, though music lovers in general may well find the album an attractive entry into the sometimes-forbidding world of the classical diva. --Gary S. Understand this album for what it is, and what it is not........2007-02-02
Opera aficianados take note - she is not an opera singer. It is pointless to consider her as one. You might as well snipe at a nasturtium for not being a rose. She is a pop singer. If you are looking for nuanced interpretations of classic bel canto opera, why the heck did you pick this album up in the first place? You know where to look already.
I completely disagree with the opera buffs who say that it is a travesty that she recorded these albums and besmirched the great masters. She did not record this for *you*. She recorded this for listeners of pop music. Have you heard what passes for pop music? Evidently not, or you would realize her albums far surpass everything currently in play... and if that is damning to pop music, well, so it is.
If one person... a single soul... listens to this album and is inspired enough to go out and listen to "the real thing" then Filippa Giordano has done them a great service and made the world a richer place. Opera aficionados are not born knowing and appreciating opera. One must be exposed to the music in the first place. Many people grow up having NEVER heard opera. This sort of album has a chance at being played in venues where Callas and Fleming couldn't get feet in the door. To the uninitiated, opera can seem bewildering and unintelligible, full of unfamiliar conventions. Filippa Giordano uses pop conventions to put these arias in musical terms that pop music lovers can grasp. Melodic familiarity goes miles toward connecting people to the emotional core of an operatic performance. Before you spew venom, consider that you are potentially thwarting a pathway that may lead to genuine appreciation of "real" opera down the pike. Bite your tongue. Go listen to your own recordings of the masters. You are right. They are infinitely more sophisticated. But this album has considerable value despite its flaws, and it wasn't created for you.
Opera Geeks, get a life.......2006-05-05
This is an album by a gifted pop singer singing some beautiful classical arias. Now, opera geeks are going apoplectic that this woman has the temerity to do so. I listen to opera, and I am occasionally relieved to hear CDs like this. It's nice not to hear a singer sounding like several people are tightening her Wagnerian corset so hard that she is expelling air through every orifice in her body. It is not the music that keeps opera unaccessible to everyone except pretentious pseudo-intellectuals (you don't need a Ph.D. to appreciate it). No, what has kept opera out of the mainstream is the constipated sounds too many opera singers make. If you like beautiful music sung well, if not brilliantly, you will like this CD. And for the record, I loathe C?line Dion's and Whitney Houston's music passionately, so don't let the first reviewer's comments dissuade you from this CD.
Distasteful...........2006-03-07
Do Banshees really exist ?. Yes they do.....and this abomination of musical history is proof of this....I cannot believe that a record company actually thought that they would even remotely break even on the sales of this grievous, flavorless, repellent and not to mention nauseous anathema of a recording. Shame on you young lady for destroying what were once, beautiful arias. A sad and unpassionate insult to great musical workmanship....
Not really opera, but fun anyway.......2006-02-03
As previous reviewers have said, "purist" opera fans would probably not consider this album to be opera, but it's still very enjoyable. Filippa Giordano will not likely be cast in a Wagnerian role anytime soon; she has a beautiful voice, but it does sound rather thin at times (she's no Maria Callas or Renee Fleming, in other words). It would be very easy to compare her to those other "(p)opera" divas, Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church, but Filippa's sound is considerably more playful than Sarah's, and more sophisticated than Charlotte's. The highlights of this album are her renditions of "Casta Diva" and "Habanera," and I would recommend it for those two songs alone, but the rest of the album is also very good. This would be a great way to introduce a young person to the genre, as many of the songs could pass for pop songs.
Ummmm...........2005-11-29
Thousand pardons and all, but what on earth is she doing? If she wants to sing like this, fine and well, but why take perfectly fine operatic pieces that are special to some people and absolutely desecrate them by singing them like they are pop?
People who want to sing pop music should not go about advertising themselves as operatic singers, Giordano has the capacity to sing contemp. if she wants, but she obviously has not an operatic voice. If you like people being wormy and stealing from other genres, you will love this cd. If you like opera, you will not.

Filippa.......2007-03-21
Wonderful, absolutely lovely. Whoever wrote "talentless" must be deaf, or tasteless, Filippa is marvelous as always.
This Isn't it.......2007-03-05
Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that all of the glowing reviews posted here were written by Ms. Giordano's producers and lackeys? I believe that there could be a market for pop renditions of the great classical tunes, but this ain't it - especially when the lovely Filippa wanders precariously off pitch and slides around hoping to find the right note.
The is a new Prima Donna version for Mexico!.......2006-12-05
Let me inform you tha Filippa also made a new version of Prima Donna for Mexico, that includes wonderful versions from the songs: "Me he enamorado de tí" (Woman in love), "Cómo he de vivir sin tu cariño" (How am I supposed to live without you), O terra addio (duet with Marcello Giordano). Enjoy her album!!!! ;-D

Filippa is one of few singers that is conscious to use well her voice and she show widely her abilities. It's amazing listen to this miracolous voice. Down to the earth 'till Up to the Heaven!!
For exemple, listen closely to "Senza Mamma". She use all the passion she can do singing very high notes in chest voice. She sings every note perfectly. She studies Opera for so many years and even if Filippa is not a(real) Opera singer she is ready to amaze!
Masterpiece.......2006-03-06
Great arrangement, GREAT voice, beautiful packaging---when I bought Ms.Giordano's Prima Donna, I thought this was THE album to "DO IT." (Although her self-titled album 6 years ago was stunning, this is a KILLER...a masterpiece!) Then I realized it was only available in Japan and the much-needed hype is still absent. Anyway, here are my thoughts:
HIGHLIGHTS
-Our prima donna doesn't disappoint. The pop approach is still there together with the sublime arrangement. Vocal acrobats abound in UNA VOCE POCO FA and CHANSON BOHEME (Bonus track for Japan--does this mean it'll be released elsewhere soon?). Octave-jumping, staccatos and slurs are all there to mesmerize!
-Nessun Dorma gets an English version---GOING TO WIN. Sung in straight up diva attitude. The styling is reminiscent of Aretha Franklin's version at the Grammys a few years back.
-The most POP moment would be her O QUANTE VOLTE where her vocal cord turns into a rubber band, stretching the depths of Anita Baker to the high shrieks of Mariah Carey--in both Italian and English (towards the end).
-O SOLE MIO gets a tango makeover. Again the arrangement is just gorgeous---lots of strings and syrupy choral works in the background. Effectively charming!
-A diva on a mission----Filippa gets spiritual in a couple of her English tracks: TOUCH THE FUTURE and RIVER where she feels "dead and constantly reborn...my endless mission" or how she talks about "pure philosophy of giving." The first is a perfect spritual lullaby--something to calm your soul before drifting into dreamland. The latter is rather Enya-esue, both in overall sound and lyrics. Read between the lines and get enlightened, fans!
LAST THOUGHT, whoever's responsible for getting this record out, do something! She needs to be heard--everywhere...worldwide. This is a divine piece of art(classical purists may beg to differ but ART transcends genres, open your hearts!) Even the website www.filippagiordano.net is on hold. Meanwhile, if ordering it through the internet is your only way of getting this album, do it! Like I said, this is a masterpiece.

A star.......2007-05-14
Oh Man!What can an useless australian know about italian music?Well, nothing at all.Filippa Giordano is a great artist loved by some of the most important composers and conductors of the world.Names?Morricone and Riccardo Muti.If you like music buy this cd.
Shall I?.......2007-02-26
Shall I do the honours or should someone else? Alright, since no one else is going to state the obvious, I guess it is up to me....
Filippa Giordano can't sing.
Now back in the late 1990s, a little known (outside of Italia) model and sometime "Pop" singer by the name of Filippa Giordano was either coaxed into or had the unbridled temerity (and nerve) to record repertoire requiring vocal and musical techniques, skills, comprehension and talent far in advance of Signorina Giordano's meagre and patently limited resources. Her music was "accompanied" by a very cheesy second rate sounding "wedding singer" studio band. The result was execrable.
Giordano's technique ranged from a breathy "little girl" voice [enhanced with massive artificial reverb] in the parts within her vocal range and when the melodic line went beyond Flipper's vocal limitations, she turned the music into the blood-curdling screams of a banshee. Breathy baby-doll and screaming banshee - Flipper Giordano's only two modes of vocal production. The results? Well???! "Not good", would have to be the understatement of the century! ;-))
Now that some other hapless money hungry producers and "artists" are churning out more and more "popera" glop, some mercenary git has decided that it was high time the musical fiasco that was Filippa Giordano's career was brought down from the attic, where it belongs, dusted off, tarted up with a new colour photograph of the talentless model and shoved in front of the philistines of the world again. Maybe a few more suckers out there would be ready to buy this risible attempt at singing again?
This album is a dud and a fiasco.

Filippa is a REAL singer!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-30
I really love Filippa Gioradno. She has a real great voice. Most of people think that she can't do sing the opera songs in a pop-way, but they are wrong. introduced by Filippa to the opera music i really fell in love with real opera. Listening to Mozart,Bellini,Verdi,Puccini and the others.
For those who want to learn about opera in an easy way...this cd is for you.
a little surprise inside.......2006-01-04
If you are an opera fan you'll like this album and if you are a fan of ABBA you'll adore it as there is a duet "La barcarolle" from Les contes d'Hofmann sung by Filippa and Frida Lyngstad
Genius.......2005-09-01
I work in the music industry for a classical music label. Opera, among other things, has appealed to me since childhood. Today one is rarely surprised by a new female vocalist. Despite years of exposure to what some snobbishly call "pure" opera, I fell in love with Ms. Giordano's voice immediately. Granted, she utilizes microphonics in an unusual way, but it allows the listener to hear every intake of breath, every fluctuation of fleeing, and as such, brings one closer to the emotion that the aria was designed to produce. This is the first vocalist I've encountered who sings arias to the individual listener rather than an imagined audience hall.
When it comes to established art forms, it is difficult to remain open minded. Madame Butterfly, for example, was a disaster when it first premiered. On the other hand, there's a fine line between doing justice to old art and polluting it with cheap flourishes and modern marketing. Fillipa does not cross that line, though be warned that a few of her tracks are modern ballads. She is a taker of risks.
The only problem I have is that she hasn't released an album in a significant period of time. Which is odd, considering her acclaim in Italy. Apparently she is in the process of being signed by Sony, though I haven't yet confirmed this. Until I find out, I must say that wherever you are, Filippa, make more music!
Complete and utter garbage from 'Philistine Filippa'.......2005-07-23
Complete and utter garbage.
A bad singer. Schlock production. Dreary arrangements. A choice of repertoire way beyond the capabilities of the "singer".
Philistines and haters of Classical music, rejoice! Your savour is here! The Philistine Queen - Filippa Giordano! A triumph of misguided and naked ambition over talent, skill, art and musicality.
"No, Virginia, there isn't a beautiful voice behind every beautiful face."
Fortunately, Signorina Filippa has not made any more albums since this one and hopefully this silly nonsense is now behind us. I trust Ms Giordano now has a real job in the music industry - tea ladies and cleaners are always required in recording studios.
Superb classical crossover album of 2002!.......2002-07-25
Beautiful collection of songs to follow up the incredible worldwide success of her debut album FILIPPA GIORDANO. IL ROSSO AMORE features a stunning array of original multi-lingual tunes (including two written and produced by soundtrack legend Ennio Morricone) and reworked popular classical arias. This visionary album is simply a classic!

The first time I heard Filippa Giordano was about a year ago. I got shocked about her sweet voice, now I got the chance to heard her in this album, and I have to say that she hasn't disappoint me yet. On the contrary, with her voice she made me bought her third album Passioni. Here, where I live it is difficult to get all of them, so I had to order them to Europe and USA. Believe, all her albums worth the mail expense. I also recommend you Emma Shapplin.

Genius.......2004-09-11
Filippa Giordano is easily the most innovative vocalist performing operatic music today. Few singers are brave enough, or, for that matter, talented enough to attempt to change traditional arias in any way. Rather, they rest on the "laurels" of their voices, either beautiful or mediocre. While Filippa has a beautiful voice, it is the way she sings that is most noteworthy. By way of her odd use of microphones, she produce (1) a stunnning, almost supernatural vocal clarity, and (2) resonating power. As someone educated in music myself, I must admit, she took a bit of getting used to, but once I spent enough time with this album it quickly became my favorite, and she moved to the top of my list of favorite singers. If you're considering purchasing this album, I suggest you throw away traditional notions of how opera "should" sound and enjoy the performance of a woman who, unlike most individuals in the arts these days, isn't afraid to take risks.
Filippa does it again.......2002-10-11
One my first listen, I did not like "Il Rosso Amore" as much as her previous release. Then the more I listened, the more it grew on me. I especially enjoy the "Madama Butterfly" pieces and "Heaven Knows" which is sung both in Italian and English versions. Also recommended: Miss Giordano's "Passioni" which I purchased while in Italy; have not seen it stateside.
Bravo!
The return of the singer with no voice! Creepy!.......2002-10-02
This disc is woeful and the singing is incompetent and unpleasant.
Warning - no serious music lover should buy this recording.
I am sorry. I should have mentioned that this CD makes a very attractive beer mat or mini frisbee. You can forget about the slapper on the cover! It will be interesting to see if Flipper Giordano ever makes another CD! I don't doubt for a moment that the Flipper the dolphin made more attractive noises!
