Rameau: Orchestral Suites (vol. 1)
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Baroque opera in France was very different from the Italian "opera seria" form that prevailed elsewhere in Europe at the same time. While the Italian tradition preferred a succession of detachable arias that provided a showcase for star singers, French opera consisted of an equal measure of song and dance, with the vocal parts integrated into a much more continuous musical structure. Rameau's ballet music is the finest of the period--it has a really physical quality of movement, and the most interesting and pronounced rhythmic definition. All of which is a complicated way of saying that it really sets your toes tapping. Check it out; with excellent performances and a budget price, you've nothing to lose. --David Hurwitz

Rameau and the Rococo.......2007-01-09
I used to think the Rococo was nothing but Mozart and Haydn with a few lesser lights imitating them. I discovered Rameau in college when I bought an old Vox recording of Les Indes back in the 1960s. Gunter Kerr led his fine ensemble in a forthright performance. This recording by the Chapelle royale is a revelation. This is the full--as far as I can tell--set of incidental music to the opera, and what a joy the music is. It is full of the Rameau touches, and this recording along with another recording of the suites from La Naissance d'Osiris by the very fine Capella Savaria belongs in any serious rococo lover's library. Tops all the way--the Chaconne from the Les Indes being one of the supreme gifts of Rameau's art.

Rameau for Orchestra.......2006-11-28
Jean Phillippe Rameau (1685 -- 1764) began to compose opera only when he reached the age of fifty. He wrote over thirty operas which both popular and controversial in his lifetime. Alas, they soon faded from active performance. Rameau's operas contain much inspiring music, for both orchestra and singers.
A major difficulty with performing Rameau's operas in full lies in the conventions of French music of his day in which musical sections, called divertissements, were separated from the dramatic sections in which the plot was developed. Thus, Rameau's music can usefully be approached by selections from the operas in which the musical interludes are gathered together.
In this CD performed by the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under the Direction of Frans Bruggen, orchestral selections from two Rameau operas, "Nais" and "Zoroastre" have been compiled to form two orchestral suites. Frans Bruggen, who had been a virtuoso performer on the recorder, formed the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century in 1981, and it has gathered an enviable and well-deserved reputation for its performance of early music on period instruments. In 1997, Bruggen and the Orchestra formed their own label, "The Grand Tour," for their CD releases, and this CD is part of that series.
Virtually all early French music, including the orchestral music from the operas presented here is based upon dance. Thus, both the orchestral suites derived from "Nais" and "Zoroastre" are full of French dance forms, including gavottes, musettes, rigaudons, sarabandes, passepieds, minuets, and more. The selections also include overtures, which in Rameau set the stage for the drama,, airs, and short pieces descriptive of the dramatic action. The works here include extensive solo passages for winds, particularly the flutes. Rameau's music is both graceful and dramatic, and it is full of contrast, rhythm, and harmonic daring.
The first suite on this CD consists of twelve numbers from Rameau's pastoral opera "Nais". This opera was written for the French court in the mid-1640s and it features the nostalgic longing of French nobility for a rustic, idylic rural life. Following a graceful overture, the suite consists of a series of varied dance forms celebrating the life of the country.
Rameau composed "Zoroastre" in 1649 and revised in in 1656. "Zoroastre" was a pivotal opera for the composer though it is rarely performed. It tells the story of the great Persian prophet Zarathustra (Zoroaster) who founded a great ancient monotheistic religion that survives today based upon the conflict between good and evil and the ultimate triumph of the good. Rameau's opera is also heavily influenced by Freemasonry and is a predecessor of Mozart's "The Magic Flute". The opera is cast as a love story between forces of good and evil, with good winnning out at last. The suite from "Zoroastre" is both lengthier and more complex that the suite from "Nais". It opens with a dramatic overture which, for the first time, works to tells the story of the upcoming opera. Intermixed with the dance movements are selections showing the power of goodness, the wickedness of the forces of evil, and the contest between good and evil in the minds of people. There are stirring passages for flute, percussion, and tambourine, and a musically complex closing section.
This CD offers a wonderful introduction to the operatic world of Rameau -- or at least to the orchestral part of that world. I suggest those interested in Rameau combine this CD of orchestral music from "Nais" and "Zoroastre" with a CD of selections from the rich vocal music of Rameau's operas. These CDs typically have the advantage of drawing from a larger selection of operas. I recommend a excellent CD on the Hyperion label, called "Regne Amour" which features love songs from several Rameau operas, including "Zoroastre," beautifully performed by Jeffrey Skidmore conducting Ex Cathedra with Carolyn Sampson as the soprano soloist.

Beautiful!!!.......2006-02-28
Beautiful interpretation! I have acquired others works performed by Frans Bruggen and the Orchestra of the 18th Century. I highly recommend this CD.
Where has this CD been all my life?.......2004-11-13
Rameau was quite possibly *the* master of the Baroque orchestra (yes, Bach and Handel included!), and this CD is quite possibly the best evidence of this. This is a truly *magical* disc.
Rameau's operas contain a great number of marvellously colorful and inventive freestanding dance and instrumental movements. It's a popular practice to extract these movements from the operas and present them as "orchestral suites." I for one can't get enough of them!
I had heard previous Rameau discs by McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque on the Conifer label (suites from Platee and Dardanus) and Harmonia Mundi label (suites from Temple de Gloire and Zoroastre). However, they are utterly eclipsed by the wind playing and atmospheric recording found on this disc. I was familiar with Bruggen and his wonderful orchestra (mostly Dutch) from their series of Haydn symphonies for Philips. Haydn wrote expertly for solo winds in his symphonies, often in concertante fashion, and the Orchestra of the 18th Century wind players excelled in those recordings. Here they cover themselves with glory! The recording features musettes, which although pictured in the booklet are never actually explained. Whatever they are, they sound much like rustic bagpipes, and they are played here with an astounding poignancy and depth of feeling ("tendresse" is a key word in the French Baroque repertoire). Listen to the audio samples and you will be enchanted!
By "atmospheric recording," I mean that the orchestral sound is wonderfully blended, with a rich sonority. Where McGegan coaxes a very lightly textured (some might say "thin") and even over-analytically crisp sound from his Philharmonia Baroque, Bruggen (and other Dutch conductors in this repertoire, such as Kuijken and Leonhardt) coaxes a more sensual sound that seems at times to even presage Debussy -- it's Baroque orchestral music at its most heady and intoxicating!
Gramophone picks Bruggen's two Glossa discs as first (and only) choice in this repertoire, and I believe rightfully so. Not to mention that the booklets and CD cases are most handsomely made (they resemble many Alia Vox CDs). I know that Bruggen and his expert band have previously recorded three discs of Rameau's orchestral suites for Philips. I am waiting *impatiently* for Philips to box them up with Leonhardt & the OAE's wonderful recording of Les Paladins as a truly world-beating 4-disc set of Rameau's glorious orchestral suites. In the meantime, you really cannot do better than Bruggen's *two* Glossa discs.

The French are fond of categorizing things. Baroque stage works had many names: "tragedie lyrique," "opera-ballet," "acte de ballet," "ballet bouffon," and many more besides. Basically, aside from length, all of these various genres consist of the same thing: a series of dances and vocal scenes arranged in such a way so as to illustrate a plot drawn from classical mythology. Rameau was the finest composer of these opera/ballet combinations, and his dance music was so successful that orchestral suites of dances taken from the larger works have always been popular, even in his own lifetime. These two sensationally played suites vividly illustrate his uniquely colorful orchestration and rhythmic verve. If you like Baroque music, you'll love this. --David Hurwitz

Unfamiliar but shouldn't be.......2007-03-29
I heard the conductor conduct this piece and had to have it. It is great music for a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Can't Think of a Better Way to Get to Know Rameau.......2005-07-29
Ironically (maybe), while the operas from which these suites are extracted aren't among Rameau's important ones, the orchestral music itself is some of the most colorful and entertaining that Rameau produced. The slow music is elegant and dignified, as usual with with this master, but the more boistrous stuff is absolutely brilliantly martial, with flashing trumpets, thundering timpani. Each Tambourin is a witty gem--in all, this is Baroque orchestral music at its best.
But then again, the performances are perfect or as close as mortals can get to that mark. William Christie's forces, good as they usually are, outdo themselves here, obviously enjoying themselves immensely. You can't produce results like these unless you do--which is another compliment to Rameau and his genius. First-rate sound with lots of presence rounds out the package.
Fabulous.......2004-03-12
Well executed, wonderful music. Its hard to beat Mcgegan and his band. He's done several CDs of Rameau orchestral music, and all are standouts. Nais is in a league of its own in terms of musical invention and brilliance. The overture is outstanding. (Incidentally, Christophe Rousset and Les talens Lyriques do a "take no prisoners" version of the Nais overture on their CD of Rameau overtures....that's the only place where Mcgegan has been eclipsed in my book)
French Baroque Masterpieces.......2003-04-10
The two baroque "court pieces" here showcase Rameau's gift and musicianship. Musical passages are very ornamental, a stark contrast to the crisp sound of the Italian baqoque. Both Nais and The Temple of Glory are very energetic with many dance parts, and listening to it is both uplisfting and relaxing. The sound quality is excellent. Highly recommended.
Very Good.......1999-06-13
A nice blend of relaxing and beautiful baroque music. If one loves baroque music, then one's library must not lack this amazing CD. Very pleasing.

Some of the best Rameau, but..........2007-07-11
I prefer Bruggen's interpretations and recordings whenever possible.
The Naxos recordings here are a little on the dull side, from a sound-quality and energy/vitality perspective. Bruggen's are richer and more dance-like - they are simply more musical performances.
Rameau: Orchestral Suites (vol. 1).......2006-07-15
Rameau: Orchestral Suites (vol. 1)~ Jean-Philippe Rameau is simply put it a wonderful and stupendous recording from one of the masters of French Baroque music. The Baroque time period was an amazing time for music in my opinion and produced such great composers such as Bach, Vivaldi, Purcell to mention a few. Whilst not being as accomplished as Bach, Rameau is right on par with composers such as Vivaldi and Purcell. The book-let is well done with a wonderful painting on the front and the essay on Rameau is well written and not over-long or verbose. I highly recommend this splendid recording to fans of Baroque music and to people that fancy good music in general and give this 5 out of 5 stars.
Lively, spirited introduction to the French Baroque.......2002-12-01
Rameau at his best. Flutes, tambourines and strings in wonderful arrangement. Oboes in the slow movements played with infinite precision. Tubas and horns adding contrast. Embellishment with the greatest of delicacy. Rhythm is created by stress on the strings and overlay of the other instruments. A tribute to the 18th century and the royal court of Louis XV. Here, the ensemble Capella Savaria, led by Mary Terey-Smith, a Hungarian who became an accomplished academician in the United States and Canada, uses original instruments to create the authentic sound of the royal court in Baroque France. This is supposed to be "opera", but it is far from the "operas" two centuries hence and, controversally, the Italian operas of the day. The libretto is not disclosed nor is it significant. Polyphony is restrained but very much evident in multi-instrument dialogues and duets. The interplay of the flutes with the strings and other instruments is very satisfying. It all culminates in a rousing finale in 6/8 time.

Customer Reviews:
Great mix of baroque music.......2007-07-19
Most people think of Bach and Vivaldi when the phrase Baroque music comes up, and imagine old white men in white wigs playing instrumental pieces that are mathematical than musical. I though so too until buying and listening to this CD. It does contain pieces from both Vivaldi and Bach, but only less popular pieces. It also includes works from many other Baroque composers, such as Albonini, Telemann, Buffardin, Handel and Rameau. The type of music is quite melodious and is actually closer to Classical classic music than Baroque music, with some tunes having tinges of Romanticism. The instrumentation is great as all the pieces are full orchestral scores. The sound quality is also great, and for the price, this is a great CD.

Customer Reviews:
13 assorted selections.......2005-10-17
13 pieces by famous/not so famous baroque composers provide a wider breadth of experience than most albums. This is a quality selection useful for just listening, relaxing, entertaining, meditating, or just background music. Lots to like here. Enjoy!
A baroque cd I turn to again and again........2004-01-20
As I have stated in other classical reviews, I am not an expert on classical music, but I highly recommend this CD to anyone looking for a satisfying collection of baroque works. The well known composers are here, i.e. Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, and it also may introduce listeners to baroque composers they may not have heard before, i.e. Marcello, Locatelli, Torelli. An all around great Baroque experience.

Live Klemperer Treasure from 1968.......2006-06-27
This extraordinary set of live Klemperer performances should be in the collection of everyone who cares about Klemperer and his marvelous style of music making. Massive and often slow but always vital and alive, they will not appeal to everyone. But it is astonishing how these CDs bring into sharp focus Klemperer's real magnetism on the podium. As good as his EMI recordings are, they are so very much the product of the recording studio one can be forgiven for wondering whether they represent what Klemperer was in fact capable of achieving in live performance, particularly near the end of his career when his various physical disabilities became almost overwhelming impediments to performance. Somehow, almost miraculously, Klemperer put it all together for a few weeks in the late Spring of 1968 in Vienna to produce truly incandescent performances. Not note perfect by any means, this is music making nevertheless for the ages. I suppose the Mahler 9th comes closest to failure as it offers some of the most ragged playing in the set. (According to the excellent liner notes, some of that can be attributed to Klemperer but more to the orchestra's unfamiliarity with Mahler's last great symphony and even downright hostility to Mahler's music in general.) But in the end that raggedness doesn't matter at all. Klemperer's trademark qualities as conductor are very much present in the Mahler as in all these performances: clarity of polyphonic texture; structural integrity; overall rhythmic coherence (even if ensembles are a bit 'shaky' at times). I was particularly moved by the performances of Bach and Mozart -- the 'Jupiter" symphony is positively incandescent -- as well as by the Bruckner Fifth which is, hands down, the greatest performance of that symphony I have ever heard, live or on record. But all these performances are well worth hearing again and again in spite of their foibles. All performances from the 1968 series are in good quality stereo sound; the single mono recording, a very decent-sounding performance of the Brahms German Requiem, is taken from a Klemperer concert in Vienna about ten years earlier. I don't recommend this set to the 'note perfect' crowd or to anyone who has a fixed idea about what is the "best" recording of the Beethoven Fifth or Mahler Ninth. But if you are prepared to hear the 'thoughts' of an old man who has struggled with this music all his life, for whom this music meant more than anything else on earth and for which he was willing to push himself past pain and infirmity for one last encounter, then I think you will be moved and enriched by this priceless set.
