I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

I have been a fan of Kander and Ebb for sometime, and I have several of their CD's and or DVD's. I heard some selections from "70, girls,70" on a local radio station in Australia, and decieded to get a copy. I have not been disappointd, the delight of hearing Mildred Natwick, and Lillian Roth, is something not to be missed. Great Stuff. Up there with "On the 20th Century" and "Steele Pier"

70 GIRLS 70 was written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, best-remembered for their firecracker CABARET and CHICAGO scores. This 1971 offering was based on the British play BREATH OF SPRING (later turned into the film MAKE MINE MINK) about a motley group of seniors who steal furs and money from young people, in order to help the elderly and less-fortunate.

The show featured an amazing lineup of regal old-timers headed by Mildred Natwick, Hans Conried and Lillian Roth, and also featured Henrietta Jacobson, Lillian Hayman, Dorothea Freitag and Lucie Lancaster. 70 GIRLS 70 shuttered after 35 performances.

The score yielded at least one hit: "Yes", which became a staple in Liza Minnelli's repertoire for years. Other great numbers include "Go Visit" (a showstopping turn for Henrietta Jacobson and young Tommy Breslin); "Coffee in a Cardboard Cup"; "Broadway, My Street" and "The Elephant Song".

Still, a must-own for Broadway enthusiasts. [SONY SK-30589]

What a special treat. This ranks with chicago and cabaret as kander and ebb's best. what a magnificent score, beautifully recorded so we can relive the theater experience. and what an experience. virtually every song is a gem, starting with the rousing "old folks", through mildred natwick's precious performances on HOME and the elephant song. trust me, i own virtually every show cd every produced and having discovered this cd, i cannot stop playing it.

A wonderful Kander and Ebb score! Full of their usual showstopping type numbers! You'll just love "Coffee In A Cardboard Cup" and "Broadway, My Street", while "Do We?" and "Old Folks" are sure to at least make you chuckle. I highly recommend this C.D to join any collection. You might own "Cabaret", "Chicago" and "Kiss Of The Spider Woman", but your Kander and Ebb collection will be incomplete without this one!

Philips' 100-volume Great Pianists of the 20th Century series is one of the most ambitious projects ever put together by a record company. For all the debate that will surely ensue over who was chosen and who was passed over, it's obvious that careful, loving attention has gone into the selection of content for the happy 72 to be admitted to this special pantheon (certain especially significant pianists are allotted two or even three volumes, such as Vladimir Horowitz). Each of the handsomely designed, sepia-tinted volumes--adorned with a black and white photo--contains two CDs and a thoughtful essay on the artist in question. Prospective buyers should be aware that this sampler volume offers only short vignettes (averaging between two and three minutes), along with a thumbnail sketch, for each pianist. Still, it's a smorgasbord of morsels that allow you to taste some of the major trends in philosophy and approach to the instrument throughout the century (and reaching well back into the 19th), and the overlap of repertory permits some fascinating quick comparisons as style and technique have evolved. Delve into some of the artists in the series--say Alfred Brendel or Martha Argerich--and trace in greater depth the piano's identity crisis. Is it, for example, a resonantly string-like instrument ideal for pastel shadings or a steely, percussive machine meant to express the hardness of the 20th century? There are countless discoveries to be made here, both for the connoisseur and for anyone taking the first step into getting acquainted with great keyboard artistry. --Thomas May

Tantalizing preview of good things to come.......2003-01-07

This is an introductory 2-CD set to introduce a very grand series of CD's featuring the 20th Century's greatest pianists.
As a sampler, there are some incredible jewels here, for example Nikita Magaloff's sparkling Chopin Tarantelle and Paganini Etude No.3: 'La Campanella' played excitingly by John Ogdon. There is even an early recording of Paderewski playing (predictably) Paderewski.

This sampler seems a bit of a Euro-centric, but the editors wisely chose to include Earl Wild doing Gershwin and Roslyn Tureck doing Bach. I ended up purchasing the Andre Watts volume from this series, and wondered what it would be like to own the whole shootin' match. I saw the entire CD series on display in a top notch music store in Germany--it was overwhelming to see the line of brown covers stretching impressively across an entire wall. The sampler is a good way to have a taste of this ambitious series of the giants of piano in the 20th Century. I listen to it often with great enjoyment.

RE: Those of you who complained/rejoiced about Gould's abscence: he is not on the sampler, true, I believe for... purposes or something along those lines. Rudolf Serkin is also not included, but both are among the "greatest pianists of the 20th Century" set.

I was pleased after reading the list of performers to see that Gould's machine-gun jiffy-pop piano "playing" is not included. I would like to hear more of Skanavi tho.

Forget Somebody?.......2000-09-21

Although I understand that it must have been very diffiult to decide which pianists got put in the collection, let alone a two-disc sampler, I still feel that any anthology of the piano (other than one highlighting the romantic era)should contain at least one piece by Gould, yet this one doesn't. Gould has been almost unanimously hailed as one of the most influential artist of the twentieth century, yet he is not included on this disc. Other than that, a great buy.

I love rousing choral music and this really filled the bill. Listening to the likes of Carmina Burana totally sweeps you away....gives you goose bumps....I HIGHLY recommend this CD. Great for people who are not very knowledgeable, because it has the BEST known choruses.

Love them, but beware of one track.......2005-12-21

Okay, the thing about the original release of this album is that "He's Just A Runaway" was a Rock-Dance song. When it was released as the second single, after the title track, the sisters reworked it into a Reggae version in hopes of not alienating their Black/R&B audience. The Reggae version became the tribute to Bob Marley.

So the album is supposed to be the original Rock version, but the track listing on this page says it's the Bob Marley version.

Reviewers here mention the Rock version. So there is confusion here. Although both versions have merit it is unclear which you are getting on this CD.

One of the Best!!!.......2005-05-19

This is definately one of the best of the Sister Sledge albums. All American Girls showcased the fact that these sisters can handle ballads and dance floor jams. The classic title track is simply addictive, with sister Kathy rivaling her "We Are Family" performance. Kathy's other shining moments are "Music Makes Me Feel Good" and the tender ballad "Next Time You'll Know". "Happy Feeling" features eldest sister Debbie offering a vocal as inviting as a tropical breeze. "I Don't Want To Say Goodbye" features Kim in her pop/soul inflections, while sister Joni soars vocally on "Make A Move". Overall, this album is superb and is a must have for Sister Sledge fans.

Sister Sledge All American Girls.......2005-04-20

I really liked this album. It moves from funk to chic to rock. I think the album has been underrated by alot of reviewers.
The title track is great...has that 70's chic sound but what is neat about it is the song goes straight into the rock sound of "He's Just a Runaway" which I call some versitility. The harmonies are great which proves these ladies have a set of pipes on them. The song goes straight into that chic funk sound again going into "If You Really Want Me". The first three songs is what really stand out to me because of the quick change of music genre. "Happy Feeling" makes you feel happy. The rest of the tracks are pretty much the dance feel you get from Sister Sledge which is great dance music. "I Don't Want to Say Goodbye" is another versatile song sounds to me like it could be a pop ballad but never made it to the charts.

Simply Infectious!.......2005-04-06

I think this is one of the best Sister Sledge albums , the 2nd best in my opinion behind "We Are Family" . This one was produced by the genius that is Narada Michael Walden who knows a lot about producing Women(Stacy Lattisaw,Angela Boffill,Aretha,Whitney,Mariah,etc...).You can feel that the ladies had gone from Disco Soul to Funky soul in a very mature way and it shows in one of the album's funkiest tunes"If You Really Want Me:, the music, Kathy's Voice, the arrangement, ...it's sheer pleasure to any die hard fan of old school soul.Love them and always will.

Simmering 1st half, lame 2nd half........2005-03-29

First of all, the Rhino CD re-issue I have contains(thankfully) the original version of 'Runaway'. Secondly, the first (or what was side 1 on the LP) half of the album is fantastic. But unfortunately, the post-disco/synth/early new wave flavor of the early '80's, really dooms the second half the CD. The only exception is the closing song- which aptly describes the sister's career after this album.

You know the classical compilation business is getting serious when you have artists like conductor Andrew Litton and the Dallas Symphony on a record of music for little kids to play dress-ups by. On this disc, packaged explicitly for that purpose, participants include the Seattle Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Nothing but the best for my kid! The selections were apparently chosen by a girl, pictured on the cover, who looks to be about five or six. She's done a great job. There's lots of Tchaikovsky here, as well as Grieg, Gliere, and Prokofiev. It's great music and the disc, with its cheerful cover, will likely bring a smile to the lips of many adults as well as children. --Gwendolyn Freed

A Good Collection of Wagner's Choruses.......2005-03-02

Wagner wrote great choral scenes in his operas, but when recorded in excerpt form, they rarely have the power found in a complete recording or a live performance. The same holds true when singers use Wagner arias as a solo venture. Wagner does not seem to work excerpted. I have a few solo collections of Wagner arias and recordings of great German operatic choruses that I believe prove this point. Sometimes, when driving or casually listening to music, a listener wants a stirring rendition of a Wagner chorus, and hope for a recording similar to collections of Verdi choruses that even by the worst orchestras and choral groups still seem exciting. Few exist, until now. This recording by the Royal Swedish Orchestra and Chorus, under the direction of Leif Segerstam, is not only a bargain but a good recording of great Wagnerian choral works.

Surprisingly the best track on the album is the most difficult, the finale from Act I of PARSIFAL. "Elsa's Dream" from LOHENGRIN and the "Entry to the Hall" of TANNHAUSSER are well done. The excerpt from HOLLANDER is riveting. The RIENZI excerpt is probably less familiar to most audiences and listeners will see a different aspect of this great composer. The only fair track was the excerpt from DIE MEISTERSINGER, but this work always seems tricky to record.

According to the liner notes, the Royal Swedish Orchestra and Chorus have one of the best reputations outside of Germany for performing the works of Wagner. Listeners do get a taste of what this ensemble has to offer and if this recording is an indication of the ensemble's quality, Wagner in Sweden is probably an enjoyable experience.

One of the great singing basses of the century.......1999-09-26

Mark Reizen (1895-1992) is one of the great singing basses of the century.

He was endowed with a voice of unique velvety timbre capable of the the softest pianissimos and the most powerful sounds, all seemingly effortlessly produced and supported by superior intelligence and musicality.

A giant of a man, he was almost 6ft 4in tall, and an impressive figure on stage. He was one of the best performers of the leading Musorgsky bass roles such as Boris Godunov and Dosifei from Khovanshchina.

On this CD Reizen displays his extraordinary vocal characterization qualities in major Russian roles. One of my favorites is the tremendous Song of the Viking Guest from Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko.

In the great aria of Khan Konchak from Prince Igor, the easy "stroll" of the voice to the low F in the central section is just miraculous.

The song of Prince Gremin from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin displays great sensitivity, simplicity of phrasing and total respect for the musical line.

Reizen enjoyed a uniquely long career, his live performance of Prince Gremin on the stage of the Moscow Bolshoi Opera to celebrate his 90th birthday, still in impressive voice and physical shape has made the "Guinness Book of Records".
