Haydn: The Piano Sonatas
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Haydn was not a pianist of any distinction, nor a very successful composer of instrumental concertos, but his piano sonatas--and there are more than 60 of them--are much finer than those of Mozart, who was one of his era's greatest keyboard virtuosos. The reason for this is simple. Mozart wrote his keyboard concertos for himself and his sonatas for students. Haydn, on the other hand, was constantly stimulated to write piano music for gifted amateurs, though in those days amateurs were often as good as the professionals, particularly women for whom a concert career was out of the question. This is great music then, charming but never trivial, and John McCabe plays it with impressive style and vigor. --David Hurwitz

Impressive technique, but missing Haydn's genial spirit.......2007-07-11
Almost all of Haydn's artistry is richly rewarding, and I encourage everyone with an interest in Classical music to acquaint themselves with his welcoming genius. Haydn's gift for lapidary musical invention seems nearly inexhaustible, and his piano sonatas are yet another genre where his creativity can be easily approached and enjoyed. I'm grateful to Marc-Andre Hamelin for recording these neglected sonatas with splendid panache, bringing them fresh to an appreciative audience. However, I sometimes feel that Haydn's music is performed skillfully, though without the breadth of humane sympathy it deserves, and I suspect that the full wealth of Haydn's craft is not quite arrayed, here. I won't find fault with Hamelin's talents as a pianist, which are brilliantly polished, nor do I mean to be glib with my critique, but I will say that stylistically, his renderings sound to my ears more like caffeinated Chopin rather than Franz Josef's neo-Classical poise, humor, verve and endearing warmth. I first fell in love with Haydn's piano music through the performances of Bart van Oort, on pianoforte (Brilliant Classics label) and John McCabe, on modern piano (London/Decca label). Unfortunately, these recordings seem to be available only as complete sets of the Haydn sonatas, which would be too great an investment for most listeners. A relatively inexpensive introduction to the abundant pleasures of Haydn's piano pieces can be found through the recordings of Alfred Brendel, such as this album available here on Amazon: Haydn: 3 Piano Sonatas; Fantasia in C; Adagio in F. Brendel's performance is erudite and heartfelt, if somewhat romantic. For pianism that is a bit closer to the sound-world of 18th-century Austria (yet played on modern instruments) both Andras Schiff Haydn: Piano Sonatas and Leif Ove Andsnes ~ Haydn - Piano Sonatas can be recommended.
Where's the fire?.......2007-06-23
Marc-Andre Hamelin's twofer of Haydn piano sonatas details most of the master's later sonatas in stylisitic performances that sometimes get a bit too dramatic and use too much pedal. Hamelin is a world-class player recorded well here who has some affinity for this music. My principal question when listening to these is, "Where's the fire?" Hamelin uses tempo more attuned to the keyboard music of Antonio Vivaldi, had he written any, than the witty and relaxed Josef Haydn. For all his fine quailties, Hamelin simply plays too fast too often, as if he's trying to set some sort of world speed record.
I recommend anyone looking to invest in a two-CD set of Hadyn sonatas to first sample the classic set by Alfred Brendel that's been around more than 20 years. He is more mature and more temperate playing than what's provided by this viruoso. Brendel is expert in this repertoire and always adheres to Haydn's style and temperament. Some other famous players have done well with these sonatas, also. Sviatoslav Richter loved Haydn and recorded many of the sonatas on concert and studio recordings over his career. Virtuoso colorist keyboard virtuoso Mikhail Pletnev recorded a handful of the sonatas including one of the best versions of the "English" sonata ever recorded. Try his recordings on Virgin and compare them to Hamelin, who is a fine player but is intemperate.
The Fastest Haydn Sonatas Ever Recorded in the Guiness Book of Records.......2007-06-19
I've to second AllOverWith's review of Hamelin's Haydn and I have nothing much to add that has not been said.
Four positive, five-star reviews had prompted me to listen again - just to the entire first-movement of the last C major Sonata. I thought I could be wrong - that there could still be something that I could savour from the recording. Maybe something that I've not expected.
At such breakneck speed, I thought I was just treated to a whirlwind of notes, smacked together in a fraction of a second; it made little sense to my mind's ear, even less so to speak of a nuanced interpretation.
If the whole point of this other set of Haydn sonatas in the market is to prove something that prior recordings haven't, Hamelin has certainly done it - purely in terms of speed. If anything else there's probably little that has not been already said.
Initially I gave five out of five stars unintentionally and wanted to leave it as it is, but thought it would be construed as either contrary to my views or an overly deliberate attempt at sarcasm.
So I gave two stars for the interpretation and an additional star for those who value pyrotechnics and how fast these pieces could go.
Evocative of absolutely nothing save Hamelin's fingers........2007-06-18
Okay, time to bring the hyperbole down a notch. It seems that no matter what Hamelin does he's lauded to the skies, which strikes me as a fair assessment of the soullessness of the age. Look at the guy -- he's an accountant! And this is not piano playing, it's note-tabulating. These performances of the Haydn piano sonatas feel like butterflies pinned to a board of cork. Facile technique for the sake of facile technique. Sometimes that can work, like in the Medtner sonatas, where just playing the notes correctly will suffice -- since no one else can do it -- but here, in Haydn, it feels almost contemptuous. Hamelin seems to take on faith that there is no depth, nothing of importance to be found in these pages, that these are antiques that he's only dusting off to show how his nimble sausage-fingers can make ANYTHING interesting. Wrong.
Haydn was well known for having a story in mind for almost every piece he wrote. His sonatas are far from all-purpose baroque filigree like Scarlatti; they are miniature dramas. Though we'll never know those stories, what's important is that the impression be given of Haydn's personality ( a doddering yet youthful-spirited old man, occasionally getting mildly excited by memories, then becoming mildly depressed at his current situation, but remaining generally optimistic. ) I defy you to find anything less personal than the impression Hamelin gives on this CD. He literally sucks the breath out of these pieces, vampirizes them, reduces them to "sewing-machine music," to quote Gould on Bach. The arrogance with which he jumps from Scriabinite tripe to Haydn as if it's all the same to him, as if he doesn't even have to make the effort to immerse himself in an entirely different mindset, is off-putting in the extreme.
You can't take a bullet train if you want to see the countryside, and Ronald Brautigam on BIS gets so much more out of this music that it's ludicrous to even compare the two. This thing puts me to sleep.
Hamelin Does it Again!.......2007-06-18
Marc-Andre Hamelin is, arguably, the finest pianist performing today. His choice of repertoire is unfailingly interesting. This CD, as many other reviewers have indicated, might seem to be a surprise at first - Hamelin and Haydn? - yet this apparent difficulty resolves itself easily. Haydn was one of the giants of music. His influence on Beethoven is profound. He continued to grow as a musician and composer right up until he died. His piano sonatas are unfairly overshadowed by Mozart's essays in the form. Yet, I would agree with the late Glenn Gould that Haydn writes more effectively and interestingly for the instrument. Unlike Mozart, who was considered a virtuoso and had something to lose by learning from a rival, Haydn did not hesitate to learn from the new virtuosity that Clementi was bringing to the instrument and a number of these (especially the later sonatas) are brusing knuckle dusters. It is ironic that nothing I have heard from Hamelin in years displays his exceptional gifts so well as these CDs of Haydn sonatas. The clarity, brio, precision and taste are extraordinary. These are the finest recordings of Haydn sonatas that I have ever heard. And this is a superior value. Hyperion has given you two CDs for the price of one. I hope that Mr. Hamelin records more Haydn. Buy this, you will not be sorry.

Worth it!.......2007-07-19
Andras Schiff here shows us the lively and interesting side of Haydn's piano sonatas which are generally somewhat boring when played by others. Haydn's music greatly resembles Mozart's (sonatas) and Schiff manages to bring out that Mozart-like quality in this record. However Haydn's sonatas, while they each are quite different can sometimes be quite monotonous when Schiff tries to make them bigger than what they are. They are simple music really designed for students and relaxing music. When interpreted with a "Beethoven-like" quality they really can be destroyed.
Haydn piano sonatas get the respect they deserve.......2007-06-20
Other reviewers here have pointed out the many fine points of this exceptional 2cd set of Haydn sonatas & I agree with most of them. One different point of focus is the music itself: Haydn wrote quite a few outstanding piano sonatas, many of which I think are just as rewarding as Mozart's. It takes a pianist like Andras Schiff to make a convincing case for this argument. There is sensitivity & plenty of reflection along with lots of brio here. And never mind period instruments - Schiff makes each sonata sound perfectly natural on a modern keyboard.
Now if you want a good survey of Haydn's sonatas, in addition to Schiff's set also consider purchasing Marc-Andre Hamelin's 2cd set on Hyperion. I have both the Schiff & Hamelin surveys & there's only one sonata duplicated among the 19 that are included between the sets. Taken together, these four discs, which average over 70 minutes each, provide a major chunk of highly rewarding Haydn. (One minor caveat - as much as I enjoy Hamelin's Haydn, which really sparkles, comparison between the two pianists shows Schiff to be a more seasoned artist, at least in this repertory. Hamelin has the fingers to play everything fast, which sometimes means a little too fast, whereas Schiff maintains a perfect pace throughout.) Buyers may also want to check out a brilliant Haydn disc on Hanssler by Evgeni Koroliov, who has earned a reputation as a great Bach player.
In short, very highly recommended.
Fine performances AND not overly boomy........2007-04-24
These are highly desirable performances of the tremendous and still little known Haydn piano sonatas. Schiff is a master pianist who thinks about what his playing will sound like when transferred to digital format: the result is a huge plus for the consumer. Most available recorded performanceas of the sonatas are good, some very fine. My problem with many of these recordings, such as on Naxos or Decca, is that Haydn's musical make-up was rather boisterous, and as recordings of the sonatas reveal, this plays the devil with the inner voices of his keyboard works. Boomy congested sound makes for a pointless and very frustrating exercise. If you can handle it the Naxos recordings are very reasonably priced, as are the better recorded Decca with McCabe. But those large pianos present a myriad of sound issues. In this case Schiff is generally able to keep his sound balances from turning tubby, and the music and the listener benefits dramatically.
Another cleaner version of the sonatas - Leif Ove Andsnes. A performance very Scandanvian if you wish in its clarity, elegance and purity. Haydn's gusto and rude humor are transformed into a very Beethoven like power, all done in an ultra moderne approach. A must hear and also the readings are extremely pleasurable; especially so after the somewhat congested music-making/recordings often encountered in these piano sonatas.
Again - this just suggests Haydn has far more range than most give him credit for. The music itself? Wonderful!
Important repertoire, well played.......2007-01-05
As other reviewers have stated, this is a musically luminous performance of some important Haydn piano sonatas, a repertoire that needs to be better represented by high-quality commercial recordings. That said, Haydn's keyboard works really do benefit from performance on fortepiano. Beeethoven's sonatas more or less necessitated the invention of the modern 88-key, metal soundboard concert grand, but Haydn's were conceived for the older instrument, and need to be heard at least occasionally in this way. Unfortunately, period instruments are seen as the province of specialists, so artists like Schiff seldom go near them. This is not a reason to avoid Schiff's recording, however; good musicianship is good musicianship. But in addition to this recording, see if you can find the complete Haydn piano sonatas on a Brilliant Classics (a Netherlands label) set. It features a tag team of pianists: Bart van Oort, Ursula Dutschler, Stanley Hoogland, Yoshiko Kojima & Riko Fukuda.
An Exceptional Haydn Piano Recording .......2006-05-01
Thanks to three prior reviews here, I decided to purchase this CD set. I have listened to many different recorded interpretations of these late Haydn piano sonatas over several decades; this set by Andras Schiff is the most rewarding in my listening experiece. His performance exemplifies the qualities of clarity and balance so central to the classical period. At the same time his sense of Haydn's wit, humour and invention is pure refreshment.
Andras Schiff is quoted as saying, "Silence is the beginning and end of all music...".
The way his musical notes sometimes appear out of dead silence is like the purest light appearing out of the darkest void. A kind of revelation!
Haydn's beautiful and sophisticated composition, Shiff's inspired enunciation, and Teldec's quality recording are in perfect concert here.

A remarkable pianist!.......2007-04-07
Although the brumes of the elapsed years, Rudolf Buchbinder in the middle seventies established a well deserved place among the pianist of his generation when personally decided to assume a great challenge like play Haydn in a moment in which precisely the entire world was celebrating the bicentenary of Beethoven's birth.
That was a bold decision, but the way he approached to the Hungarian master was filled of healthy vitality and mesmerizing freshness.
He has been gifted of a powerful sound, and so his Haydn never sounded kindly of I may. But with certain Beethovenian reminiscences.
I still remember the praised comments around the world with his successful versions recorded on Telefunken label.
If you are really looking for an innovative Haydn' s sound, go for this set. It will reward you from start to finish.

At one point in his life, Gould projected recording a complete Haydn sonata cycle. It's a terrible pity he never got to it, for if he had, the music itself would doubtless be more popular than it is today. Gould himself realized that Haydn's solo keyboard music was generally of higher quality than Mozart's, and we can only be grateful that he did get around to making this delightful set containing the last six sonatas. Aside from his gifts as a musician, Gould was also one of the funniest artists of this century, just as Haydn was in his day. This meeting of two great comics makes for some highly memorable listening. --David Hurwitz

SOME MAY ENJOY THESE REALIZATIONS..........2006-05-19
I, however, as a GG fan of nearly 40 years find it sad that he wasted his last years tinkering around with Haydn's banalities.
Anyone who thinks Haydn was greater than Mozart has a screw loose; anyone who hates Gould's Mozart likewise has a screw loose.
When I think of the great pieces GG could have realized in his late days, it nearly makes me weep that he wasted his time on Haydn. GG should have instead completed his projected Scriabin cycle--at least giving us Scriabin's last five exquisite sonatas. Then, GG could have played and over-dubbed and played with his own recording Schoenberg's piano transcriptions of his two chamber symphonies. What a loss for humanity GG trifled with Haydn!
On the other hand, Gould was only a human being: he had his anxieties: perhaps Haydn's simplicities smoothed it out for him.
Anyway, from my view GG could almost do no wrong; therefore, some of you may enjoy these readings. Cheers.

This just is not Haydn.I am referring to the last of the sonatas where Gould is glibly parading his pianistic skills.Sounds more like a practice session.David Hurwitz has rightly called him more or less a joker!Hurwitz is dead wrong in including Joseph Haydn(not Papa Haydn-a condescending phrase)along with Gould.Haydn's sonatas are full of grace and sunny cheerfulness. There are also some incredible tender moments unmatched by any other composer(including Beethoven ,Mozart).Just to illustrate this listen to the same last sonata by Sviatoslav Richter. There is a great yearning and haunting tenderness(Totally murdered here by Gould!).Watch Richter perform this beautiful work in the DVD 'Richter:The Enigma'.Richter clearly explains the greatness of Haydn-The Freshness and Humaneness that is Franz Joseph Haydn.I also recommend Haydn's Piano Trios by the Beaux Arts Trio-Another marvellous collection. For a complete collection of Haydn's Piano sonatas I strongly recommend Jeno Jando on Naxos-Excellently performed and do not miss any of Richter's Haydn Sonatas wherever they are.
Heavy Handed Haydn!.......2005-02-16
This was actually the very first recordings of Haydn's Piano Sonatas that I ever heard. After they heightened my curiousity to a new high, I decided to try other artists performing these great works. First, 1989 and 2003 recordings from Emanual Ax, then Mikhail Pletnev. Compared to the others, Gould seems to give Haydn a heavy touch. At times he really pounds the keys hard! The music is ALWAYS compelling in his hands. Ax and Pletnev have a much softer almost "Chopinish" touch that to me, doesn't always work. Highly recommended!
Interesting recordings.......2004-08-02
Glenn Gould interest for Haydn was for many of his followers a weird challenge . Since Haydn piano music has always been ranked to intermediate priorities for the most of the pianists, his music has been somehow in a kind of zero atmosphere just waiting for someone who really loves his spirit.
The list is really reduced.
In the forties a spectacular hungarian pianist : Eddie Farnadi .
In the fifties , I remind two remarkable pianists: Nadia Reisenberg and Paul Badura Skoda.
In the sixties Backhaus.
In the early seventies , Malcom Frager . But in the last seventies and early eighties Andras Schiff recorded a very important series of Haydn piano works .
In this sense Gould decided to break the prejuices about the naifness about Haydn piano sonatas and certainly he played Haydn without that kind of affection so typical .
His performances became in a revelation . The frehness interpretative , the inherent humor sense , and the remarkable intention in considering a Haydn with his own musical stature and not viewed as a minor Mozart or a composer who belonged to a determined age .
These esthetic considerations affect in superlative degree the final product you play .
Consider for instance two brief examples . Are you sure about the Czerny sonata (Hilda Sommer)is just a minor work ? or the preschumannian sonata Op. 8 of Norbert Burgmuller (Adrian Ruiz) is just a classic and minor piece , only because Burgmuller lived only twenty six years? .
Gould accepted the challenge and won .
Acquire this set and you will be rewarded. Independently if you are a minor admirer about Haydn piano music. You will not be disappointed.
A Meeting of Musical Minds.......2004-05-28
This is my favorite Glenn Gould recording, as well as my favorite recording of any of Haydn's music. In a word, it is...Magical! This is also one of the best piano recordings I have ever heard. The joy, wit and humor of this music simply sparkle through your loudspeakers! You can't help but come away feeling enlightened and refreshed after listening to this disk. This is truly a "meeting of the minds". Although this recording is from the earliest days of digital, it sounds remarkable - whereas most digital recordings from this period sound like s**t. We are blessed that Glenn Gould was able to deliver to us this thoroughly enjoyable recording before his premature demise. I only wish that he had had the chance to record all of Haydn's piano sonatas.

From the review in Gramophone.......2006-12-14
"These recordings are to be counted among the best Alfred Brendel has given us. Listening to all four on CD has been a treat. The presentation of the collection is good too, and Monika Mollering's essay ('Images of Haydn') and notes on the individual sonatas and pieces are a stimulus to enhanced enjoyment of the remarkable qualities of the music. It takes a great player to do justice to its variety, its richness of expression, its wit and its sophistication of form and structure, as Mollering says. Brendel's steady illumination of Haydn is a delight. He is at once a scrupulous and a robust interpreter, setting out from a careful reading of the text to seek the most vivid projection of Haydn's ideas---and I admire especially the way he allows boldness, even daring, to play a part in the search. The playing is alive with a feeling of spontaneity and the capricious side of Haydn is served as generously as the rest of him. 'The perceptiveness and musicality of his playing may well be a revelation even to those who know that Haydn's keyboard sonatas, still shamefully neglected, are every bit as good as Mozart's', was a comment of RG's about the third disc. On the second, RF thought Brendel revealed the E minor as 'one of Haydn's very greatest sonatas'. And about the last sonata, the E flat, on the most recent issue, I said I could imagine Beethoven relishing this performance of it. In sum, marvellous music, its marvels made brilliantly manifest."

This is a lovingly-presented and very touching recording. Solo piano works by such composers as Kabalevsky, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Schumann, and Ravel come together in this collection intended to promote restfulness and calm in both children and adult listeners. With Carol Rosenberger's gentle playing, it succeeds marvellously. This disc is absolutely ideal for bedtime or times of quiet reflection. It might serve well in the car during traffic jams, too. Rather than just throwing together performances packaged on a theme (as a number of record companies are doing), Delos and Rosenberger seem to have tailored the interpretations to achieve the desired musical goal here. The liner notes have a lively section just for young readers. --Gwendolyn Freed

Customer Reviews:
"Real" classical music for little ones.......2003-02-27
I bought this CD for my elder son when he was tiny; he listened to it nightly (and often for afternoon naps), and his little brother is continuing the tradition. What I like best about this compilation is that this is REAL music - real Brahms, Mozart, etc - and not watered-down versions or arrangements of the classics (like the vast majority of "classical" compilations on the market these days). (I suppose I am just a crank about this, but I grew up listening to real music, and I want my kids to do the same.) The performances are gentle and understated - not what you would want in a concert, but just right for sedating a small one.
Very Relaxing, yet still super.......1999-06-16
This CD is just wonderful for babies and adults and children. It has a good blend of music to introduce children to beautiful classical music. I think that the playing is just superb.
Just what we harried ADULTS need to unwind!.......1999-02-12
An almost perfect combination of selections for relaxing background music, which is played frequently as our dinner music.
I would have appreciated a little less "electronic doctoring" as some notes (especially the lower range) don't sound quite "true", but then again it could be my ears!
Anyway, am delighted that it does what it was designed to do...provide an enjoyable time of relaxation. Thanks.
Beautiful bedtime music for babies.......1999-01-04
This CD was given to us as a gift when our daughter was born and we always play it when putting her down for a nap or to sleep for the night. When we travel, we take it along to ensure that she will fall asleep as easily on the road as she does at home. The music is absolutely lovely and very soothing for infants and adults alike. We even ordered a second copy in case we were ever to lose or wear out the first one!
Peaceful, beautiful, soothing piano music.......1998-10-22
This is one of the most peaceful, soothing and beautiful CD's I have ever heard. I think it would put you or your baby to sleep every night. The music selection is wonderful and the artist has a beautiful technique on the piano. I loved it.

Nice Set...not a great performance.......2005-05-08
As a pianist myself, I was very interested to listen to Mr. McCabe when preparing my M.M. degree recital, in which I performed Haydn's Sonata in E minor, Hob:XVI/34 (I will refer to the sonata by the Landon number rather than the older Hoboken number).
Mr. McCabe certainly plays quite cleanly, as one would expect in this day and age. In addition, he provides extensive program notes (Mr. McCabe is a respected musicologist)
Unfortunately, Mr. McCabe isn't quite the performer one would expect to produce the entire output of Haydn's Sonatas. First of all, his tempos are usually not well suited to the music's style (whether in the Allegros or Adagios). Though this has somewhat to due with his lesser technical ability, it also has to do with his idea of interpretation, which to say the least, is quite boring. In the Sonata No. 34, the opening movement has a very particular character. Though it is one of Haydn's few sonatas in a minor key, the opening motive returns in many forms throughout the first movement. Mr. McCabe seems to miss the point of this, along with the importance of articulation (which is of utmost importance in the music of Haydn).
Mr. McCabe uses far too much pedal throughout (especially in the first movement). In the second movement, his imprecise pedaling detracts from the recitative quality (this movement being influenced from Haydn's knowledge of vocal writing and operatic traditions). The third movement is quite slow and the lively character is missing.
I don't believe that one can put Mr. McCabe's recordings on a level with great Haydn interpreters such as Ax or even Richter (with far more color and more adherence to the musical style). This is unfortunate as it comes from such a respected musicologist.
As a final note, it is nice to own this collection to have all Haydn's Sonatas and his output for piano at your fingertips, but I would recommend Ax (or Andsnes in the future...his Haydn Concertos are fantastic).
Much unknown music to assimilate.......2005-04-19
I can partially share one reviewer's opinion that much of this music seems repetitive and certainly that is somewhat the case, but I only listen to one disc at a sitting. It takes time to get to know these sonatas. The Mozart sonatas are more widely performed, and therefore known to the music listening public. At this point in my experience, I must admit that I prefer the Mozart sonatas, but I am gaining an appreciation for those of Haydn.
The quality of the recording is good with very little background noise or noticeable distortion. The piano seem OK for the type of music and if one reviewer thinks these are twangy, listen to these sonatas on an eighteenth century pianoforte.
Mr. McCabe is a competent player without any idiosyncracies which seems in keeping with these sonatas.
I received a boxed set that had two disc sixes and no disc three. Ah, German precision.
the greatest penny a note composer.......2005-04-02
I have listened to all 62 sonatas for keyboard and perhaps 3 of them rise to the level of wonderful composition. If you listen to them you hear he doesn't really "get started " until about sonata 32, compared with say Beethoven who except for 3 or 4 composed 32 of the greatest piano sonatas the world will ever hear. I have attempted to give Haydn a fair hearing for symphonic ( boring ) and keyboard works but for the most part he must get the award for not really being able to put 2 consecutive asthetic notes together. The Nelson Mass is very nice. And I know in his last years, Europe just adored him. He was earning upward in todays dollars of $85,000, which just galled Mozart. Finally the sonatas are performed and recorded well. Before purchasing these sonatas listen to the clips and see if you dont want to run screaming into the night, but if you are a boring person with absolutely no musical asthetic, these sonatas cant be beat!
The best complete set of Haydn Sonatas at any price.......2004-05-22
Other individual performances may "grab" you more than these, but as a whole I could not find fault with these performances. They are particularly satisfying if you follow with a score - you get to see the choices in ornamentation, dynamics, etc. that McCabe makes compared with what is on the printed page. I did several comparisons with other performers (I own 4 complete sets of these sonatas and several smaller compilations), and McCabe consistently comes out on top overall, in my opinion. Haydn's best sonatas are consistently more inventive, witty, and daring than Mozart's and are definitely worth your attention.
Excellent performances of rarely heard works.......2004-05-16
Rich & delicious entertainment. Delighted that one can enjoy this beautiful music of pieces which are rarely publicly performed.

Jeno Jando Plays Early Haydn Sonatas.......2007-06-23
This CD is a delightful recording of the earliest keyboard sonatas attributed to Haydn. The sonatas are "attributed" to Haydn because scholars have questions about the authenticity of at least some of them. In addition, the sonatas cannot be precisely dated. They are generally thought to be composed with 1766 as an outside limit. More likely, these works were composed in the late 1750s and early 1760s.
These types of questions should not deter you from enjoying these works. They are light, flowing, graceful, and accessible. The sonatas were composed at the beginning of the classical period and exemplify the galant style that developed as a reaction to the difficulties of the contrapuntal music of the baroque era. The sonatas were originally composed for the harpsichord, but they work well on the piano as this CD shows. Jeno Jando beautifully plays these early works as part of his recording of the complete Haydn piano sonatas on Naxos. Jando has recorded prolifically for Naxos over the years. He is at his best in Haydn.
The CD includes ten sonatas, all of which are in the major key. Each work is short, ranging from under five minutes for each of the first two sonatas to about nine minutes for the sixth sonata. Sonata no. 9 consists of two movements while the first sonata consists of four very brief movements. The remaining eight sonatas are in three movements.
The works include some interesting variations in structure. The four-movement sonata no. 1 is in the pattern allegro-minuet-andante-allegro. The sonatas typically open with a fast movement, but two works, no. 6 and 9 begin moderato. One of favorites of these works, no. 7 in D major, opens with a theme and variations. The second movement of most of the works is generally a minuet which ususally, but not always, includes a trio section. In sonatas 5 and 10, a slow movement appears rather than the minuet. The finale is almost always quick and lively. But here again there are exceptions. Sonatas 5, 9, and 10 end with a minuet while sonata no. 3 ends with a scherzo. Furthermore, Haydn cannabalized among these sonata, as he would do throughout his career. The final movement of sonata no. 4 becomes the opening presto of the next work, sonata no. 5.
The circumstances for which these works were composed also is obscure. Some of the sonatas were probably written for drawing-room performance. But several of them likely were composed as teaching pieces, either for Haydn's early young pupils or for family members or courtiers at the Morin or Esterhazy courts. Whatever the case, this is music to be enjoyed rather than to be over-intellectualized.
This CD is lovely to hear and makes an excellent introduction to the early classical style for keyboard. It offers an excellent lead-in to Haydn's mature piano sonatas or to his earliest symphonies that probably date from the time of these sonatas.

Delicate and satisfying.......2006-06-13
Jando gives these sonatas a light yet pleasing touch. They certainly glide along and seem to rythmically resonate in some way - they just seem 'right'. Having heard these versions I can't imagine anyone else playing them.
Having heard several of the other volumes of Jando/Haydn, I can say that this is my favourite so far - and at least one co-worker rushed out and bought the CD after I bought it to work.
I highly recommend this disc to Haydn fans and those who would enjoy an hour of sublimely played, elegant piano sonatas.
Charming.......2005-11-20
These attractive sonatas receive beautiful performances from Jando. The previous reviewer had a quibble regarding tracks 13 and 14 being the same; but, in fact, Haydn made the finale to Sonata # 4 the opening movement of # 5.
Piano Sonatas of the Highest Caliber!.......2005-06-17
I find Jeno Janos' series of Haydn's Piano sonatas very entertaining. In fact, there is only a small handful of pianist's that have recorded these earliest sonatas and IMHO I couldn't imagine better performances! They are all short and sweet. If you enjoy early Mozart, you will certainly love these works! My only quibble is that tracks 13 and 14 are exactly the same. Maybe the engineers at Naxos should pay more attention!

Naxos isn't recording Haydn's piano sonatas in order, but the first three volumes are all devoted to his late sonatas. These are generally shorter than the ones in Volume 1, which is why there are six sonatas here instead of four. Otherwise, the same comments apply to this disc as to the first. Just because Haydn's forms here are somewhat more compressed than in the last sonatas doesn't mean these are inferior pieces, just that they are shorter. And once again, Jenö Jandó never sounds as though he is just reading through the music; he knows each piece and gives it its own character. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
The playing is graceful, trim and alert........2001-02-18
Naxos numbers these sonatas as 42 to 47 in their series of the complete keyboard sonatas of Haydn, played by Jenö Jandó. They were written by Haydn between 1774 and 1776, and originally published as a set of six. During these same years Mozart also composed six keyboard sonatas, K. 279 to K 284. The Haydn set is particularly interesting and rewarding for both player and listener. Haydn was discovering ways of providing interest in all parts of the musical texture, from bass to treble, disposing almost entirely of the broken chord pattern that had formerly occupied the left hand throughout.
I haven't compared Jandó's Haydn series with those of other pianists, but I am certainly happy to own all that have been issued in his series so far. The playing is graceful, trim and alert. The sonatas in Volume 2, each in a different key, were recorded in 1993, and the total listening time is 72 minutes.
Jandó's Haydn -- Sheer Delight Coupled with Intensity........2000-08-11
Until I heard Jenö Jandó's recordings of Haydn's Piano Sonatas, I had found them rather dull and lacklustre. I now realise that the reason for this is that a piece does not properly come alive until a performer puts away his or her ego and plays as the composer wants it played (Alfred Brendel take note!). Surely this is precisely what Jandó does. I remember the moment that I first heard Jandó's interpretation of Haydn. It was on a program of new releases on BBC Radio 3. Within seconds, I was on the edge of my seat, laughing with joy, with tears in my eyes. This is how it should be played! I wanted to write to Jandó immediately and tell him how grateful I was to him for opening my eyes to the beauty of Haydn. What a delight it was to discover that Haydn had written 62 piano sonatas for us to spend time exploring. One finds here a pleasing mixture of the influences of the perfectionist Scarlatti and the Sturm und Drang composer C.P.E. Bach, with Haydn's own hallmarks added. According to Robbins Landon, Haydn used to pray to God every morning for inspiration before he began composing. He certainly received it! Although Volume 1 contains the last four sonatas (which are arguably the best), this Vol. 2 is also full of great things. It would take more space than I am permitted if I was to review all the sonatas on this CD, but I will make special mention of No.47 in B minor, as it was this very sonata which so moved me on that radio program. This is an astounding piece, and wonderfully played by Jandó with real intensity. The first subject of the first movement is unusual, with a dark left hand motto hammering away underneath. One of the principal characteristics of Haydn's piano sonatas is the way that he screws up the tension at the end of the development section of the first movements on the way to the recapitulation. This is again the case in the B minor sonata. A lovely aspect of Haydn's piano sonatas is the jewel-like clarity of one's place in the music. Everything is so shiningly laid out that you always know just where you are; and because of the telescoped brevity (mostly 3 to 4 minutes), each sonata first movement is like a microcosmic world in itself. Development sections are often so short -- even shorter than the exposition! Yet everything is in its place and perfect. Anyone familiar with these pieces will know exactly what I mean. At the end of the coda of this first movement -- for all its B minor intensity -- one feels a sense of accomplishment and excellence as the final minor chord is hammered out. The slow movement -- something of an intermezzo -- is in minuet form, remarkable for its nervous little trio in the minor key. It is in the Presto finale that the power of the piece breaks out. This is the moment for virtuosity to fly. In just three minutes, Haydn (with Jandó's able help) takes us on an exhausting journey at breakneck speed. Again, as in the first movement, the left hand figures strongly as a descending forte bass line is etched into the heart of the listener. Composers usually mean business when they compose in the key of B minor. Jandó plainly recognises this; and one is left with the impression that he has pulled out all the stops -- not only for this final Presto movement, but for the entire piece. This ten minute sonata is the one with which to turn skeptics on to Haydn. My wife is a cellist and vary rarely plays anything on the piano. But after sharing my joy in Jandó's Haydn, she couldn't wait to obtain the score to play them through herself. I hope I have enthused enough to inspire you to do likewise! It is fair to point out that Richard Brautigum has begun an excellent series of these sonatas on an old fortepiano (also available from Amazon). Period instrument freaks will delight in his definitive performances. But out of all the versions on a modern instrument, Jando is definitely the pianist to go for. The acoustic of the Unitarian church in Budapest is bright and responsive. Five stars, without hesitation.
