With his customized eight-string, Paul Galbraith has made some of the most inventive classical guitar discs to date. His take on Bach's lute suites is certainly no different. Here, Galbraith deftly arranges and performs four suites (BWV 995-998) in his impeccably precise yet smooth style. Recording quality is superb and sensitive microphones seem to capture Galbraith's every note (and breath). Unfortunately, some Bach lovers may miss the deep and dark sound of the lute, as well as the intricacies of these pieces' phrasings. While Galbraith's technique is certainly flawless, he has difficulty capturing the varying moods these works evoke. Still, this is a gorgeous disc for lovers of classical guitar and a great introduction to these seldom-heard lute suites. And, if this strikes your fancy, check out Galbraith's disc of Bach's solo violin sonatas and partitas. --Jason Verlinde

A great introduction to Baroque music..........2005-10-04

This CD contains a great sampling of Baroque music. Some of the best known songs of the period are included. Listeners will likely instantly recognize many of the songs (you've likely heard them before, you just didn't know their names). An excellent rendition of Pachelbel's Canon starts off the CD. Then plenty of music from big names such as Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi fill out the disc's 72 and a half minutes of music.

The demographics of this disc point to an intended mainstream audience. For example, the track listing includes references to which songs served as themes for television shows. For example, Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 includes the byline "Theme from 'Firing Line'" and Mouret's Rondeau says "Theme from 'Masterpiece Theater'". So this collection does represent a popular collection of Baroque songs. And it plays that role very well.

Other standout tracks include: 2 movements from Vivaldi's justifiably famous "The Four Seasons", Bach's amazing "Air on the G String" and Handel's "Xerxes". The disc includes no vocal tracks. "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" from Bach's Cantata No. 147 gets performed on a solo organ (the original has vocals and a string arrangement). So those uneasy with "classical style singing" will find no problems here.

All in all, this disc serves as a good introduction to a great period of music history. It could also serve as a starting point for selecting a favorite composer or as a guide for building a classical music collection.

Good "best of" CD, but nothing more........2001-09-27

This CD does what it says it does: it gives you a brief, excellently recorded overview of the Baroque. But remember, this is just bits and pieces of a great store of music.

This CD will whet your appetite. You'll need to buy more, after you've heard the excerts of the great works here.

Pachelbel's Canon in D is always good but the rest of the tracks shine as well. This is a superb collection of classical music. If you're new to classical music and love strings, purchase this CD. You'll be glad that you did.

DEFINES "CLASSIC".......2000-05-26

We have all heard the infinitely moving Canon in D by Pachelbel hundreds of times - it is not surprising that it has appeared, in one form or another, in commercials, films (most notably Ordinary People, which used the main theme as the underscoring for the entire film) - it is perfect, simple and incredibly, undeniably moving. But you are in for more treats on this basic Baroque sampler, which features many popular themes you may know, despite the fact that you may not be a hard-core classical music buff. The joy of each and every one of these cuts lies in their simple, enduring melodies and the gorgeous musical settings provided here. They sound fresh, new and as contemporary as anything you might hear on the radio. This album has a holiday after-effect as well; the fanfares, hymns and exciting instrumentation (horns, harps, strings galore) make you feel as if it is Christmas every day.

Very Refined Yet Not Uncharming - One of Her Best Performances.......2007-03-27

Ms Hewitt has never quite swept me away, and she certainly does nothing here to suggest she is a legendary pianist. However, she is very at ease with these works, and brings to them quite a bit of charm and piquancy. She's convincing and - my most important criteria for rating any CD - relistenable. The music itself is fresh and delightful, as charming as anything in all of Bach - he could be very charming indeed: though for too many Bach is revered as serious and intellectual. Anyway, these are nice performances and perhaps it's just my personal taste, but I find Ms Hewitt's efforts here in the lighter keyboard repetoire of Bach easier to accept than most of her efforts in the French repetoire.
The great performances of Bach's French Suites remain those of long ago - Helmut Wacha on the harpsichord, but those are not currently available in America.

Lovely, heartfelt Bach.......2005-11-07

Bach's music weaves together many elements: heartfelt story-telling, intellectual fascination, inspiring technique, and joyful dance. My favorite Bach interpreters are those who can reveal the innate sensitivity of Bach's music, and Angela does that superbly. Her tone is always singing, her dance rhythms will set even Grandma to jumping and cavorting, and her emotional connection so intimate I thought it was my mother singing to me in the cradle.

I particularly like that her technique never becomes showy in itself; even the difficult final Gigue of Suite 5 is purely about dance and joy.

Her ornaments are always tasteful. Not easy to do with Bach, when you consider that ornamenting is a form of composition.. and to ornament well, one is essentially adding to Bach's composition.

Her interpretation of Bach on the piano (as opposed to the harpsichord, for which is was written) is absolutely convincing.

This is my first CD purchase of Angela's Bach, and I plan to get them all.

Elegant Artistry .......2005-08-14

Recorded early in Angela Hewitt's Bach cycle, the popular French Suites (along with the "Little Preludes" and other two more dynamic virtuoso pieces) take a step back from the more serious and complex fugal compositions of Bach and settle into the restrained elegance of the courtly and rustic dances of the era. Although Bach never titled these works as "French," the suites take much of their inspritation from the various "dance" forms of music in that period (French mainly) that form each suite: the processional German-inspired allemandes ... the stately French courantes ... the spicier Italian correntes ... the slow and meditative sarabandes of Spanish-origin ... the French-aristocratic minuets, gavottes and airs ... the bouncy and free-spirited bourrees ... and, to close the suite, the most musically serious French gigues (inspired by the English 'jig'). The three minor-key suites take a more introverted flavor while the three major-key suites are more extraverted and bright. Suites 5 and 6 are perhaps the most popular for their bright, major-key sounds.

Every generation has its one or two Bach legends, and for the 'boomer generation,' one of them is certainly Angela Hewitt. Her poised playing finds its natural home here and wonderfully matches the spirit of this elegant, gentle and noble music. Her decorative touches are pure artistry and always delightfully enhance the atmosphere of the music without detracting or distracting. Penguin Guide gave this set their "Recommended Recording" of all the available recordings of the French Suites. It all just sounds "right" for this type of music. Addtionally, the sound quality is clear and without extraneous noise and has a somewhat-spacious but pleasant ambiance.

The so-called "Little Preludes" were exercises for Bach's son or pupils but really are not so "little" in terms of style or substance. Most are light and delightful - with some pure charm (BWV933). Notably Hewitt makes them all sound - not as mere exercises - but as viable performances in themselves. On a more virtuostic scale are the "filler works" on this CD: the Sonata in D minor and the Prelude/Fugue in A minor - the former being transcribed from the solo violin sonata in A minor (BWV 1003) and the latter being a work Bach later encorporated into the "Triple Concerto (BWV 1044, on Hewitt's Bach Concertos Vol. I). The closing allegro of the Sonata is a highlight and is played by Hewitt with an effortless radiance. Her galloping triplets and ever-so delicate and deft shifts in dynamics and touch here create the famous Bach "echo" that gives a facinating and larger-than-life quality to the movement. All-in-all, a most pleasant, accessible and artistic recording from one of the most talented pianists playing Bach today.

If you are trying to sort out Bach's great solo keyboard music, you can characterize them like this in general: the FRENCH SUITES are overall the most refined, elegant and 'restrained' musically (French courtly style) as compared to the more dynamic preludes and dances in the ENGLISH SUITES (but also having haughtingly-beautiful sarabandes to contrast). Along with the great showpieces, CHROMATIC FANTASY & FUGUE in C minor, the PARTITAS and the TOCCATAS are certainly the most outright virtuostic of the sets - with the latter being the most free of form and the most extemporaneous sounding. The two books of Bach's "WELL-TEMPERED CLAVIER" are in a class of their own from the often-charming preludes in Book I to the most complex musical-intelligence contained in the fugues of Book II. Bach's WTC is both systematic and pedogogic but also delightfully lyrical and often deeply meditative and is essential music in any piano-loving human being. This wide range of contrasting emotional qualities (movements) is really characteristic of nearly all of Bach's keyboard music and is most marvelously showcased in the legenday 30 GOLDBERG VARIATIONS. All of Angela Hewitt's Bach recordings are excellent (no 'dogs') and are consistently rated among the top 2 or 3 choices in the field. Hard to go wrong with any really.

Hewitt or Gould.......2004-09-29

Angela Hewitt is often compared to Glenn Gould, her fellow Canadian pianist, because she also plays Bach. I won't compare them. When I listen to Gould I marvel at his genius. When I listen to Hewitt, I marvel at Bach's genius.

Extraordinary.......2005-12-21

Well, I must admit my review is a little bias since I am a classical guitar enthusiast and a huge Bach fan. Bream's playing of the lute suite in Em is beautiful. This cd can serve as a nice background score while dining with your girlfriend, or as a technical performance heard with your headphones on, eyes closed, and full attention given. If you love classical music and/or the sound of a clean acoustic guitar under the arm of someone who has mastered the art of the instrument, I highly recommend this!

Just WONDERFUL.......2006-02-01

Williams is a Hi-quality Guitar Master. This master piece has a very good sound and recording (you must know that is a CBS Records one). I was trying to find a CD that includes the most of the Bach Lute Suites Songs and i found it. In fact, this is the best interpretation of the Bach's Bourreé.

Still 30 years later -THE Bach Lute Suites recording!.......2004-12-29

I rarely take the time to post a review here or anywhere for lack of time, even though I usually read other reviewers' feedback. As I sit down and re-listen to Willliams' Bach recording now after many years of not doing so - while coincidentally reading these wonderful baroque compositions for my own performances - I feel compelled to write some impressions on it.

Without going into painful/extensive details, I agree with many that this is THE BACH recording all guitarists will always be measured against - and for good reason!

These 1975 John Williams' breathtaking performances are absolutely astonishing - particularly that of Suite BWV 996. Just listen to the opening Prelude and closing Gigue in E Minor... not to mention the Gigue-Double on A Minor BWV 997.

While it is true that you may find more densely ornamented or studious renditions of Bach, John Williams plays this music with such panache, precision and stoppable forward movement that it never sounds dated...

If you don't have this record - BUY IT!

I think it's silly to ask for a definitive or "standard" Bach recording. The Bach of John Williams, Andre Segovia, Ron Rendek, Christopher Parkening, and so on is different and must be judged on its own terms without respect to a "standard" so long as due allegiance to the printed music is maintained. In any case, this is an excellent rendition of the suites I can recommend without significant reservation.

Bach par excellence.......2004-06-10

John Williams' musicianship is amazing. You won't find gimmicks here -- no wilful rubatos, forceful crescendo/descrescendo for emphasis, harsh nail attack. But listen instead for the subtle articulation, carefully placed (yet unobtrusive) vibrato on individual notes in scale fragments, the rhythmic pulse and the sense of forward motion (his feet don't touch the ground until it's time to land).

Articulation is a means of expression that is sorely lacking in many guitarists. This may be why Williams' playing doesn't go well with today's audiences. But articulation and rhythmic subtlety have been the mainstay of harpsichord, fortepiano and organ players for ages. Guitarists can benefit as well.

My only complaint is that he takes the Allemande from the e minor suite too quickly.

I also own Sollscher's recording. There is a spaciousness in the sound painting, and his articulation is well cultivated, too. What he lacks is rhythmic drive and the sense of forward motion.

Bach on Guitar Without the Ego.......2003-12-03

This is the stuff that got me into classical guitar -- Johann Sebastian Bach played by John Williams. Say whatever you want, this CD rocks. In an age where everyone and their grandmother is producing yet another version of the lute suites (on guitars of all different strings and sizes) William's 1975 recording, I have found, remains the faithful ground from which all others spring.

I felt compelled to write this review in defense to all the negative criticism posted here. I was floored to read the accusations of "lack of soul" and the badmouthing of William's technique. These statements are ridiculous; John Williams is a superb artist, his playing is technically solid, his sound wonderfully bold, and his phrasing logical and true to the contrapunctal spirit of Bach. True, he may not flaunt the fiery chops of an Elliot Fisk or the precision of Paul Gailbraith -- but why compare apples with oranges? Williams gives us a warm humanity with a keen respect for the music. The playing, in this aspect, is first rate.

The E minor Prealudium and Presto open the disc, and Williams sets the mood with a big, wonderful sound and by letting the music play itself. It becomes relaxingly clear from the first 30 seconds that this is NOT going to be another "show-off" Bach recording. He rolls the chords tastefully, he resolves the intense cadences with proper baroque spirit, and his trills and ornaments are right on the money. When he busts into the fuguelike Presto, his technique is rock solid and the dignified counterpoint and powerful sequences have great confidence as the music comes alive. He closes the suite with the infamous Gigue, a true knuckle buster for even the most advanced guitarist to manage at a brisk tempo. Williams handles it with ease, every note rings true, and the phrasing is soulfully admirable.
A few more comments in closing: The second lute suite's Preludio and Fugue alone are worth the meager purchase! The music is quite possibly the greatest ever written (the fugue is huge, complex, thrilling, and de capo). Bach wrote the music in Leipzig on a keyboard instrument built to mimic the baroque lute. The way Williams plays the works, you would think he was on a keyboard, so clean and persuasive are the notes!
The only real flaw I've detected on the CD comes during the Gigue and Double at the end of the second suite where he buzzes the low F (big freakin whoop). Again, very human, hence very intimate.

I thouroughly enjoy this CD! The music is beautiful enough to listen to all by itself, but also quiet and peaceful enough to listen to while studying for exams or doing homework. Mad about Baroque has been in my discman for many weeks and accompanied to the library many times. This is a great CD!

With his customized eight-string, Paul Galbraith has made some of the most inventive classical guitar discs to date. His take on Bach's lute suites is certainly no different. Here, Galbraith deftly arranges and performs four suites (BWV 995-998) in his impeccably precise yet smooth style. Recording quality is superb and sensitive microphones seem to capture Galbraith's every note (and breath). Unfortunately, some Bach lovers may miss the deep and dark sound of the lute, as well as the intricacies of these pieces' phrasings. While Galbraith's technique is certainly flawless, he has difficulty capturing the varying moods these works evoke. Still, this is a gorgeous disc for lovers of classical guitar and a great introduction to these seldom-heard lute suites. And, if this strikes your fancy, check out Galbraith's disc of Bach's solo violin sonatas and partitas. --Jason Verlinde

I agree with most of the reviews for this item, but have to say its shocking how many believe that Galbraith's playing is 'unemotional'. You must surely find every piano recording of Bach unemotional as well?! Guitarists too often hold the notion that unless each bar is dripping with cliched, overly-romantic rubato, the playing is 'cold'. How many riduculous examples are there of the ridiculous idea that John Williams is 'cold'? If anyone bothered actually listening instead of 'critiquing' (sic) they would realise that what Galbraith and Williams aim for is an emotional response, derivide from a concept of the work as a whole! We associate ourselves too much with the violin. Realise that Bach on the guitar has nothing to do with Bach on the violin. The main problem violinists face is in realising contrapuntal music, and the thing which comes most naturally to them is the turning and 'milking' of each phrase. Guitar is FAR more akin to piano in its rendering of Bach. Contrapuntal lines should be no problem for guitarists, yet so many recordings of Bach by guitarists neglect the inner voices, the bass, etc, as if they are somehow less important than the soprano line! If more guitarists would treat the lute suites and the violin partitas/sonatas with a contrapuntal concept as clear and well-thought as Galbraith, then the truth would be apparent to all: that the violin music of Bach is much better on guitar! (or at least closer to a contrapuntal ideal.) Segovia showed us the wonderfull violin-like palette of colours on the guitar, why can't people be grateful for somone like Galbraith, who shows us the Guitar as more the relation of a keyboard instrument?

For god's sake, listen to Gould, people! Beauty is inherent in the music - subtlety is often the key to a truly wonderful realisation.

Worth hearing - good but not great.......2005-04-11

First of all, Galbraith does not play all four Bach Lute Suites in this recording: He plays three plus the Prelude, Fugue and Allegro. The missing suite, BWV 1006a, is on his recording of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas.

That said, Galbraith's recording of the Bach Lute Suites recording is a definite improvement over his recording of the Bach Suites and Partitas which I thought metronomic, technically proficient but emotionally distant with no sense of Bach. His phrasing in the Bach Lute Suites ebbs and flows; it "breathes." He seems more comfortable, more familiar with this music than the transcribed Partitas and Sonatas - and it shows. This is a version worth hearing, good, but not as fine as those of John Williams or Sharon Isbin (the latter both on a six string guitar). I haven't heard Stephen Schmidt who plays the Suites on a 10 string guitar, supposedly very well. There also is a very fine recording of two of the Suites by Julian Bream, along with tasteful and delightful transcriptions of two of the Bach Trio Sonatas for organ, performed by Bream on lute and George Malcom on harpsichord. It is still available on Amazon but otherwise unfortunately out of print. There also is a recording, on Naxos, of the Bach Fourth Lute Suite (BWV 1006a) by Ana Vidovic which is technically dazzling if not musically as fine as the Bream, John Williams or Sharon Isbin recordings. Vidovic made that recording years ago; she has grown considerably, and I'd love to hear her Bach now.

None better........2004-08-05

As a student of classical guitar, I can safely say that Paul Galbraith is about the best guitarist around when it comes to playing Bach. You will not be disapointed with any of his recordings.

Pure joy!.......2004-07-31

It has been close to a century since the Bach lute suites were first transcribed for the classical guitar by Agustin Barrios, and along the way there have been countless recordings of these works over the years, but if I have to chose just one, it will have to be this recording.

Galbraith plays on a 8-string guitar, compared with the usual 6-string guitar, and his technique relies on him holding guitar in a cello-like manner, but what results! His control of the music is breathtaking, with the different contrapuntal lines clearly differentiated both in volume and articulation.It's so good that at times it seems as if there are separate guitarists playing each counterpoint. His tone is clear and bright, complementing the textures of the music itself rather than supplanting it.

His interpretations are mostly understated, letting the music of Bach speak for itself rather than imposing his own will on it. You get the feeling that it's Bach himself speaking rather than the guitarist, The range of emotions run the gamut from spiritual introspection in the Prelude of the Em suite to the joyful exuberance of the Allegro of the Eb major suite.

His extra 2 strings allow him to give more solidity and resonance to the music, and his playing is absolutely clean and flawless. My only nitpick is that his breathing can sometimes be heard in a few of the tracks, but it's something I can easily forgive.

I'm an amateur classical guitarist, but I definitely feel that this recording deserves a wider audience. I have been listening to this almost all the time since I got it, and it seems even more enjoyable and incredible with each listening.

Whether you're a guitarist or just a Bach fan, do yourself a favor and get yourself this recording.

Technical Brilliance.......2002-01-26

About 20 years ago a friend of mine claimed that Bachs Lute suites were some of Bach's greatest works. This may be a bit overstated, but they all have a breath of moments, emotions and sonority that is worth many listenings. Over the years each of the suites seem to me akin to a warm, familiar poem.

Paul has certainly conquered the suites with dazzling technique. There are many complex and beguiling passages and he plays each with certainty. At times this makes the music seem a little sterile, however; the Suite in C and the Fugue are brilliant both in analysis and execution. I have never heard these works performed with such unity of vision.

I hope Paul re-records these in about 10 years.
