Ethel is the name of a new quartet of string players devoted, for the most part, to performing music by their contemporaries; in a way, they're very much like the Kronos. Their absorption in music of all kinds gives them a wonderful edge. They run the gamut, professionally, from being in the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Steve Reich Ensemble to backing up The Who's Roger Daltrey and Sheryl Crow. On their debut album, we hear John King's "Sweet Hardwood," which is deeply rooted in blues and is played with great, gutsy, feeling; a four-movement piece by John Kline that is in minimalist tradition and whose rhythms are infectious; a strange, brief work ("uh…it all happened so fast") by one of their violinists, Todd Reynolds, which begins down, dark and cavernously in the low strings and develops with great vibrancy; and Evan Ziporyn's 1991 "Be-in," in which they're joined by Ziporyn on bass clarinet (its lyrical chugging manages to be both reassuring and jittery at once). When it's over, you want to hear it again. The music and performances on this CD are both earthy and poetic and worth listening to often. --Robert Levine

Considered by many to be the last great musical comedy, Gypsy tells the backstage tale of vaudeville entertainer turned stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and her overbearing mother, Rose. Stephen Sondheim's lyrics--composed in advance of Jule Styne's infectious music--provide a tight structure and natural language to the 1959 score, which produced more than its share of Broadway standards, including "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Small World," "Some People," "If Momma Was Married," "Together Wherever We Go," and the climactic "Rose's Turn." Although the role of Rose has seen subsequent memorable interpretations by Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and Bette Midler, the show was written for Ethel Merman, and she remains the definitive stage mother.

For this 1999 release, the recording has been remastered with numerous short passages restored and four tracks added. Merman sings alternate lyrics to "Some People" and a medley of "Mr. Goldstone" and "Little Lamb," all with piano accompaniment. Two other tracks are songs cut in tryouts: "Momma's Talking Soft" (gently swung here by Laura Leslie) was a duet for June and Louise that provides some context to the later line "Momma's talking loud," while "Nice She Ain't" is crooned by Bernie Knee, who is infinitely more suave than Jack Klugman ever would have been. Expanded to 63 minutes, this essential cast recording is now even more essential. --David Horiuchi

Gypsy remains one of the very finest musicals ever produced. With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim how could you go wrong? Well, they certainly didn't go wrong; and this original cast recording proves it.

I agree with people who believe that the overture for this musical is one of the finest ever written. It flows beautifully and seamlessly through portions of many of the musical arrangements for the songs in this musical. Impressive!

The musical score on this CD contains many songs that to this day remain instantly recognizable. "Let me Entertain You;" "Some People;" "Small World;" "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Together Wherever We Go" boast those catchy Jule Styne melodies and incredible lyrics that only Sondheim could have written.

"Let Me Entertain You" is the first song on this CD; and Ethel Merman as Mama Rose with Jacqueline Mayro as Baby June and Karen Moore as Baby Louise perform this flawlessly. The song flows so naturally that you completely believe that the two young girls are truly being coached by their domineering mother as they rehearse for a kiddie show in a vaudeville theater. Ethel Merman delivers "Some People" very convincingly; it is here that we see the first undeniable evidence that Merman was born to play Mama Rose. Merman belts out this song passionately as only she could; Merman blows the roof off the house.

Other great songs on this CD include the beautifully arranged "Small World" which is performed with great sensitivity by Ethel Merman as Jack Klugman joins in to make the song even more romantic; the moving "If Momma Was Married" by Sandra Church and Lane Bradbury as they deeply wish for a reprieve from their pushy stage mother; "Everything's Coming Up Roses" sung without a single superfluous note by Ethel Merman and "Together Wherever We Go" performed by Ethel Merman, Jack Klugman and Sandra Church.

Ethel Merman also delivers one especially powerful number at the end of the musical, "Rose's Turn." Merman's voice remains as strong, vibrant and passionate as ever as her character laments that things didn't turn out as happily as she had planned. The musical arrangement underscores Mama Rose's descent into a type of nervous breakdown as Mama Rose performs her swan song.

The CD continues with four bonus tracks that include entire numbers that originally wound up on the cutting room floor. These tracks add color to the original cast recording and enable the listener to hear even the slightest of differences editors made as they rushed to release the LP only one week after Gypsy opened at The Broadway Theater. Look for some interesting changes in "Some People;" "Mr. Goldstone/Little Lamb;" as well as two songs that were dropped from this production of Gypsy entitled "Mama's Talking Soft" and "Nice She Ain't." Excellent bonuses!

The sound quality is rather good although there were times when I could hear minor surface noise in the background. The liner notes offer black and white pictures from Gypsy and essays by Martin Gottfried and Tom Shepard. There are liner notes reprinted from the original LP jacket by George B. Dale, too.

Gypsy was produced several times more after this production closed. However, this is the definitive version because Ethel Merman carries the show with her zesty and powerful voice. Nobody could or ever will touch Ethel Merman as the quintessential Mama Rose.

I highly recommend this CD for fans of original cast recordings of great Broadway musicals; and of course Ethel Merman fans will thrill to these superlative numbers.

Enjoy!

One of the best scores ever written for the stage!

5 out of 5 stars One of the all-time greats, but it needs a new Kleigl light.......2006-03-17

Despite its front-and-center place in the theatrical pantheon, one wonders if we can really do "Gypsy" justice anymore. A lot of termites have invaded the flats. For one thing it mysteriously morphed into a gay musical. That's because it's "about" an overbearing stage mother who was first played by a famous loudmouth. Well, that's simplistic. But "Gypsy" staged right is not about bossy broads; it's about vaudeville, and burlesque, and the heartache and triumph of reaching the top. It's also about stripping. We seem to have lost track of that given the long line of actresses who've tried in vain to overthrow Ethel Merman's memory: Roz Russell (too low-key and literary), Angela Lansbury (too British), Tyne Daly (too coarse), Bette Midler (too kitschy), Bernadette Peters...what's she doing there? Actually, she belongs there -- not as Mama Rose. Thirty-five years younger she could (and should) have played Gypsy. (John Simon, reviewing the misbegotten 2003 revival, noted a definite facial resemblance.) We forget too the stroke of genius that ends this show. Gypsy, having utterly wowed them at Minsky's, is "topped" by her own mother! So, this is a contest -- and a contest requires more than one person. What "Gypsy" deserves is two great actresses. Ethel Merman's hold on the memory of her part is safe. Now -- who here can tell me who played Gypsy? Natalie Wood, well, that's easy enough. But was she memorable? One thinks of how the real Gypsy denigrated Sandra Church. What this show needs is for people to stop approaching it as a strong-woman musical, and more as the story of a stripper's rise to stardom. Maybe the time has come to put the emphasis on Gypsy, and get comely actresses who know how to strip. Perhaps the writers of this unquestioned landmark chose the wrong work; they should have done William Wellman's "Lady of Burlesque" (based on Gypsy's ghosted mystery novel "The G-String Murders" -- there's a title!). That way it would have been all fun, and no overbearing significance, or stage mothers. Hmmm: Barbara Stanwyck as Gypsy? There's a thought.

But I've discussed the property when I should be discussing the cast album. There's little to say. People who call this the greatest show ever are being silly. Perhaps it is as an integrated whole. There are better scores. Indeed Jule Styne wrote better tunes; go back to his work with Sammy Cahn, and go back especially to that Harry James-Kitty Kallen immortality "It's Been a Long Long Time." Go back to Blue Eyes's renditions. No, I would not want to say this is better than "Show Boat." But it's still darned good. (Of the newly-renovated album it goes without saying.) The problem is, it could be better; and with Ethel Merman eternally ringing in our ears we know how difficult that will ever be. But we can always...have a dream.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing to Discover.......2006-02-01

Of course I have always known of Ethel Merman and the general style of her singing, but I had never actually sat and listened closely to her until I bought this CD reissue of Gypsy. What an amazing talent she was. Her voice, though often impersonated for kitsch, was a remarkable instrument--that high belt was always clear, always focused on pitch and rhythmically precise (at least on Gypsy). This is a truly absorbing score to listen to, and the remaster has been done wonderfully well, with great taste and attention to detail.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Ethel.......2005-08-14

1959's "Gypsy" was a landmark musical and arguably Ethel Merman's greatest role as Rose, the "stage mother" driven to make her daughter a star. In addition to Ms. Merman, the production included great performances by Jack Klugman and Sandra Church as Herbie (Rose's suitor) and Louise (aka Gypsy Rose Lee), respectively.

The classic score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim is filled with memorable songs.

Best tracks include:

Some People
Small World
You'll Never Get Away From Me
All I Need Is The Girl
Everything's Coming Up Roses
Together Wherever We Go
Let Me Entertain You
Rose's Turn

Despite losing that seasons Best Musical Tony Award to "The Sound Of Music" & "Fiorello" (a tie), "Gypsy" remains a force on Broadway, revived three times since its original run, with Angela Landsbury, Tyne Daly & Bernadette Peters in the starring role. Each brought a different perspective to Rose, but the character will always belong to Ms. Merman!

A classic!

The title says it all. This is the disco album "the Merm" recorded in 1979, a few years before her death. Rumor has it that Merman couldn't stand the disco craze that was sweeping the nation in the late '70s, recording her vocals before the instrumental tracks were laid down. Masterminded by Peter Matz, who produced, arranged, and conducted the whole thing, Merman's disco album is one of those jaw-dropping, "what were they thinking?" UFOs that periodically land on the pop landscape. Merman (at her most bombastic, vibrato-laden) barrels through eight of her signature tunes. All are taken at breakneck speed, and even dramatic show-stoppers, such as "Everything's Coming Up Roses" (from Gypsy), become dance-floor burners. Whether you find the album simply horrifying or an entrancing testimony to the power of people to lose their heads as they fall prey to a dance fad, this collision between two completely different American musical traditions is nothing short of, ahem, breathtaking. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Let's Call It Unique.......2007-03-03

After listening to The Ethel Merman Disco Album, here's what I think happened: Some crafty record producer slipped acid into Ethel's Cracklin Oat Bran, then whisked her off to the studio to lay down these tracks while she was still tripping. "It's a full house! Everybody's here! Now get out there and give it all ya got, Ethel. It's Showtime!"

I'll rate this album at four stars out of respect for Ethel Merman's talent and for the wackiness of her agreeing to this project in the first place. Her voice is in excellent shape; it just doesn't mix with dubbed-in disco. The sound is formulaic, with drum machines, disembodied backup singers, and all the trappings of the cheesiest of the disco sound. "I Got Rhythm" begins with only piano accompaniment and is lovely, but sure enough, the drum machine kicks in again and we're back on Fellini's dance floor.

Listen for yourself!

1 out of 5 stars It's like "Showgirls" but on vinyl.......2006-05-22

Listen to the music on this thing and you can understand why there was a backlash against disco in the late 1970's. The beats are robotic, indistinguishable, mind-numbingly dull and barely listenable. Plus, for a broadway star to make a disco-dance record is nuts; this woman was totally out of her element. This would be like Zamfir making a techno record. That said, it is God-awfully hilarious in the sheer depth of its badness. To sing with such conviction over such dreck and dreadfully wretched music tracks takes real balls. It's a performance that can only be rivaled by that of the multi-talented Elizabeth Berkley in "Showgirls". In other words, it's so bad that it just sucks you in and won't let you go.

This is the best album I've heard in years!
I am both a showtune and disco lover... and I absolutely loved this album! So do all my friends!! I so highly recommend this album to all music lovers-- and light hearted people who enjoy life!

5 out of 5 stars Horrable And Comical Vocals To A Gr8 Disco Production.......2004-11-24

Basicly i'll say this...this LP is a shame that the great musical production was wasted on a joke none the less. The vocals are hillarious! However, the music in itself if your a fan of true disco music is worth having this for. I dont own this CD but have the vinyl..so havent heard the bonus cut. But, musicly there are signs of Alec R Costandinos, Patick Adams and Vincent Montana. On "Some People" (which is prob the best track on the LP cause theres not many vocals), theres a solid sax solo and production in it that you'd swear was Montana/Salsoul Orchestra stuff..but then the vocals ruin it LOL. But anyhow, the 5 stars is for the musical production and comedy combined in one!

5 out of 5 stars A "Must" for Camp Collectors...And a Real Crowd Pleaser.......2004-11-10

I've owned the vinyl for years, and it never ceases to make an impression on visitors, who can scarcely believe such a thing existed. Although it is one of those late-era disco pieces that sounds forumulaic and the programmed beat canned, it IS indeed listenable because of the strength of the underlying broadway classics (by Irving Berlin, others) and the novelty of Merman's unmistakable voice & delivery. Be popular! Everyone wants to hear it, often more than once! I keep mine in a glass case alongside my Michael Jackson -brand soda can, bigfoot tracks, Sea Monkeys other cultural curiousities, until it's time to "boogie."

5 out of 5 stars God wholesome American.......2006-09-01

Our family is not hardcore into vocal or Broadway artists, but after seeing Ethel Mermam (EM) on an old Muppets episode really sparked our interest. So we purchased this collection as a starting point, and we are glad we did. My two year old daughter loves this collection and will not listen to anything else for about two months now. The version of "I Got Rhythm" is well worth the price of addmission. Buy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Legendary Ethel Merman.......2005-09-26

On 13 October 1930 a former stenographer walked onto the stage, sang "I Got Rythm," and in the process held a single note for an incredible thirty-two bars. Her personality was larger than life; her voice was powerful enough to blow open a barn door at sixty paces; and in the era before sound systems you could hear every single word in the balcony back row. A star was born, and her name was Ethel Merman. She would hold Broadway in thrall for two decades.

In those two decades Merman would appear in a host of celebrated musicals, a handful of films, and introduce more great standards than you can count. There is no way a "best of" compilation can do her justice--but THE ETHEL MERMAN COLLECTION comes as close as any single disk collection can. Most of the great ones are here, along with several of her lesser-known but no less greatly performed titles.

Many of the songs are obvious. It would be impossible to have an Ethel Merman collection without including "You're the Top," "I Get A Kick Out of You," "Doin' What Comes Naturally," "Hostess With the Mostes" and "Everything's Coming Up Roses"--to name but a few, all of them great standards of the Broadway stage and all of them sung to perfection. Fortunately, the collection also includes a few you may not have previously encountered, such as "Eadie Was A Lady," "Make It Another Old Fashioned, Please," and two brassy duets with Ray Bolger, "Dearie" and "If I Knew You Were Coming I'd've Bake A Cake." But whether the song is a roundhouse punch or a simple throw away, Merman never gave less than one hundred percent--and she's very much there in every single note.

A few of the songs here could stand a remaster, and I was unhappy with the version of "There's No Business Like Show Business" that is offered here. But short of a box set or a wholesale purchase of all the available Broadway soundtracks, this is probably as good as it gets--and when you're talking about the legendary Ethel Merman, that is very, very good indeed.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Ethel Merman CD.......2004-11-26

If there is one Ethel Merman CD you want to have I can't imagine you finding a better one. This has to be the ultimate. The songs you identify with Ethel Merman will be found here. The CD may appear to have a high price tag, but it is worth every penny. If you enjoy her voice she is the one you want to have sing these timeless songs. You will not be going out on a limb in buying this, nor will you be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Queen of Broadway shows why.......2003-04-13

Ethel possessed an extremely powerful voice, well suited to up-tempo songs for which she is best remembered, yet also capable of singing tender ballads.

Ethel introduced many songs to the public that have since become standards, including the song that became her trademark - There's no business like show business. Among the other standards on this collection are I got rhythm, Life is just a bowl of cherries, I get a kick out of you, Its de-lovely, Doing what comes naturally, I got the sun in the morning and Anything you can do.

I particularly like If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake, a song I hadn't heard before I bought this collection. Eileen Barton topped the American chart in 1950, while Ethel's duet with Ray Bolger (the version here) peaked at a more modest 15.

This is a fine collection of Ethel's music, but my guess is that some of you may find this powerful soprano voice just too shrill. Ethel has the kind of voice you love or hate. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Recording By a Great Star!.......2000-08-17

It's true, this IS a great CD and the best collection of Merman's songs I've seen. The 21 songs cover most of her career and contain virtually all of HER songs from "I Got Rhythm" to "Everything's Coming Up Roses." This CD proves, if it needed proving, that Merman had IT! I's great to hear the songs in essentially chronological order. My favorite songs are the relative unknowns: "Make It Another Old Fashioned Please" and the very witty "I've Still Got My Health." Just as Judy Garland was the queen of the Hollywood musical, Merman was the queen of Broadway. What did they have in common? TALENT!

With all due respect to Bernadette Peters's wonderful, Tony-winning portrayal in the 1999 revival of Annie Get Your Gun, the role of sharpshooting Annie Oakley belongs to Ethel Merman. Her bold, brassy performance of Irving Berlin's best score is legendary, as are the songs themselves, including "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly," "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun," "They Say It's Wonderful," "I Got the Sun in the Morning," "Anything You Can Do," and, of course, the classic industry anthem "There's No Business Like Show Business." This rerelease of the original 1946 cast recording includes four bonus tracks recorded in 1972: the overture, "Colonel Buffalo Bill" and "I'm a Bad, Bad Man" (both removed along with "I'm an Indian Too" for the politically correct 1999 revival), and "An Old-Fashioned Wedding," which was written for the 1966 revival. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous recording.......2006-08-09

Annie Get Your Gun is a wonderful show, but there are two versions. This recording, and the Revival. I STRONGLY recommend this version. There aren't many differences between the two, but this recording has more songs which makes it a completer recording. I also am not a fan of Burnadette Peters`(which plays Annie in the revival) so I find this recording much more pleasing. The show has a nice mix of male and female ballads, and duets. Great recording for new listners and collectors alike. Favorite Songs: "They Say It's Wonderful" and "I'm a Bad, Bad Man"

2 out of 5 stars It's OK for an album of Ethel Merman singing Berlin songs........2005-05-03

This is a fine album if you want to hear Ethel Merman singing Irving Berlin tunes. However, if you want to hear a performance of "Annie Get Your Gun" with some real acting, this isn't it. Ethel Merman's voice MAY be much better but my 17 year old daughter played the part with a lot more feeling in her school play. For instance, "Moonlight Lullaby' HELLO... it's supposed to be a lullaby not an aria. Another example, "Doing What Comes Naturally" is supposed to be when Annie Oakley was an uneducated hillbilly and the accent in this version just isn't there. Some of this may be a proud papa speaking but I just can't buy Ethel Merman as anything other than Ethel Merman.

5 out of 5 stars A charming, bouncy, extravaganza!.......2004-05-08

Wonderful. Simply wonderful. Of course, having never heard any other recordings i cannot be said to be the definitive judge, but i can assure all prospective buyers that I have got a great deal of enjoyment out of this light larking piece, and would certainly reccomend it to any musical fan. In some ways it, like Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate which dates from a similar period, is a breath of fresh air from the soaring romantic musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Dont get me wrong, I adore R+H's work, but the music in many of their most popular shows, (South Pacific comes to mind, as does The King and I) is so powerful and overwhelmingly beautiful, that is is almost a relief to listen to this lighter, less serious piece, which to my mind echos back to an earlier era in Broadway history. The fun, catchy music, combined with the wonderful lyrics, help to make this piece the master piece it really is. Ethel Merman, who, i must admit is not my favorite Broadway performer, is superb; she was born to sing this part. Ray Middleton is slightly dissapointing, but nevertheless good. The overall feeling of the piece is especially well captured in such songs as: "You Can't Get A Man With A Gun", "There's No Business like Show Business", "Moonshine Lullaby", and "I got the Sun In The Morning". The bonus tracks are also delightful- "An Old Fashioned Wedding"is especially good. Overall this fun, sunshiny piece truly deserves all the fame it acquired and is a must for any serious musical fan.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Musicians - Breathtaking !.......2005-10-04

I was so lucky to see this "Ethel.who?..what?...", going to the Joe Jackson & Todd Nudgent concert in Paris in mid June 2005. They started with a Brazilian themed music that was simply amazing. Seriously, it almost brought tears to my eyes because it just made you feel inside "Why did I not become an artist a performer, these people have the courage and drive to fill their dreams with performances like this one". Ethel stole the show. They are up at a level...I see Grammys coming their way. Stunning !!!!!!!!!!!!simply stunning!!!!!! there's still greatness on earth ...

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Unique.......2005-09-25

I recently was introduced to Ethel's music and the Grand Canyon Music Festival (2005) and purchased this CD there. WOW! Their sound is so unique and their energy is high. You have to see them live to really appreciate how wonderful this group is. They're not a stuffy string quartet, but a avant-garde ensemble who push the envelope and blur the lines between classical and contemporary.

After their performance at the festival, my sons and I met the band, including their newest member, Neil, who replaced Todd. I have to say how warm and generous each of these people are which totally complements their on-stage persona and performance. My son, age 14, spoke at length with Mary and Neil and he is now inspired to push his own musical skills to the next level.

Give this CD a try if you're looking for something new and exciting!

5 out of 5 stars A Total Delight.......2005-06-16

I have been listening to "Ethel" all afternoon and am in love with this CD. A recent review I read said that this music was "demanding" for the listener. I am not sure that I would agree. While this music is complex, it is so beautiful that I find it effortless to listen to. This music is playful, energetic and totally engaging; it is clearly a labor of love. One of the downfalls of some other modern music (at least to my ears) is an over intellectualization-sometimes it sounds as though the composer doesn't even know that they have a physical existence. None of that here. While Ethel doesn't ignore the mind, there is also a wonderful visceral quality to it. That quality is clearest on third track "Shuffle;" it would be more aptly named "Swagger." It walks into the room right from the groin! Even the more cerebral "Blue Room" is fully engaged and not just a mental exercise.

This music is one of the nicest surprises I have come across in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Classical musicians transcending genre limitations.......2005-05-21

I also saw this high-powered quartet opening for Joe Jackson & Todd Rundgren. Joe and Todd were brilliant to bring Ethel on their tour. What an astonishing pleasure it must have been for Todd and Joe to hear a few of their songs arranged like that. (The two stars were far from upstaged, in my opinion; performing with Ethel shows their confidence and care for their audience, and the tone was set from the first note for a magically enchanted show.) One of the guys in Ethel described themselves as "classical musicians gone horribly wrong," which may be true enough in a symphony hall, but in a rock concert venue they've gone 360 degrees RIGHT, starting with classical and spiralling through the rock landscape to end at a place that transcends both.

Mary Rowell, the cello player, embodies the Jackie du Pré school of performance (as seen in the movie "Hilary and Jackie"); they all do, actually, with full-body performances that allow them to inject energy and vitality into their fusion-influenced sounds.

They're doing for classical what Gram Parsons did for country music: bringing in a rock-and-roll sensibility that reinvigorates both genres.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2005-05-08

I took my kids to their first concert tonight. I figured Joe Jackson and Todd Rundgren was as good a place as any to start my kids out. Well, quite frankly the star of this show was Ethel! First of all it was JJ and TR solo. Ethel opened the show and I had chills. When the other two came out and played all I could do was wish for more Ethel. So after wading through an hour of greatest hits unplugged, to my astonishment Ethel came back out and played with the to aging stars. This was the shinning moment of the show. The first song they played was George Harrison's "as my guitar gently weeps". Let me tell you if George could of ever played his guitar the way the two vilonists played I might have actually listened to Harrison's music. It was beyond belief. The emotion and vibrance was second to none. I will be rushing to the music store at opening time to buy this CD. I have never had an expirence like this ever. I fear going to another show, because I am afraid I will be let down. Buy everything this quartet puts out...NOW!

4 out of 5 stars Hammond nut.......2007-04-12

Overall a very good CD for passionate old Hammond music lovers. Some songs weren't arranged well, but most were. Her playing is very similar to that of Lenny Dee, but still has a taste of it's own. It's a shame she's no longer with us, I would love to have watched her play--the fingerwork is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A FITTING TRIBUTE TO A REAL LADY.......2007-01-15

This anthology from the Decca vaults shows the many sides of a true Popular organ VIRTUOSO. Her Latin American pieces are well represented as well as Standards, Blues, Hits, Swing and Novelty. Her impeccable technique served her great expressive and even comic skills. I saw her live and she was a ball of fire as these selections show. She was THE FIRST LADY OF THE HAMMOND ORGAN!!! Don't miss this trip down a wonderful Memory Lane!

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for Hammond enthusiasts.......2004-12-23

This collection is a fine example of the very first Hammond Organ recordings, back at the 40'ies or so. The style on many of the tracks is the fundamental melody/chords/pedal, but Ethel also is very good at the latino american tunes, which she performs with excellent skill and feeling. The sound quality is acceptable for these early recordings and better than on the vinyl LP. This double CD is higly recommended for those who want to hear Hammond music from the beginning. Ethel Smith, may You forever stay in our Hammond memories.

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2007-07-05

This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27

The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11

I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11

I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19

Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.

    Certainly worth the money!
