Rutter: Gloria

Editorial Reviews

Born in London in 1945, John Rutter is well known on both sides of the Atlantic for his choral compositions and as founder of the Cambridge Singers. He has regularly conducted at New York's Carnegie Hall; his "Magnificat" was written for performance there, while his "Gloria" was commissioned by a conductor in the Midwest. Tonal, accessible, and beautiful, Rutter's works have a distinctly personal style. Their somewhat archaic flavor is due, in part, to his frequently using fourths as building blocks and having the voices move in thirds (male and female alternating and ultimately converging), and also to his persistent displacement of prosodic accents away from the strong beats. The music literally speaks with the tongues of men and angels, and this seems entirely fitting: it radiates faith, hope, and a spontaneous love for the underlying words. The celestial voices are especially effective in Psalm 150, composed for the Queen's Golden Jubilee at St Paul's Cathedral. Set in English, it interpolates a few Latin lines between the verses, sung by three boy trebles stationed in the dome of King's College Chapel, where the recordings were made. (The Magnificat reverses the procedure, inserting a lovely English poem into the Latin text.) The performances are first-rate. There are many angelic harp solos; the woodwinds and brasses, especially the trumpets, are wonderful and make the "Gloria" truly glorious. The prominent solos for boy sopranos are impeccably in tune, but, except in the Psalm, sound a bit shrill and tight. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19

This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.

4 out of 5 stars Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20

I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-03

I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30

I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2005-04-29

The John Rutter Collection in my opinion is one of the finest and most perfect works I've ever heard. The Cambridge Singers demonstrates the best vocal discipline and style of any vocal group in the world.

A very good choir and excellent arrangements of interesting Christmas music. I am a big fan of Robert Shaw; this isn't a Robert Shaw concert but in some ways it is even better. The precision of the choir, plus the excitement they bring to their performance, makes this a favorite at our house. The CD has a clear, balanced sound. Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Glorious!.......2006-01-18

This recording of the Cambridge Singers has them recording pieces composed by their own director, John Rutter. The Gloria is Rutter's version of a standard piece of liturgical music, representing influences ancient and modern. This was recorded at in 1984, with the City of London Sinfonia and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble collaborating.

    --Music--
The Gloria is a piece in three movements. The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble performs with the Cambridge Singers and soloists Mary Seers, Mary Hitch, and Caroline Ashton. This includes organ music and timpani/percussion. The Gloria is one of Rutter's earliest works, written as a commissioned piece for an American group (Voices of Mel Olson, Omaha, Nebraska). The three movements are reminiscent of standard symphonic structure. The outer movements are more boisterous ('make a joyful noise unto the Lord'), whereas the middle movement is more introspective and subdued.

The other pieces included here are anthems, bright and cheery, fully orchestrated and performed with spirit. There are three pieces that are a capella, reflecting Rutter's and the Cambridge Singers' passion for this medium.

    --Liner Notes--
The notes include an introduction to the CD by Rutter describing some of the influences and expressions in his composition. Lyrics are included, and where the original is in Latin, an English translation is provided. There is no listing of the performers of the Cambridge Singers, no description of the group, nor biographical information about John Rutter.

    --John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

    --The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

    This is a glorious recording!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2004-11-08

This is a fabulous rendition of Rutter's music. The 23rd Psalm and the closing blessing are just outstanding.

This is a good interpretation of Poulenc's Gloria but by no means it beats Hickox's recorded version of this famous work:the "andamento"!...

5 out of 5 stars Clearly performed, good music........2000-06-21

Anyone want to get aquainted with Poulenc's choral music should buy this CD. You will find some unexpectedly neat, good music in it. Here they are performed in a quite clear, correct atmosphere and interpretation. Rutter and Cambridge singers handle these good music very well. The record gets a bit over-echoed, but it is still ok.

      5 out of 5 stars Glorious!.......1999-12-21

The Poulance Gloria is world class music at its best and the Rutter recording is the best rendition I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-06-08

This is truly an excellent compilation of outstanding works from King' College Choir. It involves three different eras: Sir David Willcocks dlrects 10 numbers dating from 1970-1977; Sir Philip Ledger directs 4 numbers dating from 1975-1982 and Stephan Cleobury directs 5 numbers dating from 1984-2002.
Familiar works are set alongside neglected choral treasures, the collection ranging from Allegri and Tallis to Tavener and Rutter; from John Dyke's stirring hymn 'Holy, holy, holy' to Britten's colorful description of the birth of St. Nicholas and his serene setting of the medieval carol 'There is no Rose'.
The recording is directly from the King's College which is known for its excellent acoustics among other things; that being the perfectly wonderful King's College Choir. This choir has become famous throughout the world and as you will hear on this disc, it doesn't matter what year or what conductor, it is always perfection, in tone quality, balance, emotional investment, diction and anything else one expects from a good singing group!!! I totally enjoyed every listening moment!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The story behind the recording.......2004-12-15

I must admit that I was a member of S.F. Choral Artsists and sang on this recording, which was made in 1985, I believe. It's become a favorite of many friends who enjoy a capella choral singing. We recorded it in the lovely St. Ignatius Church on the campus of University of San Francisco, which happens to be on a very busy bus line. We could not record until after midnight because the sounds of the bus could be heard inside the wonderful cathedral with its incredible reverberation. The Reference Recordings folks were using the high-tech digital mastering technology and planned to issue the recording on something new called a CD, an original one of which I have, as well as the traditional LP which was the original big seller. So, after work each day we'd get together to have dinner and practice in the early evening, and then about midnight begin recording until 5am, for several nights straight. One of my fondest memories is recording the gorgeous Wilcox arrangement of "What Child Is This?" about 4am. The sense of the still of the night sounds still comes through on the recording, as does the somehwat ghostly "Happy New Year" at the end of the "Deck the Hall." It's nice to see that is is still available, and I hope folks enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Star of Wonder-Music for the Seasons.......2000-12-13

"Star of Wonder" is a lovely CD of Christmas-themed music, some familiar and some new. If you enjoy beautiful a cappella singing and love Christmas music, you will want to own this CD. The ensemble is superb, and the soprano sound has a pure, chrystalline, single-voice quality that is quite unique. While most of the singing is unaccompanied, some pieces are enhanced by the evocative quality of a flute, handbells or harp. This CD is a joyful discovery.
