To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood

Album Description

There's a smart balance of traditional Hawaiiana and contemporary tunes on this CD. There's heart-tugging warmth along with unexpected chuckles. The end result is a candid, honest reinforcement of his vocal breadth.

5 out of 5 stars You need this classic for your Hawaiian music collection.......2007-07-21

This guy has an amazing voice and this album shows it off very well. Contains the "Over the Rainbow" version seen on TV and many other songs. It is also a "political" statement in music. Iz was anti-US and favored Hawaiian independence. But, still an amazing album and music.

5 out of 5 stars I love this cd!.......2007-07-20

Never one to care much about Hawaaian music, these songs by IZ blew me away.I first heard his singing of Somewhere over the rainbow on a tv commercial. Had to buy the cd and I wasn't disappointed. His voice is soothing and sad and mellow. My favorite is Over the rainbow.

I know that is where IZ is now in the land of lemon drops and bluebirds. He is happy and singing his songs to the angels. Buy this cd and you will be very glad you did!

Elliott Yamin's debut is so agreeable and well-executed it may well convert hardened R&B experts--the kind who'd normally distance themselves from a disc with a TV pedigree. With sincerity and a voice that vaults itself to places no talent-show contestant should be able to go, Yamin bares his soul here in a way that would do his hero, Donny Hathaway, proud. Tracks like "Take My Breath Away" and "You Are the One" find him twisting a wrench around love-stained lyrics; "I'm the Man" and "Find A Way" flow with hat-in-hand grace (and, in the case of the latter, a scat worthy of a vintage jazz stage); and opener "Movin' On" immortalizes the season five judges'-table words of Paula Abdul: Ellliott Yamin is "one funky white boy." As he proves with this five-star album, he is also among the most gifted artists ever to a turn a stint on the show into a recording career. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Lovely lovely lovely.......2007-07-21

After I saw him in American Idol, I have been waiting for his CD, and now that it's here, I can't stop listening to it. His voice is very nice and he CAN sing. A good choice if you want nice music.

4 out of 5 stars An exceptional debut that grows on you.......2007-07-20

Elliott Yamin in my opinion probably has the best voice of any of the contestants from AI season 5, even though I liked Chris Daughtry a little better overall, I was pulling big time for them both to be in the finale. Alas neither of them made it, so I was excited to know that Elliott had gotten a record deal, because I was fearful he might not get one since he's not as commercially friendly as some of that season's alums, and it would have been a shame to let his amazing voice go unsigned. All that said however, if I would have reviewed this album three months ago when I first listened to it, I definitely wouldn't have given it a 4/5 stars, it probably would have been more around a 2 to 2.5.

Indeed when I first bought the album and upon the initial listens, I couldn't help but be disappointed that such a great talent had put out a CD that in my opinion was very forgettable, granted I did like a few songs at first, such as the first single "Wait For You" and "Movin On". Thankfully I refused to give up on the album, and after making myself listen to the tracks multiple times I soon realized my initial impressions of the album were pretty off. No this is not a 5 star album or a classic in my opinion (but then again how many debut albums are?), but I now regard it as a very solid r&b/pop album. The tracks on this album really do grow on you, so I just want to stress to fans of Yamin that if they're not crazy about the album at first give it a chance before making your final judgments.

The album is definitely very R&Bish / soulful (who says white men can't have soul right?), but there are also pop influences present on the album. Almost every song is well written, especially such ones as "Find a Way", a modern R&B track about the unfairness of the world, and how love has to find a way in order to cope with it all. "Free" is another lyrical highlight about how we have the freedom to be able to make our dreams realities if we put our mind to it, although it's not one of my favorite songs melody-wise.

Some of my favorite melodies on the album are the mid tempo first single "Wait For You" which mixes R&B and pop, and the soft and soothing "You Are The One", a straight up love ballad. "Train Wreck" is a pure R&B song, and a favorite of mine, where Yamin's voice is in top form as he sings about a relationship thats heading for a "train wreck", and I love the hook of the song. On the other end, I love the upbeat rhythms of "Movin On", which boasts a hand clapping beat that accompanies lyrics about getting tired of waiting for his significant other to decide what she wants, and "movin on" with his life. "Alright" is another upbeat track, that wouldn't feel out of place in a club, the song definitely has a hip/hop vibe to it and to me sounds similar to something Usher would record. It's a great change of pace and another favorite of mine.

Thats another good thing about the album, there really is a variety of appeal on here, "Wait For You" and "You Are the One" for example would be perfect for ac radio or even pop, whereas I could see songs like "Movin On" and "Alright" fitting in on current R&B/Hip Hop stations, the album really has a range of appeal from old to young, Adult Contemporary to R&B. Even commercially the album has potential, "Wait For You" has so far become a top 20 hit on the Billbaord Hot 100, and I don't think its the only song on here capable of making it into that tier of the charts.

But perhaps the best thing about this album, is Yamin's voice itself. Even when I wasn't too into the songs yet, I still loved listening to Yamin's strong soulful voice, which shines on pretty much every track here, and fans of Yamin should enjoy the "A Song For You" cover, which is definitely a showcase for Yamins vocals. Even the tracks I don't really care for such as "I'm the Man" and "Take My Breath Away" are made much better by the voice thats singing them.

So overall I'm pleased with Elliott's debut, it took some time, but the album is one that I'll be listening to for awhile. If Yamin can improve upon his debut and grow more as an artist, he should have a long, bright career ahead. 4/5 stars

My Top 5:
1. Wait For You
2. Alright
3. Train Wreck
4. Find A Way
5. Movin On

4 out of 5 stars Elliott Yamin does not need synthesizer.......2007-07-16

I love Elliott Yamin and was pleased with this first cd but he does not need all of the electronic synthesizer effects on some of the cuts. I saw him in person singing these same songs and they were so much better with just a band behind him. I hope his next cd will be done more simply. Elliott is amazing and he should be appreciated in his pure form.

This CD contains a smattering of all the traditional pieces you would expect to be played during a wedding ceremony which is why I purchased it. I do like it and it will be used at my ceremony. I prefer a little more big orchestral sound but this will do nicely.

I bought this CD for my ballet classes and am really happy with it. It has all of the classics, and each is very true to it's original composition. There are a lot of horns, which are not my favorite, but the strings make it worth every penny!

The tape consists of 25 traditional wedding songs played by big orchestras; the music was beautiful and made a small ceremony into a special, unforgettable ceremony.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for wedding planners.......2007-04-05

I work regularly with people planning church weddings who want the service to be dignified, traditional and formal. Often they have "ear memory" of music they've heard in other weddings, but no idea about its composer or title. This CD is the best compilation I've found of music that fits those requirements. Selections include great music and performances make it easy to imagine how they would sound in a particular church or other setting. Includes works by Protestant, Catholic and secular composers.

Sounding like a flashback of the first few years of MTV, the soundtrack of The Wedding Singer starts as an intended goof and ends up quite listenable, thanks. While a couple of these songs (Musical Youth's "Pass the Dutchie" in particular) had already fallen off the cultural radar by 1985, when the movie's action takes place, what's most impressive is the staying power most of them hold. If anything, the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" sounds even better than it did then, and of course "How Soon Is Now," and "Blue Monday" are classics that have transcended their era: Just ask Matt Pinfield. Or Adam Sandler. Or Steven Morrissey. --Rickey Wright

I don't often buy sound tracks but this movie is fun and I like the songs but not enough to buy the CD's of the artists envolved here.

5 out of 5 stars If you are a fan of the film or anything 80s...buy this CD!.......2007-04-20

The soundtrack to the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore 80s retro romantic comedy "The Wedding Singer," proved to be a surprise smash hit when it was released in early 1998. So popular was the soundtrack, in fact, a second volume was released later that year.

Set in 1985, anyone vaguely familiar with 80s pop-culture knows that the film is at times off by a couple of years when it goofs on 80s styles, music and fashion. Some of the targets that were featured in this film, (i.e., Flock of Seagulls hair-style, Boy George, etc) were yesterday's news by 1985. That really doesn't matter though, as "The Wedding Singer" is still an awesome movie that's hysterical and a lot of fun.

Like the film, the soundtrack is off by a couple of years as well. Most of the hits on this CD were popular in the early 80s, a few years before the "The Wedding Singer" is set. But that doesn't really matter either, as "The Wedding Singer" soundtracks are two of the best 80s compilations ever assembled.

Focusing mostly on new wave and pop standards, "The Wedding Singer" soundtracks offer a grab-bag of hits, from the decade's most essential artists, one-hit-wonders, and the novelty acts in between.

Volume one starts out with a cover of the Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star" performed by the 90s alt-pop band The Presidents of the United States of America. While it may seem odd to start off an 80s soundtrack with a 90s artist, covering a song from the 70s, it actually works just fine. It makes the soundtrack appear fresh and spices up the album a little, setting "The Wedding Singer" soundtrack apart from a million other 80s comps. The Culture Club's reggae flavored "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" is one of those songs that I'm embarrassed to admit I like...but I do. Another reggae flavored smash, the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic," is magic. The Smith's "How Soon is Now?" and the Psychedelic Furs "Love My Way" offer two off-beat, alternative classics. If I was a little embarrassed to admit I liked "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," I'm a lot more embarrassed to admit that I like the Thomson Twins "Hold Me Now," but I just can't help myself. Elvis Costello's enchanting "Everyday I Write the Book" follows nicely. One artist that managed to blend metal and new wave brilliantly was Billy Idol, and his classic "White Wedding" gives the soundtrack a little shot of adrenalin. David Bowie's "China Girl" is rather dark, yet danceable, and totally irresistible. New Order's club staple "Blue Monday" never gets old, no matter how many times I hear it. "Pass the Dutchie" by Musical Youth has never really done anything for me. I find it to be just flat out annoying. That said, I usually don't skip over it either, as it has some kind of alluring quality. Adam Sandler's original composition "Somebody Kill Me" is a lot of fun and is definitely something someone can relate to if they're broken hearted. "Rapper's Delight," featuring a bizarre intro rap by the elderly Ellen Dow (as seen in the film) is hilarious and never gets old. The actual song, performed by Sugerhill Gang is great, and is a perfect closer to the soundtrack.

I own a bunch of 80s compilation albums and the "Wedding Singer" soundtracks, volumes one and two, I rank as the very best. First, the flow of the albums are great, as all the songs just sort of fit together perfectly. Second, there isn't a bad song among the bunch. Even the "bad" songs, like the Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now," on this volume, are good. Some of these 80s comps you see are filled with top 40 standards that are just bad, as in, like...bad. Third, the inclusion of some novelties--a song by The Presidents of the United States, a Sandler original, dialogue from the film, ("Have you Written Anything Lately") and the Ellen Dow track, make this compilation unique and not just another soundtrack or another 80s hits compilation.

If you are a fan of the movie "The Wedding Singer" or anything 80s, both this soundtrack and the second volume are highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars THE WEDDING SINGER ROCKS!!!.......2006-08-18

I love The Wedding Singer! It is my favorite movie ever!!! I can watch it over and over again and not get tired of it. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore rock! Plus, not only is the movie awesome, but the soundtrack is awesome too! You can never get enough of The Wedding Singer! brie in washington (and to make the point straight, I AM almost 14, so haha to being a kid, even if this last statement was immature.)

4 out of 5 stars One of the songs I'm looking for ..........2006-06-15

... isn't on this collection. OR 'Vol. 2' of this soundtrack series. If only The Cure's "Boy's Don't Cry" (in the film, it is playing in the background during the scene when Robby's best friend, Sammy, is visiting him in his basement apartment) was on either the first or second soundtrack disc of this film, there wouldn't be hesitancy to purchase (nor would there be this review, so there's the upside!). Seriously, I'm still gonna get both these discs. However, the only reason I can figure that The Cure is not on these is licensing issues.

5 out of 5 stars A very good purchase.......2006-03-10

I'm very happy with the purchase. The product was delivered very fast, within the time scheduled.

Amazon.com

Is it forgivable that the second volume of songs from Adam Sandler's mid-'80s-revival comedy begins with Kajagoogoo's famously limp "Too Shy"? Not really, but the rest of the disc does a good job of recapitulating worthy memories from the era of torn-sweatshirt necks and mulletheads--not just with new-wave novelties but with Madonna and Hall & Oates staples ("Holiday" and "You Make My Dreams," respectively) as bouncy and glossy as anything the also-present Depeche Mode ("Just Can't Get Enough") and Dead or Alive ("You Spin Me Round [Like a Record]") ever put on the radio or MTV. The Cars' "It's All I Can Do" and the J. Geils Band's "Love Stinks" encapsulate the Sandler character's romantic frustrations, while the star's own "Grow Old with Me" actually points toward a serious career as a singer/songwriter for our boy. 5 out of 5 stars Tunes from the 80s.......2007-01-26

Loved the movie love the tunes. "Grow Old With You," especially tugs at your heart strings.

4 out of 5 stars Solid sountrack if you liked the movie.......2007-01-15

This movie was a favorite in our household and my daughters always enjoyed the karaoke a the end of the DVD, so we searched for the soundtrack. I actually chose this volume over volume 1 for two reasons...it contains the favorite from the movie, "I want to grow old with you" actually sung by Adam Sandler and secondly, because Volume 1 contains the song that Adam Sandler sings about his ex-girlfriend, which contains quite a bit of profanity, so I didn't want to get it for my kids. I would have given it five stars, but we find the introduction by Billy Idol at the start of the last track, "I want to grow old with you," which is dialog from the movie, to be distracting and it gets tiring to have to listen to over and over when you just want to hear the song, which I mentioned was the absolute favorite.

5 out of 5 stars As good as volume 1.......2007-01-11

This album took me back to "the good old Days". If you love 80's music this is a must have! The first volume was great but I was left wondering, "what happened to the rest of the music from the movie?" Volume 2 answered that question. You won't be sorry if you get this CD. Maybe it too will take you back to "the good old days".

5 out of 5 stars Finally found it!.......2006-02-25

Aahh...the uniqueness of 80s music. Been looking for the Flying Lizards "Money" song since then. It's been on several movie sound tracks however it never made it on the 'sound track CD' until now. "Leisure Rules"

5 out of 5 stars if you like the 80's.......2006-02-21

you will love this album. Truth be told I liked this one more than the first cd. The recordings are excellent.

Ani DiFranco steals the show with her ace rendition of Dusty Springfield's "Wishin' and Hopin'." But DiFranco was playing the lyrics for smirks, which made it hard to wrap yourself up in the performance. Elsewhere, you get Mary-Chapin Carpenter covering "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," a version of "What the World Needs Now Is Love" by Jackie DeShannon; Diana King (of "Stir It Up" fame) doing a lite-reggae version of "I Say a Little Prayer," and a Tony Bennett moment. Burt Bacharach's songs are all over this CD, which is good. But aside from DiFranco and Bennett, many of the artists turned loose to sing them could've been better deployed. Overall, rather slight. --Gavin McNett

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars My Best Friend's Wedding CD.......2007-06-27

To be honest I only bought the CD for one song. If you wanna be happy is the name of the song. I am pretty satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Old Friends, Good Times.......2007-06-14

I bought this CD strictly for the song "If You Wanna Be Happy". You know, the song that cautions about making a pretty woman your wife. I needed the song for a PowerPoint presentation/gameshow I was doing in honor of my husband's 50th birthday/LIRR retirement party. (Yes, he did make the mistake, early in our marriage, of casually agreeing with the advice in the song! He has since learned not to voice those opinions.)
I found myself pleasantly surprised by the eclectic selection of songs and have downloaded it to my Zume. It is nice to hear some of the oldies again and remember what you were doing when they were first popular. It makes for a nice nostalgia trip. Poor yourself a glass of wine, kick back and reminisce.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-12-03

This is one of my favorite movies... and so I had to own the soundtrack.
This was such a wonderful buy I just couldn't pass it up! :)

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite Like The Music In The Movie.......2006-07-19

I love watching movies and then purchasing the soundtracks shortly after I can't stop singing the music on the movie. I purchased this soundtrack recently and let me tell you that it is good but I was somewhat disappointed. I think that the songs are very soothing and nice, but not quite what was in the movie. I guess what I was looking for was a lot of what I heard during the movie, the cast singing and things like that. Some good advice before buying, keep in mind that if you are looking for something closer to what is heard on the movie, this is not exactly it. If you like the music in the movie in general and do not care about how it is played as long as you get the same words, then you should buy the soundtrack.

In general I was very disappointed that it was not closer to what is featured in the movie, but it has several classics in there for those of you who are looking for that sort of stuff. Good luck on your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack as fun as the movie!!!.......2006-01-29

Such great music!! Nice that it includes some of the songs by the actors, many soundtracks miss those. Notably missing, however, is my personal favorite -- Dermot Mulroney singing The Way You Look Tonight. Now that would make it complete!!

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

5 out of 5 stars One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

5 out of 5 stars wedding.......2007-06-08

Very good music to play before a wedding and some for flower girls. We used Beauty & the Beast for Flower girls and Ice Castles for seating the Mothers. Great!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-12

I bought this CD because I am getting married in April and I love anything Disney. It's wonderful. All the songs are very soft and perfect to have as much playing while your guests are arriving... at least that's what I'm going to use it for. I'm sure I'll listen to it even after the wedding. It's very relaxing but fun too because it's all Disney songs!

5 out of 5 stars Simply romantic and beautiful..........2007-01-09

5 stars for this wonderful collection of orchestrated Disney love songs! I am planning on having a fairy-tale themed wedding. My fiance didn't want me to play songs directly from Disney movies; we both agreed that they were too "kiddy" for a wedding. This CD is exactly what I was looking for. It contains nostalgic, mature (and purely instrumental) renditions of beloved Disney love songs. Very romantic -- couldn't be more perfect for a wedding!

And if you're not looking for wedding music, this CD is perfect for relaxation. My personal favorites are the renditions of "Beauty and the Beast," "Bella Notte," and "Something There." The only downside of this CD is that I wish they included more songs! (i.e. "Once Upon a Dream," "Kiss the Girl," etc.)

Otherwise, well worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Wedding Bliss.......2006-11-07

As a wedding coordinator you do what you can to please the bride your working with. My bride wanted a princess theme for her wedding. This CD fit perfectly for what she wanted. The instrumental Disney songs set a great mood for her entrance.

5 out of 5 stars Very romantic atmosphere this album brings!.......2006-06-20

This is really a romantic music collection. Almost all the most romantic songs of Disney were in this album, though there were no lyrics to sing, but it's still so romantic, or even more romantic than the vocal versions! Where I first heard this album was a restaurant, this album made the atmosphere so romantic and magical. Then I have decided to buy this album.
I think "Beauty and the Beast" is the best track in this album, I love the sound of piano. "Something There" was my favorite song in the movie, and this instrumental version is so beautiful too! At the first few seconds of the track "Love Is A Song", I could hardly recognize this, it was a little different from the original in the movie. But it's beautiful indeed! "Part of Your World" is one of my favorite Disney songs, and its instrumental version hasn't maken me disappointed, it made me feel very dreamy. I didn't like the song "Someday My Prince Will Come" so much before, but its instrumental version made me love it. However, the CD I bought from the music shop was not so good, I couldn't listen to the track "When You Wish Upon a Star" which I loved very much.
My father love light music very much, and I want to introduce this album to him in summer holiday, I'm sure he'll love this very much.
