Brahms: Violin Concerto; Mozart: Sinfonia
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
David Oistrakh recorded the Brahms several times. This one is a great performance in 1960 sound that holds up well. The combination of a crack French orchestra, a German conductor known for granitelike solidity, and the intense Russian violinist strikes sparks. Oistrakh plays with fire dampened by a big tone that moves easily between ineffable sweetness and molten heat. Klemperer and the orchestra match him throughout, and the Adagio is especially striking in its emotional depth. In the Mozart, from 1972, the violinist switches to the viola and directs the Berlin Philharmonic, while son Igor takes the violin part. The result is one of the best recordings of this masterpiece. The two play with spirit, breathing and phrasing as one, while David's big viola sound and expert playing indicate he's as much at home on that instrument as on the fiddle. The orchestral part is a huge plus here; the BPO's warm sound and detailed playing are outstanding. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Customer Reviews:
If you're really in a hurry to get over Pachelbel's Canon.......2006-05-01
Karajan was an amazing conductor. Precise, demanding, exacting, but also emotional and deeply sensible to nuances and subtleties of the various works and comosers he conducted. He's amazing with Beethoven and Wagner, for instance.
With Pachelbel, however, something didn't click. I have at least three Karajan recordings of the Canon in D -as well as over 50 other versions- and none are as brief, "martial", cut-and-dry, hurry-up-and-leave like Karajan's. Don't ask me why, but it would seem that conducting Pachelbel was something he didn't enjoy.
The rest of the album, however, is very enjoyable, smooth, melodious, and thoroughly enjoyable and commendable.
So, in a nutshell: if you've had it with Pachelbel's Canon in D, this is a great recording for you. If, on the other hand, you really love the Canon, skip it while playing this album or, for that matter, any of Karajan's recordings of it, where you'll also find this report, as I have collected them all: my acoustical masochism knows no boundaries.
I hope this helps you in your selection. Enjoy!
A beautiful way to spend some time.......2005-09-05
Unlike some recordings of works that demand your attention, as one reviewer pointed out this can be the backdrop for romance, (dare I say) easy listening, or playing with the kids or grandkids. It is a wonderful canvas upon which to paint your day.
von Karajan and the Berliner Philharminiker are probably the only remnants of a time that shook the world, both before, during and after. They and their progeny stayed the course. The DG recording is wonderful, kind of a collection of other tracks on other recordings.
von Karajan has always worked towards the prize of achieving the most perfect musical sound. He does not fall short here. 5 Stars. Wonderful music. Larry Scantlebury
Gentle, Slow, Reflective...and Wonderful.......2003-09-04
Karajian's Adagio is, as the title of this 1994 album culled from previous recordings of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a CD devoted to the "adagio," a slow, gentle tempo that first became widely used in the Baroque period of music. An adagio can be either part of a greater whole (the Allegretto or 2nd Movement from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony in A major) or a complete self-contained composition (the "Valse Triste/Sad Waltz by Sibelius).
The best known pieces in this collection from Deustsche Gramophon are perhaps Pachelbel's Canon in D, which features a gentle melody that is played first by one section of the orchestra, then repeated and taken up by other sections, becoming more intricate as the piece ascends to a shimmering conclusion. The other widely known composition, Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G minor, sounds as if it was a Baroque piece from the late 17th Century, but it was neither composed by Albinoni nor is it a Baroque-period work. It's actually a 20th Century forgery executed by Albinoni's biographer Remo Giazotto. Nevertheless, it's a powerful and deeply moving piece, marked by the somber interplay of organ and strings. (This piece was used, with great effect, in the latter section of Australian director Peter Weir's 1980 film Gallipoli.)
Karajan's Adagio spans several centuries and musical eras, from the aforementioned Baroque to the post-Romantic 20th Century. In addition to Albinoni/Giazotto, Pachelbel, Sibelius, and Beethoven, listeners will find compositions by Mozart, Massenet, Vivaldi. Brahms, Grieg, Mahler, and J.S. Bach. With such a diverse group of composers, even though the pieces are leisurely and gentle, they also express a wide range of musical moods, ranging from the pathos of Grieg's Anse's Death to the pastoral tranquility of Mozart's 4th Movement from his Divertimento in B-flat major.
If you wish the moderate baroque music,.......2002-07-23
Disappointed is the Canon of Pachelbel. The score is partly omitted and the temp is too rhythmical like a march. On the other hand the Adagio of Albinoni is orchestrated beautifully except the pipe organ which sounds after-recording. The Air is normal.
If you wish the baroque music above, compare others.
* * * * *.......2001-09-23
This CD is a wonderful compilation of amazing and beautiful pieces and movements. The Massenet is gorgeous, Grieg is breathtaking, and Mahler... well all I can say is WOW ::sigh:: The Beethoven was performed a bit fast for my personal tastes but still a beautiful performance. This is definitely a disc no one should be without.

Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06
The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.
As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.
However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.
But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.
My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.
Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

A WORTHY TRIBUTE TO A GREAT ARTIST.......2007-05-07
ISAAC STERN WILL ALWAYS BE UNIQUE AS HE HAD A TONE AND TECHNIQUE WITH THE VIOLIN THAT DEFIES DESCRIPTION. ON THIS RECORDING LISTEN TO THE RONDO FROM BEETHOVEN'S VIOLIN CONCERTO OP 61 - IT IS SIMPLY SPINE TINGLING. ANOTHER EXAMPLE WOULD BE FRITZ KREISLER'S LIEBESLEID HOWEVER TO MY ESTIMATION THE FIRST CD RELEASE OF BEETHOVEN'S VIOLIN SONATA OP 30 NO 2 - 'ALLEGRO CON BRIO' HAS TO BE HEARD BY ANY LOVER OF THE VIOLIN AND IS IN MY OPINION ONE OF THIS GREAT ARTIST'S FINEST RECORDING - BUY THE CD JUST FOR THIS ALONE. EVERYTHING ELSE IS SUPERB SO DON'T HESITATE TO ADD THIS CD IN YOUR COLLECTION.
Good for beginners.......2003-03-01
I am a newbie to classical music. I love this CD. I realize that it doesn't do justice to many works due to the fact that only one track is played from each work, but to people like me, this is a good starting point. From here, I now know of areas of Isaac Stern's body of work that I want to delve into. I also have a better idea of which composers I want to take a closer look at. In my opinion, for a person just starting out in classical music, this is a good "sampler" of classical violin music. It's probably not something for a serious collector due to the fact that it is a collection of previously released works. I would consider it in league with a "greatest hits" album from a rock band. It's not for serious listeners, but it's a good starting point for beginners. This is a good starting point.
A tribute to the artist.......1999-10-20
Of course the playing is magnificent, absolute magic. But does this CD serve any purpose? Very few serious collections are without some Stern offerings in which he plays the COMPLETE WORK. I emphasize those words to get to a complaint I always have with programs that consist of parts of longer works that make little musical sense detached from the context for which they were intended.
The Dvorak "Humoresque," for example, stands up very nicely as a single work; while the first movement of the Beethoven Piano Trio Op. 70 makes you anticipate the wonderful second movement which never comes. And so on and so on. So one will not purchase this for the music but for the artist.
No, I do not know how to fit on one CD a truly fitting tribute to a master musician, except by including only independent short pieces. Unhappily most artists are at their best in longer ones...and there we are again. Yes, all Stern lovers should have this as a momento; others not familiar with his artistry will find this CD a good introduction. The rest of us can seek out the complete recordings.

Heifetz sharing the limelight.......2005-07-19
This must be, quite frankly, the best Bach Double Concerto ever put on disc. Sir Malcolm Sargent - largely forgotten these days, one fears - directs a trenchant performance that storms into one's consciousness from the very opening bar. The result (when added to the delightful give-and-take which Heifetz and his former pupil Erick Friedman exhibit) is that even those weary unto death of so hackneyed a work will find themselves falling in love with it afresh.
If the Bach performance is great, the Mozart is perhaps still greater, displaying a depth all too rare in more conventional interpretations. The central slow movement reveals elegiac passion - Heifetz sharing the limelight with the less flamboyant Primrose - which is more readily associated with Mozart's very last pieces. Those of us who for years had reconciled ourselves to considering the SINFONIA CONCERTANTE rather dull can now, thanks to Heifetz and Primrose, appreciate the composition's true excellence.
Only the Brahms disappoints: captured in sound as remorselessly dry as anything which RCA ever inflicted on Toscanini, and with conducting (by Alfred Wallenstein) that skates over Brahms's surface rather than digging in to his substance. The sonic dryness must have been a deliberate engineering decision, since no trace of it mars the Bach (recorded in England), and since even the Mozart (same venue as the Brahms) is easier on the ears. A mostly treasurable collection, even so; its attractiveness is increased by RCA's decision to reprint the original LPs' annotations.
Great CD........2002-11-10
With the early music movement well in place, one can appreciate Heifetz' tempi and smoothness of interpretation, which contrasts with the more 'romantic' approaches to Bach and Baroque music in general at the time of this recording. With most Bach double violin recordings, I am often tempted to hit the track button and move on. With this recording, I feel guilty if I don't listen to the whole movement. I was impressed at the way the violins are well balanced on this re-issue. Usually, Heifetz gets the microphone!
As for the Mozart, Primrose shows great athletic prowess on the viola, and at times gives a more convincing rendition of some of the passage work of the Sinfonia. However, one is always charmed with the sweeping phrases of Heifetz. The style of play between the two is not entirely opposed, but it is noticeable, and can be very educational to listen carefully to the different ways they execute. Primrose always thought that Heifetz could have been even better had he played with a lower bow arm!
Finally, this Brahms is one of the classic renditions, although I think Feuermann was a better match for Heifetz. Nevertheless, Piatigorsky's poetry makes up for any lack of technical wizardry, especially in the more lyrical passages.
Enjoy!
requires a certain type of listener.......2002-06-30
I hate Mozart, and Bach's double is a million miles below Heifetz's level. As for the Brahms, all the technical things were there, but there was one thing missing, INTENSITY!!! Bramns is [poor] if the intensity isn't there, and some of the parts that require exploding just get punched, and the typical aloffness of brahms isn't there. Heifetz is of course amazing, and he is not at fault for these shortcomings. The Conductor and the Orchestra were horreible, and I feel bad that Heifetz had to play with such placid accompianists
Go and buy the recording with Itzahk and Yo-Yo Ma, the two are a perfect match, and Barenboim evokes all the intensity one could handle from a superb Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Heifetz at his Best!!!!!.......2001-12-20
This CD is one to cherish, not just because it is Heifetz. But because it is music. I love the Vivace in the first movement of the Bach double concerto. I have never heard anyone do it at such a brisk pace. Most recordings of it sound dull and boring. This one is breathing life in every note. Heifetz's ability to collaborate with others has always been a problem, but is not very noticeable here. In the Bach Double Concerto, he colaborates with Erick Friedman, a former pupil of his. The sounds of the two violins complement each other so well, you can sometimes forget who is playing what part!! In the Brahms Double concerto for violin and cello, you notice that he and Piatgorsky are completely in sync for the octaves in the beginning of the piece. It is heavenly. The Mozart Sinfonia Concertante was a delight to listen to. It is one of the few classical pieces you will find that use scordatura, which is the changing of the tuning of the strings. Mozart loved the viola, and the music here is exquisitely written for viola. Since the music is basically echoed by the violin an octave higher, you can also say that it is exquisitely written for violin. If you are pondering which Heifetz CD to buy, BUY THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!
riveting.......2000-02-17
The Double Bach is simply heavenly. I listened to the Grumaiux-Krebbers and Oistrach father and son versions. The Heifetz-Friedman is still my top choice - the duo make the music sing out its yearning romanticism. Sound is superb too.

For this price, by it! Heck, for any price, buy it!.......2006-07-29
Yep, masterpiece sums this one up. So does "no brainer": two of the greatest compositions in the literature, played by two of the greatest fiddlists (did I just make a word up?) in history, on one cheap CD. The sound is good, though overly-reverberant and a bit fuzzy in the Brahms (some of you may not notice; me, I like my sound dryer than this), the soloists are stupendous, and, as the Amazon review notes, this is one of the deepest and most emotional Adagios in the Brahms ever. I'm often befuddled by soloists and conductors who play the climax of this movement, the final return of the main singing theme (where the strings begin a pizzicato accompaniment), so glibly: often they just skate over it, as though they're afraid of the emotion or they think it's too schmaltzy for a major masterpiece. Well, in the right hands, it's not schmaltzy; it is, however, deeply *romantic,* and Brahms was, after all, the king of the High Romantics. Listening to this stately, rich performance by David O, you realize why many colleagues (Sviatoslav Richter for one) considered him the greatest violinist of the 20th century. Hard to argue, with playing like this as your evidence.
The Sinfonia Concertante K. 364 is one of my favorite pieces of music, period. It is unique in Mozart's output. With its depth and elegance, structural surety and technical perfection, you'd think it was a "mature" work (if you can call works of anyone who died at 35 "mature"), but no, he wrote this when he was in his early 20s and still in Salzburg living with pops. This is very fine, with son Igor Oistrakh playing violin and daddy handling viola chores and conducting, but it's not quite my first choice: that honor would go to Stern and Zukerman with Barenboim on Sony. Before you write that one off because of Barenboim, I should hasten to add that he stays out of the way and doesn't muck things up too much, conducting with a little too much thickness in spots but otherwise okay. And Stern and Zukerman *own own own* this work. Their interplay is incredible and they are so tight you'd think they are joined at the hip, and their tone is beautiful and burnished. That's not to say that this is a bad recording by any means, and I'm glad I have it, but the listener who is as passionate about K. 364 as I am should also own the Stern/Zukerman collaboration, and it is available on CD, so rejoice.
The booklet inside is quite amusing and bizarre in its layout and artwork--open it up and you'll see what I mean: paintings are cropped in non-sensical ways. Underneath the plastic that holds the CD in place is reproduced a painting called The Flower Seller by William Powell Frith. It has no relationship with either work. I think record companies just randomly pick old-fashioned artwork for their CDs, whether it makes any sense or not. No wonder few people today besides Klaus Heymann know how to run a classical label.
But who cares about artwork? You want to look at paintings, go to a museum. You want two German masterpieces played brilliantly and at a great price, buy this CD. As I said, a no-brainer. Just like the people who brought it to you.
Excellent Performances but Mozart outshines Brahms.......2006-07-03
With both Oistrakhs and legendary conductor Klemperer, it certainly is no shock to see this CD rated at 5 stars and I am not going to disagree. Considering the budget price, this CD should be in any serious classical collection. When I listened to it, I enjoyed the Mozart much better. As much I respect Otto Klemperer, I have often found his conducting to be over serious. Without Klemperer, the Mozart sounds much more joyous and the music really sings. And the string playing of the Oistrakhs is simply incredible. Before EMI sends this CD to a mid-price label, grab it now.
Great, but the Szell/Oistrakh is far better.......2006-02-15
This is indeed a great performance of the Brahms, though it is not a patch on the outstanding Szell/Oistrakh recording in the so-called "Great Recordings of the Century" series. And in case anyone thinks I am biased, I bought this recording as well, being the die-hard Klemperer fan that I am. And yes, I'm afraid to say that Szell knocks him for six. For me the best thing about this CD has to be the Mozart, which is glorious.
I would give the Brahms about a 3 out of five, for what feels to me like occasional moments of drift in Klemperer's accompaniment, and moments of not-quite-so-good interpretation from Oistrakh (if this is horrifying you, please do compare this recording with his performance with Szell, where his playing and Szell's accompaniment are peerless. I would be amazed if you disagreed). Five stars for the Mozart... and I am not a big Mozart fan either...
A noble performance that could use remastering.......2006-02-11
For some reason EMi didn't include this famous 1960 Brhams violin concerto in their Klemperer Edition, so the suond is a bit glassy in this early digital version. The acoustic is large, with lots of hall echo, making the French Radio Orch. sound as big as all outdoors, but Klemperer conducts on a grand scale, so the two seem to match. The tangy French woodwins are a plus here. Klemperer's tempos are moderate throughout, and although it obviously helps to have a great Brahms conductor on the podium, what strikes me about this reading is how compatible Oistrakh and Klemperer are; their intentions blend seamlessly. I side with the other reviewers here who nominate this as one of the greatest readings of this concerto in modern sound.
The Mozart Sinfonia Concertante gets a large-scale reading, too, abetted by very close sound for both orchestra and the two soloists. Despite some absent delicacy and refinement, the performance is thoroughly musical and bracingly direct. Oistrakh's conducting verges on the romantic, in keeping with the style he and son Igor apply to the work. In all, a bargain CD not to be missed, yet I will replace it in a shot if EMI ever gets around to remastering the sound.
Great combination of romanticism and classicism.......2005-06-05
The combination of violin virtuoso David Oistrakh with conductor Otto Klemperer, a legend by itself, is almost always a guarantee for a legendary recording. The disc, originally recorded in 1960, opens with Violin concerto in D, op.77 by Johannes Brahms; a highly romantic violin concerto which is in my opinion performed with just the right touch of expression. It is highly moving without becoming overly sentimental. The same applies to the Sonfonia concertante by Mozart, written exactly a century before Brahms published his violin concerto. The sound recording quality is excellent without being overly pumped-up. A deeply moving experience and highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
for you storm lovers.......2006-07-20
Refreshing, thundering, energetic and romantic, that's what this collection brings you. It'll certainly put you in the right mood with the right weather. I can't wait for my favorite stormy summer nights. My only complaint is the performance on some of the tracks was barely acceptable (like track 8). All in all, this is a great collection, and this is a great series.
Splendid accompaniment to a storm..........2005-03-15
This is to rainy weather...lightning and thunder and all...what the soundtrack to Fantasia is to that movie. This is not all calm music to relax to but brilliant, passionate recordings with all the peaks and lulls of a storm...another kind of soundtrack, if you will. This is one of my favorites of this magnificent series of Classical Collections.
Whether you like the marketing of these discs or not, I think the thing to realize is this a great music presented at a great price. And the sound is superb and rich....top notch recordings. I've bought 9 of the titles from this series and love them all.
