Bruckner: Symphonie No.8

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Herbert von Karajan identified with the Eighth perhaps more intensely than with any other score in the repertory; it is significant that in February 1989, in what proved to be his last performances outside of Austria, he brought it to New York with the VPO and made it the centerpiece of a three-concert engagement. The air of finality was heavy at those concerts, and Karajan, determined to go out as a conqueror, did just that. This 1988 recording comes very close to recapturing the experience of that live performance. Karajan's careful pacing gives the Eighth time to unfurl, allowing the mystery and tenderness of Bruckner's vision to radiate from some place deep within the paroxysmal intensity of the symphony's argument. The cumulative effect is shattering. Throughout, the Viennese play beyond their limits, as if their lives depended on it. The recorded sound is vivid and of very wide dynamic range. --Ted Libbey

This is truly a great performance. Bruckner's Eighth demands a sense of occasion, not just because of its length and complexity, but because of its huge range of emotional expression. It's also a work that sounds better the slower it goes (Bruckner is one of the few composers about whom this is generally true), and the secret to a superlative rendition lies in finding the right sense of spaciousness without dragging. Clearly, Carlo Maria Giulini and the Vienna Philharmonic are up to the challenge. The tempos are majestic, but the music presses forward inexorably to huge, brass-laden climaxes. It's all captured in gorgeous sound, too. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT TESTAMENT BY A GREAT CONDUCTOR.......2006-01-31

I REMEMBER A COLD WINTERY NIGHT BACK IN 1975 WHEN MY WIFE AND I BRAVED THE LATEST CHICAGO SNOWSTORM TO DRIVE TO ORCHESTRA HALL. IT WOULD BE WORTH IT, I THOUGHT. GIULINI WAS CONDUCTING--THE BRUCKNER 8TH. AFTER A HARRIED BUT SAFE ARRIVAL, WE DISCOVERED THAT THE PROGRAM HAD BEEN CHANGED. APPARENTLY, THE MAESTRO'S COPY OF THE SCORE WAS MISPLACED, SO HE WOULD SUBSTITUE ANOTHER WORK. A NOTE OF APOLOGY BY THIS ELEGANT MASTER WAS ENCLOSED IN THE PROGRAM.
I THINK OF THAT NIGHT EVERYTIME I LISTEN TO THIS LANDMARK RECORDING BY ONE THE GREATEST OF ALL MUSICAL COMBINATIONS--CARLO MARIA GIULINI AND THE VIENNA PHILHARMONIC. THE SECRET TO A REALLY GREAT SYMPHONY ISN'T THE OPENING MOVEMENT OR THE GRAND FINALE, BUT THE ADAGIO. BRUCKNER'S ADAGIOS ARE AMONGST THE FINEST EVER WRITTEN. THEY ARE PERFECT IN EVERY WAY, NOTE FOR NOTE. GIULINI AND THE VPO BUILD THE MAJESTY OF THIS LONG MOVEMENT WITH SUCH DEVOTION AND AFFECTION THAT ONE IS ALMOST AFRAID TO BLINK, LET ALONE BREATHE. BUY THIS DISC WITHOUT DELAY! SHUT OFF THE PHONE, CLOSE THE WINDOWS, GIVE THE DOG A BONE AND SPEND ABOUT 80 MINUTES WITH THE OTHERWORLDINESS OF THIS GLORIOUS AND MOVING WORK. THIS IS NO ORDINARY RECORDING--THIS IS SPECIAL. INCIDENTALY, THE WORK THAT WE HEARD ON THAT JANUARY NIGHT WAS MAHLER'S 9TH.

5 out of 5 stars Impact: The Mighty Bruckner Eighth.......2006-01-07

Being in the presence of a live concert performance of the Bruckner Symphony No. 8 is an experience like no other. The impact of his journey of life through death to the glories of the spiritual realm can consume all the air in a concert hall, leaving the audience quietly speechless and motionless as the finale ends. It is a great masterpiece, one of the most brilliantly conceived and written symphonic works in the literature, and that is probably why it often serves as the valedictory for conductors.

This performance by Carlo Maria Giulini and the Vienna Philharmonic recorded in 1995 remains one of the most moving, most profoundly spiritual of any of the nearly 150 recorded versions in the catalogue. Giulini was simply one of the last of the truly Romantic conductors and though his repertoire was rather narrow, his mastery of the works he chose to conduct is nearly matchless. This recording is wondrous with Giulini's proclivity for slow tempi working for the symphony instead of competing with it. But great as this recording is (and we are fortunate that he left this legacy) it cannot compare to a live performance: Giulini's final concert in his tenure with the Los Angeles Philharmonic offered his definitive reading of the 8th that remains indelibly in the minds of those fortunate to have been in the audience.

But great Brucknerian conductors are not gone. The other first class recording of this symphony by Pierre Boulez leading the same orchestra in a live performance is a phenomenon and deserves its position next to the great recordings. And the happy news is that finally, nearing seventy, Zubin Mehta has absorbed the majesty of this work and now can join the ranks of the great Brucknerians. As guest conductor in a current series performance also honoring his past tenure of the Los Angeles Philharmonic he sculpted Bruckner's 1890 version into an evening that, aided by the extraordinary acoustics of Disney Hall, will remain an experience as close to heaven as one can reach. Perhaps it takes a lifetime of conducting to cope with this work. We can only be grateful that the legacy of Bruckner conductors lives. Grady Harp, January 06

5 out of 5 stars Superb Bruckner!.......2005-06-17

I am still shocked due the loss of this superb and giant director. His integrity and artistic conviction, approach, commitment and personal statement was always under the music by itself. His readings were far beyond the score. He owned that touch of distinction so characteristic of the great conductors of the past. And I guess the real concern by the searching of the meaning of the work, the sense of the modulation, character and intention of the score do not seem nowadays a real problem. The point is that if you conduct without this premise, your role at the podium has no sense. We are talking about the singularity inside the homogeneity.
Giulini the maestro; In memoriam!

5 out of 5 stars Justly acclaimed recording of Bruckner's mighty Eighth.......2004-07-15

Having heard Giulini's fantastic DG recording of Bruckner's Ninth Symphony, I looked forward to hearing his similarly majestic way with what is arguably Bruckner's greatest finished symphony, the mighty Eighth.

Other than Bruckner's Fifth, his Eighth is perhaps his most completely successful symphonic utterance. If the Adagio is not necessarily his best slow movement, it certainly comes very close (that powerful Adagio of his Ninth is pretty hard to beat). But there can be no doubt that, for his Eighth Symphony, Bruckner never wrote a greater Finale---episodic, maybe, but still one of his most thrilling, with a towering coda that counts as one of Bruckner's mightiest symphonic moments.

In short, I find Bruckner's Eighth to be one of the great works of the symphonic literature, and Carlo Maria Giulini and the Vienna Philharmonic on this two-disc recording come near doing it full justice. It is a performance of truly epic proportions, with the VPO playing with their usual technical brilliance and creating some grand and glorious sounds, particularly the brass. Despite the slow tempos of the first two movements, they never drag (the Scherzo always feels like a true scherzo in its outer sections); the Adagio is second to none, marvelously played and conducted, with Giulini once again choosing a very slow tempo but sustaining it near-miraculously (it truly sounds as spiritual as Bruckner must have intended); and the Finale is a truly grand summation of all that has come before, with a coda that is truly majestic in this performance.

Overall, I think this oft-acclaimed Giulini Eighth is worth the hype as one of the great recorded accounts of this symphony. For those, though, who only want to have one recording of this work for their shelves---well, that is quite a decision to make. For me, it comes down to this Giulini recording and Herbert von Karajan's equally powerful DG recording with the same orchestra released about five years later. I dunno...both have their really good points, making choice difficult. I like Giulini's first and second movements slightly better than Karajan's, who is, I think, a little too heavy-handed in both movements. (Giulini's reading of the Scherzo, for instance, seems much more like an actual scherzo than Karajan's does.) Both have equally moving readings of the Adagio, Karajan's just as moving as Giulini's even with a quicker tempo. It is with the Finale, though, that I rather prefer Karajan's reading over Giulini's---the former conductor effortlessly binds the whole big structure together into a fiery symphonic whole, whereas Giulini sometimes comes off as slightly more disjointed and episodic by comparison.

So, for those who are looking only for one version of this symphony to own, it's a tough call between Giulini and Karajan. Ideally, though, you should own both: both conductors may use different editions of the score (I will not get into discussion about the whole argument about various extant editions regarding this symphony), but both will convince you of this music's greatness. Any recording of this mighty piece that accomplishes that must be counted as a success, and Giulini's performance, like Karajan's, is surely that. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Great Recordings Of Bruckner's 8th Symphony.......2001-12-20

This is undoubtedly one of the finest recordings of Bruckner's 8th Symphony. Giulini leads the Vienna Philharmonic in one of the most vibrant, dynamic performances of this symphony that I've heard. He skillfully uses broad tempi to lead the orchestra into thunderous climaxes noted for the brass section's intense, dramatic playing. Giulini seems sure of himself and where he wants to lead the orchestra through the dense textures of Bruckner's score. The sound quality is extremely vivid and warm, as well as well balanced. Those looking for a splendid interpretation of Bruckner's 8th Symphony won't be disappointed with this recording.

This latest compilation release from Deutsche Grammophon, hot on the heels of The Yellow Guide to Opera, consists of not only three CDs, but also a 144-page booklet that provides biographies of 100 composers, a glossary explaining 100 musical terms, and notes on each of the 42 tracks on the discs. Aimed, clearly, at newcomers to classical music, the three discs cover almost five centuries of music, arranged chronologically from the Kyrie of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli to Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Orchestral, chamber, and vocal are all represented, performed by a roster of celebrated names: the Amadeus Quartet, Martha Argerich, the Vienna Philharmonic, and Herbert von Karajan, to name but a few. All in all, a value-for-your-money way to either become more familiar with classical music or glimpse some of the treasures of the DG archive. --Rebecca Agnew

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Opera.......2002-01-09

For those persons looking for an introduction to Opera this compilation is an excellent beginning. The recording quality is pretty good overall, and the performances are both interesting and satisfying.

I keep listening to these CD's, and they always sound fresh and fun.

After listening to this album I find myself wanting to learn more about Opera.

4 out of 5 stars At Work with Power Clasics.......2000-01-20

Using the 10 CD set of Power Classics over the past five years while "working" daily on Nordic Trak has been a great help. The relatively short segments break up the workout and provide a welcome support for my efforts. The variety of selections available relieve boredom although, I must admit, when one selection finishes I can now mentally hum the next intro. I recommend this set highly for any strenuous workout program.

Eugen Jochum was the ultimate Bruckner conductor. He recorded the complete symphonies twice, once on DG and once for EMI (with the Staatskapelle Dresden). Both sets are thoroughly recommended, but this first one has always had a special place in the hearts of collectors, if only for nostalgic reasons. It was the first complete cycle, and although it was later overshadowed by Herbert von Karajan's highly publicized recordings for the same label, it's interesting to note that Jochum is still in print (for now), while Karajan is not. Jochum brought to Bruckner's music a human warmth and lyricism that only served to highlight the music's spiritual qualities. He preferred flexible speeds that never dragged, and the result is a uniquely complete and exciting view of the composer: in short, a musical testament. --David Hurwitz

          4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Interpretation.......2005-12-18

You've all covered the points pretty well; but don't any of you notice the disturbing phasing in-and-out of stereo in the 5th, JUST as the final apotheosis gets underway? Now which of you has bought the latest re-packaging of this, and can you tell me if this blotchy sound was corrected? (It may be the unfortunate state of the master-tape; but you'd think with all the miracles with computers these days, they could fix this...)

5 out of 5 stars The best Bruckner cycle ever recorded.......2005-07-26

I know some think the Karajan's boxed set is better than Jochum, but I respectfully disagree with that view. Jochum has a spirituality that he brings to his readings of the Bruckner symphonies, that really impresses me. His reading of the 4th is the best by a small margin over a few others. I would really like to talk about the superb version of the 7th. The great adagio is simply masterly in the hands of Jochum. I have been brought to tears quite a few times by listening to this version. At almost 25 minutes (a lot of versions clock in at about 21 minutes)it's not too long in the least, but paced just right. This set doesn't have the best 9th, but it's right up there with the best. I do agree with one of your previous reviewers, that the Haas version would have been a better choice for the 8th symphony, but he does a pretty bang up job using the Nowak version if you ask me. If you would like to try a definitive version of the Haas edition of the 8th symphony, try the VPO conducted by Herbert Von Karajan from the late 80's on the DG label. Some guides (like the Penguin guide) prefer the Karajan boxed set over the Jochum, but what do they know anyway. I also have the Dresden State boxed set conducted by Jochum, which does have a more full-bodied sound quality, but his insights in this earlier DG set are quite special.
DG has just re-released and repackaged this into a much thinner box with each disc in a sleeve, but I like my discs in the regular jewel cases like old times. Buy this DG set, you won't regret your decision.

3 out of 5 stars Nowak for 8 spoils the set.......2005-02-22

Because Jochum follows Nowak for Sym 8 (not Haas), this spoils the whole set, in my view. Haas is IMPERATIVE for the slow movement of Sym 8 (see Robert Simpson's book).

Sound is not wonderful in this set either (quite a bit of hiss).

But the performance of Sym 2 is great, so the set does have good bits.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Ultimate Bruckner Cycle!!!.......2005-02-07

I remember listening to the old lps of Jochum doing the Bruckner symphonies and can honestly say they have yet to be interpretively passed. Where others plod and linger sentimentally Jochum phrases and moves things along. In the very difficult works like Nos. 5 and 6 there is also no conductor except Klemperer who can conduct these.

The Bavarian Radio Orchestra in No.5 is easily the finest interpretation put on record. The later matching of Jochum with Dresden is fine but seems to lack the personal touch. On top of this Jochum never allows the Brass to overblow and ruin the texture of any of these works! Every nuance and texture is allowed to stand out!

No. 9 is certainly the very best performance and can sit along Walter and Karajan anyday! As for the sound it is very fine, but when all of these symphonies are given such special playing and feeling you have one of the greatest buys of all time in the classical CD World!

4 out of 5 stars Distinctive, often compelling Bruckner from Jochum.......2004-11-19

Eugen Jochum's DG cycle of the Bruckner symphonies with both the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic was the first ever issued on LP in one set; for that reason, this set will always have its place in classical-recording history. For some, that will be enough to make this a set worth checking out. If you're looking for one representative set for your own personal collection, though...then choice is arguably more difficult.

Jochum, of course, always conducted the Bruckner symphonies in a manner that is very different from that of another famous Bruckner authority, Herbert von Karajan (whose own DG cycle from the later '70s to the early '80s I have not yet heard in its entirety). The former is more in the romantic Wilhelm Furtwangler mold, especially in his use of flexible tempi in almost all of the symphonies in one instance or another.

For those who consider Bruckner "slow" and "boring," these may be the performances to change your mind, since for the most part these are lively, well-thought-out, authoritative performance that truly bring life and passion to Bruckner's music. That said, having heard a reasonable variety of different approaches to these symphonic peaks, I must say that I find Karajan's and Haitink's steadier, more far-seeing approach preferable overall, and that sometimes Jochum's enthusiasm, infectious though it is, gets the better of him. The performances of Bruckner's 4th and 7th Symphonies suffer somewhat in this respect; his unmarked tempo manipulations don't always convince, sacrificing structural wholeness---certainly important in Bruckner's music especially---to the passion of particular moments.

And yet the whole cycle, in the end, comes off better than the sum of its parts. Throughout these performances, whatever you may think of one detail or another, there is never any doubt that Jochum is in full control, that he understands these works (in his own way), and that he truly has something to say about them. His authority shines through in these performances, and that certainly counts for something; these are far from negligible, hardly routine performances, and for that reason alone worth hearing.

The highlights: Jochum's performances of Bruckner's first three symphonies---especially the beautiful 2nd---make very good cases for these rarely-played works. Despite my misgivings about certain aspects of this performance of the popular 4th, as a whole it is also a distingushed reading, very dramatic, and with a sublime slow movement. Jochum's 9th is also very good, with a moving, long-breathed Adagio. But the absolute best performance of this set is this 1958 account of the 5th, a symphony of Bruckner's Jochum loved above the others. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra play terrifically throughout, and the brass (with 11 added players) is simply glorious as the symphony winds down with its powerful concluding chorale. This, I think, is a better performance than either Jochum's later Dresden recording or Karajan's much-acclaimed 1976 DG take (though it doesn't quite match Haitink's 1972 Concertgebouw performance, still a personal favorite of mine).

In the end, whatever you may think of Jochum's distinctive view of Bruckner the symphonist, these are still performances of intelligence and convincing (for the most part) fervor and enthusiasm. It may not be the absolute best set available, but it deserves to be heard. Recommended.

          4 out of 5 stars Hot Dang!.......2001-11-11

Something that's been around for 500 years couldn't be that bad - and the Vienna Boys Choir is no exception. These boys can sing!

Their performance of selections from Mozart's Requiem, the Ave Maria, and Handel's Messiah are all spectacular. Boys' voices add a certain extra degree of authenticity not provided by women's voices. It makes it sound a little more like it did when Mozart or Handel wrote it (or at least I think it does - it's not like I was there).

I'm not a huge choral fan but I did enjoy this CD. If you enjoy choral music, definitely acquire this disc. If you tolerate choral music or classical music, give this one a try. If you like neither choral music nor classical music, what are you doing in the classical music section?

5 out of 5 stars you have to get this cd.......2001-03-22

I'm a vienna boys choir fan since 15 years, I admire them in my city too, Torreon, México, I have listened hundreds times and it has very beatiful songs and the choir is great, principaly requiems and OF COURSE, the ex-vienna boy chor song's by Shubert, AVE MARIA, it's great, you feel an enormous peace, you simply can not stop listening, again and again and again, I think, you have to get this cd. The solist boy has a beatiful voice. It is an excellent work. Maybe, depends on your city or country, you have to wait several weeks but you have to get this one!
