The Fog of War [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Errol Morris adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigatethe relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyoalong with 67 other Japanese citiesin 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."As with music previously contributed to Morris films, Philip Glass score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamaras characterand the consequences of his actions. Glass music reinforces Morris effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-08-09
Intriguing historical account of MacNamara- what he was thinking, what he did not say during two administrations involved in the Viet Name war. Use of film footage and Philip Glass' eerie and ominous soundtrack further developed the power of this film.
The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05
Ever thought about what it would be like to watch a film with no muscial score? I have and I did for this documentary. Believe me when I write this, there's no way this film would have been as good without Glass' melodic brutality looming in the background.
Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."
The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.
In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.
A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24
Errol Morris is the best documentary film maker ever and The Fog of War is his crowning achievement. The film explores the complexity of war and how it evolves. There is no political bias or agenda here...just plain truth and facts. Great work. Equal to the task is Phillip Glass's soundtrack. The music is haunting and eerie.
ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31
I'll keep this review short, just like the length of the pieces on the CD. This is yet another great score by Glass, and superbly recorded as well. Glass uses his classic strings and percussion to great effect and oftentimes great surprise as well.
This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?
The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!
Glass' dramatic score is Fog's 'secret sauce'.......2004-03-22
If you've seen Errol Morris' "The Fog of War," you know that a big part of what makes the movie click is Phillip Glass' outstanding soundtrack. Morris and Glass have worked together before and it shows. Morris' imagery (the falling dominos, the accelerating list of Japanese cities, JFK's slow-blinking visage before TV cameras) appears to be literally lifted off the screen into 3-D by the strength of Glass' score. I don't think you'll find another movie (certainly no other documentary) where the words, images and music mesh with such dramatic effect.

Album Description
It has been said that Philip Glass is the `Godfather of Trance' and evidence of that is found in the remixes that a number of young producers/musicians began sending to Orange Mountain Music as early as 2002. These unsolicitated mixes became the genesis for Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed (release date Sept 2005). This CD presents a very diverse program without any one dominant style. The artists are Androoval from Uruguay, Robert Bell from Australia, Brian Bender from the US, Hector Castillo from Venezuela, Taylor Dupree from the US, Sebastian Escofet from Argentina, impLOG, from the US, Woody McBride DJ ESP from the US, Marcos Romero from Uruguay, Kate Simko from the US, Dietrich Schoenemann from the US, Luciano Supervielle from Uruguay and Dave Wesley from the US.
We invite you to immerse yourself in Glasscuts, Philip Glass Remixed with open ears to experience a Glass that is reminiscent of the past, but with an adventurous contemporary twist.
Customer Reviews:
This is just awful - I was suckered by the excellence Reich Remixed.......2006-07-23
I just assumed that this would be as equally wonderful, and that Glass' music would be even more translatable into the "trance" genre, or whatever the kids are calling it nowadays.
Sadly, it seems that this was done by junior high kids with a computer and Acid Foundry or whatever that cheap software is.
No creativity, and, oddly enough, not even any real sense of Glass' music still being in the "remix".
I am a huge fan of Glass; I am not a fan of this kind of music, but since I am also a fan of Reich and since, to my total surprise, I am quite enthralled by the Reich Remixed CD, I figured I really needed to give this CD a shot.
What a waste. This is totally amateur, but without the occasional genius that some amateur can manage. Strictly, totally, and banal amateur yuckiness.
a huge letdown..........2005-12-21
Yeah, it's fun and easy to beat up on remix albums since there are so many mediocre and terrible ones out there... but, wait: here's a great idea... let's give the pioneering, repetitive, trance-like minimalist music of Philip Glass the remix treatment... after all, Reich: Remixed was fabulous... surely the same kind of creativity can be unleashed in this project... But alas, something went terribly wrong here... these are mostly unbearably monotonous, grating, overlong, amateurish productions by remixers who don't seem to even GET (or enjoy?) Glass' music. A real missed opportunity and a huge letdown... ick...
The Ever Recyclable Glass .......2005-11-20
This is just another insipid release from the Orange Mountain label, which keeps putting out anything with the Philip Glass
name on it - even if it is flagrant garbage. Several releases have been issued which about 90% have the same old songs, just performed by different people. In fact, Philip Glass has become more banal and bovine in the last few years because he knows anything with his name on it will sell to the trendy modernistic music crowd. Overall, I believe it is time to stop
recycling Glass.
Pop music with only a hint of Philip Glass.......2005-10-28
This music should be categorized under the "popular music" category, not "classical". All the pieces have an incessant drum beat typical of popular music. This is unlike any other Philip Glass CD that I have and I have about a dozen of them. Where can I get rid of this?
Sound Effects.......2005-09-24
When this album was announced, I was quite looking forward to it; before hearing anything, I compared it to the wonderful work done on "Reich Remixed" which takes some daring approaches to Reich's music and does an excellent job (with a few exceptions) of being new and exciting. Unfortunately, Glass Remixed isn't as daring or as good.
Much of the music is overshadowed with Glass's music and themes. It's as if someone was playing the original music in the background and sound effects were added to it. Throughout listening to Remixed, these sound effects got in the way of the music and I ended up digging out the original pieces and listening to them. However, there are some excellent pieces of interpretation contained within: Etude #2, the Tirol Concerto, and the Saxophone Concerto stand out (especially the Saxophone Concerto since I don't care for the original piece).
The other mark against this effort is all the work had to come from the Orange Mountain Music catalog due to ownership complications. This is not to say there aren't outstanding pieces in the catalog, but this restriction limits most of Glass's seminal works from being considered.
As a huge Glass fan, I was mildly disappointed, but I applaud the effort and the concept behind it.

A Match Made in Heaven.......2001-11-21
The guitar and recorder are a lovely sonic match, blending into a lyrical intimacy. Michala Petri has been the international champion of the recorder since her teen years, combining unequalled technical mastery with musical expression seemingly beyond the ability of this relatively primitive and limited instrument. Now in her forties and as ever breaking new ground for the recorder, she has combined with her husband, the excellent guitarist Lars Hannibal, to record an album of transcriptions for recorder and guitar.
While it is not at all unusual to hear recorder and guitar together, it is unusual to hear them playing music written less than two centuries ago. Most of the pieces transcribed here date from the romantic and post-romantic. Most are familiar short works by such as Grieg, Satie, Faure, and Nielsen. There is a bent toward the haunting, such as the lost-in-time 'Sicilienne' from Faure's 'Pelleas et Melisande', and some of Grieg's piano miniatures evoking (or invoking) his special Nordic forest magic. In every case, the two master performers blend seamlessly, and range from amazing feats to the most intense expressiveness.
This album excels our time-in-CD-player test, and is the album most likely to be listened to by my wife and I as we fall asleep. Sometimes, though, I stay awake because I can't stop listening.
P.S. We were once blessed to visit with Michala Petri following a recital in Toronto. She is as gracious in person as on stage.

an excellent American black metal album.......2002-08-23
Through the Eyes of Night solidifies Fog's position in the up and coming American black metal sceen. They can easily hold their own against the old guard Norwegian bands in terms of musicianship. This LP doesn't have a single weak track, it is remarkable from start to finish. Fog's sound could be described as similar to the first two albums from Emperor, though Fog seems to show a somewhat more diverse sound. The album retains a distinctive black metal feel, while showing occasional thrash and death metal influences. The music is very chaotic but simultaneously atmospheric. The drumming is extremely fast but admirably controlled. Vocals by "Lord Typhus" have the typical black metal delivery and are consistant throughout the album. Fog's lyrics are focused on traditional black metal themes and are never trite or overdone. Fans of Mayhem, Darkthrone, and older Emperor will surely enjoy this overlooked USBM release.
Blistering, awesome Black Metal........2001-07-10
FOG "Through the Eyes of Night..." is a recent release from an American (gasp!) black metal band. This is great stuff. Lightning fast, fretboard flying riffing, pummeling drums, raspy vocals, and crystal clear production. In fact, the production is so good that the bass is actually loud. FOG is evocative of bands such as SATYRICON and early GORGOROTH and is, therefore, not very original. However, the music is EXTREMELY well played and the songwriting is excellent. This is technically proficient, non- keyboard driven, pummeling black metal that is quite sophisticated. There's even a "dark ambient" track at the end that is actually quite eerie without becoming a cliche! Simply put, you will not be disappointed with FOG. Standouts: Just about every song but I especially like "By The Axe We Rule".
