Shostakovich Plays Shostakovich

Editorial Reviews

It is always salutary to hear Shostakovich perform his own music. If his own performances are any indication of how he intended his music to be played, then current performances of his music are much too slow--and much too serious. Compare the composer's own, never-before-released recording of the Violin Sonata with David Oistrakh (taped in the violinist's apartment in December 1968, just after the work was completed) with the famous one of the official world premiere a few months later. That performance, in which Oistrakh (to whom the work was dedicated) was joined by Sviatoslav Richter, is still available as part of BMG's five-disc David Oistrakh Edition and is irreplaceable. But Shostakovich's tempos in the march theme of the first movement bring an element of unexpected humor to what, even in the Oistrakh-Richter reading, has always seemed unrelievedly grim. Shostakovich, whose playing was by then impaired by his polio, sometimes struggles with the notes.

No such qualifications attach to the 1947 performance of the Piano Trio in E Minor (with Oistrakh and cellist Milos Sadlo) and the 1946 recording of the Cello Sonata in D Minor, in which Shostakovich partners with Daniel Shafran. The Trio, otherwise available only in a somewhat sanitized transfer in Vol. I of Doremi's David Oistrakh Collection, is played with a brutal energy that makes other versions sound sentimental, even naive. The surprisingly well-recorded performance of the Cello Sonata is better, as well as faster, than the celebrated one made 16 years later by the composer with Mstislav Rostropovich. Shafran's cello playing is powerful without sounding ponderous, and poetic without a trace of affectation. His performance is also filled with imaginative touches--such as the eerie timbral effects created by the way he accelerates during the scherzo's glissandi. The composer must have loved the zest with which Shafran played his music, and listeners will, too. --Stephen Wigler

5 out of 5 stars Shostakovich The Genius.......2002-04-27

Shostakovich was clearly a genius and this CD shows that. He lived under such torture under the Soviet power and tried to express his sadness in his music - unfortunately though, he was nearly arrested for writing music that Stalin did not like.
I also recomend listening to Shostakovich's Piano Preludes.
I believe that these are some of his only works in which the composer expresses himself truely. But this CD also shows that, which is why i THOROUGHLY recomend it.

Email me to hear some of my compositions, inspired by the genius of Shostakovich.

4 out of 5 stars Thundering recording!.......2006-08-31

As all we know Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto found in William Kapell, ( pitifully not available in commercial circuits, and fortunately released in live recordings achieved by random circumstances I have a copy in cassette in perfect state) its more fervent and passionate performer. So under this perspective we should consider this version among the most emblematic ones but keeping in mind the previous statement.

Gilels added his peerless and faultless interpretative technique, with the required touch of élan, pulse, vitality, vigorous passion and musicality this score demands and the result was a supreme reading that has nothing to envy respect the well known performances. Although it lacks of that flaming attacks so typical of Vladimir Horowitz and Fritz Reiner of 1953, it possesses that introspection and grandeur that compensates by far, the previous recording.

A recommended choice, in case you have not Kapell' s performance.

Saint Saens Second piano concerto has name and surname: Gabriel Tachino and Earl Wild.

4 out of 5 stars never heard of this philharmonie .......2006-01-19

To begin with i have never heard of this philharmonie. The recording is okay, not above average or something like that. Andree Cluytens is a very good conductor. This recording does not pay this man the right regards. To end: okay, just okay. Tghe recording Cl;audio Abbado and Berlin Philh have made for DG is much better.

5 out of 5 stars Monumental recording of Rakhmaninov's 3rd concerto.......2002-10-26

This is Emil Gilels' historical recording of the concerto. The Orchestra is a little bit weak when compared with the Soloist and the sound is sometimes hollow.

In a musical sense, this achieved the very top of the concerto despite some wrong notes and finger-slips(really bad one in the climax of 2nd movement). Unfortunately we can't listen to Emil Gilels' performance in USSR.

5 out of 5 stars A disc to treasure!.......2000-10-08

Here is a Rachmaninov Third to treasure. More daring than Rubinstein's, forget Horowitz! and Argerich? Argerich is extraordinary and Gilels is deep; Argerich eats the soul of the piece, and Gilels leaves the soul of it ripened and burnished -ready for eating. This is a superb rendition of the Rachmaninov, out-classing all the others that come to mind. And Saint-Saens' marvelous G Minor- Gilels sets the third movement rockin and rollin, infusing those propulsive splashes with an imperial regard, and rescuing by elegance music that seems always to verge on an unsatisfying gallic curtsey. Is there nothing that escapes this pianist's understanding? The Paris Conservatory Society orchestra acquits itself as a perfect partner in everything they do here; I don't know Cluyten's work well, but one gets the feeling this superb orchestra could play by its own internal mechanics, so naturally do the players cohere. I have recordings of the Shostakovich by Ashkenazy, Postnikova, Richter- THIS rendition is written in language of the heart. This is supernatural playing of a colossal intelligence and sensibility. The seemingly infinite gifts of Gilels leave his great countryman's Prelude more beautiful than before, reeling in fire after spinning it round our heads! What an exceptional artist this man is! You cannot imagine the satisfaction given by the Rachmaninov; fail to purchase this disc at the risk of remaining merely enamoured - you could be all of beguiled!

4 out of 5 stars Incredibly impressive!.......1999-04-23

This is one of the most satisfying performances of the Rachmaninoff 3rd - Gilels has a technique which permits him to achieve wonders with the score! Andre Cluytens is a superb accompanist - the piano comes through as it should, and nowhere is Gilels drowned. The fastish tempi works tremendously well - the short cadenza is performed superbly. I wish that Gilels had used his wonderful technique to the full and performed the bigger cadenza - it would have been outstanding. However, a traditional reading is great, and in the hands of Gilels it is quite simply stunning. Highly recommended!

Every good wish,

Yenda.

5 out of 5 stars Rostropovich Playing Two Western Premiere Works.......2002-06-08

The interesting piece on this CD for me is the Khachaturian Concerto Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra. Reviews that I have read concerning this disc have downplayed this work as not very important but well played. I have loved Khachaturian's music for many years and find his melodies very appealing. Since 1948, when Soviet artists were denounced, it is said he has played it safe and written works acceptable to the Party. At times, he does extend his compositions a bit too long. While he may not be thought of as a great composer Khachaturian did write a lot of music that is fun to listen to.

I found the Concerto Rhapsody to be a good showpiece for the cello with some great writing for the orchestra. It dates from 1963 and was written for Mstislav Rostropovich and here he gives it a wonderful performance - the Western premiere of this piece. It goes without saying that Rostropovich turns in another remarkable performance of the Shostakovich Second Cello concerto, another work written for him in 1966. This is a darker work that the First concerto, a reaction to the heart attach Shostakovich suffered. This is also the Western premiere of this concerto following the Moscow performance conducted by Svetlanov.

Equally brilliant is the playing in the Rococo Variations of Tchaikovsky. Sir Colin Davis is the conductor in the Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky, and elicits some great playing from the BBC Symphony and the London Symphony. These are live performances but there is no audience noise beyond applause at the end of each work and the first movement of the Shostakovich concerto. The transfer is excellent.

In all, this is a great CD of particular interest for the Khachaturian but no less for the more familiar Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Master.......2005-01-27

Shostakovich can, of course, lay claim to being greatest 20th century composer, or certainly one of three or four. He was also, not surprisingly, a brilliant pianist. His performance of the Preludes and Fugues, one of his many masterworks, is a revelation. Shostakovich was transcendent.

5 out of 5 stars A historic musical document!.......2004-07-05

This CD is a revelation. Shostakovich playing himself with all the athoritative power who he meant ; a great composer and believe or not a very gifted pianist.
In the Piano concert no. 1 Shostakovich plays with caucassian moods ; outrage and histamine . There's one serious performance that rivalizes with this one . Kapell -Ormandy-Philadelphia of 1945 .
The second concert is a true revelation. The second movement is not only filled with arresting lyricism but itself means a jump to the future. Think in the andante of the ninth concert for piano of Mozart or in the Adagio of the Ninth of Bruckner : There are cosmical raptures who goes far beyond a simple moment of divine inspiration.
Eugene Liszt made a great performance in the fifties too, but never wins with that.
If you're a serious collector of unforgettable issues ; thius recording is a must!

1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy the Full-Price Title!.......2003-11-03

This is a terrific CD but don't buy the full-price version of this title. The exact same performances have been recently reissued at a mid-line price in EMI's Great Recordings of the Century series (see my review). Same great music at a much lower price! Don't make the same mistake I did!

5 out of 5 stars The Fast and the Furious!.......2001-08-12

If you are looking for a recording of the first piano concerto, look no further - this one tops them all. While other interpretations may offer more subtle phrasing and nuance, the composer's own performance in pure energy. And, after all - that's what the piece is all about. The sound is amazing for a mono recording, and should not be a factor in the decision. The only other available recording of Shostakovich humself playing this piece (a recently deleted Revelation recording from about a decade earlier) suffers from scratchy, muffled sound. Others, including Andsnes on EMI, are excellent in their own right, but every other player I've heard tends to cop out with too much rubato in the fast, rollicking finale. Shostakovich blasts right through it, and what he sometimes lacks in precision, he makes up for in fiery commitment. Don't hesitate - this one was unavailable in the states for some time and, given the sad state of the recording industry, may not be around as long as it should.

5 out of 5 stars Like a shaman's miraculous exorcism!.......2001-01-08

Dmitri Shostakovich was not only great 20th century's composer in Russia but also has hidden talent-pianist. When he entered the Leningrad Conservatory, he studied composition and piano. His classmates were Maria Yudina, Vladimir Sofronitsky and others. And he worked as a pianist in theater and cinema. So, Shostakovich's many early works were composed for piano solo. You can heard Shostakovich's Three fantastic Dances(1922) in this CD. And this CD contains his very important piano works-24 Preludes and Fugues(1950-51)' five excerpts. But this CD's very exciting works are two Piano Concertos. First concerto's orchestral accompaniments are only formal strings and added trumpet soloist. Shostakovich and trumpeter Ludovic Vaillant played very 'poignant' in this concerto. Especially in last fourth movement, Shostakovich played very fast tempi with little rubato and percussionistic touch. In last fanfaronade coda, you'll imagine roller coaster. Second concerto is shorter than first but its sneer and march-like surroundings much better than first-for example, first movement's two 'stupid' and childish fanfare themes. But in second movement, Shostakovich composed and played very lyrical and clarity tones like a Andre Gagnon's lyrical pieces. And third movement without pause, Shostakovich and orchestra played no trouble in some strange 7/8 beat's passages. These documents are all mono recordings. But it has very stabilized and clear sound because EMI's careful restoration. I think these recordings has very excellent level than other Shostakovich's late recordings as a pianist.

        5 out of 5 stars Emotion and Insight - a powerful combination..........2005-09-19

This CD should be on the CD racks of anyone interested in Shostakovich and his music. For several reasons:

        1) because it is so interesting and insightful to hear Shostakovich playing his own music at the piano - remembering that before he turned to composing he was on the verge of a major concert pianist career...
        2) because the playing and singing is extremely heartfelt and beautiful - a real PERFORMANCE of the music.
        3) because the CD presents music which is not particularly well known and deserves wider performance (and acclaim).

        A really wonderful CD.
