Murray Perahia's account of the Grieg Concerto is utterly absorbing. The playing is brilliant, but the pianist's approach--more Chopinesque than Lisztian--keeps that brilliance at the service of larger expressive goals. The result is a performance aglow with understated intensity, one in which the prevalent feeling is often melancholy, at times even bleak. Sir Colin Davis draws a wonderfully refined accompaniment from the Bavarian orchestra in this live reading of the score. The recording, from Munich's Philharmonic Hall, is excellent and effectively captures the beautiful tone Perahia coaxes from his piano. --Ted Libbey

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price.The sound quality is decent,however it is not great.This set will not provide you with the crisp,clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Many great pianists have already recorded this now-traditional coupling. Having proven himself to belong in the company of the greats, Andsnes now gets his chance. He has a decided viewpoint on this music, stressing the lyrical elements with some gorgeous tone and phrasing, yet capturing plenty of drive and excitement when required. Jansons seems to challenge his soloist with very energetic readings of the orchestral parts: lots of tympani and broad dynamic contrasts. The collaboration works quite well, and if you don't already have half a dozen CDs with this coupling already in your collection, this one is definitely worth considering. It does have a couple of minor handicaps, though. EMI passed up the opportunity to fill the blank 20 minutes of the disc with some solo music by these composers, and the recorded sound, while well balanced, seems somewhat dull and lacking in presence. --Leslie Gerber

I must admit I was sceptical at first when I heard that Andsnes was releasing this new CD of the Grieg and Schumann concertos. As much as I feared that this might be a run-of-the-mill performance, I found I was very well pleased with the result. Although I own the Lupu CD of these kindred souls of piano concertos (and found them perfectly balanced), I soon found that this Andsnes version runs rings around all the other versions I have heard so far. No matter what other people say, Andsnes is a superb pianist who gives well-rounded and balanced accounts of these two concertos, backed by punchy accompaniment from Jansons and the Berliners, and a sumptuous EMI recording that lacks a little in detail and clarity.

The Grieg concerto starts out with a punchy first movement, energetic and poetic, as if Andsnes and Jansons are setting sparks off at each other. Andsnes' opening flourish is firm and weighty, but he counterbalances it with a due sense of poetry in the quieter sections of the movement. The slow movement is meditative but it never drags the concerto, and Andsnes, true to his Norweigan roots, really relishes the dance-like finale. In the secondary theme of the finale he is given excellent support by the winds, especially the flautist, in evoking the Norweigan fjords that might have inspired this music. The Schumann is a beautifully renderred version, and Andsnes taps more into his poetic gifts here. One hears a continuous forward momentum in this work that I tend to find sorely lacking in other recordings. Andsnes conveys a strength and a vulnerability crucial in this piece, and the first movement really stands out. The Intermezzo ably bridges the first movement and the finale, and one can hear a joie de vivre here.

In short, I would recommend this disc to every lover of classical music and especially piano music, no matter how many other versions of these concertos you have. I think that even though I disagree with most music critics, this was well-deserving of the Rosette and the Gramophone Editor's Choice that it garnered.

The Gift and the Passage of Time.......2005-12-03

Leif Ove Andsnes is wisely pacing his career with recordings not only of varied repertoire and dividing his time with solo collections, chamber ensembles, and collaborations (the magnificent Schubert 'Winterreise' with Ian Bostridge recording, for a fine example!), but he seems to be marking his maturity with repeated recordings of works he has championed. This stunning recoding of the Grieg Piano Concerto benefits enormously from the collaboration with Mariss Jansons and the Berlin Philharmonic.

Recorded live, the sound of this CD is lush and velvety smooth, quite in keeping with Andsnes richly flowing Grieg. This is the quality of commitment to the Grieg that he is currently stunning audiences at the Los Angeles Philharmonic performances. The added pleasure of the Schumann Piano Concerto rounds out a performance that deservedly won the Gramophone Award for Best Concerto category. This is as fine as it gets and should be part of every collection despite the possible duplications of these two works. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

Suspicious.......2005-10-22

I can't help questioning the intention of one of the reviewers named Dag Johansen. He is proactively reviewing most of Andsnes' CDs and giving them very poor rating. In fact, all he is reviewing are Andsnes', no other.
I don't mind that if it is truly his honest opinion but there's something fishy here... why does he keep buying Andsnes' CDs if he hates his playing so much? It's as if he is trying to damage the artist's reputation... Shady....

I have not actully heard this CD or any of Andsnes'. Just felt I needed to report on this.

"perfect" form but no soul.......2005-02-26

Andsnes is indeed a boring pianist. He has this cold, polished and impersonal style completely empty of soul and originality. His playing is totally predictable and when a phrase is repeated it sounds just the same. It seems like he doesn't care what or how he is playing. The only thing that counts is to show off this utterly "perfect" form - this musical emperor's new clothes. His nice and streamlined playing has really nothing to do with great performance. I would prefer listening to Vladimir Horowitz, Grigory Sokolov or Martha Argerich. The Norwegian pianst Einar Steen Nokleberg is a much better interpreter of Grieg.

I don't know if Columbia Records brought them together, but the young Leon Fleisher made almost all of his classic Sixties concerto recordings with George Szell. Their work shone through the dreary, hissy sonics to be found on the Epic label, but here are two recordings--the Grieg and Schumann concertos--in excellent refurbished sonics, by far the best they've ever enjoyed. The solo piano, placed fairly close, and the Cleveland Orch. both sound full and natural, without any edginess at loud volume.

As for the interpretations, the Grieg is revisionist history. At the time (1960) this old horse was almost dead from over-popularity, so Szell and Fleisher slowed the tempo down and replaced dazzling keyboard attack with thoughtful, considered phrasing. It's awfully low key and serious at times, particuarly compared to the blazing reading that Richter gives on EMI, but the two partners are masters at what they do.

In the Schumann their pacing is close to the norm, but again the overall tone is low key, serious, and more classic than romantic. Dynamics heed close to mezzo forte, and there aren't a lot of passionate exchanges between piano and orchestra. The main thing to admire here is Szell's control over the orchestra and Fleisher's natural, unassuming musicianship. I'm not sure I love this reading, but no American pianist since Fleisher, with the exception of Perahia, has made such accomplished recordings of these two chestnuts.

Fantastic Fleisher.......2006-01-08

This CD has been out since 2004, but only recently has it started selling here at Amazon. That is because when this new line of Sony "Great Performances" first came out, they were being offered exclusively through Tower Records, but now thankfully they are available anywhere fine music is sold (I sound like a commercial). Of the dozen or so "GP" reissues this title, featuring the Grieg and Schumann Piano Concertos, is easily the best. Pianist Leon Fleisher and conductor George Szell (along with the Cleveland Orchestra of course) formed a memorable partnership before Fleisher's career came to a tragic, but fortunately temporary, halt. Most notably they produced a brilliant pair of Brahms Concerto recordings, and a Beethoven Concerto Cycle (now scandalously out-of-print) that many still regard as definitive. These 1960 Grieg and Schumann performances are no different, and this disc has to be considered the first choice in this repertoire. I'm still fuming mad at Sony for recently deleting so many of their best CDs, but at least they are continuing to make some classics available once again.

Murray Perahia's account of the Grieg Concerto is utterly absorbing. The playing is brilliant, but the pianist's approach--more Chopinesque than Lisztian--keeps that brilliance at the service of larger expressive goals. The result is a performance aglow with understated intensity, one in which the prevalent feeling is often melancholy, at times even bleak. Sir Colin Davis draws a wonderfully refined accompaniment from the Bavarian orchestra in this live reading of the score. The recording, from Munich's Philharmonic Hall, is excellent and effectively captures the beautiful tone Perahia coaxes from his piano. --Ted Libbey

Masterful Renditions.......2004-05-20

I gotta say, I've heard a lot of people put down Perahia for lack of emotional aesthetics. Coupled with the fact that I cannot STAND classical music when devoid of soul, I had somewhat low expectations for this recording (hence also my introduction to Perahia). It's a good thing I'm open-minded enough to never pre-judge. The Grieg is virtually flawless (there's a few timing issues with the orchestra). The a minor chords come crashing down, one after another, really making you feel in the midst of an epic battle. I've played this concerto, and while I admit that it's hard to play 8 notes (2 big chords) at a time without some kind of purpose, as I said, my expectations were guarded for this specific version. Granted, the music is almost TOO masterfully controlled, but out of that comes devoutly meticulous placement, and since timing is everything, it works to MP's advantage.

I do get a biting emotion out of this. Horowitz, Van Cliburn, etc. etc., all play it differently, but don't dismiss this cd as cold calculated rubbish. Go to the second movement of the Grieg (track 5) and become engulfed by the lyrical beauty - and what touch he has! Those deceptive cadences are SO perfectly planned (if not drawn out just a bit), even though you know what's coming, you still react as if surprised. Predictablity only goes as far as the printed score.

The Grieg is a perfect template for a practicing musician to reference from. It doesn't infuse any eccentric personality traits, but it is a great teaching tool. I'm not as familiar with the Schumann, so it's not my place to critique, other than saying I deduce that my reaction, which is the same as my Grieg commentary, is probably correct. My homage goes to this pianist who doesn't necessarily make the music sound highly unique, so much as he makes it sound PERFECT. And that's for better or worse.

Well worth your time.......2003-07-09

Murray Perahia once admitted to a delight in the inspirational heat-of-the-moment of a live performance. And even though there is no applause at the end of either of these performances (there is, in fact, no noise of any kind from the audience during these recordings) we are told that they are indeed "live." Personally, I feel if your going to go through the trouble of capturing the experience of a live performance why edit out the applause? But that's just my opinion.

Anyway, Perahia (one of my two or three favorite pianists) plays both of these concertos beautifully. As always there is a strong sense of poetry--almost songfulness-in his playing. This does not imply, however, that there is a lack of power or bravura in his playing. Of the two performances, the Grieg is best. The Schumann is not by any means bad, but there are better versions of the piece. Sir Colin Davis and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra provide Perahia with excellent support.

The sound is good, though I thought it was slightly opaque-orchestral textures are not as clear as they should be. But again this is a "live" recording.

In these works, Stephen Kovacevich (also with Sir Colin Davis) is still unsurpassed. Nonetheless, Murray Perahia's versions of these concertos are among the finest in the catalogue.

Perahia & Davis Let the Music Speak for Itself.......2001-10-29

Both of these concertos are played with great feeling by Murray Perahia, and well supported by Colin Davis and the Symphonie-Orchestra des Bayerischen Rundfunks. The Schumann concerto is beautifully, but not overly, scored. The piano part is not excessively demanding, but it does not matter. The result, left in the hands of Perahia here, is a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. The same can be said for the Grieg concerto, written in the same key (A minor) as Schumann's. The music speaks for itself, and Perahia plays with great poetry. The sound quality is very good indeed. Warmly recommended.

The Best.......1999-03-14

When recommending distinguished performances of a work, I do not often label a single performance as "the best" in the catalog. In this case, however, Perahia plays this concerto with such natural flow and complete understanding that he rises head and shoulders above any competition. He is never too grounded in his tempi and his interpretation often takes on a sublime, improvisational feel. What is most outstanding, however, is Perahia's ability to balance thundering virtuosity with an introspective style, and the transitions between these two methods of playing are completely seamless. The orchestral contributions are also wonderful, utterly in tune with Perahia's approach. The balance is exceptional, especially for a live performance, but the bass is a little muddied. This opaqueness might stem from the concert hall acoustics, but I wonder if the engineers could not have made an effort to clean it up a little. Whatever quibbles I have, however, are few and unimportant. The reading of the Schumann concerto is not the best in the catalog, and I prefer Perahia's more recent account to the one that appears hear. The Grieg, as I stated before, is the greatest recorded performance available.

These two concertos are often issued together due to their similarity (same key, etc...). They are not only major works of the romantic repertoire, but they are exquisitely performed by Perahia. I highly recommend this CD.

This collection serves as a descent introduction to some great piano concertos, but the performances are not the best and the recording quality of most of them leaves much to be desired for me. I learned my lesson with regards to the 'best of' classical collections. Personally I'd rather have gotten great recordings of great performances of great classical pieces for a little more money.

This 2 CD set is a dream come true. Martha Argerich playing the Tchaikovsky concerto #1, Stephen Kovacevich playing the Grieg, Schumann, and Brahms Concertos, Misha Dichter playing the Addinsell. Argerich has a complete mastery of the Tchaikovsky concerto, having it recorded it 3 times (w/ Dutoit, Kondrashin, and Abbado); she is a virtuoso who plays with great passion and fire, which makes for such an exciting recording. This recording here is with Kondrashin. Stephen Kovacevich's performance of the Grieg / Schumann is one of the finest interpretations on CD (on par with Murray Perahia and Leif Ove Andsnes). Colin Davis complements Kovacevich well, having conducted the orchestra for Murray Perahia as well on these pieces. Misha Dichter does not disappoint with the Addinsell Concerto, and Kovacevich's performance of the Brahms is also great in musicianship, tempo, and tone. As another reviewer noted, the Brahms is one of the hardest pieces to play.

Years ago, I payed full price for Stephen Kovacevich's version of the Grieg / Schumann on a single disc. Just recently, I discovered this CD collection; for a few bucks more, you can have Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Addinsell as well! This is an outstanding bargain that you cannot pass up -- just for Argerich and Kovacevich. The sound quality is excellent!

These are arguably the four most important (or at least the most popular) piano concertos written after Beethoven's five momentous works in the genre. This 2 CD set contains definitive performances of all four. The Schumann and Grieg were praised in Gramophone magazine "Who would have thought the Grieg and Schumann piano concertos could come up as fresh as paint, as alive with both opulent and delicate emotional fervor as on the day they were written? Stephen Kovacevich's Philips recording, dating from 1970-1, has been tirelessly celebrated for its freshness and poetic vitality, and it remains a benchmark offering." And the BBC Symphony under the direction of Sir Colin Davis does a stunning job adding color behind the soloist and carrying the tutti parts.

Of the several recordings of the Tchaikovsky that feature the stellar Martha Argerich (with Maestros Abbado, Dutoit, and Kord) this is the one to own, and almost worth the price of the whole set: a 1980 live recording with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra at their home base in Munich. (In its original release it is paired with Argerich's Rachmaninoff Third). As frequently as the Tchaikovsky is played, Argerich points out new wonders through the thick chords and piano textures each time you listen. I promise you'll hear hidden lines and counter melodies you never heard before. Tchaikovsky asks the soloist to make a lot of noise in this piece, but Argerich treats the solo part with real finesse and shapes it nicely under her fingers. Wow!

Brahms 2 is certainly the most musically difficult of any piano concerto ever written: its four movements clock in at about 50 minutes of Brahms' best music. Kovecevich is up to the task and this performance rivals those by Serkin, Fleisher, Richter, and Backhaus. There is not a phrase or note out of place; it is immensely satisfying. The Addinsell Warsaw concerto is a nice bonus to bring the total timing on this set over the two-and-a-half hour mark.

Even if you already own one or two of the concertos on this set, you'll be rewarded by the fine interpretations here and the other new additions to your collection. Kovecevich is the real hero of this compilation, but Argerich nearly steals the show. It's too bad that most of Kovacevich's other Brahms recordings have been deleted, but look for more recordings of his such as the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas on EMI. For any classical music lover!

A Great Buy!.......1999-12-20

A bargain price for 2 CDs and 150 minutes of excellent music! I bought these CDs looking for good recordings of the Schumann and Grieg piano concertos. Well, I was not disappointed. Kovacevich's playing is tremendous in both of these pieces, with fine support from Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. I would have been satisfied with just these two recordings for the price I paid, but three other excellent pieces were included as well. None of these recordings is as highly recommendable as the Schumann or the Grieg, but they are good recordings nonetheless. All these things considered, this set of CDs includes some of the best piano concertos along with some excellent performances, so don't pass it up. It's a must buy!

By 1974 Sviatoslav Richter was about to turn 60 and entering his eccentric late phase, in which he made fewer studio recordings, appeared randomly at small towns anywhere from Siberia to the south of France, generally without advance announcment, to play off the cuff, and fell into the habit of playing in dark halls with a reading lamp beside the keybooard to light up the score he insisted on using.

But this 1974 pairing of the Grieg and Schumann piano concertos reveals that the titan wasn't sleeping. In every bar Richter is so oriignal that instead of being a warhorse among warhorses, you feel you've never heard the Grieg concerto before. His approach is plain and rather slow, with no attempt at virtuoso flash. The magic is all in the phrasing, where Richter was peerless, and of course in his lion-like command of tone.

Von Matacic and the Monte Carlo orchestra follow Richter's lead; their part is fairly scrapy, and even in this remastering the EMI sonics are quasi-Soviet, showing a clangy, unpleasant edge in loud passages. Richter is the whole show (unlike the superb pairing of Fleisher and Szell in these concertos), making it hard for me to hear anyone else's Grieg A minor.

Richter competes with his own classic DG recording of the Schuman concerto with Rowicki from 1959, but since he was probably the greatest Schumann pianist of the century, there's no reason to compare the two, only to apreciate both. The timings are nearly identical in all three movements, the orchestras and sound are less than ideal, yet the two conductors are sympathetic. The filler on this generous (73 min.) CD is the same 1962 Papillons recorded live in Italy that EMI has reissued many times. Who cares--it's great.

Richter Revisits Schumann.......2005-01-21

Pianist Sviatoslav Richter was one of the world's greatest interpreters of Schumann, and his 1958 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the Piano Concerto with Witold Rowicki and the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra (currently available on CD in the "DG Originals" series) is most people's first choice recommendation, mine included. This CD in EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" series offers Richter's 1974 remake with conductor Lovro von Matacic and Monte Carlo National Opera Orchestra. It is one of the very best performances available but it would be a lot to ask of any performer to outshine the initial greatness captured on the DG disc. Still, this title is very much worth purchasing, for Richter's Grieg is magical as well and it is a delight to once again hear Matacic in the EMI fold, who after numerous recordings for Walter Legge in the late 1950s and early 60s, seemed to disappear, undeservedly, from international prominence. In fact, for anyone looking for a Grieg/Schumann coupling, I would recommend this title over the Sony Essential Classics disc (where Entremont gives a good Grieg, paired with a brilliant performance by Serkin in the Schumann -- see my review) and the Radu Lupu on Decca Legends. The only coupling I personally prefer to this title is the recent Leon Fleisher/George Szell reissue in Sony's retooled "Great Performances" series, but alas those CDs are being sold exclusively through Tower. So in all, enjoy Richter on a great, but not the greatest, Schumann Piano Concerto of the century.
