Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
After you have heard Hvorostovsky or Thomas Allen, Bernhard Weikl may sound a bit stiff and heavy in the role of the disillusioned, bored young Onegin, who rejects Tatiana's impulsive offer of love and lives to regret it. But Teresa Kubiak's warm, expressive voice and her commanding presence in the last act make the regret more poignant and understandable. Supporting roles are very well filled, and Georg Solti conducts with his usual energy. --Joe McLellan

Customer Reviews:
hmmmm.......2005-09-14
definitely not the best rendition of the popular suite.on the other hand, try finding another one.
stuff is edited,bludgeoned,rather.
tempos verge on comical.
rather disapointing,I really needed a nice version of the sugar plum faerie dance.
will probably stick to Wendy Carlos's,cheesy, runningly cheesy, blue cheese smelly, even,as it might be,still holds the original pace and campy pomp.
...not nuch of a cheese shop is it?
-it's fairly clean.
certainly not contaminated by Cleese!
Good Introduction but poor quality.......2005-09-12
This is a good introduction to Tchaikovsky for the beginner that gives a broad sampling of his work. Considering the price, it's a good value if someone is just wanting to begin exploring classical music or Tchaikovsky in particular.
However, the sound quality on this albumn is quite poor and there are much higher quality Tchaikovsky recordings available.
Tchaikovsky's Greatest Pieces of Music.......2000-09-04
Here are some of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky's greatest works. His Nutcraker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty ballets are the most famous in the repoirtaire. The Symphony No. 5 and 6 are very excellent symphonic orchestrations. However, despite all the good stuff in here from the Russian master, the performers and conductors cannot surpass the beauty and artistry that such Tchaikovsky music masters as Dorati, Markevitch and Ormandy are. So if you want quality Tchaikovsky, get those conductor renditions. However, for a Tchaikovsky beginner, these pieces will get you hooked. This is a good cd to begin with for a Tchaikovsky listener. I am a Tchaikovsky listener ever since a friend recommended his glorious works to me. I am a Mozart fan but Tchaikovsky is undoubtedly the greatest Romantic composer of all time. He combines Russian melodies (Russian dances, mazurkas, waltzes) and gives them a definite Western romantic feel. He was friends with such noted Romantic composers as Camille Saint Saens, known to create such marvelous music of the era- Carnival of the Animals (now popular through Dysney) and Danse Macabre, to name only a small portion. Tchaikovsky also adored Mozart and although he is not exactly a Classical composer, he greatly admires the beauty of Mozart's works. Three cheers for Tchaikovsky !
great music poorely performed........1999-09-18
T. is my favourite composer but the interpretation on this CD is rather like a good effort in high shool
Great!.......1999-04-18
I think that Peter Tchaikovsky is one of the greatest composers ever. His Nutcracker suite and Capriccio Italien are wonderful pieces of music, as well as the rest of his pieces! This CD is definetly worth owning if you like classical music.

Customer Reviews:
masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

Best of the best.......2004-03-14
There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

Surely Björling was one of the greatest tenors of his or any other time, not only for the clarion ring, the purity, and the melting lyricism of his voice, but for his effortless lightness, impeccable intonation, endless breath control, and natural phrasing and line, enhanced by old-fashioned but wonderfully expressive scoops and slides. On this generous two-disc set, he is heard in a huge selection of arias and some duets with distinguished colleagues; most of them were recorded separately, and a few are excerpted from complete opera recordings--unfortunately not very skillfully, stopping abruptly in mid-phrase if not mid-note. No matter; the miraculous thing is that Björling, whether singing an entire role or a single aria, can instantly create a character and bring him to vibrant life. He sings everything in the original keys--his high B-flats, B's, and C's are thrilling--and almost everything in the original language, including a few songs by Schubert, Strauss, and Grieg. Recorded live in recital, they are delightful--only one is too operatic. Among his partners, soprano Zinka Milanov and baritone Robert Merrill stand out. This recording presents an incomparable artist at his incomparable best. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Excellent older music.......2007-04-05
He is obviously one of the best of his time and puts to shame some of the newer singers. You get alot for your money on this CD too. I highly recommend it for a Sunday morning to enjoy your coffee, newspaper, and scones :}
A Golden Voice!.......2006-07-31
In opera circles everyone knows about Jussi Bjorling. But, I am writing this for the many people who never heard of him. He died in 1960 at the age of 49 so he hasn't been around for 46 years. Thus, the younger generation have only heard of Pavarotti, Domingo, Correras and some newer fellows. Believe me, the sweet, honeyed, golden voice of Bjorling will impress you. His voice..his "instrument".....is...is....what can I say, it's "beautiful". If you haven't heard him before you have an enormous treat ahead of you! If you love the beautiful sound of a "trained" voice, you'll love this guy! Enjoy!
(Some guy below is comparing Bjorling to DeStefano and Corelli and some others and was critical of Bjorling. The guy who wrote that must be suffering from hearing loss! ALL the tenors he mentioned are/were great artists. DON'T BELIEVE HIM...BELIEVE ME! :o) Email:boland7214@aol.
Heaven.......2004-12-13
I used to buy two separate CDs for people I was introducing to Bjoerling - the Pearl Fishers one, and the one with the Nessun dorma on it... So I was delighted when this 2 CD set came out.
To me, NO other tenor I've ever heard matches Bjoerling. His voice is one of the few that reduce me to tears just trying to EXPLAIN it to people. I've loved classical music since childhood but was never able to get into opera until I heard Jussi ... all the tenors alive today - feh, sorry, but to me they just sound like guys taking deep breaths and singing loud, not like "the voice of God" ...
The Ultimate Tenor Anthology.......2003-10-26
For anyone who has for some reason fallen in love with some other tenor voice, the discovery of Jussi Bjoerlings voice may be heartbreaking. This is not a tenor who can only sing superbly in lyric opera or only in dramatic opera, or only in song and lieder. This singer can sing whatever he wants and more; he does it equally brilliant whatever to the vocal demands may be. That, more than anything makes him absolutely unique in the record history.
In the opening selection of this compilation; "Celeste Aida", this essentially lyric voice demonstrates for every heroic and dramatic tenor how to sing dramatic opera. It is a sheer singing lesson. In the strenuous recitative, he does not shout or use other non-musical effects, but shows that true dramatic expression is characterized by tonal intensiy and not by volume, although he had plenty enough of that. The beautiful and incredibly free flow of lyric tones in the Pearlfishers duet, the Faust cavatina and in the gorgeous "Che gelida manina" is absolutely exemplary. Yet, who could replicate the beauty of those effortless high C`s? I cannot think of anyone.
The only thing that could better this and give the set 5 stars in the book, is a compilation of the same selections, transferred from the original tapes and not excessively remastered as on this occasion. The sound is at times overly bright and the voice sounds thin and even sharp. But the singing is so far unmatched.
The biggest hype I've ever seen or heard.......2003-07-27
This tenor is a tiny patch if compare to Corelli or Del Monaco, not to even mention Pavarotti. His high notes are strain to the max and he sounds like he's singing in half falsetto.
A total disappointment. I recommend Gigli and Del Monaco instead.

This is a question .......2006-08-03
I was directed to this CD from an online link is track #8 conducted by Aruther Fiedler????
What a thrill to find this!.......2004-05-27
I have looked and looked for "The Polonaise" from "Eugene Onegin" and began to think I never would find it. It is one of my very favorites. However, sitting through that entire opera for just this one piece was a bit tiring. Although, it really was worth it to be transported for just a few minutes. I don't remember where I even got this CD, but played it and was estatic to hear "The Polonaise"! Beautiful piece, beautifully done. This is not to say that the rest of the CD is not 5 star, too. It is!
I hope you enjoy this CD as much as I.
Pretty good album........1999-08-03
I think that these are my favorite Tchaikovsky songs, but there are much better classical albums out there, so buy others.

Wonderful for Little Ballerinas.......2007-01-10
I purchased this CD for my six year old grandaughter who was dancing in the local production of The Nutcracker for the second year, and she loved it. It contains the best pieces of the three ballets without being so long as to cause little listeners to lose interest, and is a good quality production as well. We enjoyed it throughout the Christmas season.
Supurb!.......2006-08-22
Crisp and lively! This CD offered all my favorites from the Nutcracker Suite, Swan Lake along with Sleeping Beauty. What more could I ask? Sound quality is supurb!
The nutcracker is brilliant........1998-12-07
This is the best composed music I've heard in my life. It is relaxing and enchanting. Everyone should listen to it, at least once in their lives.

Customer Reviews:
Good sound, not so good music on 1812........2007-07-05
I compared this 1812 to my old Philadelphia/Ormandy CD from Sony Essential Classics. Ormandy's opening with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (using organ where Kunzel uses the woodwinds) is much more dramatic and musical then Kunzel's rushed opening, and the Mormons sing the pants off the Kiev choir. It may be unfair to compare the Cincinnati Pops with the Philadelphians who play really wonderfully on this. Kunzel's canons out-blow Ormandy's, but he brings in the Vally Forge Military Academy Band at the end to make up for weaker canon. Ormandy wins this battle!
1812 overture / Cincinnati Pops.......2007-01-18
One of the finest renditions of one of my favorite musical pieces. It brings tears to your eyes.
Nice music.......2007-01-07
This is not the type of music I normally listen to, but on my SACD system it does sound nice. Worth the money. This would get 5 stars from me if I were a fan of classical music. If this is not your genre either, and want something that sounds nice, I recommend you go with Beck's Sea Change SACD over this.
Not sure why people are complaining about the cannons. If you have a good system made for high end audio, with nice speakers for music all around, you should be fine. If your speakers were made for watching movies, then you may have a problem. I have not listened to this on a regular cd player yet, but I could see how a regular cd with basic speakers may have a problem as well.
My system:
Dennon 2910 player
Yamaha RX-V2400 receiver
JBL Northridge speakers (the largest ones in the series: i.e. double 10" fronts, 12" sub, surround speakers that are serious shelf speakers, etc).
Sounding quite nice.......2006-04-30
I tried different styles of play with the direct streaming recording of this SACD. What I discovered is that this format (DSD) allowed all 7 speakers to produce a plesant sound. Using the THX Music mode of my reciever.
Other SACD's that I have played on it allowed only the SACD EX (expanded) mode to work. The thundering of the cannons wasn't all that loud. I have listened to a few versions of 1812, this isn't the best that I have heard. With the special recording method, it did sound the most pleasing though.

One of the best SACDs I own!.......2005-03-03
I was a little worried about this SACD, because I'd read user reviews that said the canons were mixed far too loud, forcing you to either miss the orchestra or else bleed from the ears when the canons go off during the finale. Nothing could be further from the truth on my system. The orchestra is at a suitable level, and is wonderfully detailed. I own quite a few SACDs, but I was still suprised by the quality of this recording, especially of the 1812 Overture itself. If you close your eyes it feels like you are there live!
For reference, I have a very good reciever and a Klipsch RF-35 based surround system; I don't know how this sounds on other setups, but it is fantastic on mine.

Amazon.com essential recording
Levine has assembled a cast strong in both singing and acting, although Mirella Freni is a bit mature for the teenage Tatiana and there are no Russians in the leading roles. The conducting quite properly emphasizes the psychological and emotional extremes in a story deeply imbued with the Byronic attitudes and poses of literary Romanticism. The orchestra, in James Levine's (and Tchaikovsky's) hands becomes a character in this drama as vital as any of the singers, and Pushkin's poem-novel, the source of the opera, can be felt with unusual clarity underlying this interpretation. --Joe McLellan
Customer Reviews:
A Distinguished Cast for EUGENE ONEGIN.......2007-02-27
This excellently produced 1987 DG recording, conducted by James Levine with an energetic chorus and orchestra, can be recommended without hesitation to the newcomer to Tchaikovsky's Romantic EUGENE ONEGIN. The cast's principals were all leading exponents onstage of their roles in the opera; as heard here they have many virtues, few faults, and make a fine company.
Mirella Freni, fifty-three years old in 1987, is not always ideally steady. However, her voice had retained its radiance, and this quality goes a long way toward suggesting Tatyana's youth, innocence, and sensitivity. In the last act, Freni's mature artistry translates into Tatyana's newfound poise and self-assurance as the wife of Prince Gremin. Thomas Allen lives up to his reputation for making difficult characters, like Eugene Onegin, interesting and ultimately sympathetic; and though his Onegin can be cold indeed - just listen to his interaction with Freni's Tatyana in Act I, scene three (end of CD #1) -- the voice itself is always warm, beautifully balanced, and easy on the ear. (Allen's Count Almaviva in the classic Solti LE NOZZE DI FIGARO is very like this Onegin: a cold characterization warmly sung.) Neil Schicoff, with his "nervy" but attractive tenor, embodies the hypersensitive Lensky. Though it is possible to imagine a more elegant or a more quietly melancholic interpretation of the poet, Schicoff's portrayal here is superb; he has made the role his own. This was an early recording for Anne Sofie von Otter. Her singing as Olga is a joy, her high mezzo completely devoid of the lugubriousness unsuitable for, yet too often heard in, the role of Tatyana's flighty sister. Paata Burchulaadze is an above-average Gremin with a full, resonant low F-sharp at the end of his aria. The wonderful French character tenor Michel Senechal sings Monsieur Triquet's couplets with charm and sweet tone. James Levine conducts a "big," weighty performance. While this approach is arguably inappropriate for such a delicate work as EUGENE ONEGIN, the results are undeniably exciting and emotional - reflecting, perhaps, Tchaikovsky's own suffering at the time of the opera's composition (see Mark Swed's review in THE METROPOLITAN OPERA GUIDE TO RECORDED OPERA for more on Levine's approach).
Which Onegin to buy, Levine or Bychkov?.......2007-02-03
When The Gramophone gave a lukewarm review to Levine's 1989 Eugene Onegin and a rave to the 1993 set under Semyon Bychkov, I felt a healthy skepticism. How a magazine solely devoted to classical listening could hire writers with such lamentably bad ears is beyond me. So I decided to investigate for myself. Without a doubt these are the two leading versions of Tchaikovsky's most famous opera. Ironically, considering that he has sniffed out many rarely heard Russian operas, Valery Gergiev wasn't given the chance to record the second most famous Russian opera, after Boris Godunov; Philips gave the nod to Bychkov instead.
Levine/ Dresden: This is a non-Russian reading with a stellar international cast (British, Italian, American), replicating a great night at the Met in the late Eighties, only transferred to Dresden. The advantages of having world-class musicians at every level, from Levine's truly exceptional conducting to the Staatskapelle's gorgeous orchestral sound and the casting of Freni, Allen, and Shicoff, are unmatched by any rivals. And every singer is in fine voice. How anyone could rate this set below the highest is a mystery to me. Even the German chorus sounds totally Slavic, but then, it helps that 999 out of a thousand Western listeners don't know a syllable of Russian (beyond nyet and da). Our willingness to hear unidomatic singers is one of the reasons Onegin has been so often performaed in the West without benefit of Slavic voices.
What really matters is dramatic conviction, and here again the Levine set is unequalled outside Russia. Tchaikovsky's score is musically static compared to Verdi, with many intimate scenes and inward emotions. Melodies are spun out slowly over long stretches. Therefore, it's vital to have a conductor and singers who bring inner vibrancy to every bar. Levine, Freni, Shicoff, and Allen do just that. I couldn't tear myself away, which wasn't the case listening to the Bychkov set. The one minus cited by many critics has to do with Freni's age, but she's in great voice and frankly sounds as young as anyone could wish without being girlish. Her counterpart on the Bychkov set, Nuccia Focile, sounds fresher but is nowhere near the artist that Freni is. In sum, this is one of Levine's real (and surprising) triumphs on disc.
Bychkov/ Paris -- I am an admirer of Semyon Bychkov, particularly in his early days when he shot to prominence conducting the Berlin Phil. and, as here, the Orchestre de Paris, but his skillful management of the score is underpowereed and at times slack compared to Levine. The melodic line is allowed to languish, however prettily, too often. His orchestra is quite good--it's not recorded in the best sound by Philips--yet it lacks the special finesse and glow of the Dresden group.
The main reason that critics swooned over this set comes down to one name: Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Onegin is his signature role, as Boris Godunov was for Christoff, and he makes the most of it. With his matinee-idol looks, DH is a smash onstage; moreover, he bothers to act with his voice here (as he rarely does in Verdi, Mozart, or sometimes in Russian roles). With his perfeclty even vocal production and superb dramatic inflections, no better, more alluring hero can be imagined.
But the superiority of the singing stops there. Focile gives us a fine Tatyana, but her voice is rather edgy, especially as recorded by Philips. Neil Shicoff repeats his excellent Lensky (another signature role) from the Levine set, but he's notably less fresh and ardent. In fact, Shicoff provides a touchstone for comparison. Listen to any passage where he appears, and see if Levine doesn't bring out much the best in him compared to Bychkov.
Much more could be said about both these esteemed sets, yet this is one case where the dark horse wins the race. I plump for the Levine recording on all counts except Hvorostovsky. He has countless fans, and his Onegin proves that he deserves them. For overall musical pleasure, however, the Philips recording comes in second.
A Beautiful And Exciting Eugene.......2006-02-03
This studio recording made in the early to mid 90's is a stunning account of Tchaikovsky's popular opera Eugene Onegin, despite several critics' comments regarding how this is not the right way to sing Onegin. The beauty of this recording lies in the marriage of both dramatic and beautiful singing. The men, in particular, are executing marvelous arias and dramatic scenas. True, the cast is not Russian and therefore may not have command of Russian diction, but this is alright with me, having never considered the Russian/Slavic accent a beautiful one. It's harsh, invective-style and plain ugly. However, in the hands of a few singers, such as these ones, Russian opera can sound wonderful. The only other truly grand Russian opera singer who sung with beauty and dramatic power was Galina Vishnevskaya, and if she sang Tatiana, it's a loss to us that she didn't record it. Mirella Freni as Tatiana is a revelation. Though she doesn't have the assets she had as a young singer- in the heady days of her career she could sing great Susannas, Violettas, Nanettas, Micaelas, Juliettes and even Queen Elisabeth Di Valois in Don Carlo- she sings with enormous passion. She boils over with ardor and yearning for Onegin. Never a more dramatic Tatiana are you ever to find. Freni sang this difficult, demanding role in the final days of her career. She learned to sing Tchaikovsky opera (other than Tatiana she also sang the heroine in Queen of Spades) from none other than the great Russian bass Nicolai Ghiurov, who was her husband prior to his death of cancer a few years ago. Mirella Freni's voice is an example of lyrico-spinto, eventhough in this recording, as in her 1991 Tosca with Domingo and Ramey, she sounds forced and the role evidently took a strain on her. However, the fact she had the guts to take on this role is evidence of her versatility as an artist.
Paschal Allen sings Eugene Onegin. His portrayal is at once that of a tragic, romantic figure. Enough has already been said about how he masterfully hits that sustained high note at the end of the Part Scene/Act. The great Neil Shicoff sings an expressive and dramatic Lensky. This is one of his best roles, and if you want to hear another superb performance of his check out his Eleazar from Halevy's La Juive. Paata Burchuladze was a versatile bass artist who could sing Verdi and, as you can plainly see, Russian opera. What a fine modern recording of Eugene Onegin this is. A more dramatic and beautiful one you are hard-pressed to find.
good.......2002-08-12
A very good performance from all but to me the Solti version is number one. Stuart Burrows as Lensky is melting. His aria makes me cry every time. Nothing compares.
I must admit to buying it to see if I felt the same but it didn't quite hit the note for me. Nevertheless,it is good, but not quite what I wanted to hear.
much better than other non-Russian.......2002-02-24
I must differ to the previous opinion. Russian of the main singers is bearable enough, especially comparing to the Solti interpretation that sounds really strange. I mean pretty strange conducting, strange choose for the singers, and dreadful, unprofessionally sounding Russian. I can point out just two strong points of that interpretation, which are Giaurov as Gremin and thorough booklet. Otherwise Levine's CD is fine. Probably, Freni is the best Tatiana recorded ever, Shikoff is fabulous (just compare with Burrows!), Levine conducts agreeably, and the record is beautifully scaled. Anyway, I'd prefer entirely Russian interpretation. I am sorry about that.

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.
