Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Gloriae Dei Cantores, critically acclaimed for their interpretations of American music, present an exciting collaboration with Grammy Award-winner Mark O'Connor. Featured on this recording is a 15-minute commissioned work by O'Connor, "Let Us Move," with violin obligato. Also featured are arrangements of beloved hymns and folk songs from Appalachia and the South. Exploding with energy and excitement, this must-have album presents a new American classical style of music, inspired by the rich American folk tradition. "Nothing could have prepared me for the day I first heard this music sung back to me. . . . Gloriae Dei Cantores' voices sounded like angels descending from Heaven, delivering and rendering my music in a way that seemed to shake the rafters and elevate the spirit."
Mark O'Connor, February 2001

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:
A good choice.......2005-06-16
I did not know all the tunes when I have ordered this CD and after listening, there are still some tunes that I do not know. However, the quality of recording is excellent, the choice of tunes is interesting and the orchestration is good. So, if you know these tunes and if you like them, you may buy this CD; it is not a bad one. It is not the one that I prefer because it is a question of personal choice but it is at least a good one.

Perfect.......2004-08-13
This entire series of discs is really great...centered around a theme ("Book Lovers," "Lazy Afternoons," "When You're Alone,")each CD is full of beautifully done instrumentals that, interestingly enough, really do catch the spirit of the title. I particularly like this one--"for Book Lovers"--and read with it playing in the background. Could you find "better" performances or recordings of the selections? Sure. But for the convenience, quality, seclections and price, why should you? These are a terrific value, and a great way to start a classical music collection. Enjoy.

Mark O'Connor, February 2001

american sound at its best.......2002-04-25
I found the new piece written by Mark O'Connor to be a wonderful sound that stirred the American Pride in me. I also found the pieces arranged by Alice Parker to be sung with excitement and accuracy- qualities lacking in most choral groups today
I highly recommend this recording.

Dissipointing.......2005-06-12
Aaron Copland's writing here is spectacular, american in every sense and classic. The performances, are so-so. I could be wrong, but the other performance I have heard of Appalachian Spring conducted by Copeland Himself, is much much better. This is to quiet, to background. The Clarinet Concerto, who have been nice to hear from Jimmy Hamilton (Duke Ellington's Clarinet player). Im sure Laura Arden is a great clarinet player, she certainly has skill, but it just dosent fit. Quiet City is alright, a little to quiet, but its supposed to be.
Four-and-a-half stars, really.......2002-12-13
Nashville is one of those American cities, like LA, that has a deeper than expected pool of really fine instrumental musicians, in their case because of the country music industry there. And the Nashville Symphony, and now the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, have made some fine recordings for the ever-resourceful talent scouts at Naxos. Of course, Naxos USA is based in Tennessee, too, so maybe there's some connection there. All of which is to say, this is a fine recording.
There are umpty-ump recordings of Copland's 'Appalachian Spring', in various of its instrumental guises. This is the familiar suite fashioned by Copland and premièred by the New York Philharmonic in 1945, after the piece had been such a hit the year before with Martha Graham's dance company in a version for thirteen instruments. This performance has much to recommend it--rhythmic verve, dead-on intonation, respect for the folk-tinged nostalgia of the piece. It doesn't eclipse recordings by Copland himself or Bernstein, say, but it can certain hold its head up.
The rarely heard 'Three Latin American Sketches', which couples 'Estribillo', the last orchestral piece Copland wrote (1972), with two pieces written in the 1950s, are given decent performances. One keeps expecting something comparable to 'El Salon Mexico' but, of course, that doesn't happen. The pieces are not from Copland's top drawer, but certainly deserve to be heard.
The Clarinet Concerto, played here by Laura Arden, always startles with its wickedly difficult cadenza which links the concerto's two jazzy movements, and Arden really delights with that and the down and dirty gliss that ends the piece. This one's a keeper.
The only slightly less than terrific performance on the disc is 'Quiet City', and that's not the fault of the English horn and trumpet soloists; no, they do a fine job. This piece, which is mostly quiet, mostly pensive, needs to have a strong backbone; this performance is too soft-edged. One does not get the sense of a great city in the hour just before dawn, as Copland intended, but perhaps more middle-of-the-night Peoria (no offense, Peorians!). There's not enough angst here, not enough loneliness.
The sound, as one expects from Naxos, is good. There are good program notes by Viola Ruth.

good program, performances are mixed.......2006-01-27
Although it does use the original instrumentation (flute, clarinet, bassoon, piano, and strings), this is not the original Appalachian Spring -- it is the chamber version of the *suite* (as indicated in the title). The suite cuts about 10 minutes of good material from the original, resulting in a 'lite' edition that is not necessarily an improvement. If the 'simple gifts' section, particularly its 'climax', strikes you as a bit overblown, you will prefer the full work, which puts this section in a different context. (There are chamber and orchestral versions of both the suite and the full ballet. Most recorded performances are the orchestral suite. If you are interested in the full chamber version I recommend the Copland-conducted performance on Sony, for the full orchestral version Tilson-Thomas on RCA.)
The selection of pieces here gives a pretty good cross section of Copland's work, with the Latin American sketches representing his lighter side and parts of the Short Symphony hinting at the sound of his more 'difficult' works, with the other two falling somewhere between. The Symphony famously has some tricky rhythms in parts, but is not an off-puttingly complex piece by any means. It would be inaccurate to describe it as 'twelve-tonish' -- for what it's worth, the melodies and harmonies (including the dissonances) are largely diatonic. It is similar to neoclassical Stravinsky, but less emotionally oblique. Copland considered it to be one of his best works. The score used here is an arrangement for chamber orchestra by Dennis Russell Davies, which doesn't sound very different from the original. There is also the Sextet, Copland's own chamber arrangement of the piece. (If you are interested in the original orchestral version I recommend Tilson-Thomas on RCA.)
As for the performances, the OCO is a very 'professional' sounding group, which implies negatives as well as positives. As far as technical execution, they are very capable -- where I find them sometimes lacking is in the expressivity department, due to glib phrasing and (usually rushed) glossing over of the more complicated rhythms. I think they are generally more successful in lighter fare, such as the Latin American sketches (the best performance here), where the musicians don't have to internalize the music so much. I don't know if this has something to do with the fact that the group has no full-time director, but I suspect it might. This shortage of involvement doesn't completely cripple Copland's music, which is already warmly communicative, but the group's Stravinsky, for example, is quite dry and, critically, lacking in rhythmic precision.
Overall, if you are interested in hearing these pieces in a chamber setting or are a fan of the OCO, this is worth getting, but it's not an essential Copland recording (otherwise it would probably still be in print).
The _original_ Appalachian Spring.......2005-03-31
Before it was a full-blown orchestral production, Appalachian Spring was written for a small ballet orchestra, 13-piece or so. This recording preserves that original arrangement (with a few additional strings), resulting in a very clean, sharp sound. It's the first version of the piece I ever heard, and I find it preferable to the later orchestral version. This recording is hard to find these days, but worth it just for this great version of Appalachian Spring.
The "Short Symphony" I don't care for much; it's a bit too twelve-tonish, seeming to sound dissonant just for the sake of sounding dissonant. "Quiet City" and the Latin American sketches, though, are a good complement to the main piece.

Hugh Wolff's well-recorded disc offers a splendid account of the complete Appalachian Spring ballet in its original chamber scoring--perhaps even lovelier than the more familiar arrangement for full orchestra. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Breathtakingly beautiful!.......1999-09-07
These performances of familiar and unfamiliar Copland works were recorded as a memorial to the composer by Hugh Wolff shortly after Copland's death. "Appalachian Spring" appears here in its complete score (about 7 minutes longer than the familiar suite) and, more importantly, in its original, intimate scoring. Copland himself was fond of this version, and it's easy to see why -- the clarity and intimacy is breathtaking, while lacking none of the beauty of the full orchestral scoring. If you love Appalachian Spring, you will love it even more after hearing this version. The sonorities of the less familiar works (Music for the Theater; Dance Suite) are astonishing and delightful -- it's a wonder that these works aren't better known. So even if you have a recording of "Appalachian Spring," this CD is worth having for the substantial additional works.
