When Joshua Rifkin introduced his thesis that Bach composed most of his choral works for only one singer per part, he used the Mass in B Minor as his demonstration piece--in part, no doubt, for maximum shock effect. Since then, Rifkin's theory has made the greatest headway with performances of Bach's early cantatas--those he wrote before arriving in Leipzig in 1723. Even Christ lag in Todesbanden and the Actus tragicus, both considered canonic works of the choral literature, have benefited from fine single-voice recordings by groups such as the Taverner Consort and the American Bach Soloists. Now along comes Cantus Cölln and outdoes them all. Konrad Junghänel's soloists make Bach's music speak as well as sing: they don't avoid all those German consonants (even if it means cutting off notes early), so the rhetorical aspect of these cantatas really comes through. It's hard to single out any one singer when all four are so good, but first among equals is Johanna Koslowsky, who can float an ethereal chorale melody and toss off virtuoso runs with equal skill, all in a tone so pure she could almost pass for a boy soprano. The musicians do just as well by the two less-famous cantatas included here: Weinen, Klagen, whose title chorus became the Crucifixus of the B Minor Mass, and the winsome little wedding cantata Der Herr denket an uns. Harmonia Mundi already has one revered specialist in Bach's vocal music on its roster (Philippe Herreweghe), but one would hope they'll allow Cantus Cölln to record more Bach cantatas. Junghänel and his musicians are really good at this. --Matthew Westphal

"Gott!" That's how this disc begins. No overture or instrumental prelude of any kind, just a lusty C-major "Gott!" repeated three times, as trumpets, oboes, and recorders play triumphant arpeggios. Cantata No. 71, Gott ist mein König ("God is my King"), is unusual in other ways, too. It's one of the few cantatas in which Bach left clear indications about which portions of the choruses are to be sung by soloists only and which are to be sung by a small choir. Conductor Masaaki Suzuki has done well, not only with his top-notch choir and period-instrument orchestra, but also with soloists who blend beautifully with each other. The other two compositions included here are more subdued affairs. Cantata No. 131, Aus der Tiefe ("From the depths"), has a good bit of contrast (including a couple of lively choruses) for such a penitential work. Among its many wonderful moments is bass Peter Kooy in duo with the marvelous baroque oboist Marcel Ponseele while soprano Midori Suzuki floats a plaintive chorale melody above them. The gently comforting funeral cantata No. 106, often called the "Actus tragicus," is one of Bach's best-loved works; the key moment at its center, in which a strict fugue for chorus fades away to leave the pure-toned soprano Aki Yanagisawa with an a cappella call for Jesus, is breathtaking. Now, both of these cantatas have long, intricate lines, notably in their final choruses, that work better with soloists only, and they've been recorded that way more than once. But, if you're going to have a choir sing them, you probably couldn't do better than this one. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
the TRUTH of Bach.......2007-01-15
Being an 'Actus tragicus' man deep to my bones, I covetously own ten professional versions (and three college recordings), and along comes this reading by Bach Collegium Japan ensemble under Masaaki Suzuki and blows my entire cache AND me off the map! It's no hyperbole to say that THIS is the truth of Bach. Rarely has any recording humbled me so completely as this amazing ensemble's rendering of Bach's little funeral cantata of humble mein. I listened last night - for three hours - to this astonishing recording and found myself lost for words but went to sleep a grateful man. The cleansing SOUND of this ensemble of musicians is overwhelming. Here is fidelity to composer and score bathed in musicianship so pure that every iota of Bach's genius is subsumed in profound spirituality. Here is the gritty everlasting peace of life and death. No other reading has comparably revealed Bach the man of God in language so plain and profound. From musicianship of this depth arises a life-changing spiritual experience. Using the old-fashioned instrumental framework - two recorders, two viola da gamba and continuo - the opening Sonatina instantly cedes to the spiritual everything that is to come. The singing of countertenor Yoshikazu Mera is so beautiful you have to grow a new heart to hold it. This young master (b. 1971) delivers 'In deine Hande' like a witness of the ages - burning with profound simplicity. Soprano Midori Suzuki sings section II's concluding cry for deliverance - 'Komm, Herr Jesu' - with unearthly sympathy. All the soloists entwine perfectly with one another and with Bach, words cannot convey the experience. Cantata 71 (God is My King) is superbly realised, the trumpets brilliantly recorded and the singing unified beyond belief. Finally, the acoustic of the Shoin Women's University Chapel recording location is a revelation. This remarkable recording surely points the way for every musician looking to find Bach - in the heart of musicianship able to speak the spiritual. I immediately ordered three more Cantata recordings by Bach Collegium Japan. Acquire this Bach with joy in your heart.
Marvelous Soloists and Performance.......1999-12-06
Discovering Suzuki's Bach Cantatas has been a revelation. For twenty years I've avoided buying a complete Cantata series because I found the performances from disc to disc too uneven. I've just heard volume 11 (listed on Amazon) and it is stunning. Volume 2 has the incomparable Japanese counter tenor Yoshikazu Mera. Both soprano soloists (Midori Suzuki and A. Yanagisawa)along with tenor Gerd Tuerk and bass Peter Kooy do marvelous work. Especially moving to me is Cantata 131, (Out of the depths I cry to you, Oh Lord). Cantata 71 is simply jubilent (God is my King). I think Suzuki equals or surpasses Ton Koopman and P. Herreweghe in technical excellence. But what makes his recordings especially great is the way he captures the spirituality of the texts and their music. He seems to understand the music more profoundly than do his European rivals from Koopman to Gardiner.

Sam the Bach nut........2005-07-10
Sam the Bach nut says that the Koopman collection is the best of the sets of all the cantatas.
Erato Now Gone, Let's Begin Again with Koopman's Cantatas.......2005-01-18
Anyone interested in these cantatas has likely discovered that they had been begun under the Erato label in the early 90's and were discontinued after volume 12, disconcerting some. Ton Koopman, unabashed, obtained his own label, continuing the series (which is planned to finish at volume 22), even returning to the early volumes in re-issues under the new Challenge Classics covering. This volume is the first re-issue and parallels the new releases in the series.
A side note for those who want only the sacred cantatas: volumes 4 & 5 are composed entirely of the secular cantatas.
The tempi have been slowed slightly from the original Erato releases, but, have no fear, Koopman knows what he is doing. "Ich hatte viel Bekummernis" alone is worth the money, and Kai Wessel's counter-tenor is a treat throughout. Reformed Protestant theology, the counterpoint of Bach, and the wonder of the Baroque era, all contribute to a series to which the initiate will turn often for pleasure.

Bach- No Humbug!.......2000-11-30
I really didn't know what kind of quality to expect from this CD. I bought it based strictly on the quality of other American Gramaphone music (Mannheim Steamroller to be specific). I was not disappointed in any way! If you're not sure what Bach to get, hesitate no more, this is a wonderful project.
A must get Bach CD.......2000-02-14
There are so many popular works written by Bach, that they could make a multi-disc set (Toccata and Fugue in D minor, "Air On The G String", "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring", Brandenburg Concertos, Orchestral Suites, etc., etc., etc.). There are many individual CDs that have their own collection of Bach's works. Some CDs are budget, some mid-priced, and some full-priced. If you are getting started on Bach (and, quite possibly, other kinds of classical music), you might wonder where to start.
Well, as for a full-priced Bach album, this American Gramaphone CD would be a great place to start. It's one fine collection of only some of his finest works on one CD. John Rutter and the City of London Sinfonia did a fine job of performing these works. The performances are brisk, which is pretty much how these works must've been performed during the Baroque period. By the sound of the orchestra, it must've contained modern instruments (which I mostly perfer over authentic). Although I was kind of dissappointed that the "Air from Suite #3 (a.k.a. 'Air On G String')" was a little too rushed. That's the only complaint I have about this CD. But that would NOT be enough to take a star away from the rating.
I would recomend this album to whoever's into classical music, as well as those who are just getting started (AND wouldn't mind investing in a full-priced CD).

a voice teacher early music fan.......2005-12-21
The 4 cantatas performed on this disc were all composed in 1707-08,when Bach was in the first flush of youth, in his early 20's. He was writing cantatas for every Sunday service and at the same time was organist and choirmaster at a church in Muhlhausen. In Bach's day the 4 soloists would have been members of the small chorus; in this recorded performance the soloists serve, together, as the chorus. In the end, we have to say that Bach wrote his most sublime music for the church; but most important, his writings have a spiritual power, a solid strength and sincerity that cannot be traced to technique, but to the inspiration of pure genius. And the 4 soloists on this disc bring out very clearly his greatness!!!!There are quartets, duets, trios and solos all accompanied expertly by the Purcell Quartet. In addition we have recorders, oboe and bassoon to add to the overall instrumental "color". Some of the high points for me: "In deine Hande.." Michael Chance (countertenor solo);"Den Tod....." Emma Kirkby & Chance duet. It's all great music and a must if you are an Early Music fan!

jatekok transcend being just sketches.imbued with something special........2006-07-09
Kurtag has a very precise sense of what he hears but is often at a loss to find an effective means of notation (the Jatekok pieces with their flimsy notation are a good example)and then has fierce confrontions with players when they don't realise his intentions.
For all this shoddy behaviour, the results aren't without an appeal, somehow transcending (only just)being a mere sketch. Most moving are the Bach transcriptions which are beautifully delivered by the fearsome duo of kurtag with his wife. They emerge seamlessley from the Jatekok.
Uneven but often entertaining piano miniatures.......2004-01-07
This disc, featuring György and Márta Kurtág playing selections from György's collection of pieces for piano (both two- and four-hands), Játékok, was one of the discs that helped to boost Kurtág's once-low profile outside his native Hungary. The fifty minutes of music on this disc contain thirty-four pieces dating from the early 1960s to the late 1990s, four of which are four-handed transcriptions from Bach, the other thirty of which are original Kurtág creations (sometimes arranged for piano from works for other instrumental/vocal combinations).
Of these thirty, ten are four-handed works played by both Kurtágs, while husband and wife share piano duty on the twenty two-handed works. Many of the original works are very short, with eighteen clocking in at under a minute, and half of these under forty seconds. This inevitably means that some--though not all--of the very short works are distinctly slight, though this is compensated for by the inclusion of more substantial achievements such as Präludium und Choral, Hommage à Christian Wolff, Glocken and Aus der Ferne. Stylistically, these compositions range widely and eclectically: Webernian-sounding miniatures rub shoulders with constructivist atonality, bizarre flights of whimsy and even evocations of folk music and long-dead composers. Nonetheless, the works here that leave me with the strongest impression are the four Bach transcriptions, whose contrapuntal clarity, fidelity to the original and sheer joy remind me of Busoni.
This doesn't strike me as an essential Kurtág disc, at least in part because I tend to find the Játékok pieces work best in smaller doses than 50 minutes. In addition, some of then are probably more fun to play than to listen to. Nonetheless, fans of the composer will want to hear this selection--particularly in such authoritative performances--but newcomers would do better with the Keller Quartet's stunning string quartet collection (also on ECM).
Jewel-like modernist piano music.......2002-12-11
This is one of my favorite piano music recordings. Kurtag's piano pieces, each dedicated to a friend or hero, are like miniature musical portraits composed by a master artist. They are tiny, intricate, and gestural. His music tends toward the aphoristic, saying a lot with very few notes. Some pieces are less than a minute long. And yet they have the feel of the eternal about them. The sound is beautiful.
Extraordinary music superbly played.......2002-03-04
This is one of the finest CDs of contemporary piano music I have ever heard. The music is spare, fragmented, and frequently "empty" -- not empty of content, but empty in the way the Grand Canyon is empty. Not knowing very much about Zen I will still venture to say that Kurtag's music has Zen-like qualities of intense concentration, absence of ornamentation for it own sake, quietude, rigorousness, micro- and macro-scopic examination of its subject, seriousness offset with moments of whimsy, and even, though how I know this I don't know, morality. Not prudery, but real morality. This is music that grapples, as much as music ever can, with the Big Problems. Death, love, loyalty and rememberance are frequent themes. There is a deeply religious, almost monastic, quality to much of the music. It is therefore perfectly fitting that the recording is held up by four columns -- four transcriptions of Bach chorales, at least two of which are among the finest transcriptions of these much transcribed works as I have ever heard (easily in a class with Busoni, Kempff and Hess). For Bach lovers alone this is a great recording to have. Ditto for lovers of contemporary music. For Bach lovers who also love contemporary music, this is an essential recording -- not to be missed. Outstanding in every respect.

Life goes beyond death itself.......2006-11-16
To evoke death, the fear we may feel in front of death, and yet the certainty death is a new beginning and not an end because it is Christ's death we are living through our own death, the BWV4 Cantata "Christ lay in the bonds of death" creates the depth of this double experience by systematically contrasting, verse after verse, one voice against the others, one voice against one other, and one voice against one instrument or all of them. Bach of course uses the form of the fugue to make each highlighted element run after the background element or elements in a never-ending and never-slowing-down chase. That is Bach's way to both celebrate and mock death, so much so that the cantata turns into a love song to death, a feast or a festival dedicated to death, the master of ceremony of life itself, the maitre d' of our souls. This final metaphor of Christ as a meal to feed our hungry souls is both cannibalistic and ambivalent between the nourishing mother and the castigating father, the two things you need to go along the way: good food and a forceful loving incitation. This is the most typical element of Bach's art: associating antagonistic elements and making them partners beyond their contradiction. The pipes opening the BWV106 Cantata "Actus Tragicus" or "God's time is the very best time" create a light and yet deep solemn background in which the voices can strut and take us on a rather contrasted dance that splices together the slow enjoyment of God's time, of our time when filled with God, and the more dynamic dance to celebrate that joy. And in this perspective death becomes the main lesson the teacher God can teach us to train us into wisdom and intelligence. Death then becomes a multifarious vocal experience and expression of life when it is guided in an orderly way by the wise vision of an end that balances our whole life into the new beginning this life of ours entitles us to have, or even maybe claim. And Paradise becomes a ladder of light, and singing angels, that we will forever climb without any effort, any tiredness, and in the full enjoyment of an enterprise turned pleasure, bliss. The bliss that resounds behind and within the effort that led us to this divine heaven of the mind in real life, or of the soul in death. The small BWV196 Cantata "The Lord Careth for Us" is a short moment of certitude and conviction that God is on our side, though there is a dramatic and tragic note in the aria since God is on the side of those who fear him. Satiety in both the support from God and our fear of God. The final BWV12 Cantata "Weeping, Lamenting, Worrying, Fearing" opens with a lamenting yet serene trumpet that sounds like enjoying its lamentation that crosses centuries and continents into the universal beauty of the certitude of a solace beyond and through our never ending lamenting celebration of God in the bread of tears that Jesus willed to us along with his blood. The whole cantata, words, music, voices, is the total and permanent alliance of all antagons of life and death, mind and soul. And I guess we all know the aria "Kreuz und Kronen sind verbunden", "Cross and Crown are bound together", and the so clearly triumphant and luminous trumpet that a nearly inaudible lengthening of a note or a silence turns into an ecstatic contemplation of the miracle of death and life. Quite a performance for the Cantus Cölln that renders Bach's music in his best attire, that of the certitude that God's beauty can only lie in the union of antagons and opposites. This conception goes as far as the deepest medieval centuries and the fathers of the Church, of Christianity, Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Below par for Cantus Colln.......2005-09-20
I really love Cantus Colln and their work, especially there second Rosenmuller cd. In my book, there is one black mark against this album, and that is the tempo. I just feel all of it is so rushed and inarticulate. It just sounded sloppy after listening to Herreweghe's version of Weinen, Klangen... and Morimer(Hilliard Ensemble). I must say that I universally prefer Cantus Colln's vocal qualities to almost any of Herreweghe's troop. Though I was disappointed at the lack of polish, most people can find something they like on this cd.
Elegant performances, with some reservations.......2004-04-13
In the one-singer-per-part wrangle I am currently neutral (you'll have to pry the Richter St. John Passion from my cold, dead fingers), but I appreciate the clarity of texture offered by the approach, and Cantus Coelln is nothing if not clear in these performances. The singers are top-notch and blend perfectly in ensemble; the instrumentalists are likewise excellent. Like Matthew Westphal, I must also single out Johanna Koslowsky; she is absolutely heart-rending in the cadenza at the end of "Es ist der alte Bund" in BWV 106.
My reservations are principally with the performance of BWV 4, and are twofold. First is the hypothetical "reconstruction" of the last movement; while, as the liner notes suggest, the chorale in the Leipzig revision is of a later style than the rest of the cantata, the music of the first movement doesn't fit the words of the final stanza of the chorale so well. The second is the tempo of both the first and last movements; while the ensemble can sustain it, the music is sufficiently intricate that I'd like to hear it more slowly.
Still, the beauty of Cantus Coelln's sound and their consummate skill make this a wonderful recording; I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if that were an option in the review form.
Inspired Bach.......2003-05-28
I must have fifty CDs of Bach's Canatas including all the great conductors and bands and this is my very very favourite. Try their Telemann Trauer-Actus too: this is just as sublime.

His Conducting, Especially for his Day as Well Remains Remarkably Animated and Fluent Yet Always Respectful of Bach's Underlying Powerful Architectural Components. These Recordings Set the Standard and for Many Today Remain the Benchmark Performances by which all New Ones Continue to Be Judged.
Customer Reviews:
Bach in the Bach Tradition.......2006-12-16
I believe I owe it to the period performance movement for making me feel like I am committing a sin when I don't listen to Gardiner's or Hogwood's Bach (or Handel, or any Baroque composer for that matter). If, say, I put in Shaw's recording of the B minor mass, or most certainly Klemperer's recording of the St. Mathew passion, I feel that I should somehow be ashamed for what I am doing. There may be some type of Freudian truth buried deep within my being ashamed; however, there has always been an exception to my modern instrument guilts. This is, of course, the Bach recordings of Karl Richter; and more specifically, Richter's immortal survey of the sacred cantatas (well, 75 of them anyway). I received this set as a gift when I graduated from college, and I have been constantly listening since. The music of Bach has meant more to me than any other composer, and the Richter recordings show Bach's true genius at full speed ahead.
Don't get me wrong, I love Gardiner's recordings of the B-minor mass and the St. Matthew Passion; and I do believe that period performance practice reveals a totally new dimension of Bach which can sometimes be overlooked (or, "glossed-over" as the case may be with Klepmerer and others of the like). However, any academic arguments favoring Gardiner over Richter are simply meaningless to me. As Glenn Gould said, its not the type of instruments used that count, but rather, a deep respect for the innate structures of the music; this is what's important, and to accomplish this he believed that we must get rid of the incorrect and outdated notion that by "glossing over" these structures, it somehow improves upon them. I think Gould is absolutely correct in saying its respect for the musical structures that counts most; this is the only duty incumbent upon interpreters of Baroque music (and especially Bach). With this in mind, how can Richter not be the supreme interpreter? Richter gives us Bach in the Bach tradition, and I believe that this is in no small part due to his deep understanding of the same Lutheranism which was in the mind of Bach when he wrote this glorious music. To quote yet another Bach authority, Albert Schweitzer once said "Only he who sinks himself into Bach's emotional world, who lives and thinks with him, [...] can rightly bring Bach's music to the listener". I can think of no one who fits the description quite like Karl Richter.
Well, all arguments aside, the music on these 26 [!] discs are absolutely unsurpassed. I was a bit worried before I received this set, as I knew that in Richter's latter years, he did seem to take various liberties with the scores (more specifically, a slowing of the tempi to the point that it takes us out of the Bach tradition). However, I can safely say that these rumored liberties are nowhere to be found in this set, just pure Bach. I wont dare try to single out notable performances of this massive set (I would be here all night, and I am sure you are becoming tired of reading this anyway). However, one cantata specifically stood out for me during my first few hours with the set (and has since stuck with me); this being BWV 132 (4th Sunday in Advent cantata). This specific cantata, can speak for the entire set in terms of the soloist supremacy above all other Bach cantata recordings (how can you go wrong with Edith Mathis, Anna Reynolds, Peter Schreier, and Theo Adam - with Ursula Buckel and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau elsewhere on the set).
So, finally, this set has exactly what I want in a survey of the cantatas - that is, the genius of J.S. Bach is in the driver's seat, not the conductors. While Gardiner has his moments (and when he does, they are fantastic), and Klemperer did at least get everyone talking about Bach again, I believe Richter's interpretations are the standard by which this music should be played and heard. This set is a landmark in the history of Bach recordings, and although quite expensive, it really should be in the collections of all lovers of music.
- By the way, the set comes in a large slipcover (as shown above by Amazon), with the five original fold-open cases inside; each made of an extremely sturdy, glossy-coated cardboard (as shown above by me [hopefully]). Each disc is in a paper sleeve.
A Time Capsule of Sheer Delight.......2006-12-15
I treasured these recordings as a music student in high school and college in the '70's. Although newer, 'historically correct' recordings were emerging, Richter's musicality, if one will, still attracted me to these Archive recordings. This set is a bargin considering all the music there is to digest. DG's remastering is excellent-the warm analog sound does not suffer what can sometimes be a strident digitized reincarnation. DG's engineers and hardware were always on the cutting edge and these recordings speak to that fact. Say what one will about the oddities of interpertation, there is music in evey bar. Before I began listening, I though that I should prepare myself to forgive Richer for his position in history and look the other way when so called historically inaccurate idioms presented themselves. Yes, they are there, but, the younger listener will be quite astonished to find amazing vitality and sweep of phrase and articulation. Richter's tempi are often suprisingly brisk. The roster of soloists speaks for itself. If you are a musician interested in the genesis of Bach interpertation, this set is a must-have. It is often said that many Bach conductors after Richter took up where he left off. This group of recordings is a testament to his influence. Bravo DG !

There are certain musical monuments to Western civilization that no music lover should be without, at least in part. These include Haydn's symphonies and string quartets, Mozart's piano concertos, Handel's oratorios, Beethoven's string quartets and piano sonatas, Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas, and this, perhaps the biggest monument of all, the Bach sacred cantatas. About 200 of them survive and at least 100 are lost. All of them consist of a series of arias, choruses, and hymns based on sacred texts. Bach had to compose a new one every week for several years, and what makes the music so amazing is not only its quantity, but its sheer quality. There is literally no such thing as "bad" Bach, and this series of performances not only stands as one of the great achievements in the history of recording, it introduced many listeners to the fascinating sound of "authentic instruments." Is this set too much of a good thing? Nah! --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Harnoncourt.......2005-09-24
The big CD collection of Harnoncourt is really to recommend to everybody who is interested in.
It is a wonderful collection, with alle the works of Bach. The whole Box is amazing and every song is fantastic.
It also looks very good wehn you put it into the shelf.
The price is really justified in accord to the number of CD and the quality you get.
As Close as I can Imagine for Authentic Bach.......2005-08-02
If you like your Bach with a heavy Bernstein beat, operatic sopranos, and a huge concert hall sound, or in contrast if you would like to hear Bach as his parishoners did, then these recordings are probably not for you. If you want excellent recordings of the Bach Cantatas using period instruments and boys' voices, to include the occasional flaw, then this discounted, but still pricy set is for you. Here, for the first time, anyone can explore and study the marvels of Bach's Jahrgaenge close to the way it was meant to be heard.
When one considers that Bach had to produce a new cantata each week, and that the performers were local musicians, then one should not expect a perfect performance. When one recalls that the Cantata merely served to reinforce the message of the week according to the church calendar, one should not expect consistently brilliant music. To this, add the fact that the parishioners would have much preferred someone not so old fashioned as Bach to produce their church music. Set up so perfectly for failure, Bach produced some of the most perfect music ever written. Here, bad Bach does not exist.
The use of boys' voices is brilliant. A boy soprano simply does not sound like a woman. A good boy soprano's voice is clear and pure, without the extreme tremolo found in "trained women sopranos." The result is Bach at its purest.
In the mid to late 1950's, preforming Bach on original instruments became an interesting experiment. One group attempting this was the Bach Aria Group, directed by Frank Brief, who performed at the Town Hall in New York City. Over a two year span, Mr. Brief decided that it might be interesting to use a boy's choir instead of a women's choir once each year. He chose the Columbus Boychoir (now called the American Boychoir) of which I was a member for those two occasions. From the critical reviews, the results were very well accepted. Mr. Brief, however, did not go the full way. Instead of using boy soprano soloists, he called on women sopranos such as Beverly Sills. While they gave outstanding performances, it was not "original Bach." But when we asked why didn't he use a boy soprano, Mr. Brief responded that boys' voices could not be sufficiently trained to do Bach justice.
These recordings belie this judgement. Bach did know what he was doing! Highly recommended.
Recording's Greatest Achievement.......2003-04-14
Had this set not been made, then the history of performance practice in the last quarter of the 20th century and beyond would have proceeded very differently. Had this set not been made we would not have many of the current leading figures in the field of early music performance, nearly all of whom were in some way connected with the performance revolution which found its most profound expression in these recordings. For it was during the 14 or so years of this recording project (between 1971 and 1985) that three of the greatest musicians of our time, Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Frans Bruggen forever altered the public's perception of the surviving remnants of Bach's fabled, but rarely heard, "Jahrgaenge", or yearly cycles of church cantatas. For this reason alone, this recording is of profound importance.
Leonhardt, with his consort in Amsterdam, and Harnoncourt, with his Concentus Musicus of Vienna shared the task of recording, with an unmatched team of vocal and instrumental soloists, Bach's roughly 200 surviving "concerti sacri", perhaps a further hundred being lost to us. It was a repertoire more honoured in the history books than experienced in performance. This enterprise changed that state of affairs for ever.
The arguments which are now sometimes made (chiefly by those who are unaware of the extraordinary and revolutionary step which these performances represented), decrying the slightly "raw" (I prefer "vocal") sound of original instruments, or the occasional shakiness of a boy soprano soloist, miss the point of this enterprise, which was to present the music in a new way using Bach's own contemporary resources. Leonhardt and Harnoncourt are the first to insist that using "historical instruments" makes sense because those are simply the best tools for the job. Re-constituting something old has never been their aim. Rather, their idea was to break free of the mindless tradition of performance which took no account of the sounds that Bach actually had in his head when he created his "well-regulated" music for the churches of Saxony. And how does this work in practice? We are left to marvel at an extraordinary level of accomplishment on the part of nearly everyone associated with this project, vocally and instrumentally.
Gustav Leonhardt was well aware (and hopeful) that subsequent generations would likely improve upon aspects of performance which still remained to be sorted out. But, as he said, it was a start. Indeed, when he and Harnoncourt were jointly awarded the Erasmus prize in the Netherlands in 1980, he remarked, with singular modesty and self-awareness: "It was not done well, but it is remarkable that it was done at all". This tells us more about Leonhardt's famous humility, than it does about the standards of these performances, which are usually (with few exceptions) very high indeed. In many instances they will never be surpassed. What we have here is a glimpse of one of music's "golden" ages captured forever on disc. What the listener will marvel at is the extraordinary assuredness of technique and style which is evident in every one of these cantata performances.
The solo vocal contributions of Kurt Equiluz, Max van Egmond, Paul Esswood, Marjanne Kweksilber (BWV 51) are simply without equal, and the current generation of fine Bach singers would be the first to concede their enormous debt to the participants in this great enterprise (their teachers, in many cases). The choirs should also be singled out for attention: Wiener Sangerknaben, Tolzer Knabenchor, Hannover Knabenchor, Choir of Kings College, Cambridge as well as directors Heinz Hennig, Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, Philippe Herreweghe, David Willcocks and Hans Gillesberger. So Europe's finest were all involved in this.
The instrumental soloists: Frans Bruggen, Walter van Hauwe, Kees Boeke, Anner Bylsma, Jurg Schaftlein, Lucy van Dael, Sigiswald, Wieland and Bart Kuijken, Ton Koopman, Bob van Asperen, Lidewij Schiefes, Alice Harnoncourt, Herbert and Herwig Tachezi, Erich Hobarth, Friedemann Immer - to list only the more familiar names - have created a whole world of intelligent and vital performance which has transformed musical thought in our time. No-one in any area of musical performance has remained untouched by the ideas which are so forcefully presented here (even those who'd be the last to admit it). The fundamental idea of treating each period's music as a vital and representative product of its time is one which now extends to music of all periods, signaling the fulfilment of one of Leonhardt's and Harnoncourt's chief aims: to eliminate the artificial distinction between mainstream and "early" music, and, instead, to treat all music with proper respect for its origins and context.
What this recording continues to offer the listener is the experience of hearing the music for the first time, which the technical polish of subsequent surveys cannot quite match. For the young person wishing to learn about music, there is no better starting point than investing in this set, now available at a fraction of its original cost (unfortunately, minus the scores, which were one of the hallmarks of this series in its first incarnation on LP.
It seems pointless to list highlights, but one might start with the following: BWV 1, 6, 8, 11, 13, 19, 23, 29 and so on. The list is endless. Better still, buy the set and begin a life-time's voyage of discovery instead. Bach, Leonhardt and Harnoncourt: you can't do better than that. Oh, and we should also acknowledge the contribution of the founder recording producer for this project, Wolf Erichson (even though he didn't stay with Teldec to the end of it). Without him, the revolution in informed and intelligent music performance on recordings would never have happened.

This complete set of Bach sacred cantatas is not only a bargain price, but it contains some of the most profound interpretations these pieces ever had. Recorded during the 1970s on period instruments, with some of most prodiguous singers (Equiluz, Esswood) and an outstanding orchestral support, this is the best integral collection of cantatas there is. In order to restore the forgotten sence of baroque music, instrumentation is reduced to a minimum, the continuo is supported with antique instruments such as the basoon, tenors have been thoughtfully selected as NON-operatic. Another reconstructionist aspect was the use of boy choirs, which in later recordings Harnoncourt gave up. Boy choirs are not only authentical, but have the advantage of pitch purity. While in some arias (such as the extraordinary duet "lobe den herren" - BWV 137) this seems an excellent choice, in most it fails in more or less apparent manner.
While Herreweghe's or Gardiner's new interpretations are CERTAINLY better in both orchestral and vocal support, they all are greatly in debt of Harnoncourt/Leonhard, for it's always simple to improve something ALREADY existing instead of breaking new grounds (as this stellar 1970's recording did). Not to be forgotten is the fact newer version bring a sence of lightness which pleases anyone's ears, but it's manytimes inappropriate for the content of the music.
Teldec Set Still Holds Up After 30 Years.......2001-04-11
This set of almost 200 cantatas is, without a doubt, a milestone in recording history, and that alone makes it valuable. There are now at least two other competing sets on the market (Helmuth Rilling's complete set--on modern instruments, alas!--and Ton Koopman's period performance set still in the works), but this one, warts and all, still captivates and draws the listener into the world of Bach's cantatas like no other.
I would argue that no one can really claim to know Bach without knowing both his organ works and his cantatas. After all, this is the music that occupied him for most of his professional life. Most of these cantatas were written as part of his duties at Leipzig, and while in the hands of any lesser composer that might have meant uninspired music cranked out week by week out of necessity, Bach rarely, if ever, had an off day. Each cantata is a little world unto itself, a place you can retreat to for 20 minutes and either reflect on their spiritual message (which, be warned, is sometimes grim indeed), or just lose yourself in the beauty and grace of the melodic lines.
Harnoncourt and Leonhardt choose to keep these performances intimate; this is not the Bach of the concert hall; these are direct, personal expressions that work well in the private space of one's living room. Some of the playing sounds a bit shaky by today's standards--apparently some of the soloists were still discovering how to play period instruments that had not been heard in centuries--and the boy soloists seem to strain at their parts sometimes, especially in the earlier recordings, but that only adds to the charm: I much prefer the uncertain readings to letter-perfect performances offered by others. The performances actually draw the listener's attention away from the playing itself, forcing attention on the music and the text, which is entirely consistent with the nature of these pieces.
For those who don't want to spend the 500+ dollars all at once, Teldec also offers these in six-CD sets at a great budget price. They're worth every penny. My only disappointment is that the CD package doesn't include the scores, as the old Telefunken vinyl sets did. But that's perfectly understandable. This set reminds us why Harnoncourt and Leonhardt were once at the forefront of the period-instrument movement. Let's hope that Teldec keeps these recordings in print for a long, long time.
