Hundreds of compilation recordings have been thrust on the market in recent years on the theory that classical music makes a nice, non-threatening accompaniment to everything from working out to making love. And here we have one compilation promising to make your baby smarter. It's offensive enough that the music featured on these compilations is spliced up so that the most you hear of any work is a single movement; what's really annoying is the poor quality of so many of the featured performances. So it is some consolation that the artists here include such 20th-century legends as the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell and the Budapest String Quartet with Mieczyslaw Horszowski. Of course if these folks were alive, one can imagine their violent objection to this presentation of their work. --Gwendolyn Freed

Build Baby's Brain through Classics Vol 1.......2006-07-25

I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though, and purchased a used set for my Grandson.

Wonderful stimulating music for baby.......2006-06-23

I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start.

Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational stimulation of a young mind is a powerful indicator that the child will be more advanced than the average child.

Music is not just notes played. Music--real music--is everything. Though the music of today will fade, classical music will always be around because it is classic. It fits no matter what era you place it in. There is always a home for it. The artists are timeless just as the beautiful melodies are.

I certainly believe that babies who listen to music will become more familiar with and more easily understand music and instruments. Therefore, they will be quicker of mind. It is just a fact that people who play instruments are usually of higher intelligence.

I don't think that people are destined to be stupid or geniuses. I believe it is a question of environment. I feel I'm a great mother but I haven't done everything I could have been doing to help my son's mind expand as an infant. Now that he is a toddler (18 months) I am teaching him to read and exposing him to the magic of classical music in hopes that it will help mold him and set him apart from the rest.

Minds are trainable. You just have to work at it. This CD compiled of beautiful pieces composed by instrumental geniuses will help you do just that.

The greatest CD!!.......2006-01-17

I received this CD free when I had my first baby and it instantly became my fav cd of all time. I have it on my computer and I had another copy made because I just can not imagine not having it.
And as for the comment that the music has nothing to do with intellingence, you stand alone on that front. Besides, what does it hurt? It's great, soothing music and the babies enjoy it.

I love my child, but the first time I heard this CD, It immediately went from her recorder to mine. I take it practically everywhere I go. I know it's technically "Her" CD, but the selections are so soothing; and you need that type of comfort when stuck in traffic. Honestly, we both enjoy it - and I'm glad someone thought enough to give it as a gift.

I'm not sure what people were expecting when they purchased this. For one thing it tells you exactly what is on the CD. Its not a mystery!! If you buy it on amazon it has listed every title on it so I"m not sure about the people who said they were dissapointed because they already own those titles. Obviously you should glance at the list of titles on this CD if you have a large classical collection already. However if you don't already have a classical collection this is by far excellent .I'll be honest and admit I listen to one of the volumes daily regardless of who is in the room. It's marketed for babies but it is really for anyone. There are SO many classical pieces out there. What they have done is to take the best of the best and also the ones that are known to appeal to babies. For some reason many reviewers thing they just took a random sampling of classical music. In reality they have put together those that appeal most to children. I can tell you that my 1 year old daughter actually dances to these. She really likes them a lot. I consider the whole collection a must have for any household.

CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

This recording is one of several collaborations between conductor Jeffrey Tate and Mitsuko Uchida. In the wake of such legendary interpreters as Clifford Curzon, the Japanese pianist established a reputation in the '80s as one of the finest contemporary Mozarteans for her combination of poetic sensitivity and thoughtful involvement. Uchida plays with characteristic poise and never settles for superficial prettiness of sound (notice, for example, the sense of suspense she brings to the extended trill left hovering shortly into the soloist's entrance in No. 21). I've listened to interpretations from Brendel, Anda, Barenboim, Arrau, and countless others, and I have to say after careful considerations that this version with Uchida and Tate is simply the best. I've noticed that the others all take the 2nd movement too fast, whereas the true beauty is fully revealed when played slower, as it is done here.

Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 20 & 21~ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a brilliant recording and Uchida does such a fine job playing the piano the Mozart himself would have been pleased. Jeffrey Tate also does a bang up job and one most give him praise for his fine work on this recording. Mozart's music is so accomplished and refined that only three other composers can even said to come close to his talent and skill (Beethoven, Bach and Wagner). Mozart has the ability to make his music sound very simple and easy to play but if one examines a score for a piece written by Mozart then one realizes the complexity and nuances that Mozart is able to put into his "simple" sounding music. This recording per se is a stroke of true brilliance and I definitely give it 5 out of 5 stars without any reservations whatsoever.

As the saying goes, "Mozart is Music" and Uchida is Mozart! On this recording, you have two of the most popular Mozart piano concertos in modern performance(that is, played on a very big grand piano--not a fortepiano as they would've been in Mozart's day).

Uchida is crisp and technically correct, though perhaps, as some other reviewers have noted,lacking the passion of other artists' recordings. In the familiar No. 21 ("Elvira Madigan") the cadenzas are Uchidas. In No. 20 the cadenzas are Beethovens--thrilling!

The recording sounds as if it was done in a marble hall of a very grand Chateau, although it was probably done in Waltham Town Hall, London, with some discrete manipulation of the sound. The result is rich and resonant.

I'd personally recommend this for a classical music enthusiast who wanted just one CD of Mozart concertos. But perhaps its even better as a slightly obscure recording to give to a friend who already has a CD by another pianist. It's worth it for the track 3 cadenza alone.

I'm okay with Samantha's comments about the conjuntion betwen orchestra and solo (Uchida). They are in occasions at different intensity or dinamic. Orchestra was a little short. I recommend so the Geza Anda's version of the 21 concerto (sublime).

Concerto recordings that would have pleased Mozart himself.......2001-07-10

Geza Anda is not as familiar a name in the world of classical piano as is a Daniel Barenboim, Artur Rubenstein, Vladimir Ashkenazy, or Vladimir Horowitz; however, this recording of Mozart's 17th, 21st, and 6th concertos for piano show that Anda's ability to interpret Mozart is perhaps equal to that of the aforementioned pianists. The recording is splendid. It doesn't sound cold, despite the fact that it once carried a reputation for lacking emotion. Instead it sounds very classical, as Mozart would have liked it to have been played. Critics are so used to everything being interpreted romantically(even if it's not from the romantic period) that they forget that some pieces are not meant to be as utterly emotional as a work by Chopin or Liszt. Anda brings out the beauty and life from these mozart piano concertos and does quite a good job with the orchestra which he conducts from the piano. I've heard many versions of these concertos, from many stylistically different pianists like Uchida and Argerich. As far as I'm concerned, Anda performs these concertos better than all others, plus his cadenzas are majestic. On top of that, the sound is perfect, sounding as if it were just recently recorded. Plus at midprice, you couldn't ask for more. This CD truly a bargain, and I highly recommend it to anybody looking for a great interpretation of Mozart.

Do yourself a favor, and purchase this over the Serkin (Deutsche Grammophon) version. Anda really shines on the Andante of no. 21. Great Interpretation, Great Performance, and Great Value.

Geza Anda's performance of Mozart's 21st piano concerto is simply gorgeous. All other performances pale before it. His performance of the 17th concerto is also superb and No. 6 makes a welcome filler. No one who loves Mozart should pass up this disc.

Geza Anda's playing is stellar. After hearing his #17 you won't be able to tolerate anyone else's. Geza Anda was to Mozart what Glen Gould was to Bach. His #21 is beautiful, too.

Greatest Collection of Classical I have........2006-12-14

I don't care much for compilation CDs. Usually they are someone else's favorite set of songs from that genre or composer. I usually like the songs, but when I get into listening to the other songs in the genre or by the same composer I find songs that I'm more fond of.

This collection is different.

I try not to be too generous with my top ratings in iTunes for songs, I don't give out a four or five stars to just anything, but many of the songs from this collection make up a good chunk of my top rated songs. I just love this collection.

This is not a good digital recording.......1999-07-27

There is a 'record player' hum in the background when you try to listen to various tracks on these CDs. The compilation is wonderful. The Quality of the recording is very disappointing. The outside of the album cover reads DDD which I thought to mean clean and clear all digital recording. Don't be deceived by the cover.

I am a fan of Mr.Perahia's Mozart Piano Concertos.
This recording is truly exceptional, not only among his Mozart recordings but you may regard this CD the best piano concerto ever recorded!

The sound quality is very good for Sony classical label, which is often edgy and overly bright on revealing audiophile playback system.

I just cannot describe the gallantry and finesse of this remarkable recording.
Music starts where word ends its meaning.

Just listen to Mr.Perahia's playing.

The best piano ensemble performance I have heard in years.......2003-10-07

I happened to catch the first half of this CD, piano concerto no. 21, on public radio just now. I had frozen food sitting in my car beside me, but I couldn't leave because I didn't want to miss a note. I sat there for half an hour, not caring that my groceries for the next few days will probably suffer from freezer burn. Every five minutes, I said to myself, "Who *are* you?"

This is truly an amazing performance. So many pianists, being bound to an instrument that cannot be tuned "on the fly" as it were, don't seem to be aware that it is possible to affect tone on the piano, and so their playing sounds 2-dimensional (I would say "flat," but don't want to be misunderstood). Perahia is one of the only performers I have ever heard who does not suffer from this failing. Each note is perfectly executed, and rings like a bell; his playing so fluid, there are no obvious stops and starts between phrases--it is like listening to a bubbling fountain. His blending is perfection; when his part requires a soloist's flair, the notes sing out beautifully without overwhelming the orchestra; when he is supposed to be "part of the group," i.e., not the soloist, he blends so well that he almost sounds like one of the other instruments. At times I could almost swear he had taken up the flute or oboe for part of the performance.

In lauding Perahia, though, let me not neglect to mention the beautiful sound of the orchestra (Chamber Orchestra of Europe). They, too, seem divinely inspired, never overwhelming, perfectly in tune (which is rather rare these days). They, too, are perfectly blended: not a single note sounding either superfluous or harsh. Truly, you cannot separate the orchestra from the soloist in this performance.

I cannot say enough about this recording; on the basis of hearing the first part of it alone, I am giving it 5 stars.

One of the best versions of one of the best pieces of music.......2001-11-30

Given that the Mozart Concerto K 467 is probably my favorite piece of music I do not judge its interpretations lightly. I find the version to be sublime. Mind you my measuring stick is the Andante which must have a good balance between the bass of the orchestra and the piano melody. I like the Concero No. 27 but I don't think it's in the same league as the no. 21., but it's still a beautiful piece of music. Moreover, Perahia is one of the very best Mozart pianists and this version is excellent.
I recommend Mozart's piano concerto no. 9,15, 17, 25, 20, 24 for thsoe whoc can appreciate the intricate contrast of melancholy and more 'optimistic' melodies that Mozart was so good at weaving. I believ that the piano concertos represent Mozart's best work and provide the most accurate glimpse of the man's character. Gregarious and playful but also introverted, contemplative and melancholy. He was truly human. Yet, somehow, these human qualities inspire the divine. if there is a god he is to be found in this music. I'm not exagerating, Listen.. and I challenge you to find an adequate way to describe the music. Goethe, Stendhal, Chopin and countless others tried, but......

Mozart for royalty.......2000-10-28

What a pleasure it is to listen to Perahia's performance of the 21st Concerto after becoming accustomed to a recording on period instruments. Much as I enjoy period performance in its own way, there is just no substitute for the polish and regal finesse of modern instruments. And who better than Murray Perahia to demonstrate the assets of the modern piano, such as its rich but pure tone and the way it permits even scales? The Chamber Orchestra of Europe sounds full-bodied of tone, too, in this excellent recording but they never overwhelm the soloist and always remain stylishly within scale. The performance of the 27th Concerto is no less understanding and clean-lined although I seem to recall that the Serkin/Szell recording for CBS brought out more of its valedictory qualities. These are not the only recordings you will want of these works but they certainly are centrally recommendable.

I love this CD. Murray Perahia is an acknowledged premiere interpreter of Mozart. A must for Mozart fans.

Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

The brilliant, energetic readings of Robert Casadesus and George Szell set a standard for this repertory that has yet to be surpassed. Dramatic and tightly wound, but never dry or unsmiling, these accounts combine grace and lucidity with an almost operatic lyricism, and remain among the most satisfying and evocative in the catalog. Old Recording but Breathtaking .......2005-04-25

I wish I can find more of Cadasesus's performances of mozart's piano concertos. I own Mozart's piano conertos No. 9 and Nos. 15-27, and this one ranks among my favourite three concertos, the two other favourite concertos are 21 and 22. Here, performer Cadasesus, conductor Szell, and the Orchestra prove that an old recording can be your favourite regardless to the sound quality (this sound quality here is very good in my opinion).

A winner performing.......2004-06-12

Casadesus was one of the most expressive pianists in any age. He had a deep sense of comittment and secret rapport with the composer . This statement works out specially for Mozart , Ravel , Beethoven and Chopin.
Both of these Mozart concerts are superb played filled with inspiration and deep musicality.
But I like to recomend specially an old recording I found in an antiques store in Caracas in 1990 in vynil.
The recording is from 1947, (Columbia Records)in which Casadesus gives THE MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF THE MOZART 21 TH CONCERT.
Imagine the incredible surprise and powerful combination : the aristocratic Charles Munch conducting the New York Philarmonic. I can't explain why the Sony Record hasn't made a transfer on CD of this unforgettable and historical recording.
Meanwhile the 21 of this CD is an extraordinary achievement : but believe me it never reachs the peak of that one. I really hope that this review can be obtained by any important important executive of Sony Records. It would be a wonderful treasure for the mankind!.

Classic Mozart From A Classic Triple Combination.......2003-12-26

Two of Mozart's greatest and most popular piano concertos, Nos. 21 and 24, are combined in this reissue of a classic 1961 recording made by French pianist Robert Casadesus with the Cleveland Orchestra and the legendary if sometimes intemperate conductor George Szell. No. 21 is performed brilliantly by this triple combination; and Casadesus' playing, especially in the concerto's celebrated Andante (the one used in the 1967 Swedish film ELVIRA MADIGAN [hence this concerto's nickname]), is absolutely exquisite.

The 24th concerto in C Minor, the only one besides the 20th (in D Minor) to be in a minor key, is one of Mozart's most turbulent works, and uses the largest number of orchestral players of any of the concertos (even trombones are used here). This, however, daunts neither Casadesus nor Szell, as they and the Cleveland Orchestra power themselves through this stormy and dramatic Mozart masterpiece.

This recording is very strongly recommended for classical music lovers in general, and Mozart lovers in particular.

Almost there..........2001-05-31

At ten bucks this disc is overpriced--I got the whole three-disc set on Sony's Legendary Interpretations series for about $15. So my first advice is if you want these performances look for them used--they should be plentiful and about $5, or look for leftovers of the Legendary Interpretations 3-disc set for about the price of this disc new. As for the performances, they are fine and well-considered, though not quite definitive. There are many great K. 467s out there--one of my favorites is Brendel/Marriner, and it's in far better sound to boot. If you want DDD, DG also has a very fine recording in Pires/Abbado that also features a stunning No. 17 in G Major--that disc is a must-own. As for the C minor, my favorite of Mozart's piano concertos, this is a fairly great performance, almost there, but somehow lacking that last bit of commitment from the soloist. Things aren't aided by the gray sound either. (The remastering is decent, but the sound was never great with these Columbia late-50s recordings to begin with, even allowing for the time: there's just too much hiss to get rid of it all, and the highs are undefined.) Still, there are many lovely moments to savor. Both Szell and Casadesus manage to get the emotional turmoil and majesty across without summoning a Romantic (and inapprpriate) interpretation. The Cleveland Orchestra is in marvelous form, playing with the tautness and yet expressivity Szell always summoned from them. They manage to sound a bit Viennese! If you've never heard either Szell or Mozart's PCs this might be a great place to start, but I'd seriously scour used sources first to get that three-disc Legendary Interpretations set, which also has the 22, 23, 25 and 27 concerti (the 22 and 27 in particular are real standouts) as well as the concerto for two pianos, K. 365 with Gaby Casadesus and Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra (a tad too romantic for my tastes here, but you may disagree). If you can't find that set, then settle for this--with regrets.

Sparkling.......2001-03-13

There are numerous accounts of the famous Elvira Madigan concerto, so called because the second movement is featured in the movie, but this vintage performance is as fine as any, with Casadesus absolutely sparkling at the keyboard and Szell providing crisp, energetic backup. This is one of the sunniest pieces of music ever written, it will brighten up almost any mood, and at bargain price (and including a very fine version of the less well known Concerto No. 24) this is tough to beat.
