4 out of 5 stars Terrific vocal talents for Copland's music.......2002-08-08

This second Copland collection focuses on unique talents of veteran performers.

William Warfield lends his voice and his interpretations of Copland's Old American Songs, and he sings them as they were meant to be, not as classical diletantes felt they should be. You have authenticity here.

Martha Lipton likewise contributes an older world charm and charisma to Copland's settings for Emily Dickenson's words.

Carl Sandberg's resonant reading of his own words is worth the full price of this set.

And then the inimitable Oscar Levant's piano treatment of the orchestral pieces...Levant had a wry touch to his interpretations that gave him a voice all his own.

There's much more here, quite a bit that's less than familiar and therefore increases one's familiarity with Copland.

5 out of 5 stars finally sandburg's lincoln portrait.......2001-08-17

For all those like myself who have waited a decade for "A Lincoln Portrait" with Carl Sandburg's narration on CD, here it is finally! Sandburg's heartfelt reading of Lincoln's words is easily the most inspired and inspiring of the legions of others whose voices have been recorded. The orchestration by Kostelanetz also vastly surpasses others. Compare Henry Fonda's reading for example to see a poorly mixed tape where the narrator's voice is overwhelmed by the orchestra.

4 out of 5 stars Wow! Pretty Good Deal.......2001-03-13

I was surprised to find two CDs of such quality being sold for the price of one. It also contained many hard to find Copland works.

Vitebsk is exciting. Strings do much of the work here. The music is very unique to any other Copland works. Definitely here a sample of this.

The Sextet is very interesting. The combination of strings and piano is a prefect balance along with the clarinet doing much of the harmony. It is the same song though as Copland's 2nd symphony, the 'short' one.

Duo for Flute and Piano is fun and happy. The 1st movement fluctuates quite a bit in the feeling but is a very nice combination. The second movement is slightly morbid but the feeling of happy hi ho is not lost. The 3rd movement is light and bouncy and can be described as typical Copland.

Lincoln Portrait is powerful. Though I don't see how it fits on this CD has a rarity or a chamber work. It is the besy Lincoln P. I've ever heard though.

Old American Songs and Poems of Emily Dickinson are not that good though. It's a vocalist and a piano accompanyingthe vocalist. The vocalists are not that good and I felt needed to feel the music a little more. Thomas Hampson and Dawn Upshaw made a CD with these songs which is much better (the only problem is that that CD only has 8 of the 12 Emily Dickinson Songs).

Billy the Kid was a nice way to finish off. It's just a few excerpts played on solo piano. It was interesting hearing the piece performed this way.

The recording quality is okay sometimes and kinda slipping other times. Then again, these are classic recordings for the most part. The skill though of the orchestra and soloists for the most part is that of a high quality. I definitely recommend this CD to any Copland fans out there trying to discover more about Copland. It's a very nicely put together CD and price worthy too.

Album Description

This uplifting collaboration between veteran African American folksingers Kim and Reggie Harris and their friend Rabbi Jonathan Kligler presents an analogy in song and spoken word between the Jewish exodus from slavery in Egypt in the 13th Century B.C., as retold at the annual Passover Seder meal, and the African American struggle toward equality in America as exemplified by the mid-Sixties Civil Rights Movement.

The CD's rich tapestry of music and history is seamlessly woven from songs in Hebrew from the Passover Haggadah, which chronicles the Jews' Egyptian exodus, with traditional Black Spirituals carrying the ideals of equality and freedom, and songs from the Civil Rights era by Phil Ochs ("What's That I Hear") and Freedom Singers Marshall and Matt Jones (including "In the Mississippi River," about the three Civil Rights workers slain in 1964). There is also a moving poem, "I Have a Million Nightingales," written by a Palestinian poet and set to music by a Jewish cantor, and a new composition by the Harrises - "Freedom Road" - summarizing the unquenchable desire for and journey toward equality and self-determination.

Interspersed are spoken firsthand accounts of watershed events in the modern Civil Rights Movement: musical and humanitarian icon Pete Seeger recounts the evolution of "We Shall Overcome" from a Spiritual to a union rallying cry to a Civil Rights anthem; African American activist Juanita Nelson describes her desegregation battles in Washington and Cincinnati; Rabbi Arthur Waskow tells of his encounters with Fannie Lou Hamer and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the 1964 Democratic National Convention; radio program host Sonny Ochs recalls her late brother Phil's commitment to justice and equality in his songs.

Augmenting Kim and Reggie's exuberant lead vocals and harmonies, Rabbi Kligler's baritone voice, and Reggie's exemplary acoustic guitarwork are keyboardist David Sancious (formerly of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band), bassist Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) and lead guitarist John Platania (Van Morrison, Don McLean), among others. Clarinetist Peter Davis adds a high-spirited Klezmer sound to several tracks.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Work.......2007-05-06

Let My People Go! A Jewish and African American Celebration of Freedom, is an intercultural gem of a an experience. Musically rich and educationally revealing, it blends two traditions while retaining the character of each. I highly recommend this recording.

The rhythms are deeply moving and the melodies beautifully blended. The content brings together two traditions, reflecting the struggles of two peoples while honoring the experiences of both.

5 out of 5 stars We adore this recording.......2006-11-10

Featuring the inspired singing of Reggie Harris and his soulful guests, with spoken interludes by a variety of civil rights activists [including some I've known], this CD can reawaken latent activism or bring solace to the world-weary. The closing track "I won't turn back" does a particularly good job at the latter.

4 out of 5 stars A must listen........2006-03-31

Something that is really unique and different from the Vienna Boys Choir. The arrangements, and accompaniments were excellent. Orginally the works were for a boys choir plus cantor, but was re-arranged for 4 part male choir and cantor. The cantos were excellent, and the Vienna Boys Choir sand at their best. Some of the soprano solos sounded a bit strained, but overall, I took a gamble when I purchased this, and I really enjoy this CD.
