Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Best on the Planet!.......2006-03-24
These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.
Stilted.......2005-12-15
I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.
Walking the trail.......2005-08-07
I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!
Superb concert.......2005-08-02
I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.
Too Studied.......2005-06-22
Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.
The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)
Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

A wonderful anthology.......2007-01-06
This CD is a great place to start if you are interested in old time music. It has an outstanding selection of music from a wide variety of musicians. About the same time I bought this I also got the Smithsonian collection of mountain music. The Smithsonian has more tracks, but overall I'd say the quality of the selections is higher on Mountain Journey.
The multitude of songs resonates with authenticity.......2005-03-02
Playing Time - 64:28 -- At first glance, one has to chuckle at the subtitle of this album, "Stars of Old Time Music." Perhaps with a few more "O, Brother Where Art Thou" and "Cold Mountain" movies, old-time music will have its stars, but I think that's still a long ways off. Twenty-one cuts pulled from Rounder Record releases spanning from 1972-2005 comprise this sampler. The "stars" featured are among the best purveyors of this genre of music - Ola Belle Reed, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Mike Seeger, Doc Watson, Hazel Dickens, Etta Baker, Ginny Hawker, Blue Sky Boys, and others. Similar to another Rounder old-time music sampler "Come to the Mountain: Old-Time Music for Modern Times," this album provides thoughtful liner notes (by Scott Alarik), artist descriptions, and credits for each song.
This old-time mountain music is performed by ordinary folk, with plenty of emotional electricity and without any grandstanding. The vocals particularly impart an intensity that is emotionally-charged. Most tracks feature solo vocals, although it's nice to hear a few cuts with harmonies, such as "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again" (Blue Sky Boys) and "Time Are Not What They Used to Be"( Ginny Hawker and Hazel Dickens). There is even a one-minute song, "The Traveller" featuring sacred harp singers of Georgia and Alabama.
"Cripple Creek" (Mike Seeger & Etta Baker), "Sweet Sunny South" (fiddled by Buddy Thomas), "Midnight on the Water" (Ralph Blizzard and the New Southern Ramblers), "Cruel Willie" (Connie & Babe and the Backwoods Boys) and "Bully of the Town" (guitar by Etta Baker) are the instrumentals among the cuts. Major record label samplers like this one are welcome entries in their catalog of offerings. The multitude of songs resonates with authenticity of our deepest musical traditions.
As producer Ken Irwin once said, "In thinking about how to sell the music, I came up with the idea of `Stars of Old Time Music,' and we all liked it. For those who don't know the old-time music scene, they might actually buy it thinking it was what it sounded like and for those who knew the scene, they'd see it as being tongue in cheek....When I was growing up, we used to collect trading cards, and the matched sets were highly valued. You tried to collect all of those with the same frame or the same look or whatever. With some of the reissues, we have been successful reaching some of the newer fans to the music by putting together compilations of quality music with a similar look to them hoping that people who had enjoyed the earlier ones would take a chance on the newer ones."
The compilations from this record label are a great way to showcase many singularly impressive talents. Find your favorites among the sampled artists, and then buy their complete albums to explore them further. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Music from the heart.......2000-06-25
I've played this CD over and over and still love every minute of it. The music is so varied, so beautiful. I now want to get other albums recorded by Alan Lomax, a genius for recognizing and recording great music. Highly recommended for anyone who loves uncommercial melodies and pure voices.
Recognize the jazz, hiphop, rockabilly, and blues roots.......1999-08-13
Truth be told this disc is not for everyone and I hope that this description will help those interested in hearing the ancestors of many major music forms find a good listen. Alan Lomax made an attempt to record the provincial musical styles in their home and on the participants own terms. What you get are real individuals singing and playing instruments for reasons that no longer exist today; to pass the day at work, to pass along local stories and traditions, to pass the time in jail, to provide expression for small communities, and to praise their gods where the lived and breathed. There was not a dollar to be made for any performance on this disc, and though we pay to hear it now, it had an effect on the musicians and singers. This music is not polished but it is a fantastic cd based on its content and not its production value. You won't hear music like this often in your life.

Misleading but still worth it........2005-10-20
These are by no means white spirituals and hardly any use original styalizations. The Title "Southern White Spirituals" I feel is quite misleading seeing how many of the songs are rather with african american roots that here, just happened to be sung by anglos. The music is none the less wonderful but dont get fooled into thinking the muscicians here were themselves actually better than those who first felt the need to express themselves in such a fashion. I recommend beginning elsewhere but if your just curious then why not, but there are things such as in the Deep River Of Song Series that are more captivating in their utter expression of the human condition here on earth.
Sends chills down to your soul!!!!.......2002-02-05
This is my personal favorite of the Southern Journey series, which is saying something. So much of the music in the Southern tradition (and particularly in the mountain tradition - which is what this music is really a sampling of) is overtly religious and this disc features a broad sampling of various spiritual styles found in the Appalachians. There are shape note hymns, gospel songs, religious ballads, and lined-out hymns in the Old Regular Baptist style.
Mixed with the recordings of the songs are various testimonies of the performers during religious services. These provide insights into how these men and women viewed their religious tradition and its music, as well as the history of their people. These are among the most enjoyable tracks on the recording.
It would be hard to pick the best songs on the album, but my personal favorites are those which have less representation on other commerically available recordings. The lined-out style of hymn singing among the Old Regular Baptists is just chilling, and the samples presented here are fantastic. To my mind, "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah" is worth the price of the CD - raw, unpolished, and lonesome - this is the soul music of the mountains. The shaped-note hymns are almost as moving to me. Interestingly, Lomax includes their first readings during the meetings, while the singers solfege thru the hymn before singing the text. My favorite among these is "Northport" which is fairly well shouted - you cannot doubt the faith of these folks when they sing "Glory! Hallelujah!"
Among the other tracks, one of the most interesting is "The Little Family," an old religious ballad on the family of Lazarus. I had not heard this one before.
For anyone curious about the religious music heritage of the Appalachians, this disc presents an excellent cross-section. Highly recommended.

This stuff really moves me. I think the southern journey series is just about the greatest!

Foot tapping, old timey music.......2004-05-17
I listen to this album often. It feels so fresh and authentic! The first song, "Sheep, Sheep, Don't You know the road" is inspirational: I'll be tapping the rhythms on the computer keyboard or table before the end, and it's a great song to sing with the little sheep in my life. And I have purchased two additional copies of this CD as Christmas presents for friends to share with them the sweetness and warmth of Vera Hall-Ward's "No Room in the Inn" as she tells the story of the birth of Jesus to her Sunday school children. The fiddling music is superb, as well: Neil Morris and the recording engineer briefly speak after "Corn Dodgers" and for that moment time vanishes. You are there. I could go on. Every one of the sixteen cuts has something to recommend it. This is a extraordinary collection for those of us who love American traditional music.
Beautiful.......2000-09-06
In this techno age where the music has about as much soul as a rake lying in the backyard,CD like this one help to remind us of a time before Brittaney and the top boy bands. I highly recommend it and think that anyone who wants real conviction and spirit in their music should give it a thousand listens.

Gently uplifting compositions by a sweet-voiced singer/songwriter.......2006-10-01
Weaving elements of folk, Celtic and world music into a rich, comforting tapestry of sound, vocalist and keyboardist Lydia McCauley offers an intimate musical journey through life, love and spirituality. Her voice is lovely - pure, honest and flushed with the soft warmth of a mother's lullaby--and her soothing vocals are featured in all but one of the songs on this album. There's a warm wistfulness and sense of down-to-earth, motherly love about McCauley's lushly arranged music that is very appealing--great to relax to at the end of a hard day and to remind one of the important things in life. This debut album, with it's varied harmonies and mix of musical influences, is my favorite of her releases. Standout tracks on "Sabbath Day's Journey" include the moving and beautifully mournful "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair," the jaunty "Asissi," the Celtic-like "Buon Giorno, Buena Gente" with its changing tempos, and the contemplative "Brimstone," a song about the natural cycles of life, creativity and hope. In addition to accompanying herself expertly on piano and synthesizer, McCauley fleshes out the sound of her songs with the help of a sizeable number of acoustic instrumentalists: Phil Heaven on bowed strings and doumbek, David J. MacVittie on bouzouki, guitar, sitar and doumbek, Frank Olsen on bass and bass guitar, Larry Knechtel on piano, Paul Englesbert on concertina and penny whistle, Frank Jackson on recorders, Jud Sherwood on drums, and co-producer Kurt Scherer on bells and (?) Garden Weasel. (I'm sure there's a story behind that, but it doesn't appear in the liner notes!). Lydia McCauley's next release is the hypnotic "Entrances," followed by "The Beauty of the Earth." If you enjoy her gentle, sonorous compositions, you will also like the work of harpist Lisa Lynne, harpist Thomas Loefke, singer Susan McKeown, guitarist Richard Searles, and the acoustic Celtic groups Orion and Orison.
Lydia's Music is Evocative.......1999-11-27
Sabbath Day's Journey is indeed a journey. One of spirit and grace and feeling, which are reflections of Lydia herself and her band. The first selection, Mother's Heart is a touching, lyrical piece. Her Celtic and Appalachian roots blend beautifully to produce the music of her soul and the ability to express feeling. Black is the Color is a haunting piece. Lydia's music displays the spectrum of spiritual to playful. It gets regular airplay on KSER. I have given this CD as gifts and will do so again. Lydia's music is reminiscent of Loreen McKennitt's. It is music to be enjoyed over and over. The many layers of its sound and meaning come through more with each listen!
Fresh breeze outside, warm fire in........1999-10-24
First, check out the eclectic folk instrumentation: not just viola, guitar and sitar, but also the doumbek, bouzouki and the Garden Weasel (it makes a nice percussive sound not found elsewhere). Then, listen to the clear vocals of Lydia McCauley. Lydia and her band sweep in with a debut album from Brimstone Music that deserves to be heard. Lydia has written or adapted songs that call from the heart to the heart, like a fresh breeze outside, warm fire in. Drawing from her Appalachian background, she sings an achingly lovely, simple rendition of the folk song "Black is the Color." Her own songs of the Pacific Northwest, such as "Grace Day," call out for deeper intimacy: "Forgiveness is a healing of a wound between us both." Drawing inspiration from spiritual soulmates Francis of Assisi and Julian of Norwich, she creates songs around ancient words, such as these from Julian: "All shall be well, all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well." Around that one sentence she and the band have made a swirling temple of song to end the album. The music is similar to that of Loreena McKennitt, but Lydia has more in her collection than Loreena's signature Celtic harp and high notes. Lydia's music stretches the concepts of journeys. Her journeys in this album dance between spiritual and secular lyrics, European and American music, and the inward and outward self. An excellent first CD, Sabbath Day's Journey is finding its way to an audience of thoughtful music lovers around the country.

Album Description
CAPTIVATING MUSIC FROM THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS
They came across the ocean from the British Isles.
They sang the songs of their homeland in a new country.
They lived, loved, and died here.
This is the music of the ForeignLander.
Lydia McCauley documented folk music at the prestigious Appalachian Music Archive in Berea, Kentucky in the early 1980's and studied with some of the best folk musicians in the Appalachian region. Known today as a songwriter, McCauley returns to her roots in her fifth album, ForeignLander; a collection of innovatively arranged pieces from 17-20th Century Appalachia, beautifully performed by McCauley and her touring Ensemble, along with special guests. While careful to preserve Appalachian traditions in this album, Lydia creates a fresh and contemporary sound that pleases both traditional and progressive music audiences. Selections include: One Morning in May, Pretty Saro, The River Trilogy (arranged by producer Kurt Scherer), Barbara Allan and Stella (two favorite live performance pieces), a haunting version of Lover's Lament, and Swallow's Return, a joyful instrumental composed by L. McCauley.
