Stringently self-critical, Brahms frequently revised his works; unfortunately, he destroyed most early versions, shutting off any glimpse into his working methods. (The B-major Piano Trio's first version survives, having been published long before he re-wrote it.) The works recorded here are among the exceptions; clearly, Brahms held them in unusually high regard. Both are better known in their later incarnations, and not without reason: the orchestral Haydn Variations glow and sparkle with a myriad colors, and the Sonata (originally a string quintet, quickly discarded) naturally gained expressive depth and breadth along with contrast of sound and texture when transformed into the famous Piano Quintet. But the music is great, and so is this performance: full of sweep, grandeur, warmth, fire, inwardness, romanticism without excess, flexibility without distortion, and ardor without sentimentality. The Variations work better, perhaps because the two versions are intrinsically more dissimilar and independent, and also because the writing itself permits more tonal variety. Indeed, the players give the theme a real wind instrument timbre. In the Sonata, the texture sometimes becomes dense and murky; one misses the radiance of the high strings and the dark sheen of the low ones. However, the superb pianists Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman could easily persuade anyone unfamiliar with these works that this is the only way to hear them. The ensemble is uncanny. The program does not specify which pianist leads, but there is a subtle hint: see if you can find it. Edith Eisler

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

Absoluty the best. It is no wonder she was the world premier cello artist!! Can't say enough. If you love cello, and classical music, this is a must have. Her whole collection is worth every penny!!!

(4.5/5 stars) This is a two-disc collection of musical works, in which the great cellist Jacqueline du Pre plays. The first disc consists of three cello concerti by three different composers: Dvorak (Romantic), Haydn (Classical) and Elgar (Romantic). Very good music, though it might leave you wondering what all the fuss is about. Not to worry: just pop in Disc Two to find out. The second disc contains shorter works by a wider variety of composers. It also might just leave you breathless by its beauty. Saint-Säens' "The Swan" (from "Carnival of the Animals") is nearly indescribable in its elegance, with du Pre's cello dancing with a harp. This haunting recording should not be missed. Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" is magnificently gorgeous as well. Three fantasy pieces from Schumann, one of Mendelssohn's "Lieder Ohne Wörter" and a stunning Brahms sonata infuse this collection with genuine grace. Since these were recorded prior to the advent of digital recordings, you might hear a very slight hiss on some of the recordings. This is barely audible and really does not detract from the pleasure of listening to it. Each disc runs 75 minutes, making this inspiration last long indeed.

As a cellist, I grew up listening to Jacqueline Du Pre's recordings. Even now as a 35 year old, I'm still enthralled by her amazing talent. This is a great cd if one is looking for a wonderful introduction to this superb cellist or simply wants to savor her most well known recordings. Du Pre owned the "Elgar" concerto. No other words can summarize this fact. Other beautiful and moving pieces are here on this disc: Bruch "Kol Nidrei", Haydn "Concerto No.2", Faure "Elegie", Brahms "Concerto No.2". The cello is a difficult instrument to play due to the strength required in both hands. Du Pre's playing touches the heartstrings with both emotion and depth. The tone that she coaxes from her cello is amazing. Jacqueline Du Pre is a legend.

Epitome of Cello.......2006-06-23

As a cellist, I absolutely love du Pré's work. I actually found this CD when I was looking for a modern recording of "A Jacqueline du Pré Recital", a record compiled of pieces done between July 15, 1962 and April 1, 1969. The second CD in this set contains the same songs as that record.

The concertos on the first CD are spectacular, especially her rendition of the Elgar concerto which has defined the piece since she first performed it. The second CD, however, is just as wonderful as a collection of some of the most loved cello pieces. No cello recording complete without Saint Saen's "The Swan" and du Pré's version is the only one I've ever heard that I actually like. "Elégie in C minor" (composed by Gabriel Fauré) is one of my personal favorites especially since her rapport with the pianist is obvious and the two instruments blend in a way that makes the piece even more poignant.

Overall, this CD is a must-have for anyone who loves cello as a perfect sample of Jacqueline du Pré's work.

As far as the romantic period goes, Jacqueline Du Pre is my personal favorite 'cellist. Her sensitivity to put expression of the musical idea always outweighed the desire to appear impressive. There is a difference in being just a virtuoso and being a musician. A virtuoso has the capability to dazzle and amaze, but music is more than just being impressive, and Du Pre succeeds in becoming, in every sense, a musician first and foremost. The only complaint I have of this album is the fact that you only get one movement of each piece! Even so, this a wonderful "sample dish" of Du Pre's extraordinary playing, mainly meant to get you hooked so you can get more.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

For the price, you can't go wrong.

*I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection some were better than others. This one was not too bad compared to the others, but not the best one.
I was kind of perturbed when some same tracks on this CD were on another CD, and visa versa.

A well-produced classical variety album.......2003-10-13

This album could have easily been filled with selections just from Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, and Beethoven, but thankfully the record producers chose some deeper cuts. Though the above mentioned greats are prominently featured (and rightly so), Grieg and Offenbach are welcome additions.

Like all the "25 _____ Favorites" albums I've listened to, the pieces are well-chosen, expertly performed, and excellently produced with sharp, clear sound. The album's variety is welcome as well, giving the listener 70+ minutes of a changing but continuous audio landscape.

There's not much here that will knock the socks off a classical purist, but that's part of its appeal. The pieces are good enough to satisfy the more refined classical music palate but accessible enough for those less-experienced in concertos. 25 CONCERTO FAVORITES comes recommended to those seeking a well-produced and pleasant classical variety album.

Great Concertos from Baroque to Romantic Era.......2000-08-16

The excerpts from 25 concertos range from the Baroque to Romantic Periods. They are all masterfully performed by virtuoso musicians (example: Brendel is the pianist in the last track, the Beethoven Emperor piano concerto). The violinists are skillful and well-known artists. Concerto music by Baroque legends such as Torelli and Bach. Mozart and Haydn's music is marvelous to hear. We have Mozart's piano concerto movements and flute concertos. Finally, in the Romantic field, Brahms, Mendelsshon and Tchaikovsky. This an affordable price for a cd that contains such excellent music.

Stringently self-critical, Brahms frequently revised his works; unfortunately, he destroyed most early versions, shutting off any glimpse into his working methods. (The B-major Piano Trio's first version survives, having been published long before he re-wrote it.) The works recorded here are among the exceptions; clearly, Brahms held them in unusually high regard. Both are better known in their later incarnations, and not without reason: the orchestral Haydn Variations glow and sparkle with a myriad colors, and the Sonata (originally a string quintet, quickly discarded) naturally gained expressive depth and breadth along with contrast of sound and texture when transformed into the famous Piano Quintet. But the music is great, and so is this performance: full of sweep, grandeur, warmth, fire, inwardness, romanticism without excess, flexibility without distortion, and ardor without sentimentality. The Variations work better, perhaps because the two versions are intrinsically more dissimilar and independent, and also because the writing itself permits more tonal variety. Indeed, the players give the theme a real wind instrument timbre. In the Sonata, the texture sometimes becomes dense and murky; one misses the radiance of the high strings and the dark sheen of the low ones. However, the superb pianists Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman could easily persuade anyone unfamiliar with these works that this is the only way to hear them. The ensemble is uncanny. The program does not specify which pianist leads, but there is a subtle hint: see if you can find it. Edith Eisler

There are those who carry unmerited disdain for the reduction of orchestral or quartet music to the piano state. Many feel this is beyond any composer's wishes - to have orchestral, fluid colors and nuances be relegated to the intrinsically percussive reproduction on the keyboard. But in fact, many composers wrote both one piano/4 hands and two piano versions of their favorite works, often performing them with friends during their lifetimes - Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Ravel to mention only a few.

This recording is a brilliant clarion call for such piano reduction performances. While everyone knows Brahms wrote 4 hand piano accompaniments for such works as his 'Liebeslieder', these two works here played with the full spectrum of intensity, suavity, clarity, percussive brilliance and gentle caressing by Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman are likely to be surprises to the listener. VARIATIONS ON A THEME OF HAYDN is a standard in the orchestral repertoire and here placing these creative variations within the keyboard domains of Ax and Bronfman makes them sing with a completely new voice. Much the same can be said of the more elegant Piano Sonata in F Minor. What began as a solo piano work passed through the stage of a work for string quintet and here is presented in the two piano variation, a work of great beauty and expressivity.

Ax and Bronfman are so in tune with each other's dissimilar approach to the keyboard that the result of their collaboration is a vastly enhanced experience for the listener: compare the earlier Rachmaninoff 'Symphonic Dances' and Suites for 2 Pianos' recorded in 2001. Now the two pianists perform these works (and other works which we can only hope they will record!) on the stages of the orchestral halls around the world: their recent appearance in the Los Angeles Disney Hall was a sonic revelation. Dynamic.......2005-05-21

I must be getting boring as I get older as listening to a live performance such as this one on a Friday night is my idea of a good time. The masterpiece compositions, energetic performances, excellent sound and the "live" dynamism that comes only from a concert performance all come together to create a magical moment in time - especially for fans of Argerich. This is a most satisfying CD.

The duo-piano version (Op. 34b) of Brahms famous piano quintet (Op. 34) was composed before the final piano quintet version. Thankfully, perfectionist Brahms did not throw this one in the trash as was his custom for works he was not satisfied with. The piano duo version here is given a lively and spunky performance that one would expect from Argerich - albeit with some out-of-synch piano playing in some spots. But, for Argerich fans this will likely not cause much distress as when one deeply admires someone or something, imperfections are lovingly overlooked. In the third movement scherzo, Argerich shows why she is one of the most dazzling pianists around with a powerful rhythmic propulsion that her partner struggles to match at times. I actually prefer the duo-piano version (this recording) to the piano quintet recordings I have, probably due to the vivacity and drama Argerich brings to it here.

But, the real star of this set may in fact be the Mendelssohn piano trio where Argerich is joined by a hot, newer talent from France - the Capucon brothers. I'll remember their names after hearing this performance. The three are in marvelous synch throughout the entire set and create truly wonderous sonorities and riverting musical moments. The second movement in particular is exceedingly lovely and is brought out by the Capucon brothers' strings with great lushness and passion. EMI captures their instruments with great realism and warmth that is melting at times. But, in the last two movements, it is Argerich who jumps in the drivers seat and shifts up a gear or two, with the two Capucon strings right there with her. It is marvelous music, with Martha laying down rapid-fire notes with such delicacy, lightness and precision that should put a smile on your face - part out of amazement, part out of pure joy. Their treatment of Mendlessohn's famous "gossamer-like" scherzo is spot-on - with an ever-so-light touch, blazing speed, supreme precision of ensemble. The integration of all this takes great concentration and teamwork which is not lacking one bit here. This piece is an absolute delight and, thankfully too, is recorded with superb, crisp, dynamic sound to enhance the experience. And, unlike some other Argerich concert recordings where audience coughing is just as loud as the music, this recording is pristine and the only audience noise you will hear is thunderous applause at the end of each of the two works. A most exciting and recommended CD, especially for Argerich fans.

VARIABLE STAR.......2003-12-25

There are 5-star ratings and 5-star ratings. My conscience is quiet in awarding one to this disc provided I make it as clear as I can to music-lovers unacquainted with Argerich's work what they should and should not expect.

In this age of spectacular virtuosi and virtuose, what makes one say `Argerich' on hearing an unfamiliar performance is a very characteristic impetuosity. When Argerich is at her most unmistakable she will abruptly move the tempo up a gear or more than one during fast movements, and if she is playing a concerted piece at the time so will whoever else is involved however distinguished. (Just hear Rostropovich follow her in the last movement of Chopin's cello sonata.) This disc is absolutely fascinating in giving us one performance (the Brahms) that shows that side of her, and another that sheds a completely different light on this great, temperamental and intriguing artist. And of course she is not on her own in either of these pieces, and thereby hangs a tale too.

My `chiefest and most principal' reason for acquiring this record was to own the Brahms in its 2-piano version, described by Tovey as `magnificent as to clarity and power' or words to that effect. In our everyday musical lives it is the piano quintet, and although I am one of Brahms's more immoderate admirers, that is a piece where I can keep my composure better than in many others. Fine performances of it are rarer than blackberries in September, but still the rule rather than the exception, and there has been for three-quarters of a century a guiding star for its interpretation - a binary consisting of Serkin's two accounts, first with the Busches and decades later his very-little-different version with the Budapest. This is not in the Serkin mould at all, as is obvious after a few bars when Argerich typically flies at the semiquaver outburst. The first movement is arguably too fast, but unarguably thrilling. Ensemble with Zilberstein is a little ragged here and there, but that just adds to the excitement, and the clarity that Tovey found in this arrangement kept me fascinated by canonic devices that I had noticed much less in the quintet version. The second movement is categorically too fast - Brahms asks for a touch of adagio in the tempo, and the movement should basically be a lullaby. The third movement is superb, and for some reason I became more aware than usual of how the outer sections are modelled, bar for bar and modulation for modulation, on the first section of the third movement of Beethoven's fifth symphony. In the introduction to the finale the players make no attempt to recapture the whispered mystery that strings can invest it with, and I suspect rightly not. And in the final allegro ma non troppo the tempo is dead right - going too fast here would have been an outrage. They even apply a stately allargando to the last phrase of all, and I found I liked that. In passing, the liner note says that the lost strings-only original was a quartet version, not as I had always thought a quintet with 2 cellos like Schubert's. As the note is the work of one of the most unpleasing wafflers in the business, I shall provisionally disbelieve this statement.

In the Mendelssohn trio we are in a different world. Here Argerich is joined by the youthful brothers Capucon, and there is much more feeling of equality among the players. Argerich relaxes, even in the marvellous fleetness of the scherzo. She is perennially youthful herself, and I hope to hear more of her collaborators here who are clearly major interpreters in their own right. It is a young people's reading throughout, far more so than most versions I hear, but reminiscent of what I heard from the prodigiously gifted students of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester at their recent Mendelssohn chamber-music festival.

I first heard Argerich at the Edinburgh Festival 40 or so years ago. It seemed to me then that I was listening to a new Horowitz, and I had not at that time grasped the significance of Michelangeli, whose pupil she was albeit only for four lessons. Michelangeli claimed to have taught her `the music of silence', a remark apparently as incomprehensible to her as to me. As far as the music of sound goes, she is unique, like all the greatest players. I gather she plans no more solo events, and I hope there will be more chamber work as involving as I have found this disc.

martha shines at lugano.......2003-06-21

On this CD are two recordings from the 2002 Summer Music Festival in Lugano Switzerland featuring chamber music collaborations with Martha Argerich. Although the three other musicians debuting at Lugano ,including the Capucon brothers, were integral parts of the performances, the recordings undoubtedly focus on Martha Argerich's transcendental pianism.

The first work, the Brahms Piano Quintet in it's original form as a two piano sonata is a stunning work. Being a die-hard Argerich fan and pianist myself, I have to say that her recordings of this piece reign supreme. I would say, however, that this is not Martha Argerich's best recording of this piece...in many places, her collaborator Lilya Zilberstein becomes rather sloppy and it becomes difficult for them to continue together. It also lacks the subtulty of her greatest recording, with Rabinovich--technically superior as well, which I would reccomend everyone buy.

The Mendelssohn Trio is taken slightly too far out of context in it's interpretation...it becomes almost Debussy--as Argerich often plays music of this period. Brilliant last movement, introspective second, blisteringly fast third (of course), and a rather strange but beautiful first. The Capucon brothers make a stunning debut at the festival and one should keep one's eyes on them in the future. I would reccomend more her recording done at the Beppu Festival with Gil Shaham and Mischa Maisky which is bursting with vitality and is played more in context. Sadly however, this recording is only available in Japan ...Miss Argerich personally gave me a copy so I wouldn't know where to buy one.

Although the Mendelssohn is slightly out of context and the Brahms rather inprecise at times, this is still a must have CD. However, I would advise those wishing to hear Argerich's recording of the Mendelssohn not to fall into the trap of imitating her phrasing as I did.

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.
