Opera fans are bound to be disappointed, but almost everyone else will find something to like in this easy-listening, simple, direct, sometimes tuneful and treacly, sometimes rhythmically strong music, performed here by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and an assortment of other singers and players. Dame Kiri is part Maori, and this music returns her to her roots: Lovely melodies abound, some interesting accompaniments are to be found, and a glimpse into a world we rarely get to see is most welcome. But classical music aficionados will walk away a bit hungry--this is world music, this is folk music, but this is not operatic in any way. Te Kanawa uses an easy-flowing, "pop" sound and is closely miked; at times it barely sounds like her at all. But for what it is, it certainly pleases, and fans of this soprano will be interested in hearing this side of her. There's enjoyable music here, but those allergic to sentiment be warned--some of this music makes "Feelings" seem cynical. --Robert Levine

This CD has been a delight to listen to ever since I bought it. Some of the tracks are slow and beautiful and sentimental, while others are upbeat, bouncy and fun...and all of them are utterly addicting. My personal favorites are 'Tatakihi', which has lots of tribal drums and sounds very war-like. 'Hoea Ra' has a very simple melody, but it is extremely beautiful, it starts out with just instruments, then the back-up singers come in and sing the principal melodic line, and then Kiri comes in and sings the melody, and then starts singing some variations and improvisations of the melody...the song in itself is very hymn-like. 'Huri Huri' made me smile the first time I heard it. It's very playful and joyful. 'Ara ka Titiro' starts out sounding very mysterious and mystical, with flutes and synthesizers and tribal chants and war-cries, then it goes down a completely different road...it sounds like something you might hear at a luau or something...but it's one of those addicting tracks...I don't think you can listen to this one and not smile and move with the rythms. These are the kind of songs you find yourself humming throughout the day. Everything from flutes, keyboards, synthesizers, drums and guitars are used. A few of the tracks even have some nature sounds (bird-songs, etc.) Don't expect to hear Kiri like you normally would...while she does engage her upper register a few times, alot of the time she just uses her middle-lower register, and a non-operatic style of singing, So if you're expecting to hear her sing these songs like she might sing Mozart or Strauss, you'll probably be disappointed. But this album is THOUROUGHLY enjoyable anyhow. It's nice to hear Kiri singing the songs of her homeland. It shows that she's one of the more down-to-earth divas.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sings her native Maori songs beautifully. She has a vibrant,full, clear voice which reflects all of her musical training. She sings these songs with/from her heart.
This is a stunning recording, but you have to keep in mind that this is a well trained, operatic voice. It is BIG, meant to fill an opera house. The chorus has also been brought up to sing crisper, with more dynamic musical expression. I thoughly enjoy this recording.
If you are looking for Maori songs sung closer to normal voice, then the Jane Eru recording of Maori songs, and the Maori Sons of New Zealand albums will be a better choice. This is the difference between operatic and pop voice. The heart and soul are there in all recordings.

Dame Kiri performance is, as usual, outstanding. A very nice blend of choral and solo with backup.

I recommend this album to anyone.

I own this cd. It is wonderful. Love all the songs. What a beautiful voice Kiri Te Kanawa has. The first time I ever heard her sing, I was spellbound. Couldn't believe the voice coming out of her . Wonderful music and a wonderful singer.

I am very disappointed in this CD. The beauty of Maori music is in the choral singing--the blending of voices.

This album is mainly solo renditions.

These are post-European contact Maori songs sung by well-matched voices to acoustic guitar accompaniment. If you want a taste of the beauty of the Maori language, if you want to be charmed, if you want to hear something different, get this CD now.

I can't give this CD anything but a 2. It was certainly NOT the Ultimate Lullaby. And although the music is beautiful I would not put my baby to sleep with this. I'm not a fan of opera and perhaps if I listen a bit more that may change. Our daughter listens to music every night. It is so hard to buy music sometimes and I went out on a limb with this one. I really wish it had stated that there were vocals - I much prefer the music without.

I bought this cd on a whim, and I got way more than I bargained for! I'm an opera singer and I absolutely love the assortment of gorgeous ballads - lots of classics and old favorites. I agree this might not be the best music to lull and infant to sleep, but it's a great way to build your child's appreciation for operatic vocals. I highly recommend this cd singers - specifically sopranos. It's a diamond in the rough.

I'm in violent agreement with the other reviewers who remarked that this CD is not for the purpose of lulling baby to sleep, in spite of its misleading title. A1-opera-grade sopranos and mezzos sing most of the selections and their vocal dynamics range from pianissimo to a house-shaking fortissimo. The only track where baby might catch a bit of shut-eye is Puccini's "Humming Chorus" from "Madama Butterfly."

Try "Celtic Lullaby" if you're looking for a truly sleep-inducing CD.

"The Ultimate Lullaby Album" contains a wonderful assortment of Marilyn Horne and Leontyne Price solos, which is all to the good if you're not trying to snooze. My two favorites are the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" sung by Price (I don't think there is a more perfect rendition), and Bach's "Bist Du bei Mir" sung by Horne in her rich, smooth, chocolate-y prime.

Unfortunately another grand voice is not at its prime in "When You Wish upon a Star." I'd guess Dame Joan was near the end of her stellar (sorry) career when she recorded this Disney song. Her vibrato stretches as wide as Dumbo's behind.

Another rather odd selection is the only instrumental arrangement on this CD: "O Danny Boy" as rendered by the English Chamber Orchestra, with a trombone as the lugubrious solo instrument. It's long enough and trite enough to be used as the soundtrack for that tacky sequel to "Gone with the Wind."

"The Ultimate Lullaby Album" is definitely not for baby's room. If you want your kid to grow up listening to "Londonderry Air," get Kiri Te Kawana's version. It'll prickle up the hair on the back of your neck if you can find it. I can't. I wore out my original tape and have fruitlessly searched the Internet for a new copy. If anyone out there in Amazon land has a recording of Dame Kiri singing folksongs of the British Isles, please consider selling it to me.

The music is superb. Although it would not be used to put the baby to sleep, it is a wonderful choice for one-to-one relaxing time with baby.
An excellent addition to the new baby's music collection. I listened to it with my class in school before giving it to my brand new grandson. I now give it as a gift to all newborns.

3 music fans gave different ratings. 2 said it's diappointing, the other said they were ridiculous. I bought and listened to this CD. I feel great about my purchase. These are good music, and there should not be a dispute. If one is disappointed because of the opera voice, blame it on Decca's label "Ultimate Lullaby". The music deserves my 5-satr rating.

This the review that I wrote for OperaOnline.us: There is only one word to describe this compilation of varied works by soprano Kiri Te Kinawa: Elegant! From the cover to the selection of songs inside, to the way each selection contributes to and results in a perfect blend of orchestra and singer, nothing is out of place. I usually prefer CDs that are thematic and carry a mood throughout, and this offering by DECCA, bless them, will not disappoint those who share my sensitivity to mood. It doesn't hurt either that Kinawa's voice radiates control and smoothness that sweeps one up in defiance of gravity to a place somewhere betyween awe and gratitude, but that is exactly what occurs here. You listen to the melodic expressiveness of Beim Schlafengehen with the Wiener Philharmoniker and think it can't get any better, and then find it followed by Ave Maria with the Utah Symphony, followed by Pie Jesu with the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal, and it does get better. The chorals are pretty impressive as well, as in Nuns' Chorus and Climb Every Mountain. Consistently Kinawa's voice soothes and never presses even close to the edges of shrill. She is a soprano with depth and a cultured delivery that wraps every note in any range with the delicacy of a mother's loving embrace. It just doesn't get any better than this. Give this CD to someone you love, they'll appreciate it, with this one caveat: the second of the two disks is less moody and a little uneven in mood. Hold the second disc back.

      I was looking for a CD that featured not only traditionalMaori songs, but also traditional Maori instuments. This CD has the songs, but the music is played by an electric guitar combo- no poi balls :(

      As a big fan of international music, I have to admit that I love Maori music. Anyone who knows about the Maori culture will agree that this is one CD that should be in their music library. These Maori songs talk about their culture, their way of life and nature. There is more to these songs than just listening for voices and/or instruments... it's about KNOWING what the songs mean!

      I was looking for some "a capella" singing but on this CD all the tracks are accompanied by a Hawaiian guitar combo which in places over powers the music.

      A lot of the harmonies and features of the music had been cleaned up and sanitized for the western market. Sad really.

        I have had this CD for several years. I have eight Maori CD's and I feel this one is the best. There is a good mix of chants and songs. None of these selections are attempted mixes of western pop and Maori music. The literature in the jacket is brief. In part they say, "every effort has been made to retain the warmth of the original recording's location." I agree.
