A Window in Time

Editorial Reviews

This collection of Rachmaninoff's solo piano performances relies on a mix of old and new technologies. Between 1919 and 1929, Rachmaninoff cut these 19 performances to piano rolls, which would then be played back through reproducing pianos capable of accurately re-creating the original performances through pneumatic devices that animated the rolls with living nuances and shades--a facet that differentiated the classier reproduction keyboards from the more common "player pianos." This set updates the technology with electronic devices--transparently, though expertly, replacing the pneumatics. Played back on a Bösendorfer Reproducing Piano, this collection sounds astounding, full of Rachmaninoff's lickety-quick motion and his punching intensity when striking the keys. There are 18 Rachmaninoff selections--some of them collaborations--and one gem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," taken to new places in this 1919 reading. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

1 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice - wasted.......2007-07-10

I was introduced to Mary Fahl via October Project. I had never heard anything like them before or since and Fahl's voice is nearly beyond compare with anyone else, though as an earlier reviewer said, Annie Lennox and Carly Simon come close. I just don't think they have Fahl's range.
So, you can imagine after October Project's demise, I was looking forward to hearing more of Fahl. After-all, a voice like that just can't be silenced.
Too bad it wasn't - at least for the garbage on this album. Redemption is probably the only song that shows what she can do with her voice. The rest is just a waste of her talents. God, I certainly hope she does not go down the same road that Karen Carpenter did and make everything she sings sound like a funneral dirge. She's trying very hard with the muck written for this album to do just that. The writing credits alone should have been enough to give it away right there. HOW many people does it take to write ONE song? Apparently as many as want to have a say in it for this disaster. Listen, if you start getting more than two people tossing in their two cents worth on any one song, you had better consider not writing it, much less trying to sing it. It is going to sound like a collage of miss-matched ideas and influences. Gee - just like most of the music (if you can call it that) on this album! I certainly hope that Mary Fahl will be able to find another record label willing to take her on when her current one dumps her for this waste of money and resources - with the priviso of course that all she does is sing the songs a talented songwriter creates for her.

2 out of 5 stars only 3 good song.......2007-01-11

still, october proyect is the best and her voice is the best, but this cd is not the greates but think about if you like her and then buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Perfect.......2007-01-09

The more I listen to this cd the more I am entranced with it. I have enjoyed Mary Fahl's voice since October Project. I am eagerly awaiting some more new material. She has a very powerful and touching voice. I gain something new each time I listen to her voice, music and lyrics. Thank you Mary!

4 out of 5 stars Emotional Voice.......2006-06-09

Since when the founder October Project came to an end, Mary's voice was already one one of the highlights of the band. And this is proved here. A very good debut album!

3 out of 5 stars Style departure.......2005-08-14

Like previous reviewers, I too was sceptical about this CD."The
Great Unknown" seems to be an October Project track right off, billowing, inspiring and lush, you would never know the difference. It is my favorite. The rest of the songs really take a departure in style from what I am used to hearing from Mary. Though enjoyable, she seems to be searching for an audience. I hope she continues to put out sounds which can inspire and provoke thought in their writing without getting too sentimental. Pretty girl, great voice, don't let them change your style.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Rachmaninoff is in the house!.......2007-02-08

Superb sound quality! This is not a remastered recording made back in the '50's. This is actually Rachmaninoff performing via a special, pressure-sensitive type player piano. It truly sounds like he was recorded live with our current technology. The accompanying booklet explains everything very clearly.

Rachmaninoff was not only an exceptional composer, he was also an exceptional (if that is a strong enough term) performer. This CD allows you to experience his performing abilities as though you were sitting with him today. Great CD for every collection, even if you only casually listen to classical music on a rare occasion.

Rachmaninoff Rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2006-07-15

No, I'm not a kid. But I am quite the Rachmaninoff ethusiast;I own all his recordings, both acoustic/electric and piano roll. Before buying these discs (i.e. the two volumes of A Window In Time), I read the reviews here, and was a bit reluctant in purchasing them after having read the negative ones. They claim that "there is no music" in these cds, that the "performances" are uncharacteristic of Mr. Rachmaninoff. But after comparing these performances with those recorded centuries ago, they do indeed seem to be accurate. Though they were digitally transferred, the authenticity is still there. I actually wonder if the naysayers only bash this collection because of the fact that these rolls were converted in such a way, and because of this formed a harsh bias. The alternative to these recordings on Decca are nice sounding though the tempi are a bit off, as proven by the recordings of the master himself playing. This is especially evident in the G minor Prelude; the Decca version is simply too slow and simply unlike Rachmaninoff. The version here, however, sounds very much like his playing. Despite my praises, there are two flaws I find in AWIT.The first is the use of a Boesendorfer that at times sounds awkward, like in the ending of Elegy; personally I would have loved for these to have been somehow transferred onto a Steinway, and Rachmaninoff would agree with me, as he performed exclusively on Steinways. The second flaw is that, yes, that little bit of sponteneity found in the acoustic/electric recordings is missing, but of course neither anyone nor anything can reproduce Rachmaninoff's pianism in a flawless but Rachmaninoff himself. I strongly reccommend both volumes of "A Window in Time". Try not to let the negative reviewers sway you, decide for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Where Does This Take us to?.......2005-10-13

Wonderful music most brilliantly played, with no coughings or whatever. Many of them are celebrated pieces too. But I won't for a moment suggest any serious piano music lover to really compare it with Rachmaninov's RCA recordings even if you have the heavy hissings of the latter on the other side of the balance. You will probaly more fun if you could just concentrate on what this technology could achieve.

5 out of 5 stars The dead come alive.......2005-01-14

This is the best reconstruction of historic playing you'll ever hear, in part because while Rachmaninoff is playing it's as if he were installed on a big Boesendorfer in your living room. Finally we hear why in his time R. was if anything a bigger name as performer than as composer. Wonderful music, with rich recorded sound, and the always-exquisite sound of the Boesendorfer.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Magnificent!.......2004-07-19

I just got this CD and with some trepidations sat back and listened intently from start to finish. WOW!! I was hoping that the negative reviews about mechanical and robotic playing would not be too accurate. Well those reviews were utterly absurd, these are MAGNIFICENT recordings! To paraphrase the liner notes, we can thank our lucky stars that we live in a time that technology can bring us this close to the great Rachmaninoff! From some of the reviews one could think this is some sort of computer generated music, robotic and lifeless. Nothing could be further from the truth. The humanity, soul and beauty of the playing leaps out at you. We owe Mr. Stahnke a debt of gratitude for this labor of love. This is art restoration of a high order, not technological interference. To fault this incredible "remastering" of the orginal rolls is like faulting the new digital transfers of old analog tape. It is not "interfering" with original recordings, it is restoration. Purist debates and Bose versus Stein arguments are meaningless when hearing Rachmaninoff play with this level of clarity and beauty of sound. Just like digital transfer of classic films or "cleaning" of masterpiece paintings, this is technology being used to increase our experience of the original intent, not to alter it. I have ordered the second one as well and will purchase every single issue of old piano roll masters that is restored like this. Don't hesitate, these are truly magnificent recordings that will not disappoint. Five stars without reservation!

5 out of 5 stars A New Kind of Ensemble.......2005-04-09

The CD, Consorts for Viols was put out on the Avie label and made possible by Magnatune. The performers are the viol quartet Phantasm and two guest artists, Susanna Pell and Asako Morikawa.

The viol, in its nature, is a chamber instrument. It is not unlike the cello, yet its differences are pronounced when one takes a close look at the two instruments.

The viol has a rounder shape than the cello and has six strings instead of four. The playing techniques of the instruments are different. One of the most pronounced differences is in the way the bow is held. On a cello the bow is held with the strings facing downwards and the player's hand is at the very end of the bow. The viol's bow strings, on the other hand, face upwards and the player's hand is positioned somewhere near the end but closer to the middle.
Because of its internal makeup, the viol has been considered only suitable for chamber music. Phantasm is definitely such an ensemble; yet the way their instruments are projected on the recording, the listener is forced to think of the viol as capable of something more.

Phantasm, on their recent release Consorts for Viols, play a wide variety of music by the English composer Orlando Gibbons. They begin with the Fantasias. A fantasy, or fantasia, is an work with an improvisational quality that is spun out of a theme or motive. The first fantasia that Phantasm plays is Fantasia V. It has a quick, lively beginning then slows down to sober, sliding notes and returns again to a mood like the beginning one. Fantasia VI features solo entries in all the viols and then a dialogue- like section between the tenor and bass.

Fantasia III is especially noted for the interweaving counterpoint in its middle. This characteristic can be seen to a certain degree in all of the music on this recording and definitely proves Gibbons's outstanding ability in choral music in which one can hear counterpoints of all kinds interwoven in the vocal parts. All six fantasias are played as well as the four fantasies that are heard later on the CD.

The fantasies are very fugal in character. The fugue was rather a new, innovative genre during Gibbons's time. A fugue features a subject stated solo followed by the subject restated in all of the other voices whilst each voice, after it states the subject, continues on with free material.

The subject of Gibbons's Fantasy I is composed of long, repeated notes. A second theme seems to appear in the middle of the work that is characterized by upwards rising notes. This is similar to the ricercar, a kind of fugue that would have been popular during Gibbon's day; it was used mainly for liturgical purposes and featured more than one subject. Fantasy III's theme is so characteristic of the rhythmic tendency during the Renaissance with its short-long beat. Fantasy IV has a rather regal theme stated solo in the tenor, and the middle of this piece features falling arpeggio's.
After the Fantasies, come two anthems originally written for chorus but which Phantasm plays on viols. The second, Hosanna to the Son of David has upwards scales in it. These were probably meant as word painting for the text "Hosanna in the highest". Phantasm does a good job of evoking the mood of an organ and singers that would have normally been used for these anthems.

Two popular tunes used as a ground bass for variations are Go from my Window and Peascod Time, originally written as virginal music. Gibbons's writing in these two pieces can be technically challenging, but the violists of Phantasm tackle it with great clarity and distinctness of line. Both tunes have a country sound reflecting their ground basses.

Special mention must be made about the Salisbury Pavan. This pavan was originally written by Gibbons's for the virginal, and in it he placed one note that went just a little too low for that instrument.(The note was AA; virginals generally went to C.) This song incited the expansion of the range of the virginal. Since that time, the range of the keyboard has continued to be expanded through adventuresome composers taking - as we may think of it - the lead from Orlando Gibbons.

In the booklet notes, Laurence Dreyfus, the director, specifically mentions that this work and its "excruciatingly expressive" dissonances are "so beloved of Glenn Gould". This is not the only time he mentions the Canadian pianist. Again, he writes of Gould's praise of Gibbons's anthems and how he wore out three recordings of those works. He states that viol players and Glenn Gould do have something in common.

The clarity with which the performer's of Phantasm bring out the complex lines of Gibbons's music is exemplary. They are able to create a structural sense of rhythm without having a clear meter, especially in the Fantasias and Fantasies. Technically they keep a clean sound, and musically they bring out the lines of the phrase structures.

This CD won the 2004 Gramophone Early Music award, and a bonus track is available at www.magnatune.com.

The words for The Silver Swan, a part-written song for voices conditioned by Phantasm for viols and played on this CD are:

The silver swan, who living had no note,
When death approach'd, unlock'd her silent throat;
Leaning her breast against the reedy shore,
Thus sung her first and last, and sung no more.
Farewell, all joys; O Death, come close mine eyes;
More geese than swans now live, more fools than wise.

-Contrapunctus

5 out of 5 stars Soothing, Energizing and Great Sounding Album.......2004-11-12

I do not have a deep understanding of classical music. I usually tend to buy albums that intuitively appeal to me on the first listen. I first listened to this on British Airways' inflight classical music selection.

Needless to say I can't give you a "classical" interpration of this CD. The rich sound of the viols is very relaxing and energizing at the same time. The album is very well recorded and mastered -- just a glorious soundstage and you can pin point every single move of the string on every single viol. If you are an audiophile, this is a must buy just to see how well your system can reproduce the rich sounds of the different viols.

I am glad I bought this album! Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars These songs must have been written for Amaize.......2004-04-07

My gripe with most recordings of "art songs" is that the performances are boring, as if the music has been fed through a vocal processor, technique overrides heart. This is never the case with Odekhiren Amaize, who makes each song his own. For my money, there is no voice or heart more perfectly suited to interpret these deep, rich Russian songs than his deep, rich Bass-Baritone...the combination of Rakhmaninov and Amaize is nothing short of amazing, and I was moved to tears on more than one occasion even though (not speaking Russian and not first having read the English translations) I didn't have a clue what the text was about. Absolutely stunning!

The second flaw is that, yes, that little bit of sponteneity found in the acoustic/electric recordings is missing, but of course neither anyone nor anything can reproduce Rachmaninoff's pianism flawlessly but Rachmaninoff himself. I strongly reccommend both volumes of "A Window in Time". Try not to let the negative reviewers sway you, decide for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A Window in Time ~Johann Sebastian Bach.......2005-10-04

This is a wonderful CD. The sound is as if Rachmaninoff had recorded it yesterday. The marvelous technology allows us to reach into the past and recover glories that we had thought forever lost.

2 out of 5 stars Dull and lifeless.......2004-11-24

I was very disappointed to hear this recording, after hearing Rachmaninov live on the two Naxos recordings and also hearing the recordings of the Ampico rolls on Decca.

Something seems to have happened during all of the manipulation; the playing seems to have been homogenized. The rythm and tempo are no longer dynamic, and the highs and lows have been smoothed off. This is not the case with the recordings of the Ampico rolls, played back on an Ampico-equipped machine, on the Decca CD which are very dynamic and lively.

The sound on this CD is beautiful, but I'm afraid I'll only use it as background noise.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!.......2003-11-14

Despite what the naysayers have been nay-saying about this disc, I think it would be very hard to be disappointed by them, from any standpoint. If they are somehow the contrived product of some deranged producer's imagination, then I could only hope that other pianists would begin to "contrive" their own playing to match what I've heard on these discs. If the piano sounds flat, un-natural and limited in dynamic range, then I hope manufacturers of pianos begin to aim for these qualities in their instruments.

Ok, maybe that's a little blunt - and I do have to admit that I enjoyed these discs more when I had a nicer sound system. Since I've stepped down to something much smaller and cheaper, these discs have lost some of their sparkle - more than some of the other discs in my collection. Even now, though, I love them and listen to them frequently. For me, every note is filled with the awesome sensitivity and mind-blowing technic of a great pianist. The tempos are steady, clear and straightforward - and I think this is not evidence of a contrived medium, but of Rachmaninoff's no-nonsense playing style. As an amateur pianist, teacher and long-time lover of piano music, I think there is a great deal to admire in this approach.

If you're suspicious about these recordings, then listen before you buy, but don't pass on the opportunity to discover the great playing of Rachmaninoff, without the crack and pop of a 78-rpm recording.

2 out of 5 stars mechanical echoes.......2003-04-17

As a classical music buff and an amateur pianist, I eagerly purchased both volumes of "A Window in Time". Unfortunately, I found both albums disappointing. There is little range in touch and dynamics; for example, the virtual performer seems incapable of legato. The technical problem lies in the recording of the piano rolls. Although the rolls are "digital" in nature, they do not have the capability to capture nuances. What is left is some sense of Rachmaninoff's timing, but even that is suspect - in the liner notes, Stahnke mentions the problems he experienced with determining what speed at which to play the rolls. That "impressive speed" you hear may be artificially sped up.

5 out of 5 stars "Broadway Shows from the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-23

Percy Faith blends two award winning Broadway Shows together "Subways Are For Sleeping" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 8533 in 1961) and "Do I Hear A Waltz?" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9117 in 1965), following the formula of previous albums from the vault of rare finds ~ two more winners are under the baton of the Maestro.

First twelve tracks "Subways Are For Sleeping", featuring the songs of Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Jule Styne with outstanding arrangements on very catchy tunes ~ like "BE A SANTA", "COMES ONCE IN A LIFETIME", "GETTING MARRIED", "HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE A FACE?", "I JUST CAN'T WAIT", "I SAID IT AND I'M GLAD", "I'M JUST TAKING MY TIME", "NOW I HAVE SOMEONE", "RIDE THROUGH THE NIGHT", "WHAT IS THIS FEELING IN THE AIR?", "WHEN YOU HELP A FRIEND OUT" and "WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN?", all have the hallmark sound and the authentic "Percy Faith Touch" on every selections.

Second twelve tracks ~ "Do I Hear A Waltz", featuring the tunes of Richard Rodgers and Stephen Soundheim enhanced by the performances of arranger/conductor Percy Faith and his Orchestra ~ "A PERFECTLY LOVELY COUPLE", "DO I HEAR A WALTZ?", "HERE WE ARE AGAIN", "MOON IN MY WINDOW", "NO UNDERSTAND", "SOMEONE LIKE YOU", "STAY", "TAKE THE MOMENT", "THANK YOU SO MUCH", "THINKING", "THIS WEEK AMERICANS" and "WE'RE GONNA BE ALL RIGHT", enamored to the luxurious sound of Faith's string arrangements ~ you're immediately hooked on these tracks ~ marvelous performances enthralling listener's for some fifty years.

The people at Collectables should be commended for bringing back some of Maestro Faith's best works on compact disc ~ there is so much more in the vast vaults, hopefully there will be more to follow...gotta love it!
