Fauré: 13 Nocturnes
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Germaine Thyssens-Valentin is unfamiliar to most music lovers, but her 1950s series of Fauré recordings for an obscure French record label are among the best ever. They were made after she returned to concertizing from having abandoned a promising career to raise five children. Her affinity for Fauré's piano music is immediately apparent in the way she inhabits its inner core. The Nocturnes are elusive, reflective works, whose surface beauties conceal a world of deep, if understated, feeling. Like no other player in the catalogue, Thyssens-Valentin penetrates their depths, playing with gorgeous tone, brilliant technique that never calls attention to itself, and an attention to accompanying lines that give the music a rarely conveyed richness and density. In her Nocturne No. 3, for example, subsidiary lines are woven to enrich the melodic line in ways that make the version by Arthur Rubinstein (RCA) sound merely pretty. Her performances of other Nocturnes reveal that such contemporary pianists as Pascal Rogé (Decca) indulge in inappropriate Romantic excess, while Kathryn Stott (Hyperion) is unidiomatic and flat alongside Thyssens-Valentin's absolute "rightness." Great performances of great music. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:
Dull.......2007-03-09
The previous reviewer was right about Faure's piano music being of "introspective moods, rich chromatic textures, subtle expressivity and sheer tonal beauty", however, I heard very little of that in Stott's playing.
If lifelessness is what equates introspection for the critics that praised these recordings, then Stott's Faure deserves every award it's gotten. The fact is, her playing seriously lacks the "chromatic textures, subtle expressivity and sheer tonal beauty" that is so important for Faure, and the only reason these recordings are so highly praised is because of patriotic bias. Even the Naxos bargain offerings by Volondat is much better.
Penguin Rosette Award Winner.......2006-03-22
Faure's piano music is autobiographical in which the earlier pieces exude a more simple, upbeat optimism which yields to greater austerity, ambiguity, unpredictability and melancholy in the later works. Yet, his music always retains its civility and french beauty in spite of emotionalal, tempestuous episodes. If you gravitate towards piano music of introspective moods, rich chromatic textures, subtle expressivity and sheer tonal beauty, then definately consider this rather equisite music by one of the more humble composers of the magical salon, romantic era of Paris.
Pianist Kathryn Stott seems to have the type of personna and style that is well-suited for the gentile, urbane and somewhat understated music of Faure. Ms. Stott has focused her career primarily on the chamber and solo repertoire, and within that, mostly on 19th-century French music. She is one of today's most prominent proponents of French music - so much so that the French government awarded her special recognition as such. Some of her work includes performances with the ever-popular Yo-Yo Ma ("La Belle Epoque") as well as several for Hyperion (whose artists tend to only be of the "upper shelf" category).
Even hearing a few pieces of this landmark set reveals the typical emphasis on elegance and beauty within French music in general. The Penguin Guide awarded this four-CD set a PENGUIN ROSETTE citing while Gramophone gave it a "Critic's Choice" award - both of which certainly says something positive if you are thinking of purchasing it. Also each of the four CD's contains a generous 70+ minutes with the typically clear and brilliant Hyperion sound. Again, if you like solo piano music that coaxes and caresses with nuance rather than shouts to make its point, then Stott's complete Faure set here should give a lifetime of refreshment and inspiritation. Here are some other mainstream press reviews on this CD (also see Stott's other single-disc highlight CD for more Amazon reviews).
'One of the most purely pleasurable releases of the year so far. The playing is intelligent, persuasive, Ioving, and the music reaches far beyond the standard boundaries of fin de si?cle French salon style. Four outstanding discs' (The Independent)
'Sumptuously recorded. A true and dedicated Francophile [Kathryn Stott] is clearly among the more stylish and intriguing of all young pianists' (Gramophone)
'She deserves an honoured place beside the most distinguished Faure exponents ... A major achievement in every way' (Classic CD)
'A tremendous achievement' (BBC Music Magazine)
'A major contribution to the recorded literature of French piano music, strongly recommended' (Fanfare, USA)

The Very Best Faure..........2004-06-16
The late nocturnes of Faure are virtually his best works for piano solo. One can see why Faure is sometimes called "the French Brahms," for he makes great use of the lower registers of the piano--for which Brahms also had a great affinity. Still, Faure also has a kind of luminescent airiness in the bright upper registers--which is something of a "classic" characteristic of much purely French music.
Faure's nocturnes have a meditative ambience. It's thought that because Faure himself was ambidextrous his pieces frenquently seem to offer this step-wise balance alternating between the hands: in some passages, the effect is quite hypnotic.
Frenchman Jean Martin has a real handle on these works: he lets them breathe fully, and his timing is very steady and ambient--which is exactly what these pieces call for. Some might consider Martin's realizations "slow," but he's brilliant where he needs to be, and slower is better than faster: after all, this is not a footrace.
The recorded sound is excellent.
Definitely Bedtime Music.......2001-12-01
Unlike the nocturnes of Chopin, or even Field (whose compositions redefined the 'nocturne' as night time evocations), Faure's nocturnes are more like meditative mood pieces, rather than the restrained forward moving compositions of the former. Martin elicits a wonderfully even tone in his playing, bright and bassy, but the midtones are recorded a little high. There are times I wish he wouldn't swoon so much in his playing, and allow the natural ambiguity of Faure's music to speak for itself, while concerning his playing more on making the pieces more propulsive. This makes a few of the nocturnes, such as the 7th and the 9th lag to my ear. A faster pace with less syncopation on the rythms (i.e. less noticeable rubato) would allow his music to be more affective to me, and less narcoleptic. I'm just being picky though, it is a very good purchase, for the price, sound quality, and beautiful music. Faure is in that tricky spot between musical movements, though the more I listen to him, the more I pinpoint him as being an impressionist. The hardest kind of piano music to pull off, so in that view, Martin's approach could the most valid, though I feel most the harmonies in the nocturnes would sound more effective "glistening" rather than "glowing."
Masterpieces, masterfully played.......2000-07-22
This is the first recording of Faure's piano music I ever bought. These are later works of the composer and can be somewhat more elusive than his early compositions, but Jean Martin's playing is at once precise and expressive. I now have all of the Naxos recordings of Faure's piano music and I vastly prefer the two CDs of Nocturnes played by Martin to the CD's with Volondat playing. I highly recommend these recordings to anyone.

Impeccable clarity of line.......2007-03-13
With the excellent review material already written, I'd only like to add a few comments.
I've been enjoying Faure's music since music school 30 years ago, and, by now, I've probably heard the work of most pianists that have taken a serious stab at his wonderful 4+ hours of solo piano music. Like most of us, I'd never heard of Thyssens-Valentin. I can't say we should jettison the work of Stott or Roge or Collard now that these discs are out, but Thyssens-Valentin has a particular approach that I think is worth emphasizing: She does a wonderful job of leading our ears with the main thread of the musical ideas such that the progression from beginning to end of each of these Nocturnes seems quite straightforward; almost simple. Stott, much as I like her in many respects, tends, like many pianists, to get caught up in the detail, and to "worry" over the filigree...all the activity that moves around the main line. That's lovely stuff too, but Thyssens-Valentin is almost hypnotic in the way she grabs your ear and takes you through the steps of each Nocturne.
I admit, though, that toward the end of the disc, she occasionally sounds just a bit labored, like the struggle (hers or Faure's?) is almost too much. But this is a small thing in an otherwise very significant achievement. I agree, too, that the sound is decent, but no better. It's certainly good enough to allow the message to get across.
If you like Faure's piano music, this is a must. If you've never heard it, but are interested, I think this is a very good place to start.
Finally!.......2003-12-16
Finally, with each of Testament's three discs, perfect performances of what seemed to be such elusive music. Now, someone, could we have Thyssens-Valentin's Mozart?
Revelatory performances by a re-discovered pianist.......2002-08-13
Gabriel Faure's 13 Nocturnes, composed over a period of 46 years from 1875 to 1921, form a remarkable series in the composer's output. Starting from the rather conventional first Nocturne, the music traverses through episodes of light and darkness, agitation and serenity until it reaches those dark and desolate final pieces. From it, one can see how Faure's compositional idiom matured over the 4 decades and how the music itself increases in profundity and harmonic complexity as the series progresses. It represents such a fascinating musical and spiritual journey so that performing or listening to them in chronological order can be a most mesmerizing, revelatory and hugely rewarding experience.
These beautiful and evocative works have found in Germaine Thyssens-Valentin their perfect advocate. The Dutch pianist, who died 1987 at the age of 85, is a rather obscure name to most. The reason for such neglect by pianophiles may stem from the fact that she took a lengthy sabbatical mid-career to raise her 5 children and that the label which she mostly recorded with, namely Ducretet-Thomson, did not survive very long into the stereo era. It is therefore laudable for Testament to re-issue some of her Faure recordings, of which this is one.
What makes Thyssens-Valentin the Faure interpreter par excellence, then? Well, her outstanding pianistic and interpretative qualities will immediately become evident when one puts on this wonderful recording. The catalogue of her attributes makes a long list - She is blessed with a superb technique, and her playing is characterised by impeccable musicianship, a warm and beautiful tone, a most sensitive touch, a wide palette of tone colours and dynamic range, the most subtle of keyboard inflections, a complete command of the art of voicing the melodic line as well as those exquisite figurations in Faure's piano writing, a sort of lyrical eloquence that will charm the listener to submission, a deep understanding of the music's possibilities as well as a total identification with the spirit of the music. It is difficult to imagine any other to equal, let alone surpass, these exceedingly fine performances.
Testament has done some good re-mastering for the re-issue. However, I found the piano tone to be occasionally rather "misty", especially for notes in the middle range, which probably is a feature of the original 1956 mono recordings. The presentation of the CD is good, with 2 well-written articles by Jeannine Lancien, daughter of Thyssens-Valentin, and Bryce Morrison. As this CD may help many listeners to discover or re-evaluate both a neglected master pianist as well as Faure's music, and that it can also give great pleasure to both the ear and the mind, it can be recommended with the greatest enthusiasm.

Customer Reviews:
Vibrant refinement and sheer lyricism! .......2006-08-01
Jean Philippe Collard is among of the pianists of his generation, the most pyramidal, consistent and mature of them.
Gabriel Fauré is one of the most beloved composers outside of France and weirdly, one of the most misunderstood musicians of his generation. As a classicist, he always maintained the ideals of Rameau. Little of even nothing cared about expressive modes, technical devices, regarding himself the logical product of a long established tradition in a decisive musical history turning point.. His musical formation accuses a solid doses of Bach where form and content, clarity and unit, supported his untamed Romantic spirit. His harmony was constantly enriched due the powerful inspiration, there are swiftly moving modulations and peerless chromaticisms, that suggest us an overflowing source of untiring inspiration. That's why, in honor to the true, these pages of fecund, sheer and pristine beauty have not achieved the deserved lace it should occupy in the literature for piano.
These thirteen Nocturnes constitute by far, his finest single group of fine pieces. The kaleidoscopic lyricism, captivating serenity and that mysterious spell make of these pages one of my favorite pieces any time. You just only should notice the exuberance of the Fifth Nocturne Op. 66 to agree in my personal appreciation.
This set of Fauré' s Nocturnes simply has no equal, in hands of this poet of the piano; Jean Philippe Collard who carves in relief his eloquent expressiveness and lavish phrasing.
