Raymonda is a full-length ballet clearly inspired by Tchaikovsky's three great works for the dance, and it's not far inferior to them. Glazunov was an immense musical talent, and an excellent composer of dance music. His works do run the risk of being labeled "routine," to the extent that he had such an easy gift at writing for orchestra that his music can lack the ultimate melodic distinction. In other words, he sometimes sounds too comfortable. But when suitably inspired, as here, and given a subject that really got his juices flowing, he could rise to the occasion. This is the only complete recording of a ballet score than has many superb moments, and at budget price it's a great value for the money. --David Hurwitz

I have come to know Alexander Glazunov's work too late in life: I fear I don't have enough time remaining to savor it. Now, like a potent German "Eiswein," I must take it in small, delectable amounts. I read that the composer was a 'natural' when it came to penning beauty. I heard he also was a carouser who could play the piano a virtuosi with a cigar in one hand. Having been born into late Imperial Russia privilege, he managed to hang on to it within the roiling, puritan early USSR and succeeded in removing himself to France toward life's end. This cat had and used all of his nine lives!
"Raymonda" certainly supports Glazunov's easy brilliance at the piano and on barred paper: I am neither an opera or a ballet fan, but am captivated by Annisov's NAXOS recording of the title. The work is delicate, smooth, melodious, balanced, and masterful - but it has a hidden aspect: it is comfortable and enticing. One hears the world in such music. When I listen to "Raymonda" I hear Tchaikovsky, a little Glinka, perhaps? and R-Korsakov. Listen closer and we hear Liszt and, maybe a skosch of Wagner. Is there an Austrian there, too? Glazunov links Russian classical sound to that of Western Europe, for which he was for a time revered - and now pays a price for same by not being well known outside Russia's frontiers. All the same, his countrypeople know him and claim him as their own justifiably. LISTEN to Glazunov and find yourself at a grand banquet of beautiful music. Only he, however, could bring the cigar....

This is a beautiful version of Raymonda. Each selection of music is broken down into small tracts and works well for teaching variations. Though it seems complete, the music for the Bolshoi version of the variation I chose was not included on these discs.

Unlike Tchaikovsky's three ballets, Alexander Glazunov's slightly posterior "Raymonda" isn't very well served on CD. The few full length recordings prove nonetheless that the score can easily stand on its own. "Raymonda" remains one of the youthful composers best efforts in the genre, and indeed in his whole orchestral output, deserving a wider exposure than the limited circle of balletomanes.
Evgeny Svetlanov's formidable version with the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra remains a clear first choice. Yet, the present Naxos release has the advantage of an excellent digital recording. Alexander Anissimov moreover knows Glazunov's music inside out, has conducted the ballet in the theatre, and obtains excellent results from the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. At this price, one doesn't need to hesitate. Recommended.

I am a dancer, and this is a very nice ballet to dance! It helps so much when the music is of good quality! I love this cd and I would like to say that if you are a dancer I think you should buy this wonderful cd!

Alexander Glazunov composed Raymonda, his first of three ballets by 1897 after the story of Lydia Pashkova, a notable columnist & novelist. Like Lady Soubrette & The Seasons, Raymonda was commissioned by Marius Petipa (who commission Tchaikovsky to compose Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, & The Nutcracker). It was a hugh success at its 1898 premiere at the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. The performances of this work continues with some regularity (the Boishoi Theater is scheduled to perform it this late Spring)& Act III (Raymonda Variations) had its occassional presentation on the theatrical stage.

Glazunov happened to be the logical choice for the commissions of the ballets. Like Tchaikovsky, Glazunov had memorable themes & melodies. His ballets tend to be coherent, with a good sense of heroics, sentiments, & drama. Typical of Glazunov is a sense of universality in this ballet (with themes of Hungary, French, Indian & Spanish embedded in one, with an impeccable russian orchestration & sound).

The performance of Alexander Anissimov with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra was warm, gracious, grand, with some extra time in performing the first act. A sense of commitment is noticable from start to finish.

Recommendable, although Evgeny Svetlanov's 1962 recording with the Boishoi Theater offered more excitement, fullness (the ballet employs over 100 instruments), & commitment. This recording has been reissued by Melodiya/BMG, although not available in the United States.

Well, think about it.

This CD, like all NAXOS is a wonderful sampler of the wonderful work of Alexander Glazunov, who is not very popular these days unless you tend to listen to your local classical music station. I have to admit I wish NAXOS had chosen more pieces of Glazunov from his Ballet Scenes, as it seemed they excluded some of the best "scenes," from the CD. Maybe my expectations were higher, but I'd say that is the only flaw on this nearly flawless CD.

        This is probably my favorite boxed set of anything, ever. Each disc has its own merits but the Brahms and Franck are passionate and sublime, the Bartok is everything you want your Bartok to be, and of course the Tchaikovsky is without comparison. Long live King David!

        A mandatory purchase (at a bargain price!) for all violin lovers- it contains some of Oistrakh's greatest recorded performances, including mind-boggling performances of the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Brahms and and Dvorak concerti as well as the famous sonata recordings with Richter. Please, BMG, could we have more such treasures from Melodiya's legendary vaults?

        Perhaps the great accomplishment in playing an instrument is to play it naturally, as if it were like breathing. Few artists prove this point as well as Oistrakh, the Soviet Union's artist, a true symbol of the Russian's school of music's excellence. As some other reviewer said, this is a moment of true musical orgasm. As an aspiring violinist, hearing Oistrakh's effortless rendition of the Tchaikovsky brings one almost to tears before such greatness. Some may complain about his dated method, but I favor it above any other artist, and highly recommend his interpretation of both the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky. Considering the fact that people didn't walk out of his performance of the pieces while a bombing raid was going on (during WWII), the man's musical prowess is second to none. Of special attention is the Brahms Sonata in A Major with Richter, easily one of the purest performances of the piece.

        Reviewer David Mednicoff is exactly right about this set. All the concerto performances are terrific, but the two discs of sonatas (Brahms #2 & 3; Frank; Shostakovich [the live world premiere] and Bartok) with Richter are really something else. Amazing.

        Raymonda is an 1897 commission from the Imperial Theatre at St. Petersburg--commissioned by the same guy who commissioned Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker from Tchaikovsky. It's a medieval romance set in Provence, France, at the time of the Crusades; the beautiful maiden, Raymonda, is taken captive by a Saracen chief and is subsequently rescued by her crusading fiancé. This is all typical Russian-ballet stuff of the era, and it's not as thematically rich as Scheherazade. It is, however, filled with memorable moments and delightful orchestral flourishes. This is one of Glazunov's greater successes. --Paul Cook

        Although Glazunov did not exhibit the genius of his mentor, Rimsky-Korsakov, he was a talented composer in his own right with a gift for pleasing melodies as well as striking orchestrations. Glazunov's three ballet scores are among his finest works. Of these "The Seasons" is probably the best -- a melodic gem throughout its relatively-short length. The longer "Raymonda," while not as consistently inspired as "The Seasons," contains much beautiful music that no lover of ballet -- or of Russian Romanticism -- should miss. This CD contains virtually all of the best music from "Raymonda" while ommitting the less-inspired parts. I highly recommend it.
