Leading Man
Editorial Reviews

The luscious baritone Thomas Hampson says, "I grew up with this tradition (musical comedy), with the idea of singing straight from the heart." And sing from the heart he does, while utilizing his extensive vocal training to enliven all nuance, realize each intimate moment, and expand into every climax. His big, broad, totally controlled baritone visits falsetto land more in this recording that in his entire operatic career--but it works! In a nostalgic moment, he sings "Hey, There" with John Raitt, who still possesses a hint of his former dominance in this repertoire. Most effective is his rendition of "Unusual Way," which he winningly makes his own. A stunner. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Leading Man.......2006-12-10
Excellent album. Excellent singing. Beautiful diction, tone, expressiveness. Yes, he is an opera singer. Yes, you will hear the influence of his opera training. But it isn't pretentious, as other reviewers have stated. In many songs you get the feeling he is singing as a 6'3", 250lb dockworker, not someone in tails (or a man who spends a lot of time decorating). His manly voice sounds like someone who would actually be attracted to the lovely ingenues (and not acting like it, if you know what I mean, not that there's anything wrong with that...) Unfortunately, in some songs you also get the feeling he is singing to a soprano that is about 15 feet tall while in the Roman colliseum.
"Awesome.....if only there were more songs.".......2006-07-24
Thomas Hampson totally rocks these songs with his rich baritone voice soaring through such notes as high G, Aflat and A! His Music of the Night, in my opinion, is even better than Michael Crawford's. I recommend this to Musical Theatre actors who want to learn how to sing really well. For anyone else it really just depends on whether or not they are willing to pay 17 dollars for 11 songs (all amazing).
The last and most spectacular of Hampson's crossover recordings.......2006-07-17
I haven't heard Thomas Hampson in any solo crossover work since this CD came out in 1996. that's baffling, because this is certainly a spectacular experience in world-class singing applied to musical comedy. Hampson's variety of tone, including a stretch of falsetto in "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables and 'Music of the Night' from Phantom, is nothing less than stunning (I played this CD for a famous soprano who was visiting Santa Fe, and she was torn between jealousy and awed admiration). A good deal of the music lies in the tenor range at the very frontier of Hampson's voice, but even there he does wonders.
For some reason Hampson's crossover work gets pans at Amazon, and it's true that you have to love Broadway to enter into this album. Hampson clearly loves everything from Disney ('If I Can't Love Her' from Beauty and the Beast) to cult musicals like Nine and The Secret Garden. Nothing is less than superbly done, leaving me to wonder why there has never been a follow-up.
Very disapponted.......2006-05-15
Fine operatice styling does not present well on the Broadway stage. Some crossover singers are fantastic (ie Kiri te Kanawa) but this does not make it. The singing is much to forced to be enjoyable.
Not Good.......2006-01-17
Leave it to Thomas Hampson and his giant ego to title an album, Leading Man. We all look forward to that day when Hampson wakes up from his reverie and realizes that he cannot sing everything. Here is the album that states the case emphatically that Opera singers have no business singing American Musical Theater. Particularly Opera singers who THINK they CAN sing this repertoire. Hampson's indulgent, charicatured, pompous and bloated renderings of this strong material is an embarassment. His performance of "Not A Day Goes By" is painful, and for all the wrongs reasons. He uses his celebrated falsetto to mamby-pamby effect in "Bring Him Home", a song written for the tenor voice. Maestro Raitt must have cringed while recording "Hey There". Too bad Hampson couldn't learn from one of the true Giants of American Musical Theater. If you want a good laugh, or cry, purchase this album. Don't say you weren't warned.

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Atmospheric Ballets.......2005-06-03
The two ballets on this disc represent Jean Francaix at his most humorous. This is the third disc in the series of Jean Francaix's orchestral music and once again demonstrates his ability to express musical ideas with wit and precision.
The ballet Le roi nu (The Naked King) was based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Emperor's New Clothes and was premiered in 1936 at the Paris Opera Ballet with Serge Lifar doing the corrriagraphy and dancing the role of the king. The ballet has been considered as Lifar's greatest achievement. The music is well-suited to the subject, colorful and expressive. The music tells the story perfectly, down to the laughter when the king, believing himself to be dressed to perfection, is found to be naked by the members of the court.
The other ballet on this disc, Les demoiselles de la nuit (The Ladies of the Night), is termed a ballet for cats in two scenes and was premiered in 1948. The action concerns several cats that mimic human behavior. The chief male cat named Baron de Grotius intends to wed a beautiful white kitten named Agathe; but she is in love with a human violinist. The marriage to the Baron takes place, provided with a nicely written procession and ceremony music. However, through her love of the violinist, Agathe becomes human herself but keeps falling back into her feline ways - most notably when she kills a bird. Agathe also has problems preventing herself from joining the nocturnal cavorting of her cat companions; the cats are chased by the violinist who falls to his death. The ballet ends with Agathe curling up next to the body of the violinist to show her devotion. Agathe was danced at the premiere by a young Margot Fonteyn. The ballet is evocative of moon-lit nights - a nocturne opens (and also closes) the first scene. The dances are playful and romantic with a touch of feline stylization to the melodies that nicely describe the cat's world in music.
Jean Francaix was truly in his element when writing his ballets. The dances are colorful and beautifully orchestrated. This is a pleasant disc that anyone interested in French music will want to have.

Customer Reviews:
Johann, Josef & Eduard Strauss: Valses & Polkas.......2002-04-25
One thing that Amazon failed to note in their catalog, and does not provide direct means for correction, is that this boxed set is an import from Europe, and has notes in FRENCH only. For this particular music, having foreign language notes is not a serious barrier to enjoyment.
Willi Boskovsky and the Johann Strauss Orchestra of Vienna have produced a polished performance of most of the familiar (and a few not so familiar) Strauss family Waltzes and Polkas.
I recommend this set/
