Malcolm Arnold: Dances
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
These modern examples of the "classical music ethnic dance craze" are simply adorable. Their inspiration comes from those two great Romantic compositions, Brahms's Hungarian Dances and Dvorák's Slavonic Dances; and like those two vivacious and popular works, these jolly little pieces helped put their composer on the musical map. Arnold began his career as a trumpeter, composed music for several films (including The Bridge on the River Kwai), and has since gone on to create an imposing orchestral legacy. But for many people, he's still the guy who wrote the English Dances, and they make the perfect introduction to his expertly crafted and brilliantly orchestrated musical universe. --David Hurwitz
Amazon.com
The late Bryden Thomson turns in a wonderful--and in places nearly heartbreaking--performance of four sets of dances composed by Arnold, one of the most prolific contemporary British composers. The best of these pieces are the English Dances and the Four Scottish Dances, which capture all the color of their specific regions without losing any of Arnold's distinct personality--and doggedly romantic touch. The rich Chandos sound has never seemed better or more appropriate. --Paul Cook read more

Customer Reviews:
More than the sum of the parts........2001-02-04
I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise!
Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen.
Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces.
Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention.
Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie.
Overall, although this could be taken as a glorified sampler... it is much more - there are complete works played intelligently and lighter, throw away pieces you'll want to chase after and listen to again.
A Great First CD.......2000-06-22
After falling in love with the recorder, I started searching for CDs and this was the first I bought. It quickly became a favorite CD. I like the fact that it ranges over a wide period--Baroque to Modern, and showcases the instrument in different settings. The liner notes are quite comprehensive as well. In a word--enchanting.
The sublime collection.......2000-06-18
I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster.
Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA can frantically promote "The Three Tenors" while mostly ignoring the genius of this amazing young woman.
This is not your kid's recorder. Ms Petri's complete technical and musical mastery of her instrument transforms the recorder into the equal of other familiar solo instruments, but with its own peculiar sound, penetrating but sweet, that sets it apart.
This album is made up mostly of tracks from her many earlier recordings. Some are transcriptions of well-loved piano miniatures (the Grieg numbers are perhaps more charming here than on the piano, if that is possible); of baroque works for flute, recorder, or strings; of modern recorder music written for Ms Petri by contemporary masters. Some are accompanied by small orchestra and others by Ms Petri's husband, the excellent guitarist and lutist Lars Hannibal. The combination of recorder and guitar is an intimate match made in heaven, and I recommend also this duo's complete album, 'Air'.
Ultimate Collection is Gross Understatement.......2000-03-28
This is by far the best "sampler" I have ever heard. The playing is so superb and the recorder so perfect a vehicle that I found myself listing to too often played pieces like Satie's Gymopedie No.1 as if for the first time. Same for the Grieg. It is very hard to believe these renderings aren't the original intention of the composers. This is a guaranteed winner.

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the price........2005-10-24
The price of this item suggests something cheaply done. But Malcolm Arnold is a musical genius and his dances are well-performed.
Ear candy.......2004-05-03
This is energetic, colorful, joyful orchestral music. Like the Hungarian Dances of Brahms or the Slavonic Dances of Dvorak, these can be enjoyed one at a time as a brief musical "snack" or all at once.
Full of energy!.......2004-02-06
If you are looking for something with a contemporary sound
with lots of energy then buy this CD. I was listening to
six dance settings by Holst and I fell asleep, then this CD
comes on and Wow! What a wakeup call. The quality of the performance is excellent and the interpretation by Mr. Penny
pleases me. Some of his tempos don't quite conform to the score but the effect achieved is believable. I give four stars because the overall recording level seems a bit low.
Blazing English Dances.......2003-07-04
Malcolm Arnold, famous for his film music (Bridge on the River Kwai), symphonies (many available on the Chandos label), and overtures, is here represented in a very entertaining series of Dances; composed between English Dances Set I in 1950 and the Welsh Dances in the past decade or so, spanning Opus' 27 to 138.
In many of Arnolds' symphonies, he uses many sounds evocative of Mahler and Sibelius, often brooding, creating expansive landscapes with little program associated with the music. With this series of dances, you will find nothing of that. The dances might most closely be associated with a Holst Suite or the Vaughan Williams Folk Song Suite, etc., but that would be doing these works an injustice. Each set is filled with musical pictures of each country they represent.
Each set of Dances follows the form of 1. Fast Movement 2. Scherzo-esque movement 3. Slow Movement featuring a lonely solo wind instrument on melody taken up by the sweeping strings later and 4. Fast Movement.
The outside movements are all gloriously vivacious. They often feature bubbling woodwind sections, tight fast moving brass acclamations, extremely high horn rips, rousing melodies and climaxes to get the blood boiling. These outer movements are truly exhilarating. The scherzo movements are very playful, usually featuring the interplay between woodwinds and strings. The slow movements are among some of the most beautiful written. Obviously taken from folk-song sources, these gorgeous melodies and orchestrations remind one of Grainger and Vaughan Williams.
This CD alone could be bought just for English dances I & II and the Scottish dances (which has the jaw-dropping sixteenth-note triple-toungings and ear-crunching horn-rips). Andrew Penny along with the Queensland Symphony blast through this music, creating a great English atmosphere along with edge-of-your-seat performances. All in all, this recording is great fun and great light British music. Do not hesitate to try this CD, one of the only complete sets of Arnold Dances (check out Chandos at full price) at a great price!

Brings back memories.......2007-06-19
I'm proud to say I played many of these Arnold versions while a music student at Northwestern by the guy who arranged them, John P. Paynter. In fact, he finished the Tam O'Shanter Overture during my tenure and as a member of band staff, I was one of the copyists for that whimsical piece. I played the Four Scottish Dances more times than I can recall and never got tired of them. Arnold's music is one of those rare examples of orchestral music that sounds better when played by a band. Frankly, I liked Paynter's interpretations of his Arnold transcriptions better than Junkin's, but his will do.
Great Music for Band Fans.......2003-01-08
This is some great music for Band fans. I have played Four Scottish Dances several times, and the Dallas Wind Symphony makes the hard stuff sound easy, especially the woodwind parts. My only complaint is the mikes were a little close to the clarinet section so you can hear the keys clicking. THis is very minor when you consider the overall excellent quality of this recording.
blah blah blah.......2000-07-26
This recording is an exceptional recording. The third movement is really slow, almost too slow. But noting to be disgusted about. It is played very well and very clear. If you are curious about Malcolm Arnold this is the cd for you.

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12
The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.
A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05
I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.
There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!
So So Compilation.......2002-01-14
My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.
Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23
I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.
The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.
Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!
Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02
Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

Album Description
If versatility is what is needed for success in the contemporary world of music, then Malcolm Arnold should fill all the requirements most commendably. As a matter of fact, he has made an enormous success of his versatility. Though his may not be a name too familiar to the average listener, the same person may, without knowing it, be humming or whistling one of Arnold's works.
Customer Reviews:
Superior in every way.......2003-02-17
The performances of the two works on this album are superior in every way to so many others. These works are emblematic of this most versatile composer. Yes, there are newer versions available, but the Arnold led performances are the way to go. Oh, and contrary to the reviewer who commented on the sonics: Are we listening to the same recording? All I can say is the the sonics are "solid as a rock". This recording is sure to excite on both musical and technical levels.
Malcolm Arnold's 3d Symphony.......2003-02-02
Most of Malcolm Arnold's music was written during the Cold War. The tension of that period, which many have now forgotten, is captured in his work. It is as if "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold" had been set to music in the 3d Symphony. This work first appeared on LP on the Everest label with Arnold conducting. Other versions of the work suffer from pace -- too fast. There is no better version available than the composer's own. Listeners unfamiliar with Arnold know him nevertheless: in the 1940s and 50s he frequently scored movies, among them "Breaking the Sound Barrier," "Bridge on the River Kwai," "Tunes of Glory," and "The Key." The superb brass work in his music reflects his own background: first trumpet for some of England's leading orchestras. His guitar concerto is an overlooked masterpiece. But anyone who wants to explore this remarkably versatile composer should begin with the 3d symphony conducted by the composer.
good music, bad recording.......2000-11-16
The Scottish Dances are some of my favorite pieces of music, and they are played well, but the poor recording job detracts severely from the music. Granted, it's not awful, but I tend to notice little things when listening to music. If you are thinking about buying this CD, I recommend you get a different recording of these songs.

Mark Lawrence.......2006-07-02
Lawrence's great strength as a trombonist is the simple loveliness of his sound, which comes through beautifully on some of the older, simpler melodies.
David Read.......2002-05-01
Mark Lawrence really has something special here. His interpretations are supremely rewarding, yet beautifully restrained. The Albinoni and Mediatation on the alto trombone are just gorgeous - in my mind well ahead of Alessi recordings of classic string pieces like The Swan. And the Marcello is a formidable interpretation, up there with the best string players, although he doesn't really get the baroque sound sometimes. In general the tone isn't quite as wide and gorgeous as Alessi, but he's picked the repertoire well so this isn't a problem. All in all, an awesome disc, up there with my top three best and complementary recordings out there for trombone (Joe Alessi's NY Legends and Lindberg's Virtuoso Trombone are the others).
Great Stuff.......2001-09-09
This is a terrific CD. Mark Lawrence demstrates complete mastery of the trombone. This CD covers just about every type of music for the trombone, from very melodic, to 20th Century, to Jazz. Buy this CD. You'll be glad you did.
Brilliant.......2000-06-19
This CD shows the capability of Mark Lawrence as compared to other popular trombonists, like Christian Lindberg and Joseph Alessi. Lawrence has the soloistic feel of Lindberg (which is my only complaint against Alessi), and can play convincingly in all the styles exhibited on this disc (which is one of Lindberg's problems). This is a must buy for all trombone enthusiasts!

--Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
Fun.......2002-02-09
Malcolm Arnold's many sets of Anglo-Saxon Dances are fun, light-hearted pieces that capture the folk music of the many cultures of the United Kingdom. This CD features the English, Scottish, Cornish, and Irish Dances (only missing the Welsh). My favorites are the more popular English and Scottish Dances, but the Irish and Cornish are still enjoyable to listen to. These pieces capture melodies that will sound very familiar and that you'll be surprised you've never heard before. After listening to these tunes, you'll catch yourself gaily whistling a Scottish reel.
