Mozart: Requiem / Auger, Ziegler, Hadley, Krause, Shaw

Editorial Reviews

Most chorus masters make very dull symphonic conductors--perhaps because they always stress clarity of diction when they ought to letting the music rise to a natural climax, whether or not you can hear the words! Robert Shaw was no exception, but for Telarc he did make a series of very fine discs devoted to masterpieces of the choral literature, and this is one of them. Perhaps because he trusted this chorus implicitly, he isn't afraid to get up there and really let the orchestra play too. The result is a memorable performance of this popular work. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Mozart and Shaw!.......2006-11-10

What a tremendous combination...Mozart and Shaw! Each were (and remain) tops in their field. This particular recording exhibits the drama of the Requiem. I highly recommend this recording...and any recording by Shaw. You can't go wrong with this one. It will please your ear and bless your heart!

5 out of 5 stars Yeah for Robert Shaw.......2006-04-10

I was very disheartened to see that this CD has an average rating of just 3.5 stars. It deserves much more than that. Listen to the diction and style! Wow! An A+. I don't quite understand how others can say that Shaw is boring as a conductor and has no interpretation skills. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, however, but I just wish people would realize how glorious the sound on this recording really is. It sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it.

Take a look at it and see what you think, but in my book, this is the finest. I have heard tons of other versions of this work, and still picked Shaw's version as the one to own.

This saying may help you in choosing which version to buy of Mozart's Requiem, or any major choral work for that matter: "When in doubt, buy Robert Shaw."

5 out of 5 stars The Mozart Requiem - Shaw Chorale.......2006-03-22

Having heard only one other recording to compare to, this recording with the Robert Shaw Chorale is most excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Shaw is the best.......2006-03-01

This performance of the Requiem is meticulous and rhythmically brilliant, which is one of Shaw's legacies. I have noticed, over the last thirty years, that conductors often miss the juxtaposition of rhythm in the Rex Tremendae. The strings have double dotted rhythm; the voices have single dotted rhythm. The way Shaw performs it, it's as close to what is written that I've heard. Not exact, but very very close. Stunning performance.

1 out of 5 stars Another typical Shaw recording.......2005-11-10

I know choral music buffs will hate my for my reviews of Robert Shaw, but he really has become my single least favorite conductor of all time. Everything he records is so bland! There is absolutely no energy in this recording. Sure there is plenty of beauty, but that is not what Mozart's Requiem is all about. Every one of Shaw's recordings puts me to sleep, and this one is no different. This is one of Mozart's most boldy expressive works, and Shaw makes it seem like any other piece of choral music. If you like beautifully sung, but bland performances, then by all means buy this recording, but if you want a recording with depth and power, one that is above all inspired, check out Bernstein's recording with the Concertgebauworkest Amsterdam. If it is too over the top, check out a Karajan recording.
