New Orleans, Vol. 2
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Like its predecessor, this 1981 recording is as true as possible to the spirit, and even the letter, of the music that found form in New Orleans in the first decades of this century, music that had changed rapidly in the move to Chicago in the 1920s. The band brings a relaxed flow to the music whether it's a religious tune or a raucous rag, a feeling encouraged by the extended times permitted by later recording. The style is classic polyphony, with Frank Demond's trombone and Willie Humphrey's clarinet developing elaborate patterns around Percy Humphrey's stately and burnished trumpet leads; the music is propelled along by the rhythm section, including Josiah Frazier on drums and James Miller on piano. Willie Humphrey's speechlike clarinet playing stands out, especially on his solo on "Shake It and Break It." --Stuart Broomer

The second of back-to-back solo albums cut in the early '80s, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack: The Legendary Sessions Volume Two (originally released as The Brightest Smile in Town) presents a more balanced mix of vocal and instrumental tracks than its predecessor, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. While it's fun to hear the great New Orleans pianist romp through "Box Car Boogie" and patiently work his way through the twilight blues of "Pretty Libby," the unexpected treats are the best: a heartsick version of Jimmy Rodgers's "Waiting for a Train;" a Doc Pomus cover, "Average Kind of Guy," that sounds like Randy Newman on a particularly good day; and "Marie La Veau," a highly syncopated bow to one of the Crescent City's many voodoo queens. By the time Rebennack ends Brightest Smile with two gorgeous instrumentals--a lovely take on Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Suite Home New Orleans"--you're reminded just how encyclopedic his knowledge of American music is. (The 2006 reissue adds six previously unreleased bonus tracks.) --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
Boring bar music.......2007-04-12
I bought the CD because I was looking for piano music and this one was highly recommended by reviewers. Well, it sure is one boring piece of work! I somehow missed reference on the music style. So, to you all who may be doing the same mistake: it is a blues music for bars. Go out Friday night and you'll have a great chance to hear the same music: the never-ending stream of notes to make you feel unworried and thirsty. Nothing great nor "legendary" about it really. It has something specifically American about it that I find difficult to relate to: too common, too simple, too simpleminded, too shortcoming. Sorry, but using piano for instrument doesn't make the music great; the melodies could have been played on harmonica or accordion instead and sold as folk-music.
Rythm and Blues Master.......2006-11-26
Somewhere in the mid-eighties Dr John released plays Mac Rebennack. Where a lot of the good doctor's studio work was at times plagued by mediocrity that release was suddenly a more than solid effort. Mac Rebennack is of course the Night Tripper himself, doctor John was suddenly playing out of his "own" songbook, although a lot of the compositions here are actually originated from some one else's pen. Plays Mac Rebennack gives you the good Doctor at his most pure, just the man and his rolling and funky piano, his rough and gruff voice and a great assortment of songs and instrumentals. The original release focussed on instrumental work, the vol. 2 companion of the re-release with outtakes from the original sessions focuses more on vocal outings of Dr. John from that time.
Plays Mac Rebennack was a highly intimate late night album; the outtake sessions featured here in vol. 2 are much in the same vein. This is not a bad thing at all, listening to this album one can only conclude that the Doctor is much more powerful and compelling when playing all by his lonesome. The album features a lot of different shades, from uninhibited joy to dark melancholy. With tracks like Marie La Veau some of the Night Trippers mystic creep into this album, Boxcar Boogie is a bar room brawl, Touro Infirmary is a strong adaptation of the familiar st. James, Come Rain or Shine is spine chilling.
Every single selection here is played in the Doctor's signature style, highly indebted to Professor Longhair yet very recognisable as Mac Rebennack. Doctor John has long been one of the most eccentric individuals in Rhythm and Blues; Plays Mac Rebennack shows us he's a master. There's not a note to many, during the record he plays his strengths en weaknesses very well. This release and the re-release of the original album were long overdue.
Enjoyable Dr. John.......2006-08-18
This CD features really good blues piano. Sometimes soft and quiet and at other times quite strident. For me,this is really the way the piano should be in this genre. Dr John's vocals (not on all tracks) adds to the authenticity.
Fantastic album.......2006-03-23
A great way to revisit classic Dr. John. Remastered for amazing sound with a TON of bonus tracks...this is a fantastic album for any Dr. John fan or someone looking to get into his stuff. Definitely pick it up!

Amazon.com essential recording
The second volume in Rhino's series of Cajun and zydeco music compilations, this collection includes 18 cuts by Terrance Simien & The Mallet Playboys, Nathan Abshire, The Balfa Brothers, Queen Ida, Clifton Chenier, Boozoo Chavis, Beausoleil, and 10 others. Stylistically, this disc covers everything from the Balfa Brothers worthy stab at the Cajun national anthem, "Jolie blond" and D.L. Menard's traditional "The Back Door" to Clifton Chenier's cover of Louis Jordan's joyous "Choo Choo Ch-Boogie" and Rockin' Dopsie's spirited reading of Professor Longhair's "Mardi Gras in New Orleans." More fun than definitive, this is another intelligently selected installment in a very worthy series. --Robert Baird

Another Gem from the Vaults at Rhino.......2003-05-21
I get the feeling that my dream job would be to work at Rhino Records. ALLIGATOR STOMP VOL. II is yet another of the great compilations and anthologies put together by the Rhino folks. They have assembled a great cross-section of Cajun classics. I can't say that it is definitive, but it's sure a great time. Play this at your next BBQ or party and I can guarantee smiles on everyone's faces and questions about the artists that are recorded here.
Go Go Zydeco.......2001-03-06
I was turned onto this series of recordings after finding one in a grab-bag of CDs purchased off of eBay. After being exposed to Rockin' Sidney's 'My Toot-Toot' in my earlier days, I was anxious to hear more upbeat Zydeco music. This album hit the spot. Recording quality leaves a bit to be desired, with some lo-fidelity moments here and there. Overall listenability, however, is good. Put this on whilst driving to work and you'll be in a better mood upon arrival!
The Best of the Alligators.......2001-02-26
Another fine compilation by Rhino, mixing in the obvious classics with some hard to find gems. The rare recording of the Balfa's "Jolie Blonde" alone is worth the price.

Loosely translated as "The Hot Men," this New Orleans-based trio of percussionist Bill Summers, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and drummer Jason Marsalis go way beyond their homeboy Jelly Morton's command to add tinges of Latin to jazz. Augmented by bass, guitar, piano vocal, and drums, they create a swinging and dancing musical dish prepared with equal ingredients from all over the African diaspora: from the parade pulsations of "Comparsa N.O." to Argentine amour of "Tangeaux-zon." Marsalis, the boy wonder of his famous family, assimilates an astonishing array of moods and grooves, whether he's swinging a Latin mix on Roberta Flack's hit "Feel Like Makin' Love," laying down a roots riddim on the Black Uhuru-sounding "Rasta Renegade," or Afro-Americanizing the Cuban beat on "Fongo Sunk." A young Miles Davis with a tropical tone best describes Mayfield's sound on the three-part, "Cuban Suite," which includes an impressionistic string quartet, a balmy bolero, and a moving montuno. Bill Summers, the star of this outfit, is perhaps the best American-born African drummer ever. His sacred rhythms on "Alabi Oyo E" and "Suite Obatala" echo his work on Quincy Jones's Roots soundtrack, and the booty-shaking remake of "Chameleon," which he made famous with Herbie Hancock and Parliament's "We Want the Funk," reminds everybody where the "one" is. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
An eclectic trip through many musical neighborhoods........2001-10-03
Having lived with, and listened to, Hombres Calientes, Volume 2, for several months, I have come to the conclusion that the disc is like a subway car ride through many musical neighborhoods. After each cut, it is as though the listener re-enters the darkness, each time emerging to a different beat, style or rhythm. While not all of the tracks work, enough should catch your attention in a first listening to prompt you to go back and re-visit and experience. Soon, you may find yourself enjoying every stop on the route.
The Most Smoking Live Band in the World today.......2001-03-12
I have seen Los Hombres Calientes at least 7 times including each of the past 3 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festivals. Their live show is one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. I know why they won the Billboard Music Award. Such imagination, technique, and musicianship from each of their members. Yvette is a beautiful woman whose presence on stage enhances the feeling of the crowd and teaches some of us who are not so great at dancing how to move gracefully to music. Irvin Mayfield is going to be near the top of the list of the best trumpeters ever...up there with Miles, Wynton, and Freddy. Bill Summers is the most gifted percussionist on the planet. I leave both of their first 2 CD's in my CD player all the time and can't wait for their 3rd.
A big disappointment.......2000-09-10
I went to see this group live in Houston last night and bought this CD before the concert started. Unfortunately, I should have waited till intermission and saved the $15 instead. Not knowing anything about Los Hombres Calientes I expected a true Latin Jazz group as advertised in their billing. Unfortunately this group does not have one ounce of Latin blood or spirit among them and it shows in this CD and their performance. One of the pieces they attempted last night was Mandinga, a great Cuban guaracha/son which they simply botched. Los Hombres Calientes must be trying to capitalize on the current popularity of Latin music, given their name and billing, however they should call themselves The Hot Men and play New Orleans jazz instead, a genre better suited for their style. If you want to listen to a real Mandinga, buy the Ruben Gonzales version on World Circuit.
Absolutely Outstanding!.......2000-06-24
This CD is definitely one of my absolute favorites. It is always one of the 5 cd's in my cd player and I have another copy for the car. This is truly inspired and ORIGINAL music. I'm lucky enough to live in New Orleans, so I can sometimes catch LHC live! Bill Summers (of HeadHunters fame) is a musical genius. LHC have a great international sound mixed with some true new orleans flavour! Irvin Mayfield has got to be the most talented young artist around. His style is really his own, and his compositions are original and moving. You don't have to think twice about this purchase. This CD is a MUST HAVE.
Simply amazing..........1999-11-13
Sometimes, when a group you love releases a new disc, there is a nervous anticipation in the days leading up to it. "Can they do it again? Will it be fresh?" etc... All these thoughts ran through my mind. Have no fear. Los Hombres Calientes do not become complacent on their second outing. From the string quartet on "Cuban Suite, Pt. 1" to the NOLA rap/brass band mixed in with latin vocals on "A Comer Y A Descargar", they have beguiled and amazed me yet again. Summers, Marsalis, Mayfield, et al drive home their intoxicating blend of latin rythms and Big Easy soul. I am not kidding; nothing else sounds like these guys. From the straight NOLA jazz sound at the beginning of "Blues De Enredo" to the funk smackdown of "Chameleon/We Want The Funk" that ends the disc, you will be amazed at how all of these sounds can coexist and become greater than the sum of their parts.
LHC is on the move, indeed! If you are one of the many Jazzoholics who believe they have heard it all and that there is nothing original out there anymore, slap this one in your changer, and change your outlook.

Customer Reviews:
These jazz cd's rock...er...swing...are cool!.......2007-05-10
I bought all five of these at once so I could get "jazz literate" without spending a lot of money. They are a very cost effective introduction to jazz, and you get a lot of classics so eventually you can impress people by telling them about your favorite jazz tunes and artists. Just make sure to change the subject before you have to go into any detail.
Great recording quality considering the source material (old hissy tapes sometimes) and an almost-free price make this an unbeatable bargain with a jazzy beat!
Dabble in Jazz.......1999-09-21
This set was bought for me. I used to eat lunch at small sub shop on Belmont Ave. in Chicago. It was named the Jazzy Cafe. You went not just to eat and listen to whatever Jazz the owner was playing that day but to listen to whatever the owner wanted to tell you. He knew enough about Jazz to be dangerous. His subs would have a different taste depending on the music he was playing that day. He recommended this set to me one day and I never got around to getting it, so he bought for me.
To this day I am very greatful for this set and for the many subs I ate there.'
Put this set in and hit random and you'll get a real taste of the Jazzy Cafe as I remember it.
*****x5 Black Bowl Christmas Trees Globular Clusters.......1999-06-23
Say you're trying to be kool. Your perhaps thinking of inviting some people over to your house. You maybe have designs about impressing them with your worldly tastes. You may even know a lady you want to slice, but you're unsure as to how to get her off her guard. Get this set and all your dreams will come true. The song selection is A+, but some of the old tapes have some hiss that carried over onto the digital format. It is noticable, but primo if you have a mono state on your amp- you do have an amp...WHAT! You ain't got an amp and you wanna impress somebody with your stereo? Nevermind your in the wrong genre`- you must've got to this by mistake. Over the Rainbow, written by H.Carmichael and performed here by "Fatha" Hines on the ivory and Stephen Grapelli on the violin is worth the price of this set. Not to mention Theopolis Monk. Peace

Phenomenal disc, but don't buy it.......2003-09-02
This is definitely funk at it's best. Maceo and the JB Horns are the funkiest horn section and singers, and they are working with The Meters, who are pioneers in funk music. Absolutely amazing. However, realize that the artists were not paid for this disc. Before you buy it here, check at the Funky Meters website, at the message board, where someone can get you a much better price on this one. Same with Volume 1. Rather than support a foreign company who doesn't pay the artist, get it from someone else who doesn't screw the musicians.
