This disc must be intended for insomniacs; it has that three-in-the-morning feel. The single movements featured are for the most part well performed. And some are decidedly off the beaten track, like Wojciech Kilar's Death and the Maiden (no relation to Schubert's) from the soundtrack to the movie, Paulina's Secret. And we also get English horn player Thomas Stacy doing the solo from the slow movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony with the New York Philharmonic. Also, there is violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Symphony in a beautiful, dewy performance of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. -- Gwendolyn Freed

You get two versions of AHDN, one released in the U.K. on the Parlophone label........ and in the U.S.A.... on the United Artists label. Most of the issues of AHDN in your local store... are a remastered version of the Parlophoneone, not the United Artist version.

We can squabble all day about the two versions, but this CDMAXIMUM version is "outta-site." Whichever version you have liked in the past, nothing beats these extremely gifted cd's. I always wanted the United version... to hear what I heard when I was just a kid.... "Ringo's Theme." It takes me back to the days of Cousin Brucie and the transistor radio on my pillow at night, when WABC, WMCA in New York City and every other station was playing these albums night and day. Now you can have it...no static...no crackle...no skips...

But wait...that's not all you get...did I mention if you act right now you'll get...7 bonus tracks? That's right....act now...once it's gone...bub-bye!! Don't say I didn't warn ya!

          Every time I find myself awake past midnight, I listen to this CD. It does indeed have that "three-in-the-morning feel". I'm not a classical music buff but every piece on Night Tracks is well-chosen and played beautifully. No matter I stressed out I may feel, this CD never fails to relax me and fill me with peace and tranquility --- I can't recommend it highly enough. The album cover is striking and moody.

          I love this recording for its thought-provoking selections. I wouldn't suggest reading while you listen, you'll get too distracted. Maybe a long soak in the bath and a nice glass of wine. It's great for thinking things over. If I have a criticism, it's the odd themes from Dvorak, Copland, Vaughn Williams and Verdi. Playing just a taste of a theme from something doesn't satisfy. But the Bach, Kilar, Espere and the rest are wonderful.

            The Ataris are my favorite band and when I heard their new cd was coming out, I was more than excited. I went on their website and I heard the first song-Not Capable Of Love, and was kind of skeptical about their new songs. I know that all the band members are all new to the band except for the lead singer and I was wondering how that would affect their music. But after I bought it, I listened to it for a few days and really liked it. Kris Roe's voice sounds a lot deeper and more "evolved" than before, but after the first few tracks, you can hear smidgens of his normal voice that you hear in all of their older cds. So in conclusion, their new cd is a lot different than their older stuff, but it hasn't disappointed me. =)

            AFTER THE BALL was one of Noel Coward's most ambitious projects, an operetta version of Oscar Wilde's "Lady Windermere's Fan", with 3 of his favourite artistes in leading roles: Graham Payn, Vanessa Lee and Mary Ellis.

            Graham Payn was Coward's real-life companion, who introduced Coward's "Matelot" to great success in London. Mary Ellis and Vanessa Lee were two of the greatest operatic singers of the time and to have Payn, Lee and Ellis here in AFTER THE BALL is a rare treat indeed. The show had a rocky road to the stage and closed after only 188 performances at the Globe Theatre.

            The score features some of Coward's most intricate and complex compositions. Vanessa Lee's "Aria" is breathtaking and other highlights include "Light is the Heart", "All My Life Ago", "Mr Hopper's Chanty" and "Bright Clear Morning", though the entire score as a whole is amazing.

            Sepia has filled out the disc with other Noel Coward delights including (yes) Graham Payn's rendition of "Matelot", Mary Martin performing "My Horse Has Cast a Shoe" from PACIFIC 1860 and joining Payn for "Bright Was the Day". Vanessa Lee performs two numbers from GAY'S THE WORD - "Finder Please Return" and "On Such a Night as This".

            So wonderful that this score has finally been paid it's due.

              Flutist extraordinaire Eberhard Blum discovered the music of Morton Feldman and other members of the New York School when he became a Creative Associate at the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts in Buffalo, New York, during the 1960s. In these performances, Blum crosses the Atlantic from his native Berlin to the United States, performing works by Berlin-based Erhard Grosskopf and California-based Ralph Jones. The contrast in texture and feeling between the composers is a vivid demonstration of the cultural difference between European and American music in the 1960s.
