Imani Winds - Bravo!.......2007-01-04
Beautiful playing and arranging by the Imani Winds makes this recording accessible not only to other musicians, but the listening public as well. I have used this recording to teach a number of principles of general music, such as instrument recognition, and form. Especially impressive is the arrangement of "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
Not what I expected........2006-11-05
Had heard a cut on the radio and it was so lovely it prompted me to order the CD. However, the entire CD did not measure up to the beautiful first cut I originally heard. Too much dissonance, chaos, amidst a too few pleasing pieces. a disapointment.
Buy It !!.......2002-05-28
How do I begin? I bought the cd while Imani Winds was on tour here in Savannah, Georgia. They are truly a breath of fresh air for the classical community. I have worn a groove for sure in my cd. Most likely right where Umoja, the Piazzola and the Spirituals are. I have never heard such wonderfully ethnic and diverse music come from a woodwind quintet. The playing is of the highest quality but more importantly...DIFFERENT.
The quintet's performance of the standard literature..Villa Lobos/Francaix has an energy and edge that so many of the wind chamber groups today lack. I may speak a bit subjectively, (I have seen them in concert)...but often the live performance doesn't live up to the cd. Chuck that idea...BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT and if you get a chance...see them in concert.

Fresh innovative styles. A young group with healthy balance of classical, traditional and contemporary sounds. There is strong diversity within such a small group. Cheerful.

Terrific throwback to MJQ's early sound..........2003-12-26
I hope if Mr. Dorsey reads this, he accepts that when I compare the work of his group on this CD to the 1950's sound of the Modern Jazz Quartet, I am paying a high compliment. His bass-playing and song-writing, Bryan Carrott's vibraphone, the piano of Carlton Holmes, and the drumming by Vincent Ector are all superb. I had never heard of Dorsey or any of the other members when I purchased this because it looked interesting and the price was a bargain. I was a bit hesitant because Dorsey titled four of the nine tracks with religious terms, and I was worried I might be subjected to the kind of spiritual dissonance John Coltrane cultivated in parts of his famous "A Love Supreme." (While that album is beloved by many, it is the least favorite of my own dozen Coltrane discs.) However, on Dorsey's disc, "Baptism" and "Thessalonians" and "Song of Songs" and "Until the End of Time" are lovely, swinging bop tunes. No vocals, no chants, just great small-group jazz that is real jazz, not the bland stuff called "smooth" in recent years. Don't get me wrong...this unit is not cloning the MJQ, even though the same four instruments are present. Dorsey is the leader, so bass is more prominent than it was in MJQ; Mr. Carrott, good as he is on vibes, is not the immortal Milt Jackson, so Holmes' piano is more prominent. But if you are a fan of MJQ, you can't help but like this album too. It's 54 minutes of happiness, and I am delighted to have accidentally stumbled across it. Dorsey's compositions are consistently interesting, too. Jazz lovers, grab this if you can find it. Although it was recorded in 1999, it seems to be scarce, since it is not a major label product. It sure deserves wide exposure.
Swinging!!!.......2001-07-04
This is a great quartet record of bassist Leon Lee Dorsey. Features great vibraphone work from Bryan Carrott and Carlton Holmes is fantastic on piano. Vince Ector plays great drums also. Leon Lee Dorsey has played with Art Blakey, Lionel Hampton, Freddie Hubbard and many others.
Smokin Authentic Original Music.......2000-08-24
Leon's writing is exceptional. The versatility of the ensemble is great. The vibraphone work is very stimulating. A great CD for those who love music especially jazz.

Overlooked Free Jazz Recording.......2007-01-15
This album came with recommendations, high recommendations from a list of free jazz classics by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. I've heard several recordings by Frank Wright, an essential free jazz artist and the mid point between John Coltrane, and Charles Gayle and David S. Ware and this is my favorite out of all of them. That is because the line up provides (relatively) more structure. Frank Wright's playing is extremely free but stays closer to the realm of free jazz, rather than free improv. with the back up of Art Taylor who played mostly on classic hard bop recordings as well as Noah Howard whose style is closer to post bop. With them and pianist Bobby Few, Uhuru Na Umoja, an album(albeit extremely short)of creative free jazz work outs is grounded in certain melodic aspects which enhance it. This is probably the place to start with Frank Wright and now as well since this is a limited edition cd.

Rhythmic, wistful, universal Dutch treat.......2006-12-16
A beautifully produced rock/folk album with bilingual vocals, alternating between the band's fantastic lead singer Paskal Jakobsen and guest vocals by artists from Spain, Brazil, Japan, Ireland, India, etc., including a song recorded in New York with Adam Duritz and Counting Crow. I love Paskal's voice, his phrasing. He is so unique in his delivery, the perfect blend of classic and modern styles. The lyrics are wistful, powerful, evocative. Obviously few people in the world can understand all the words in this album, in a dozen languages, and there are only about 30 million Dutch speakers in the world. Everyone can enjoy their music though.

Miles Away... Wayne in Heavy -- by Scott Yanow, AMG.......2004-11-27
The repertoire of the mid-1960s Miles Davis Quintet is adapted and explored on this excellent CD by pianist Eric Gould, bassist Leon Lee Dorsey and drummer Greg Bandy. Despite the absence of trumpet and tenor, the 11 songs on the project work quite well in this format. The repertoire includes a few standards ("Nefertiti,' "E.S.P.," "Seven Steps To Heaven" and "Nardis") and some songs not often recorded since the `60s. Gould's piano style, though influenced a little by Herbie Hancock, is pretty original and his close interplay with his sidemen results in an appealing and fairly distinctive group sound. Each of these performances works quite well as Gould and his trio pay a little tribute to the past but also come up with consistently fresh statements. Recommended. - Scott Yanow
THANK YOU ERIC.......2000-03-11
On a Sat evening I walked into the Princeton record exchange in Jerzee looking for some new music, I ran across a name on a cd that I recognized it was Eric Gould I wondered if this was the same person I knew growing up with and after turning it over and seeing that it was the same person I was impressed. So I purchased it not knowing what to expect, after getting into my auto I played it and was even more impressed by Eric's style and his obvious mastery of the piano keys.
As a person who attempts to master things in life I was quite aware early into his The Real cd that Eric had mastered the piano.I played the cd over and over and was now a big fan of his music. Eric's style is very fresh and unique and very exhilirating.I purchased his newest cd the next day thats how much I appreciated his musical style and mastery of the piano.
After listening to Miles Away... Wayne in Heavy I was even more blown away. His interpretations of these two great artists music was a tribute to them that will be hard to be duplicated by any musician playing today.I constantly play these two cd's while I'm reading and each time hearing them it impresses me even more that Eric produced these two treasures.Well Eric I'm waiting on your latest gift to the world. And hopefully when you're touring in the area I'll catch your performance.
So Thank You Eric for being who you are and for sharing your music wih the world.I'm sure your future will even be brighter for I noticed you're a very conscious Afrikan centered Blackman with knowledge of self and a love of playing the ancestral notes in your mind.

Most soulful and hard dub.......2007-01-21
The rhythms are tight, the guitar and synths are spacy, the snare is right on time, and the tunes are soulfully soulful. Especially with Dennis Brown's echoing vocals floating in and out right on time.
Blood & Fire Sure Shot.......2005-10-10
The previous reviewer mostly said it all, but let me back him up; Do not hesitate to pick up this disc from the great Blood & Fire label (or pretty much anything else from them). This is 100% pure uncut dub, and 75 minutes of it too. Made up of two Dennis Brown albums, Prince Jammy dubs pure roots into pure dub magic, with skanking beats, spacious, textured soundscapes, grooving organ, deep bass, a touch of skanking guitar, and amazing echoing horn lines. "Sounds Almighty" is a slow wade into a dark lake on a summer night, with each ripple echoing into distant ghostly horn lines. "Great Man Called Kenyatta" is a baked trip down a sweltering Kingston sidewalk, amazing bongo sounds percolating in the humid air all around you. Well, yeah, that's kind of what this dub is like...it sends you on a trip. Check it out.
THE ROOTS AND THE PRESSURE.......2004-08-27
UMOJA/20th CENTURY DEBwise: Collecting two long-lost late 70s dubwise LPs from Dennis Brown and Prince Jammy, Blood & Fire's latest reissue offers just about everything you would expect from such a momentous meeting of minds: up-front drum and bass, spectral horn lines, and heavy showers of reverb. Dennis Brown's voice is almost completely excised, but with session superstars such as Sly and Robbie (drums and bass), Bingi Bunny, Chinna Smith (both guitar), Winston Wright (keyboards) and studio-dweller Sticky Thompson (percussion) working the rhythms, vocals aren't even a consideration. Heavy, heavy roots pressure throughout; this is a great addition to the Blood & Fire catalogue. The label also re-released Brown's JOSEPH'S COAT OF MANY COLOURS LP (as PROMISED LAND - with a nice haul of bonus tracks) in 2002.

"On the Real" by Frank Rubolino, Cadence Magazine.......2004-11-27
Bouncing jazz with a happy lilt is in the offing from Gould on "On the Real." He and his groups of varying sizes play seven of his compositions and two Jazz classics with and enthusiastic attitude that shines through on all selections. Gould leads from the piano chair, alternating bassists and drummers behind the soloing and theme statements of the front line of English on reeds and Burks on trumpet. Their sound is cheery and effervescent, and they develop the pieces into fine improvising vehicles. Although no recording date is given, I gather it is a rather recent date. Gould acknowledges that his compositions, however, were written in the late 1970's and 1980's, so he is no stranger to the music world although this is his first recording.
The closing "Dolphin Dance" is present as a piano trio and best shows the playing talent of Gould. His touch is light, yet his style is aggressive enough to give the tune a lot of punch. Elsewhere, he comes across very much as a team play, giving English and Burks frequent and ample soloing opportunities. Both men fit into the genial playing style dictated by Gould's writing. Witness their horns laughing on the album's opener as an indicator of this happy style of playing. Ransom and King share almost all the drumming chores. They both appear on "Stolen Legacy," a rhythm-based tune with an African influence that also features poetry dealing with that continent written and recited by Okantah.
Gould's presentation is solid and the music has much spunk to go along with its uplifting spirit. His efforts equate with a lighthearted but no light recording that has a lot of zip to it. - Frank Rubolino, Cadence
Great first CD from a rising star in jazz piano.......1999-10-11
Eric brings a newness to classical jazz. With his whimsical approach to The Joker, and the musical intrigue on Deborah's Journey, he demonstrates his grasp of the subleties of timing, expression, and movement.

"Who Sez?" by Scott Yanow, All Music Guide to Jazz.......2004-11-27
Pianist Eric Gould alternates three of his originals with jazz standards from John Coltrane, Cedar Walton, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, and Horace Silver on the modern straight-ahead jazz set Who Sez?. Gould plays quite well (with touches of early Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, and McCoy Tyner in his ideas), while Talib Kibwe on alto and soprano sometimes comes close to overshadowing the leader. Trumpeter Pharez Whitted has his spots too, but the focus is primarily on Gould and Kibwe. The modal music, much of it based in the 1960s, is well served by these talented musicians, and although the playing is not flawless (plenty of chances are taken), it is never dull. The musicians all show strong potential for the future. - Scott Yanow

Umoja Soundtrack Will Uplift You and Make You Dance!.......2005-03-22
Umoja: This Swahili word means "Unity" or "Togetherness". And this CD soundtrack will definitely unify people because the music is amazingly uplifting, transcends boundaries, and it will make you wish you could travel to South Africa to witness the musical as it comes to life on stage! This fantasic CD derives from the South Africa musical Umoja: The Spirit of Togetherness. A pulsating musical celebration of South African song and dance, from the rhythms of tribal music to the intricate dance moves of gumboot dancing.
The melodious voices blend together in PERFECT harmony and the title soundtrack "Umoja" will get you out of your seat and make you dance to no end. It also contains a total of 24 rich tracks and songs such as "Hobe" "Venda Snake Song" "Umoja" "Tula Baba" "I Have A Dream" "Laku Tshon' Ilanga" and "Paradise Road" which will leave you smiling, laughing and sometimes melancholy at the same time. (I bought it 2 weeks ago and haven't put it down since.)
The price is definitely worth the CD because this soundtrack has it all: dynamic talent with great voices for all to enjoy. You will not be disappointed, I guarantee it!
