Recorded in April 1990 by Skywalker Sound, Nicasio, California.

Anyone who wants to become more familiar with that typically baroque musical phenomenon, the Concerto grosso, ought to start with the most famous set of all, the twelve concerti by Arcangelo Corelli. These were published one year after the composer’s death in 1713, but had been performed by him in Rome for over twenty years with one of the most polished orchestras of the age. The modern historical performance practice movement has brought forth quite a large number of recordings of these works, but the 1989/1990 offering from San Francisco’s Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra is still able to hold its own; after many years at full price, it is now being almost given away as part of the “Classical Express” series, and lovers of baroque music are themselves to blame if they do not buy these two CDs. The second of the set was recorded a year later at a different venue, and after listening to both parts one after the other, I personally reached the conclusion that Nicholas McGegan and his team did rather better on Nos. 7 through 12: the playing seemed a little less hectic, rather smoother and even more polished, with the chamber organ of the continuo shining through rather more convincingly. Also, the recorded sound was rather more balanced, without the slightly “churchy” acoustics of the first volume. McGegan’s tempi are relatively fast in comparison with, say, Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande on BMG-DHM, but this tends to enhance the listening experience as a whole, although the Largo at the end of the Christmas concerto (No. 8) does lose something of its traditional sentimentality in this way. But altogether, this is a firm recommendation, particularly for baroque music-lovers who need to budget carefully.

The Christmas concerto is an interesting subgenre of the baroque concerto grosso. Several Italian baroque composers wrote concerti designated for performance at Christmastime - this designation being by virtue of their pastoral or "musette"
movements, such music being associated with the music of the sheperds of Bethlehem. Here Il Giardino Armonico performs a batch of Christmas concertos by Corelli, Vivaldi, Gemignani, and others. Giardino's astringent tone lacks the sweetness of Europa Galante (my preferred Italian period instrument ensemble), but their interpretations are bracing, sometimes startling in their dynamic contrasts, and full of life. They are, if you will, like a severe German alterpiece rather than a sweet Italian madonna.

I really don't understand why all these good CD's are disappearing! What is Teldec thinking!

However, I believe this CD is still available now somewhere on the Internet. I got my copy from SamGoody.com (or from TowerRecords' website? I don't really remember) Good luck finding it!

      For people who just can't bear to listen to another Christmas carol, this is the album. Completely instrumental, this is early music written with Christmas in mind, but it is in no way recognizable as Christmas music. These little heard pieces are brilliantly conducted and performed (as always) by Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert. I heard tracks 5 & 6 on the radio a few weeks before Christmas, when my spirits were suffering an uncharacteristic low, and found myself so completely moved by the beauty them, I had to have the CD. I didn't know what the other pieces would be like, but they all turned out to be perfection. Each selection is just the right amount of colour and flourish, moving from lovely largos to vivd vivaces without ever leaving the listener reaching to turn the volume down or off. I found the entire "1 hour plus" album thoroughly uplifting and easy to get lost in.       This set is an absolute gem, and for two reasons: First, because it is so rare and hard to come across; Second, because the quality of the music is at such a high level. This 5 CD SET ought to be part of every collection of fine music. Christopher Hogwood is one of the finest conductors of Baroque music that I've ever heard. The included rendition of Corelli's "Christmas Concerto" is the best recording I'v heard. As well, this set includes the complete "Four Seasons," which, while not exceptional, are quite satisfactory. This is a must own set for high quality recording collectors.

      If you love Vivaldi's FOUR SEASONS, you will eat this up. The new tempos (which may be more like the original) take this piece from its previous iterations as a formal, Baroquesque piece to a wild, rowdy interpretation of nature's four seasons--I mean, the actual four seasons. Spring has never sounded more like spring (the speeded up tempo reveals myriad birdsongs), etc. Each one of the pieces sounds less like drawing room classical music and more like the beautiful world outside. I have long been a fan of Vivaldi's four seasons, and this recording made me even more of one. I highly recommend it for Vivaldi lovers and anyone else who wants to hear this piece again--for the first time.

      It says something about "The 4 Seasons," and what a beaten-into-the-ground warhorse it has become, that it takes an interpretation this bizarre to garner any notice for this work these days. Certainly there are more than enough uninspired Vivaldi recordings to go around, and if a moratorium of 50 or so years were declared on any new recordings, I for one would be very happy.

      Having said that, I did find Red Priest's interpretation quite intruiging, and it certainly did not bore me. Some people have been appalled by what they consider to be a musical heresy, but personally I believe that a radical performance does less disservice to a composition than a mundane performance. However, I am not quite sure what the performers are hoping to achieve with this. When I hear the laughter of the audience, does this mean that the performers are trying for comic effect? What is the deal? Is this just nothing more than a baroque-era freak show, or are they more serious in their asperations? Certainly their musicianship is not in question, but there are times that they bend the music almost beyond recognition, apparently for no better reason than nobody else has thought before to do it.

      If this is Red Priest's only motivation, I suspect that the novelty will soon wear off and the various musicians will sink into obscurity.

      I never thought I'd want another "Four Seasons," but this is not only a wonderfully original take on the music but also a virtuoso display for the recorder soloist, Piers Adams. Paying close attention to the poems Vivaldi wrote to go with the music, the small ensemble has more fun with the music than you'd think possible. It may seem a little irreverant at times, but it's always true to the spirit of the piece -- and who needs another sound-alike recording? I can't recommend it highly enough, and the filler -- Corelli's "Christmas Concerto" -- is an enjoyable bonus.

I had not heard the Hassler Consort perform before, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the quality of performance was excellent (I have been burned before by buying recordings of great works only to find that the artists are not quite up to snuff). If you are looking for a good, solid Praetorius recording, this would be one to try.

        From the infamous "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" to one of my favorites, "In dulci jubilo," this is just outstanding! Their rendition of Luther's "Vom Himmel hoch" is well done too!

        Hassler Consort conducted by Raml does an excellent job, with grace and force where needed.

        Listen to this and you'll be find yourself constantly humming this wonderful score as well.
